Machine learning (ML) has become an attractive tool in information processing, however few ML algorithms have been successfully applied in the quantum domain. We show here how classical reinforcement learning (RL) could be used as a tool for quantum state engineering (QSE). We employ a measurement based control for QSE where the action sequences are determined by the choice of the measurement basis and the reward through the fidelity of obtaining the target state. Our analysis clearly displays a learning feature in QSE, for example in preparing arbitrary two-qubit entangled states. It delivers successful action sequences, that generalise previously found human solutions from exact quantum dynamics. We provide a systematic algorithmic approach for using RL algorithms for quantum protocols that deal with non-trivial continuous state (parameter) space, and discuss on scaling of these approaches for preparation of arbitrarily large entangled (cluster) states.
Engineering desired Hamiltonian in quantum many-body systems is essential for applications such as quantum simulation, computation and sensing. Conventional quantum Hamiltonian engineering sequences are designed using human intuition based on perturbation theory, which may not describe the optimal solution and is unable to accommodate complex experimental imperfections. Here we numerically search for Hamiltonian engineering sequences using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques and experimentally demonstrate that they outperform celebrated sequences on a solid-state nuclear magnetic reso…
We apply the time-dependent decoherence-free subspace theory to a Markovian open quantum system in order to present a novel proposal for quantum-state engineering program. By quantifying the purity of the quantum state, we verify that the quantum-state engineering process designed via our method is completely unitary within any total engineering time. Even though the controls on the open quantum system are not perfect, the asymptotic purity is still robust. Owing to its ability to completely resist decoherence and the lack of restraint in terms of the total engineering time, our proposal is su…
In this perspective I give my answer to the question of how quantum computing will impact on data-intensive applications in engineering and science. I focus on quantum Monte Carlo integration as a likely source of (relatively) near-term quantum advantage, but also discuss some other ideas that have garnered wide-spread interest.
We prove a generalization of the Lindblad's fundamental no-go result: A quantum system cannot be completely frozen and, in some cases, even thermalized via translationally invariant dissipation -- the quantum friction. Nevertheless, a practical methodology is proposed for engineering nearly perfect quantum analogs of classical friction within the Doppler cooling framework. These findings pave the way for hallmark dissipative engineering (e.g. nonreciprocal couplings) with atoms and molecules.
We show that the effects of decoherence on quantum steering ellipsoids can be controlled by a specific reservoir manipulating, in both Markovian and non-Markovian realms. Therefore, the so-called maximal steered coherence could be protected through reservoir engineering implemented by coupling auxiliary qubits to the reservoir.
We show that specific quantum noise, acting as an open-system reservoir for non-locally entangled atoms, can serve to preserve rather than degrade joint coherence. This creates a new type of long-time control over hiding and recovery of quantum entanglement.
We describe different strategies for using a semi-classical controller to engineer quantum Hamiltonians to solve control problems such as quantum state or process engineering or optimization of observables.
We present a proposal for protecting states against decoherence, based on the engineering of pointer states. We apply this procedure to the vibrational motion of a trapped ion, and show how to protect qubits, squeezed states, approximate phase eigenstates and superpositions of coherent states.
We give an overview of different paradigms for control of quantum systems and their applications, illustrated with specific examples. We further discuss the implications of fault-tolerance requirements for quantum process engineering using optimal control, and explore the possibilities for architecture simplification and effective control using a minimum number of simple switch actuators.
The possibility to induce predetermined coherent quantum dynamics by controlling only the dissipative environmental parameters (such as temperature and pressure) is studied using the combined optimal control and environment engineering frameworks. As an example, we consider the problem of transforming an optically excited donor state into free charge carriers via intermediate higher-lying bridge state(s), with a view to solar energy conversion. In this context, vibrational bath engineering allows to promote fast, directional charge transfer and to suppress recombinative losses.
A novel scheme to realize the whole class of quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements of a field quadrature is suggested. The setup requires linear optical components and squeezers, and allows optimal QND measurements of quadratures, which minimize the information gain versus state disturbance trade-off.
We discuss applications of shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) to adiabatic quantum computation. After reviewing the fundamental properties and the present status of STA from the author's personal point of view, we apply the method to the adiabatic algorithm of the Grover's problem. We discuss two possible implementations of STA for the adiabatic quantum computations: the method of quantum adiabatic brachistochrone and the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant-based inverse engineering.
We describe a hybrid quantum system composed of a micrometer-size carbon nanotube (CNT) longitudinally coupled to a flux qubit. We demonstrate the usefulness of this device for generating high-fidelity nonclassical states of the CNT via dissipative quantum engineering. Sideband cooling of the CNT to its ground state and generating a squeezed ground state, as a mechanical analogue of the optical squeezed vacuum, are two additional examples of the dissipative quantum engineering studied here. Moreover, we show how to generate a long-lived macroscopically-distinct superposition (i.e., a Schröding…
Quantum reinforcement learning (QRL) models augment classical reinforcement learning schemes with quantum-enhanced kernels. Different proposals on how to construct such models empirically show a promising performance. In particular, these models might offer a reduced parameter count and shorter times to reach a solution than classical models. It is however presently unclear how these quantum-enhanced kernels as subroutines within a reinforcement learning pipeline need to be constructed to indeed result in an improved performance in comparison to classical models. In this work we exactly addres…
We address quantum state engineering of single- and two-mode states by means of non-deterministic noiseless linear amplifiers (NLAs) acting on Gaussian states. In particular, we show that NLAs provide an effective scheme to generate highly non-Gaussian and non-classical states. Additionally, we show that the amplification of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (twin-beam) may highly increase entanglement.
Manipulate and control of the complex quantum system with high precision are essential for achieving universal fault tolerant quantum computing. For a physical system with restricted control resources, it is a challenge to control the dynamics of the target system efficiently and precisely under disturbances. Here we propose a multi-level dissipative quantum control framework and show that deep reinforcement learning provides an efficient way to identify the optimal strategies with restricted control parameters of the complex quantum system. This framework can be generalized to be applied to o…
We propose a general experimental quantum state engineering scheme for the high-fidelity conditional generation of a large variety of nonclassical states of traveling optical fields. It contains a single measurement, thereby achieving a high success probability. The generated state is encoded in the optimal choice of the physically controllable parameters of the arrangement. These parameter values are determined via numerical optimization.
Quantum error correction in general is experimentally challenging as it requires significant expansion of the size of quantum circuits and accurate performance of quantum gates to fulfill the error threshold requirement. Here we propose a method much simpler for experimental implementation to correct arbitrary detection errors. The method is based on processing of data from repetitive experiments and can correct detection error of any magnitude, as long as the error magnitude is calibrated. The method is illustrated with its application to detection of multipartite entanglement from quantum st…
The capability to generate and manipulate quantum states in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces is a crucial step for the development of quantum technologies, from quantum communication to quantum computation. One-dimensional quantum walk dynamics represents a valid tool in the task of engineering arbitrary quantum states. Here we affirm such potential in a linear-optics platform that realizes discrete-time quantum walks in the orbital angular momentum degree of freedom of photons. Different classes of relevant qudit states in a six-dimensional space are prepared and measured, confirming the feasi…
Quantum state preparation in high-dimensional systems is an essential requirement for many quantum-technology applications. The engineering of an arbitrary quantum state is, however, typically strongly dependent on the experimental platform chosen for implementation, and a general framework is still missing. Here we show that coined quantum walks on a line, which represent a framework general enough to encompass a variety of different platforms, can be used for quantum state engineering of arbitrary superpositions of the walker's sites. We achieve this goal by identifying a set of conditions t…
Using the concept of spectral engineering we explore the possibilities of building potentials with prescribed spectra offered by a modified intertwining technique involving operators which are the product of a standard first-order intertwiner and a unitary scaling. In the same context we study the iterations of such transformations finding that the scaling intertwining provides a different and richer mechanism in designing quantum spectra with respect to that given by the standard intertwining
We discuss a novel method of efficiently producing multi-photon states using repeated spontaneous parametric downconversion. Specifically, by attempting downconversion several times, we can pseudo-deterministically add photons to a mode, producing various several-photon states. We discuss both expected performance and experimental limitations.
In this paper we discuss how we can design Hamiltonians to implement quantum algorithms, in particular we focus in Deutsch and Grover algorithms. As main result of this paper, we show how Hamiltonian inverse quantum engineering method allow us to obtain feasible and time-independent Hamiltonians for implementing such algorithms. From our approach for the Deutsch algorithm, different from others techniques, we can provide an alternative approach for implementing such algorithm where no auxiliary qubit and additional resources are required. In addition, by using a single quantum evolution, the G…
Several concrete examples in quantum information are discussed to demonstrate the importance of proper modeling that relates the mathematical description to real-world applications. In particular, it is shown that some commonly accepted conclusions are not adequately supported by their purported justifications in the logical manner required.
We analyze the fidelity of the generalized Pauli channels governed by memory kernel master equations. It is shown that, by appropriate engineering of parameters of the corresponding memory kernel, the quantum evolution with non-local noise can have higher fidelity than the corresponding purely Markovian evolution governed by the Markovian semigroup. Similar engineering can substantially influence the evolution of quantum entanglement, entropy, and quantum coherence.
An entanglement-preserving photo-detector converts photon polarization to electron spin. Up and down spin must respond equally to oppositely polarized photons, creating a requirement for degenerate spin energies, ge=0 for electrons. We present a plot of ge-factor versus lattice constant, analogous to bandgap versus lattice constant, that can be used for g-factor engineering of III-V alloys and quantum wells
In this paper, we propose a concept to use a quantum speed limit (QSL) as a measure of robustness of states, defining that a state with bigger QSL is more robust. In this perspective, it is important to have an explicitly-computable QSL, because then we can formulate an engineering problem of Hamiltonian that makes a target state robust against decoherence. Hence we derive a new explicitly-computable QSL that is applicable to general Markovian open quantum systems. This QSL is tighter than another explicitly-computable QSL, in an important setup such that decoherence is small. Also the Hamilto…
We study a coherent superposition of field annihilation and creation operator acting on continuous variable systems and propose its application for quantum state engineering. Specifically, it is investigated how the superposed operation transforms a classical state to a nonclassical one, together with emerging nonclassical effects. We also propose an experimental scheme to implement this elementary coherent operation and discuss its usefulness to produce an arbitrary superposition of number states involving up to two photons.
We investigate which non-Gaussian resources are needed, in addition to Gaussian operations and measurements, for implementation of arbitrary quantum gates on multimode quantum states of light. We show that an arbitrary set of states with finite expansion in Fock basis is sufficient for this task. As an illustration we present an explicit scheme for probabilistic implementation of the nonlinear sign gate using resource non-Gaussian states and Gaussian operations.
Variational hybrid quantum-classical algorithms are some of the most promising workloads for near-term quantum computers without error correction. The aim of these variational algorithms is to guide the quantum system to a target state that minimizes a cost function, by varying certain parameters in a quantum circuit. This paper proposes a new approach for engineering cost functions to improve the performance of a certain class of these variational algorithms on today's small qubit systems. We apply this approach to a variational algorithm that generates thermofield double states of the transv…
Quantum state engineering, namely the generation and control of arbitrary quantum states, is drawing more and more attention due to its wide applications in quantum information and computation. However, there is no general method in theory, and the existing schemes also depend heavily on the selected experimental platform. In this manuscript, we give two schemes for the engineering task of arbitrary quantum state in $c$-partite $d$-dimensional system, both of which are based on discrete-time quantum walk with a $2^c$-dimensional time- and position-dependent coin. The first procedure is a $d$-s…
We discuss prospects of building hybrid quantum devices involving elements of atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics and solid state elements with the attempt to combine advantages of the respective systems in compatible experimental setups. In particular, we summarize our recent work on quantum hybrid devices and briefly discuss recent ideas for quantum networks. These include interfacing of molecular quantum memory with circuit QED, and using nanomechanical elements strongly coupled to qubits represented by electronic spins, as well as single atoms or atomic ensembles.
We propose a robust scheme to generate single-photon Fock states and atom-photon and atom-atom entanglement in atom-cavity systems. We also present a scheme for quantum networking between two cavity nodes using an atomic channel. The mechanism is based on Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP) and half-SCRAP processes in a microwave cavity. The engineering of these states depends on the design of the adiabatic dynamics through the static and dynamic Stark shifts.
Quantum engineering seeks to create novel technologies based on the exploitation of distinctly nonclassical behaviors such as quantum superposition. The vast majority of currently pursued applications fall into the domain of quantum information science, with quantum computing as the most visible subdomain. However, other applications of quantum engineering are fast emerging. Here, we review the deployment of quantum engineering principles in the fields of solar energy, batteries, and nuclear energy. We identify commonalities across quantum engineering approaches in those apparently disparate f…
Quantum speed limits for two time-evolved states are introduced and applied to overlap between true dynamics and approximate dynamics. In particular, we point out that the present idea is suitable for invariant-based inverse engineering, i.e., the worst case performance of invariant-based inverse engineering can be evaluated by using a designed time-evolved state. As demonstrations, we apply the present method to stimulated Raman adiabatic passage and quantum annealing, and then we find that the present idea brings valuable insight to control scheduling.
We develop a general method for incentive-based programming of hybrid quantum-classical computing systems using reinforcement learning, and apply this to solve combinatorial optimization problems on both simulated and real gate-based quantum computers. Relative to a set of randomly generated problem instances, agents trained through reinforcement learning techniques are capable of producing short quantum programs which generate high quality solutions on both types of quantum resources. We observe generalization to problems outside of the training set, as well as generalization from the simulat…

Reservoir engineering is a powerful tool for the robust generation of quantum states or transport properties. Using both a weak-coupling quantum master equation and the exact solution, we show that directional transport of electrons through a double quantum dot can be achieved through an appropriately designed electronic environment. Directionality is attained through the interference of coherent and dissipative coupling. The relative phase is tuned with an external magnetic field, such that directionality can be reversed, as well as turned on and off dynamically. Our work introduces fermionic…

We generalize a standard benchmark of reinforcement learning, the classical cartpole balancing problem, to the quantum regime by stabilizing a particle in an unstable potential through measurement and feedback. We use state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning to stabilize a quantum cartpole and find that our deep learning approach performs comparably to or better than other strategies in standard control theory. Our approach also applies to measurement-feedback cooling of quantum oscillators, showing the applicability of deep learning to general continuous-space quantum control.
