We study the interplay of electron and photon spin in non-reciprocal materials. Traditionally, the primary mechanism to design non-reciprocal photonic devices has been magnetic fields in conjunction with magnetic oxides, such as iron garnets. In this work, we present an alternative paradigm that allows tunability and reconfigurability of the non-reciprocity through spintronic approaches. The proposed design uses the high-spin-orbit coupling of a narrow-band gap semiconductor (InSb) with ferromagnetic dopants. A combination of the intrinsic and a gate-applied electric field gives rise to a strong external Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) in a magnetically doped InSb film. The RSOC which is gate alterable is shown to adjust the magnetic permeability tensor via the electron g-factor of the medium. We use electronic band structure calculations (k$\cdot$p theory) to show the gate-adjustable RSOC manifest itself in the non-reciprocal coefficient of photon fields via shifts in the Kerr and Faraday rotations. In addition, we show that photon spin properties of dipolar emitters placed in the vicinity of a non-reciprocal electromagnetic environment is distinct from reciprocal counterparts. The Purcell factor (F$_{p}$) of a spin-polarized emitter (right-handed circular dipole) is significantly enhanced due to a larger g-factor while a left-handed dipole remains essentially unaffected. Our work can lead to electron spin controlled reconfigurable non-reciprocal photonic devices.
By utilizing Floquet driving protocols and interlacing them with a judicious reservoir emission engineering we achieve extreme non-reciprocal thermal radiation. We show that the latter is rooted in an interplay between a direct radiation process occurring due to temperature bias between two thermal baths and the modulation process which is responsible for pumped radiation heat. Our theoretical results are confirmed via time-domain simulations with RF circuits.
Non-reciprocal components are essential in photonic systems for protecting light sources and for signal routing functions. Acousto-optic methods to produce non-reciprocal devices offer a foundry-compatible alternative to magneto-optic solutions and are especially important for photonic integration. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a dynamically reconfigurable non-reciprocal acousto-optic modulator at telecom wavelength. The modulator can be arranged in a multitude of reciprocal and non-reciprocal configurations by means of an external RF input. The dynamic reconfigurability of the …
Emerging technologies based on tailorable interactions between photons and phonons promise new capabilities ranging from high-fidelity microwave signal processing to non-reciprocal optics and quantum state control. While such light-sound couplings have been studied in a variety of physical systems, many implementations rely on non-standard materials and fabrication schemes that are challenging to co-implement with standard integrated photonic circuitry. Notably, despite significant advances in integrated electro-optic modulators, related acousto-optic modulator concepts have remained relativel…
Realization of non-reciprocal devices, such as isolators and circulators, is of fundamental importance in microwave and photonic communication systems. This can be achieved by breaking time-reversal symmetry in the system or exploiting nonlinearity and topological effects. However, exploration of non-reciprocal devices remains scarce in acoustic systems. In this work, sound propagation in a space-time modulated medium is theoretically studied. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations are carried out to verify the results. Functionalities such as mode conversion, parametric amplificatio…
We report the engineering of air-voids embedded in GaAs-based photonic crystal surface emitting lasers realised by metalorganic vapour-phase epitaxy regrowth. Two distinct void geometries are obtained by modifying the photonic crystal grating profile within the reactor prior to regrowth. The mechanism of void formation is inferred from scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis, with the evolution of the growth front illustrated though the use of an AlAs/GaAs superlattice structure. Competition between rapid lateral growth of the (100) surface and slow diffusion across higher index pla…
Periodically driven systems, characterised by their inherent non-equilibrium dynamics, are ubiquitously found in both classical and quantum regimes. In the field of photonics, these Floquet systems have begun to provide insight into how time periodicity can extend the concept of spatially periodic photonic crystals and metamaterials to the time domain. However, despite the necessity arising from the presence of non-reciprocal coupling between states in a photonic Floquet medium, a unified non-Hermitian band structure description remains elusive. Here, we experimentally reveal the unique Bloch-…
We create and isolate single-photon emitters with a high brightness approaching $10^5$ counts per second in commercial silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers. The emission occurs in the infrared spectral range with a spectrally narrow zero phonon line in the telecom O-band and shows a high photostability even after days of continuous operation. The origin of the emitters is attributed to one of the carbon-related color centers in silicon, the so-called G center, allowing purification with the $^{12}$C and $^{28}$Si isotopes. Furthermore, we envision a concept of a highly-coherent scalable quantum p…
By engineering atomic geometries composed of nearly 1000 atomic segments embedded in micro-resonators we observe Bragg resonances induced by the atomic lattice at the telecommunication wavelength. The geometrical arrangement of erbium atoms into a lattice inside a silicon nitride microring resonator reduces the scattering loss at a wavelength commensurate with the lattice. We confirm dependency of light emission to the atomic positions and lattice spacing and also observe Fano interference between resonant modes in the system.
III-V solar cells dominate the high efficiency charts, but with significantly higher cost than other solar cells. Ultrathin III-V solar cells can exhibit lower production costs and immunity to short carrier diffusion lengths caused by radiation damage, dislocations, or native defects. Nevertheless, solving the incomplete optical absorption of sub-micron layers presents a challenge for light-trapping structures. Simple photonic crystals have high diffractive efficiencies, which are excellent for narrow-band applications. Random structures a broadband response instead but suffer from low diffrac…
Over the past decade, remarkable advances have been realized in chip-based nonlinear photonic devices for classical and quantum applications in the near- and mid-infrared regimes. However, few demonstrations have been realized in the visible and near-visible regimes, primarily due to the large normal material group-velocity dispersion (GVD) that makes it challenging to phase match third-order parametric processes. In this paper, we show that exploiting dispersion engineering of higher-order waveguide modes provides waveguide dispersion that allows for small or anomalous GVD in the visible and …
Silicon photonics has been studied as an integratable optical platform where numerous applicable devices and systems are created based on modern physics and state-of-the-art nanotechnologies. The implementation of quantum mechanics has been the driving force of the most intriguing design of photonic structures, since the optical systems are found of great capability and potential in realizing the analogues of quantum concepts and phenomena. Non-Hermitian physics, which breaks the conventional scope of quantum mechanics based on Hermitian Hamiltonian, has been widely explored in the platform of…
Artificial defects embedded in periodic structures are important foundation for creating localized states with vast range of applications in condensed matter physics, photonics and acoustics. In photonics, localized states are extensively used to confine and manipulate photons. Up to now, all the proposed localized states are reciprocal and restricted by time reversal symmetry. Consequently, localization is bidirectional and photons at the allowed passband in the otherwise forbidden stop band are confined irrespective of the direction of incident beam. In this report, by embedding a single def…
