Deep clustering has increasingly been demonstrating superiority over conventional shallow clustering algorithms. Deep clustering algorithms usually combine representation learning with deep neural networks to achieve this performance, typically optimizing a clustering and non-clustering loss. In such cases, an autoencoder is typically connected with a clustering network, and the final clustering is jointly learned by both the autoencoder and clustering network. Instead, we propose to learn an autoencoded embedding and then search this further for the underlying manifold. For simplicity, we then cluster this with a shallow clustering algorithm, rather than a deeper network. We study a number of local and global manifold learning methods on both the raw data and autoencoded embedding, concluding that UMAP in our framework is best able to find the most clusterable manifold in the embedding, suggesting local manifold learning on an autoencoded embedding is effective for discovering higher quality discovering clusters. We quantitatively show across a range of image and time-series datasets that our method has competitive performance against the latest deep clustering algorithms, including out-performing current state-of-the-art on several. We postulate that these results show a promising research direction for deep clustering. The code can be found at https://github.com/rymc/n2d
Researchers have used from 30 days to several years of daily returns as source data for clustering financial time series based on their correlations. This paper sets up a statistical framework to study the validity of such practices. We first show that clustering correlated random variables from their observed values is statistically consistent. Then, we also give a first empirical answer to the much debated question: How long should the time series be? If too short, the clusters found can be spurious; if too long, dynamics can be smoothed out.

Clustering large amount of data is becoming increasingly important in the current times. Due to the large sizes of data, clustering algorithm often take too much time. Sampling this data before clustering is commonly used to reduce this time. In this work, we propose a probabilistic sampling technique called cube sampling along with K-Prototype clustering. Cube sampling is used because of its accurate sample selection. K-Prototype is most frequently used clustering algorithm when the data is numerical as well as categorical (very common in today's time). The novelty of this work is in obtainin…

Unsupervised clustering algorithms for vectors has been widely used in the area of machine learning. Many applications, including the biological data we studied in this paper, contain some boundary datapoints which show combination properties of two underlying clusters and could lower the performance of the traditional clustering algorithms. We develop a confident clustering method aiming to diminish the influence of these datapoints and improve the clustering results. Concretely, for a list of datapoints, we give two clustering results. The first-round clustering attempts to classify only pur…

Fast diagnosis and treatment of pneumothorax, a collapsed or dropped lung, is crucial to avoid fatalities. Pneumothorax is typically detected on a chest X-ray image through visual inspection by experienced radiologists. However, the detection rate is quite low. Therefore, there is a strong need for automated detection systems to assist radiologists. Despite the high accuracy levels generally reported for deep learning classifiers in many applications, they may not be useful in clinical practice due to the lack of large number of high-quality labelled images as well as a lack of interpretation …
We propose an algorithm, HPREF (Hierarchical Partitioning by Repeated Features), that produces a hierarchical partition of a set of clusterings of a fixed dataset, such as sets of clusterings produced by running a clustering algorithm with a range of parameters. This gives geometric structure to such sets of clustering, and can be used to visualize the set of results one obtains by running a clustering algorithm with a range of parameters.

Clustering is one of the most fundamental tools in the artificial intelligence area, particularly in the pattern recognition and learning theory. In this paper, we propose a simple, but novel approach for variance-based k-clustering tasks, included in which is the widely known k-means clustering. The proposed approach picks a sampling subset from the given dataset and makes decisions based on the data information in the subset only. With certain assumptions, the resulting clustering is provably good to estimate the optimum of the variance-based objective with high probability. Extensive experi…

Semidefinite programming (SDP) is a powerful tool for tackling a wide range of computationally hard problems such as clustering. Despite the high accuracy, semidefinite programs are often too slow in practice with poor scalability on large (or even moderate) datasets. In this paper, we introduce a linear time complexity algorithm for approximating an SDP relaxed $K$-means clustering. The proposed sketch-and-lift (SL) approach solves an SDP on a subsampled dataset and then propagates the solution to all data points by a nearest-centroid rounding procedure. It is shown that the SL approach enjoy…

In neuroscience, the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a vital tool to non-invasively access brain activity. Using fMRI, the functional connectivity (FC) between brain regions can be inferred, which has contributed to a number of findings of the fundamental properties of the brain. As an important clinical application of FC, clustering of subjects based on FC recently draws much attention, which can potentially reveal important heterogeneity in subjects such as subtypes of psychiatric disorders. In particular, a multiple-view clustering method is a powerful analytical tool, which…

Unsupervised learning is widely recognized as one of the most important challenges facing machine learning nowa- days. However, in spite of hundreds of papers on the topic being published every year, current theoretical understanding and practical implementations of such tasks, in particular of clustering, is very rudimentary. This note focuses on clustering. I claim that the most signif- icant challenge for clustering is model selection. In contrast with other common computational tasks, for clustering, dif- ferent algorithms often yield drastically different outcomes. Therefore, the choice o…

Clustering algorithms have become a popular tool in computer security to analyze the behavior of malware variants, identify novel malware families, and generate signatures for antivirus systems. However, the suitability of clustering algorithms for security-sensitive settings has been recently questioned by showing that they can be significantly compromised if an attacker can exercise some control over the input data. In this paper, we revisit this problem by focusing on behavioral malware clustering approaches, and investigate whether and to what extent an attacker may be able to subvert thes…

Clustering is an unsupervised technique of Data Mining. It means grouping similar objects together and separating the dissimilar ones. Each object in the data set is assigned a class label in the clustering process using a distance measure. This paper has captured the problems that are faced in real when clustering algorithms are implemented .It also considers the most extensively used tools which are readily available and support functions which ease the programming. Once algorithms have been implemented, they also need to be tested for its validity. There exist several validation indexes for…

Across many areas, from neural tracking to database entity resolution, manual assessment of clusters by human experts presents a bottleneck in rapid development of scalable and specialized clustering methods. To solve this problem we develop C-FAR, a novel method for Fast, Automated and Reproducible assessment of multiple hierarchical clustering algorithms simultaneously. Our algorithm takes any number of hierarchical clustering trees as input, then strategically queries pairs for human feedback, and outputs an optimal clustering among those nominated by these trees. While it is applicable to …
This paper presents a new clustering algorithm for space-time data based on the concepts of topological data analysis and in particular, persistent homology. Employing persistent homology - a flexible mathematical tool from algebraic topology used to extract topological information from data - in unsupervised learning is an uncommon and a novel approach. A notable aspect of this methodology consists in analyzing data at multiple resolutions which allows to distinguish true features from noise based on the extent of their persistence. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm on synthetic da…
Clustering is a powerful tool in data analysis, but it is often difficult to find a grouping that aligns with a user's needs. To address this, several methods incorporate constraints obtained from users into clustering algorithms, but unfortunately do not apply to hierarchical clustering. We design an interactive Bayesian algorithm that incorporates user interaction into hierarchical clustering while still utilizing the geometry of the data by sampling a constrained posterior distribution over hierarchies. We also suggest several ways to intelligently query a user. The algorithm, along with th…
Big Data is a massive volume of both structured and unstructured data that is too large and it also difficult to process using traditional techniques. Clustering algorithms have developed as a powerful learning tool that can exactly analyze the volume of data that produced by modern applications. Clustering in data mining is the grouping of a particular set of objects based on their characteristics. The main aim of clustering is to classified data into clusters such that objects are grouped in the same clusters when they are corresponding according to similarities and features mainly. Till now…

Deep learning will play a crucial role in enabling cognitive automation for the mobile networks of the future. Deep clustering, a subset of deep learning, could be a valuable tool for many network automation use-cases. Unfortunately, most state-of-the-art clustering algorithms target image datasets, which makes them hard to apply to mobile network data due to their highly tuned nature and related assumptions about the data. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, DANCE (Decorrelating Adversarial Nets for Clustering-friendly Encoding), intended to be a reliable deep clustering method which a…
We study the task of differentially private clustering. For several basic clustering problems, including Euclidean DensestBall, 1-Cluster, k-means, and k-median, we give efficient differentially private algorithms that achieve essentially the same approximation ratios as those that can be obtained by any non-private algorithm, while incurring only small additive errors. This improves upon existing efficient algorithms that only achieve some large constant approximation factors. Our results also imply an improved algorithm for the Sample and Aggregate privacy framework. Furthermore, we show tha…
Clustering is a popular unsupervised learning tool often used to discover groups within a larger population such as customer segments, or patient subtypes. However, despite its use as a tool for subgroup discovery and description - few state-of-the-art algorithms provide any rationale or description behind the clusters found. We propose a novel approach for interpretable clustering that both clusters data points and constructs polytopes around the discovered clusters to explain them. Our framework allows for additional constraints on the polytopes - including ensuring that the hyperplanes cons…
With rapidly increasing data, clustering algorithms are important tools for data analytics in modern research. They have been successfully applied to a wide range of domains; for instance, bioinformatics, speech recognition, and financial analysis. Formally speaking, given a set of data instances, a clustering algorithm is expected to divide the set of data instances into the subsets which maximize the intra-subset similarity and inter-subset dissimilarity, where a similarity measure is defined beforehand. In this work, the state-of-the-arts clustering algorithms are reviewed from design conce…

We study identifying user clusters in contextual multi-armed bandits (MAB). Contextual MAB is an effective tool for many real applications, such as content recommendation and online advertisement. In practice, user dependency plays an essential role in the user's actions, and thus the rewards. Clustering similar users can improve the quality of reward estimation, which in turn leads to more effective content recommendation and targeted advertising. Different from traditional clustering settings, we cluster users based on the unknown bandit parameters, which will be estimated incrementally. In …

In solving hard computational problems, semidefinite program (SDP) relaxations often play an important role because they come with a guarantee of optimality. Here, we focus on a popular semidefinite relaxation of K-means clustering which yields the same solution as the non-convex original formulation for well segregated datasets. We report an unexpected finding: when data contains (greater than zero-dimensional) manifolds, the SDP solution captures such geometrical structures. Unlike traditional manifold embedding techniques, our approach does not rely on manually defining a kernel but rather …
It is a high-quality algorithm for hierarchical clustering of large software source code. This effectively allows to break the complexity of tens of millions lines of source code, so that a human software engineer can comprehend a software system at high level by means of looking at its architectural diagram that is reconstructed automatically from the source code of the software system. The architectural diagram shows a tree of subsystems having OOP classes in its leaves (in the other words, a nested software decomposition). The tool reconstructs the missing (inconsistent/incomplete/inexisten…
