We formulate the graviton propagator on de Sitter background in a 2-parameter family of simple gauges which break de Sitter invariance. Explicit results are derived for the first order perturbations in each parameter. These results should be useful in computations to check for gauge dependence of graviton loop corrections.
We consider the covariant graviton propagator in de Sitter spacetime in a gauge with two parameters, alpha and beta, in the Euclidean approach. We give an explicit form of the propagator with a particular choice of beta but with arbitrary value of alpha. We confirm that two-point functions of local gauge-invariant quantities do not increase as the separation of the two points becomes large.
We consider the proposal of gr-qc/0508124 for the extraction of the graviton propagator from the spinfoam formalism. We propose a new ansatz for the boundary state, using which we can write the propagator as an integral over SU(2). The perturbative expansion in the Planck length can be recast into the saddle point expansion of this integral. We compute the leading order and recover the behavior expected from low-energy physics. In particular, we prove that the degenerate spinfoam configurations are suppressed.
We study the analytic structure of the resummed graviton propagator, inspired by the possible existence of black hole precursors in its spectrum. We find an infinite number of poles with positive mass, but both positive and negative effective width, and studied their asymptotic behaviour in the infinite sheet Riemann surface. We find that the stability of these precursors depend crucially on the value of the normalisation point scale.
We construct the gauge field and graviton propagators in Euclidean AdS(d+1) space-time by two different methods. In the first method the gauge invariant Maxwell or linearized Ricci operator is applied directly to bitensor ansatze for the propagators which reflect their gauge structure. This leads to a rapid determination of the physical part of the propagators in terms of elementary functions. The second method is a more traditional approach using covariant gauge fixing which leads to a solution for both physical and gauge parts of the propagators. The gauge invariant parts agree in both metho…
We construct the graviton propagator on de Sitter background in exact de Donder gauge. We prove that it must break de Sitter invariance, just like the propagator of the massless, minimally coupled scalar. Our explicit solutions for its two scalar structure functions preserve spatial homogeneity and isotropy so that the propagator can be used within the larger context of inflationary cosmology, however, it is simple to alter the residual symmetry. Because our gauge condition is de Sitter invariant (although no solution for the propagator can be) renormalization should be simpler using this prop…
We study the graviton propagator in euclidean loop quantum gravity, using the spinfoam formalism. We use boundary-amplitude and group-field-theory techniques, and compute one component of the propagator to first order, under a number of approximations, obtaining the correct spacetime dependence. In the large distance limit, the only term of the vertex amplitude that contributes is the exponential of the Regge action: the other terms, that have raised doubts on the physical viability of the model, are suppressed by the phase of the vacuum state, which is determined by the extrinsic geometry of …
The two-point function of linearized gravitons on de Sitter space is infrared divergent in the standard transverse traceless synchronous gauge defined by $k=0$ cosmological coordinates (also called conformal or Poincare coordinates). We show that this divergence can be removed by adding a linearized diffeomorphism to each mode function; i.e., by an explicit change of gauge. It follows that the graviton vacuum state is well-defined and de Sitter invariant in agreement with various earlier arguments.
We compute some components of the graviton propagator in loop quantum gravity, using the spinfoam formalism, up to some second order terms in the expansion parameter.
It is known that the graviton two-point function for the de Sitter invariant "Euclidean" vacuum in a physical gauge grows logarithmically with distance in spatially-flat de Sitter spacetime. We show that this logarithmic behaviour is a gauge artifact by explicitly demonstrating that the same behaviour can be reproduced by a pure-gauge two-point function.
We compute the physical graviton two-point function in de Sitter spacetime with three-sphere spatial sections. We demonstrate that the large-distance growth present in the corresponding two-point function in spatially flat de Sitter spacetime is absent. We verify that our two-point function agrees with that in Minkowski spacetime in the zero cosmological constant limit.
We construct a de Sitter invariant photon propagator in general covariant gauges. Our result is a natural generalization of the Allen-Jacobson photon propagator in Feynman gauge. Our propagator reproduces the correct response to a point static charge and the one-loop electromagnetic stress-energy tensor, strongly suggesting that it is suitable for perturbative calculations on de Sitter.
We examine the scalar sector of the covariant graviton two-point function in de Sitter spacetime. This sector consists of the pure-trace part and another part described by a scalar field. We show that it does not contribute to two-point functions of gauge-invariant quantities. We also demonstrate that the long-distance growth present in some gauges is absent in this sector for a wide range of gauge parameters.
The two-point Wightman function of the free photon field defined in a gauge-invariant manner is known to be equivalent to the field-strength two-point function in any spacetime that is topologically trivial. We show that the gauge-invariant graviton two-point function defined in a similar manner is equivalent to the Weyl-tensor two-point function in Minkowski space and in the Poincare patch of de Sitter space. This implies that in the Poincare patch of de Sitter space the gauge-invariant graviton two-point function decays like (distance)^(-4) as a function of coordinate distance for spacelike …
We explicitly work out the de Sitter breaking contributions to the recent solution for the de Donder gauge graviton propagator on de Sitter. We also provide explicit power series expansions for the two structure functions, which are suitable for implementing dimensional regularization. And we evaluate the coincidence limit of the propagator.

We derive the graviton propagator on the brane for theories with quasi-localized gravity. In these models the ordinary 4D graviton is replaced by a resonance in the spectrum of massive Kaluza-Klein modes, which can decay into the extra dimension. We find that the effects of the extra polarization in the massive graviton propagator is exactly cancelled by the bending of the brane due to the matter sources, up to small corrections proportional to the width of the resonance. Thus at intermediate scales the classic predictions of Einstein's gravity are reproduced in these models to arbitrary preci…
Using on-shell amplitude methods, we explore 4-dimensional Electric-Magnetic duality and its double copy. We show explicitly that the on-shell scattering amplitudes know about `dual' photons (and dual gravitons), that the off-shell photon propagator double copies to the graviton propagator and that the magnetic part of the propagator is essential for the double copy to hold. We also show that there is an equivalent gravito-magnetic part of the graviton propagator which is essential in giving rise to solutions with either angular momentum or NUT charge. Furthermore, we comment on the so-called …
We use a simplified formalism to re-compute the single graviton loop contribution to the self-mass of a massless, conformally coupled scalar on de Sitter background which was originally made by Boran, Kahya and Park [1-3]. Our result resolves the problem with the flat space correspondence limit that was pointed out by Fröb [4]. We discuss how this computation will be used in a long-term project to purge the linearized effective field equation of gauge dependence.
We construct the graviton propagator in $n$-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime in the most general covariant gauge. We then study the behaviour of this propagator for different values of the gauge parameters. We will show that in any gauge, apart from the Landau gauge, the graviton propagator in the AdS spacetime contains a complicated term involving the derivative of a hypergeometric function which can not be expressed in terms of elementary functions. We do our calculations in the Euclidean approach.
We exploit a recent computation of one graviton loop corrections to the self-mass [1] to quantum-correct the field equation for a massless, conformally coupled scalar on a de Sitter background. With the obvious choice for the finite part of the $R^2 ϕ^2$ counterterm, we find that neither plane wave mode functions nor the response to a point source acquires large infrared logarithms. However, we do find a decaying logarithmic correction to the mode function and a short distance logarithmic running of the potential in addition to the power-law effect inherited from flat space.
We study the classical limit of the ELPR/FK spin foam models by analyzing the large-distance asymptotics of the corresponding graviton propagators. This is done by examining the large-spin asymptotics of the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction which is peaked around a classical flat spatial geometry. By using the stationary phase method we determine the wavefunction asymptotics. The obtained asymptotics does not give the desired large-distance asymptotics for the corresponding graviton propagator. However, we show that the ELPR/FK vertex amplitude can be redefined such that the corresponding Hartle-Ha…
It is known that the covariant graviton two-point function in de Sitter spacetime is infrared divergent for some choices of gauge parameters. On the other hand it is also known that there are no infrared divergences requiring an infrared cutoff for the physical graviton two-point function for this spacetime in the transverse-traceless-synchronous gauge in the global coordinate system. We show in this paper that the covariant graviton Wightman two-point function with two gauge parameters is equivalent to the physical one in the global coordinate system in the sense that they produce the same tw…
We consider time-ordered (or Feynman) propagators between two different $α-$states of a linear de Sitter Quantum Field in the global de Sitter manifold and in the Poincaré patch. We separately examine $α-β$, In-In and In-Out propagators and find the imaginary contribution to the effective actions. The In-In propagators are real in both the Poincaré patch and in the global de Sitter manifold. On the other side the In-Out propagators at coincident points contain finite imaginary contributions in both patches in even dimensions, but they are not equivalent. In odd dimensions in both patches the i…
We discuss the quantization of linearized gravity in the background de Sitter spacetime using a gauge-invariant formalism to write the perturbed gravitational field in the static patch. This field is quantized after fixing the gauge completely. The response rate of this field to monochromatic multipole sources is then computed in the thermal equilibrium state with the well known Gibbons-Hawking temperature. We compare this response rate with the one obtained in the Bunch-Davies-like vacuum state defined in the Poincaré patch. These response rates are found to be the same as expected. This agre…
We construct the scalar and graviton propagator in quasi de Sitter space up to first order in the slow roll parameter $ε\equiv -\dot{H}/H^2$. After a rescaling, the propagators are similar to those in de Sitter space with an $ε$ correction to the effective mass. The limit $ε\to 0$ corresponds to the E(3) vacuum that breaks de Sitter symmetry, but does not break spatial isotropy and homogeneity. The new propagators allow for a self-consistent, dynamical study of quantum back-reaction effects during inflation.
We calculate graviton multi-point amplitudes in an anti-de Sitter black brane background for higher-derivative gravity of arbitrary order in numbers of derivatives. The calculations are performed using tensor graviton modes in a particular regime of comparatively high energies and large scattering angles. The regime simplifies the calculations but, at the same time, is well suited for translating these results into the language of the dually related gauge theory. After considering theories of up to eight derivatives, we generalize to even higher-derivative theories by constructing a "basis" fo…
We evaluate the one-graviton loop contribution to the vacuum polarization on de Sitter background in a 1-parameter family of exact, de Sitter invariant gauges. Our result is computed using dimensional regularization and fully renormalized with BPHZ counterterms, which must include a noninvariant owing to the time-ordered interactions. Because the graviton propagator engenders a physical breaking of de Sitter invariance two structure functions are needed to express the result. In addition to its relevance for the gauge issue this is the first time a covariant gauge graviton propagator has been …
In this article we present results for tensor graviton modes (in seven dimensions and greater, $n\geq 3$) for greybody factors of Kerr-dS black holes and for Hawking radiation from simply rotating (n+4)-dimensional Kerr black holes. Although there is some subtlety with defining the Hawking temperature of a Kerr-dS black hole, we present some preliminary results for emissions assuming the standard Hawking normalization and a Bousso-Hawking-like normalization.
The propagators of the Faddeev-Popov (FP) ghosts for Yang-Mills theories and perturbative quantum gravity in the covariant gauge are infrared (IR) divergent in de Sitter spacetime. We point out, however, that the modes responsible for these divergences will not contribute to loop diagrams in computations of time-ordered products in either Yang-Mills theories or perturbative quantum gravity. Therefore we propose that the IR divergent FP-ghost propagator should be regularized by a small mass term that is sent to zero in the end of any perturbative calculations. This proposal is equivalent to usi…
In a spacetime with no global timelike Killing vector, we do not have a natural choice for the vacuum state of matter fields, leading to an ambiguity in defining the Feynman propagators. In this paper, taking the vacuum state to be the instantaneous ground state of the Hamiltonian at each moment, we develop a method for calculating wave functions associated with the vacuum and the corresponding in-in and in-out propagators. We apply this method to free scalar field theory in de Sitter space and obtain de Sitter invariant propagators in various coordinate patches. We show that the in-out propag…
We show that if the flat-spacetime wavefunction in the spin network basis of Loop Quantum Gravity has a large-spin asymptotics given by Rovelli's ansatz then the corresponding graviton propagator has the correct large-distance asymptotics nonperturbatively and independently of the spin foam model used to describe the evolution operator. We also argue that even in the Rovelli approach the wavefunction should satisfy the Hamiltonian constraint and we give an explanation for the spin parameter appearing in Rovelli's ansatz.
We review the construction of the tensorial structure of the graviton propagator in the context of loop quantum gravity and spinfoam formalism. The main result of this analysis is that applying the same strategy used to compute the diagonal terms, the Barrett-Crane vertex is unable to yield the correct propagator in the long distance limit. The problem is in the intertwiner-independence of the Barrett-Crane vertex. We also review the asymptotic behavior of an alternative vertex that is able to give the correct propagator.
We derive a noncovariant but simple representation for the self-energy of a conformally transformed graviton field on the cosmological patch of de Sitter. Our representation involves four structure functions, as opposed to the two that would be necessary for a manifestly de Sitter invariant representation. We work out what the four structure functions are for the one loop correction due to a massless, minimally coupled scalar. And we employ the result to work out what happens to dynamical gravitons.
We employ a recent, general gauge computation of the one loop graviton contribution to the vacuum polarization on de Sitter to solve for one loop corrections to the photon mode function. The vacuum polarization takes the form of a gauge independent, spin 2 contribution and a gauge dependent, spin 0 contribution. We show that the leading secular corrections derive entirely from the spin 2 contribution.
We compute 1-loop corrections to Lorentz-signature de Sitter-invariant 2-point functions defined by the interacting Euclidean vacuum for massive scalar quantum fields with cubic and quartic interactions. Our results apply to all masses for which the free Euclidean de Sitter vacuum is well-defined, including values in both the complimentary and the principal series of SO(D,1). In dimensions where the interactions are renormalizeable we provide absolutely convergent integral representations of the corrections. These representations suffice to analytically extract the leading behavior of the 2-po…
I briefly review the advancements in the construction of the graviton propagator in the context of LQG and Spinfoam Models. In particular the problems of the Barrett-Crane vertex in giving the correct long-distance limit and the introduction of the new corrected models. This kind of calculation applied to an alternative vertex with given asymptotic can give the correct propagator and is then able to help selecting spinfoam models. In particular the study of the asymptotic properties of the new models shows the predicted behavior able to overcome the BC difficulties and to give the correct prop…
Graviton propagator diverges in certain gauges in de Sitter spacetime. We address this problem in this work by generalizing the infinitesimal BRST transformations in de Sitter spacetime to finite field-dependent BRST (FFBRST) transformations. These FFBRST transformations are symmetry of the classical action, but do not leave path integral measure invariant for the graviton theory in de Sitter spacetime. Due to the non-trivial Jacobian of such finite transformation the path integral measure changes and hence FFBRST transformation is capable of relating theories in two different gauges. We expli…
We construct the graviton propagator on de Sitter background in the one parameter family of exact, de Sitter invariant gauges. Our result takes the form of a universal spin two part and a gauge dependent spin zero part. Scalar equations are derived for the structure functions of each part. There is no de Sitter invariant solution for either structure function, although the de Sitter breaking contribution to the spin zero part may drop out for certain choices of the gauge parameter. Our results imply that de Sitter breaking is universal for the graviton propagator, and hence that there is an er…
This is the second in a series of papers investigating the formulation of the simplified Dark Matter models with graviton mediators in cosmological backgrounds. We address here the crucial problem of the fundamental observable of interest, namely the graviton spectrum in a FRW cosmological background with an arbitrary Dark Matter background component. We calculate the correction to the free graviton two-point function up to the second order in the coupling constant between the Dark Matter and the graviton in the simplified Dark Matter model with graviton mediators approach in the de Sitter spa…
We derive the effects of the scalar particle production on the physical graviton operator in the de Sitter space. Our analysis is done for the sub-horizon modes at large values of the conformal time. In this limit, we completely determine the correction to the scalar energy-momentum tensor at the first order in the WKB iteration. Also, we calculate the corresponding correction to the graviton operator for a single sub-horizon mode.
The scale invariance of the quantum fluctuations in de Sitter space leads to the appearance of de Sitter symmetry breaking infra-red logarithms in the graviton propagator. We investigate physical effects of soft gravitons on the local dynamics of matter fields well inside the cosmological horizon. We show that the IR logarithms do not spoil Lorentz invariance in scalar and Dirac field theory. The leading IR logarithms can be absorbed by a time dependent wave function renormalization factor in the both cases. In the interacting field theory with $λϕ^4$ and Yukawa interaction, we find that the c…
In our previous paper (Phys. Rev. D 94, 104030 (2016)), inspired by the work of Allen and Turyn (Nucl. Phys. B 292, 813 (1987)), we expressed the graviton two-point function in terms of maximally symmetric bitensors in de Sitter spacetime. Quite contrary to the result of their work, however, we explicitly showed that the de Sitter symmetry breaking is universal and the associated infrared divergences cannot be gauged away. In this Letter, the origin of this contradiction, which is greatly related to the well-known scientific dispute about the infrared behavior of the graviton two-point functio…
We extend our investigation of soft graviton effects on the microscopic dynamics of matter fields in de Sitter space. We evaluate the quantum equation of motion in generic gauge theories. We find that the Lorentz invariance can be respected and the velocity of light is not renormalized at the one-loop level. The gauge coupling constant is universally screened by soft gravitons and diminishes with time. These features are in common with other four dimensional field theories with dimensionless couplings. In particular the couplings scale with time with definite scaling exponents. Although indivi…
We construct explicit mode expansions of various tree-level propagators in the Rindler -- de Sitter universe, also known as the static (or compact) patch of the de Sitter spacetime. We construct in particular the Wightman functions for thermal states having a generic temperature $T$. We give a fresh simple proof that the only thermal Wightman propagator that respects the de Sitter isometry is the restriction to the Rindler -- de Sitter wedge of the propagator for the Bunch--Davies state. It is the thermal state with $T = (2 π)^{-1}$ in the units of de Sitter curvature. We show that propagators…
We study quantum gravitational perturbations in the static patch of de Sitter space. In particular, we determine the symplectic inner product of these perturbations and use it to write down the graviton two-point function in the state analogous to the Bunch-Davies vacuum in a certain gauge. We find this two-point function to be infrared-finite and time-translation invariant.
We use the Hartree approximation to the Einstein equation on de Sitter background to solve for the one loop correction to the graviton mode function. This should give a reasonable approximation to how the ensemble of inflationary gravitons affects a single external graviton. At late times we find that the one loop correction to the plane wave mode function $u(η,k)$ goes like $G H^2 \ln(a)/a^2$, where $a$ is the inflationary scale factor. One consequence is that the one loop corrections to the "electric" components of the linearized Weyl tensor grow compared to the tree order result.
