Nearby young stellar moving groups have been identified by many research groups with different methods and criteria giving rise to cautions on the reality of some groups. We aim to utilise moving groups in an unbiased way to create a list of unambiguously recognisable moving groups and their members. For the analysis, two unsupervised machine learning algorithms (K-means and Agglomerative Clustering) are applied to previously known bona fide members of nine moving groups from our previous study. As a result of this study, we recovered six previously known groups (AB Doradus, Argus, $β$-Pic, Carina, TWA, and Volans-Carina). Three the other known groups are recognised as well; however, they are combined into two new separate groups (ThOr+Columba and TucHor+Columba).
We describe our all-sky survey for >M4 candidate members to nearby, young associations from the 2MASS and WISE catalogs using bayesian inference. We report the first results, including 38 highly probable candidates showing spectroscopic signs of low-gravity (and thus youth). The latest of these objects would correspond to a 11 - 13 MJup object, around the limit of the planetary regime.
The reality of a field Argus Association has been doubted in some papers in the literature. We apply Gaia DR2 data to stars previously suggested to be Argus members and conclude that a true association exists with age 40-50 Myr and containing many stars within 100 pc of Earth; Beta Leo and 49 Cet are two especially interesting members. Based on youth and proximity to Earth, Argus is one of the better nearby moving groups to target in direct imaging programs for dusty debris disks and young planets.
Beginning with the enigmatic (and now emblematic) TW Hya, the scutiny of individual stars and star-disk systems has both motivated and benefitted from the identification of nearby young moving groups (NYMGs). I briefly outline the emergence of this relatively new subfield of astronomy over the past two decades, and offer a few examples illustrating how the study of NYMGs and their members enables unique investigations of pre-main sequence stellar evolution, evolved protoplanetary disks, and young exoplanets.
It has recently been shown that a significant fraction of late-type members of nearby, very young associations (age <10 Myr) display excess emission at mid-IR wavelengths indicative of dusty circumstellar disks. We demonstrate that the detection of mid-IR excess emission can be utilized to identify new nearby, young, late-type stars including two definite new members ("TWA 33" and "TWA 34") of the TW Hydrae Association. Both new TWA members display mid-IR excess emission in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) catalog and they show proper motion and youthful spectroscopic characteris…
The past two decades have seen dramatic progress in our knowledge of the population of young stars of age $< 200\,$Myr that lie within $150\,$pc of the Sun. These nearby, young stars, most of which are found in loose, comoving groups, provide the opportunity to explore (among many other things) the dissolution of stellar clusters and their diffusion into the field star population. Here, we exploit the combination of astrometric and photometric data from {\it Gaia} and photometric data from GALEX (UV) and 2MASS (near-IR) in an attempt to identify additional nearby, young, late-type stars. Speci…
The Galex Nearby Young Star Survey (GALNYSS) has yielded a sample of $\sim$2000 UV-selected objects that are candidate nearby ($D \stackrel{<}{\sim}$150 pc), young (age $\sim$10--100 Myr), late-type stars. Here, we evaluate the distances and ages of the subsample of (19) GALNYSS stars with Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) parallax distances $D \le 120$ pc. The overall youth of these 19 mid-K to early-M stars is readily apparent from their positions relative to the loci of main sequence stars and giants in Gaia-based color-magnitude and color-color diagrams constructed for all Galex- and WISE-detected…
In this research note we identify 130 new M-type candidate members of young associations with the BANYAN $Σ$ tool and recently published trigonometric distances from RECONS and URAT-South. We identify a white dwarf candidate in the AB Doradus moving group, but determine that its cooling age is too large and reject it as a member. Three stars (G 13-39, LHS 2935 and G 152-1) now have complete kinematics and are strong candidate members in the AB Doradus and Carina-Near moving groups, but still lack a confirmation of their young age independent of their kinematics.
We describe a method that exploits data from the GALEX ultraviolet and WISE and 2MASS infrared source catalogs, combined with proper motions and empirical pre-main sequence isochrones, to identify candidate nearby, young, low-mass stars. Applying our method across the full GALEX- covered sky, we identify 2031 mostly M-type stars that, for an assumed age of 10 (100) Myr, all lie within ~150 (~90) pc of Earth. The distribution of M spectral subclasses among these ~2000 candidate young stars peaks sharply in the range M3-M4; these subtypes constitute 50% of the sample, consistent with studies of …
In this paper we examine the nearest 100 pc entries in the data release 2 of Gaia to identify previously unrecognized candidate members in young associations. We analyze 695 952 stars with the BANYAN Σ Bayesian classification software and discover 898 new high-likelihood candidate members that span a wide range in properties, from spectral types B9 to L2, including 104 co-moving systems, 111 brown dwarfs and 31 new bona fide members. Our sample is mostly composed of highly active M dwarfs and will be crucial to examine the low-mass end of the initial mass function of young associations. Our sa…
We present a spectroscopic and kinematic analysis of 79 nearby M dwarfs in 77 systems. All are low-proper-motion southern hemisphere objects and were identified in a nearby star survey with a demonstrated sensitivity to young stars. Using low-resolution optical spectroscopy from the Red Side Spectrograph (RSS) on the South African Large Telescope (SALT), we have determined radial velocities, H-alpha, Lithium 6708Å, and Potassium 7699Å~equivalent widths linked to age and activity, and spectral types for all our targets. Combined with astrometric information from literature sources, we identify …
We describe a new method to identify young, late-type stars within ~150 pc of the Earth that employs visual or near-infrared data and the GALEX GR4/5 database. For spectral types later than K5, we demonstrate that the ratio of GALEX near-ultraviolet (NUV) to visual and near-IR emission is larger for stars with ages between 10 and 100 Myr than for older, main sequence stars. A search in regions of the sky encompassing the TW Hya and Scorpius-Centaurus Associations has returned 54 high-quality candidates for followup. Spectroscopic observations of 24 of these M1-M5 objects reveal Li 6708 angstro…
We exploit the precise parallaxes and proper motions contained in Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) to establish whether the proposed wide-separation companions to five nearby, young stars are in fact equidistant and comoving with these stars. For three of the proposed wide pairs --- TW Hya + 2M1102-34; HR 4796A + 2M1235-39; and V4046 Sgr AB + GSC 07396 --- the Gaia DR2 data confirm that the two stars lie at the same distance and are comoving (or nearly so), to within the measurement errors. We conclude that these three pairs indeed constitute wide-separation binaries with projected separations of 44.…
We present a search for stellar members of young associations within 150 pc of the Sun based on Gaia-Tycho and an updated version of the BANYAN $Σ$ software to determine Bayesian membership probabilities that includes Gaia-2MASS color-magnitude diagrams. We identify 32 new F0-M3-type bona fide members of the 10-200 Myr-old Sco-Cen, Carina, Tucana-Horologium, Columba and Octans associations and the AB Doradus, $β$ Pictoris and Carina-Near moving groups. These new bona fide members have measurements of their full kinematics and literature data consistent with a young age. We also confirm the mem…
Young and magnetically active low-mass stars often exhibit non-thermal coronal radio emission due to the gyration of electrons in their magnetized chromospheres. This emission is easily detectable at centimeter wavelengths with the current sensitivity of large radio interferometers like the VLA. With the aim of identifying nearby stars adequate for future accurate radio astrometric monitoring using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), we have used the VLA in its B\, configuration to search for radio emission at \mbox{$ν\simeq 6$\,GHz} \mbox{($λ\simeq 5$\,cm)} toward a sample of 170 nearby…
The solar galactic neighbourhood contains a number of young co-moving associations of stars (so-called `young moving groups') with ages of ~10--150 Myr, which are prime targets for a range of scientific studies, including direct imaging planet searches. The late-type stellar population of such groups still remain in their pre-main sequence phase, and are thus well suited for purposes such as isochronal dating. Close binaries are particularly useful in this regard, since they allow for a model-independent dynamical mass determination. Here we present a dedicated effort to identify new close bin…
Aims: We study the formation of substellar objects (exoplanets and brown dwarfs) as companions to young nearby stars. Methods: With high contrast AO imaging obtained with NACO at ESO's VLT we search for faint companion-candidates around our targets, whose companionship can be confirmed with astrometry. Results: In the course of our imaging campaign we found a faint substellar companion of the nearby pre-main sequence star PZ Tel, a member of the beta Pic moving group. The companion is 5-6 mag fainter than its host star in JHK and is located at a separation of only 0.3 arcsec (or 15 AU of proje…
The recently discovered coeval, moving groups of young stellar objects in the solar neighborhood represent invaluable laboratories to study recent star formation and to search for high metallicity stars which can be included in future exo-planet surveys. In this study we derived through an uniform and homogeneous method stellar atmospheric parameters and abundances for iron, silicium and nickel in 63 Post T-Tauri Stars from 11 nearby young associations. We further compare the results with two different pre-main sequence (PMS) and main sequence (MS) star populations. The stellar atmospheric par…
SONYC - Substellar Objects in Nearby Young Clusters - is a survey program to investigate the frequency and properties of brown dwarfs down to masses below the Deuterium burning limit in nearby star forming regions. In this second paper, we present results on the ~1 Myr old cluster Rho Ophiuchi, combining our own deep optical and near-infrared imaging using Subaru with photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey and the Spitzer Space Telescope. Of the candidates selected from iJKs photometry, we have confirmed three -- including a new brown dwarf with a mass close to the Deuterium limit -- as l…
We present the BANYAN All-Sky Survey (BASS) catalog, consisting of 228 new late-type (M4-L6) candidate members of nearby young moving groups (YMGs) with an expected false-positive rate of ~ 13%. This sample includes 79 new candidate young brown dwarfs and 22 planetary-mass objects. These candidates were identified through the first systematic all-sky survey for late-type low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in YMGs. We cross-matched the 2MASS and ALLWISE catalogs outside of the galactic plane to build a sample of 98 970 potential $\geq$ M5 dwarfs in the solar neighborhood and calculated their prope…
Late M-type dwarfs in the solar neighborhood include a mixture of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs which is difficult to disentangle due to the lack of constraints on their age such as trigonometric parallax, lithium detection and space velocity. We search for young brown dwarf candidates among a sample of 28 nearby late-M dwarfs with spectral types between M5.0 and M9.0, and we also search for debris disks around three of them. Based on theoretical models, we used the color $I-J$, the $J$-band absolute magnitude and the detection of the Li I 6708 $Å$ doublet line as a strong constraint to…
The past two decades have seen dramatic progress in our knowledge of the population of young stars of age <200 Myr that lie within 150 pc of the Sun. These nearby, young stars, most of which are found in loose, comoving groups, provide the opportunity to explore (among many other things) the dissolution of stellar clusters and their diffusion into the field star population. In the age of Gaia, this potential can now be fully exploited. We have identified, and are now investigating, a sample of nearly 400 Galex UV-selected late-type (K and early-M) field stars with Gaia-based distances <120 pc …
In the last decade many kinematic groups of young stars (<100 Myr) were discovered in the solar neighbourhood. Since the most interesting period of planet formation overlaps with the age of these groups, their well dated members are attractive targets for exoplanet searches by direct imaging. We combined astrometric, photometric and X-ray data, and applied strict selection criteria to explore the stellar content of five nearby moving groups. We identified more than 100 potential new candidate members in the ß Pic moving group, and in the Tucana-Horologium, Columba, Carina, and Argus associatio…
Lee & Song (2018, Paper 1) developed a tool for calculating Bayesian membership probability for nearby young stellar moving groups (BAMG: Bayesian Analysis of Moving Groups). The study presented the importance of careful construction of models in moving group membership assessment, using $β$ Pictoris moving group as a test case. In this study, we build models for all major nearby young stellar moving groups (NYMGs hereafter) through 4 stages. A set of prototype models is created using members listed in the discovery paper of each group. For each group, suggested members after the discovery of …
We present new radial velocity (RV) measurements for 11 candidate young very-low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, with spectral types from M7 to L7. Candidate young objects were identified by features indicative of low surface gravity in their optical and/or near-infrared spectra. RV measurements are derived from high resolution (R=$λ$/$Δλ$=20,000) $J$ band spectra taken with NIRSPEC at the Keck Observatory. We combine RVs with proper motions and trigonometric distances to calculate three-dimensional space positions and motions and to evaluate membership probabilities for nearby young moving group…
We present a kinematically-unbiased search to identify young, nearby low-mass members of kinematic moving groups (MGs). Objects with both rotation periods shorter than 5 days in the SuperWASP All-Sky Survey and X-ray counterparts in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey were chosen to create a catalog of several thousand rapidly-rotating, X-ray active FGK stars. These objects are expected to be either young single stars or tidally-locked spectroscopic binaries. We obtained optical spectra for a sub-sample of 146 stars to determine their ages and kinematics, and in some cases repeat radial velocity (RV) mea…
Our knowledge of the population of young (age <=750 Myr) stars that lie within ~120 pc of the Sun is rapidly accelerating. The vast majority of these nearby, young stars can be placed in kinematically coherent groups (nearby, young moving groups; NYMGs). NYMGs and their member stars afford unmatched opportunities to explore a wide variety of aspects of the early evolution of stars and exoplanet systems, including stellar initial mass functions and age determination methods; the magnetic activities and high-energy radiation environments of young, late-type stars; the dynamics of young binary an…
With all the new discoveries being made about nearby young stars, the ability to find new nearby young stars is as important as ever, and membership identification codes will continue to perform a vital role in scientific research. In the process of creating a new moving group membership identification code - LocAting Constituent mEmbers In Nearby Groups (LACEwING) - we have discovered a few pointers relevant to astronomers trying to use codes like LACEwING to locate young stars.
The purpose of this study is the identification of young ($1< age < 100$ Myr), nearby ($d \leqslant100$ pc) moving groups (YNMGs) through their kinematic signature. YNMGs could be the result of the recent dispersal of young embedded clusters, such that they still represent kinematically cold groups, carrying the residual motion of their parental cloud. Using the fact that a large number ($\sim$ 14000) of the RAVE sources with evidence of chromospheric activity, also present signatures of stellar youth, we selected a sample of solar type sources with the highest probability of chromospheric act…
Runaway stars are characterised by their remarkably high space velocities, and the study of their formation mechanisms has attracted considerable interest. Young, nearby runaway stars are the most favorable for identifying their place of origin, and for searching for possible associated objects such as neutron stars. Usually the research field of runaway stars focuses on O- and B-type stars, because these objects are better detectable at larger distances than late-type stars. Early-type runaway stars have the advantage, that they evolve faster and can therefore better be confirmed to be young.…
We present Bayesian Analysis for Nearby Young AssociatioNs II (BANYAN II), a modified Bayesian analysis for assessing the membership of later-than-M5 objects to any of several Nearby Young Associations (NYAs). In addition to using kinematic information (from sky position and proper motion), this analysis exploits 2MASS-WISE color-magnitude diagrams in which old and young objects follow distinct sequences. As an improvement over our earlier work, the spatial and kinematic distributions for each association are now modelled as ellipsoids whose axes need not be aligned with the Galactic coordinat…
X-ray surveys are well suited to detect, identify and study young stars based on their high levels of magnetic activity and thus X-ray brightness. The eROSITA instrument onboard the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) satellite will perform an X-ray all-sky survey that surpasses existing data by a sensitivity increase of more than an order of magnitude. The 4 yr survey is expected to detect more than half a million stars and stellar systems in X-rays.
We present parallax and proper motion measurements, near-infrared spectra, and WISE photometry for the low surface gravity L5gamma dwarf 2MASSJ035523.37+113343.7 (2M0355). We use these data to evaluate photometric, spectral, and kinematic signatures of youth as 2M0355 is the reddest isolated L dwarf yet classified. We confirm its low-gravity spectral morphology and find a strong resemblance to the sharp triangular shaped $H$-band spectrum of the 10 Myr planetary-mass object 2M1207b. We find that 2M0355 is underluminous compared to a normal field L5 dwarf in the optical and MKO J,H, and K bands…
Young, low-mass stars in the solar neighborhood are vital for completing the mass function for nearby, young coeval groups, establishing a more complete census for evolutionary studies, and providing targets for direct-imaging exoplanet and/or disk studies. We present properties derived from high-resolution optical spectra for 336 candidate young nearby, low-mass stars. These include measurements of radial velocities and age diagnostics such as H$α$ and Li $λ$6707 equivalent widths. Combining our radial velocities with astrometry from Gaia DR2, we provide full 3D kinematics for the entire samp…
We report on the discovery of the young, nearby, brown dwarf 2MASS J0041353$-$562112. The object has a spectral type of M7.5, it shows Li absorption and signatures of accretion, which implies that it still has a disk and suggests an age below 10 Myr. The space motion vector and position on the sky indicate that the brown dwarf is probably a member of the $\sim$20 Myr old Tuc-Hor association, or that it may be an ejected member of the $\sim$12 Myr old $β$ Pic association, both would imply that 2MASS J0041353$-$562112 may in fact be older than 10 Myr. No accreting star or brown dwarf was previou…
We report an in-depth study of the F8-type star HD 166191, identified in an ongoing survey for stars exhibiting infrared emission above their expected photospheres in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer all-sky catalog. The fractional IR luminosity measured from 3.5 to 70 $μ$m is exceptionally high (L$_{IR}$/L$_{bol}$ $\sim$10%). Near-diffraction limited imaging observations with the T-ReCS Si filter set on the Gemini South telescope and adaptive optics imaging with the NIRC2 Lp filter on the Keck II telescope confirmed that the excess emission coincides with the star. Si-band images show …
Absolute ages of young stars are important for many issues in pre-main sequence stellar and circumstellar evolution but are long recognized as difficult to derive and calibrate. In this paper, we use literature spectral types and photometry to construct empirical isochrones in HR diagrams for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the eta Cha, epsilon Cha, and TW Hya Associations and the beta Pic and Tuc-Hor Moving Groups. A successful theory of pre-main sequence evolution should match the shapes of the stellar loci for these groups of young stars. However, when comparing the combined empirical is…
Many members of nearby young moving groups exhibit infrared excess attributed to circumstellar debris dust, formed via erosion of planetesimals. With their proximity and well-dated ages, these groups are excellent laboratories for studying the early evolution of debris dust and of planetesimal belts. ALMA can spatially resolve the disk emission, revealing the location and extent of these belts, putting constraints on planetesimal evolution models, and allowing us to study planet-disk interactions. While the main trends of dust evolution in debris disks are well-known, there is almost no inform…
We present a new method based on a Bayesian analysis to identify new members of nearby young kinematic groups. The analysis minimally takes into account the position, proper motion, magnitude and color of a star, but other observables can be readily added (e.g. radial velocity, distance). We use this method to find new young low-mass stars in the βPictoris (βPMG) and AB Doradus (ABDMG) moving groups and in the TW Hydrae (TWA), Tucana-Horologium (THA), Columba, Carina and Argus associations. Starting from a sample of 758 mid-KM (K5V-M5V) stars showing youth indicators such as Hα and X-ray emiss…
We report the discovery and characterization of a power law correlation between the local surface densities of Spitzer-identified, dusty young stellar objects and the column density of gas (as traced by near-IR extinction) in eight molecular clouds within 1 kpc and with 100 or more known YSOs. This correlation, which appears in data smoothed over size scales of ~1 pc, varies in quality from cloud to cloud; those clouds with tight correlations, MonR2 and Ophiuchus, are fit with power laws of slope 2.67 and 1.87, respectively. The spread in the correlation is attributed primarily to local gas di…
SONYC -- Substellar Objects in Nearby Young Clusters -- is a program to investigate the frequency and properties of young substellar objects with masses down to a few times that of Jupiter. Here we present a census of very low mass objects in the ~1 Myr old cluster NGC1333. We analyze near-infrared spectra taken with FMOS/Subaru for 100 candidates from our deep, wide-field survey and find 10 new likely brown dwarfs with spectral types of M6 or later. Among them, there are three with >~M9 and one with early L spectral type, corresponding to masses of 0.006 to <~0.02 Msol, so far the lowest mass…
We present a parallax solution for WISE J135501.90-825838.9, a spectral binary with spectral types L7+T7.5 and candidate AB Doradus member. Using $WISE$ astrometry, we obtain a distance of $d = 16.7\pm5.3$ pc. This preliminary parallax solution provides further evidence that WISE J135501.90-825838.9 is a member of AB Doradus (130-200 Myr), and when combined with evolutionary models predicts masses of 11 $M_\mathrm{Jup}$ and 9 $M_\mathrm{Jup}$ for both components.
I present the first substantial work to measure the fraction of debris disks for M-dwarfs in nearby moving groups (MGs). Utilising the $AllWISE$ IR catalog, 17 out of 151 MG members are found with an IR photometric excess indicative of disk structure. The M-dwarf debris disk fraction is $\lesssim 6$ per cent in MGs younger than 40\,Myr, and none are found in the groups older than 40\,Myr. Simulations show, however, that debris disks around M-dwarfs are not present above a $WISE$ $W1-W4$ colour of $\sim 2.5$, making calculating the absolute disk fractions difficult. The debris disk dissipation …
We present basic observational data and association membership analysis for 45 young and active low-mass stellar systems from the ongoing RECONS photometry and astrometry program at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. Most of these systems have saturated X-ray emission (log(Lx/Lbol) > -3.5) based on X-ray fluxes from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, and many are significantly more luminous than main-sequence stars of comparable color. We present parallaxes and proper motions, Johnson-Kron-Cousins VRI photometry, and multiplicity observations from the CTIOPI program on the CTIO 0.9m telescope…
Young nearby stars are good candidates in the search for planets with both radial velocity (RV) and direct imaging techniques. This, in turn, allows for the computation of the giant planet occurrence rates at all separations. The RV search around young stars is a challenge as they are generally faster rotators than older stars of similar spectral types and they exhibit signatures of magnetic activity (spots) or pulsation in their RV time series. Specific analyses are necessary to characterize, and possibly correct for, this activity. Our aim is to search for planets around young nearby stars a…
The origin of the lowest mass free-floating objects -- brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects -- is one of the major unsolved problems in star formation. Establishing a census of young substellar objects is a fundamental prerequisite for distinguishing between competing theoretical scenarios. Such a census allows us to probe the initial mass function (IMF), binary statistics, and properties of accretion disks. Our SONYC (Substellar Objects in Nearby Young Clusters) survey relies on extremely deep wide-field optical and near-infrared imaging, with follow-up spectroscopy, in combination with Sp…
Young nearby runaway stars are suitable to search for their place of origin and possibly associated objects, for example neutron stars. Tetzlaff, Neuhäuser & Hohle (2011) selected young ($\le 50$ Myr) runaway star candidates from Hipparcos, for which they had estimated the ages from the location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and evolutionary models. Here, we redetermine or constrain their young ages more precisely not only by using the new Gaia DR2 data, but also by measuring lithium, which is a youth indicator. For 308 stars, we took spectra to search for the strong resonance doublet of …
A total of 28 young nearby stars (ages $\leq 60$,Myr) have been observed in the K$_{\rm s}$-band with the adaptive optics imager Naos-Conica of the Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. Among the targets are ten visual binaries and one triple system at distances between 10 and 130 pc, all previously known. During a first observing epoch a total of 20 faint stellar or sub-stellar companion-candidates were detected around seven of the targets. These fields, as well as most of the stellar binaries, were re-observed with the same instrument during a second epoch, about one year…
Based on high resolution optical spectra obtained with ESPaDOnS at CFHT, we determine fundamental parameters (\Teff, R, \Lbol, \logg\ and metallicity) for 59 candidate members of nearby young kinematic groups. The candidates were identified through the BANYAN Bayesian inference method of \citet{2013malo}, which takes into account the position, proper motion, magnitude, color, radial velocity and parallax (when available) to establish a membership probability. The derived parameters are compared to Dartmouth Magnetic evolutionary models and to field stars with the goal to constrain the age of o…
SONYC -- Substellar Objects in Nearby Young Clusters -- is a survey program to investigate the frequency and properties of substellar objects with masses down to a few times that of Jupiter in nearby star-forming regions. Here we present the first results from SONYC observations of NGC1333, a ~1Myr old cluster in the Perseus star-forming complex. We have carried out extremely deep optical and near-infrared imaging in four bands (i', z', J, K) using Suprime-Cam and MOIRCS instruments at the Subaru telescope. The survey covers 0.25sqdeg and reaches completeness limits of 24.7mag in the i'-band a…
[Abbreviated] We present the results of a near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic follow-up survey of 182 M4-L7 low-mass stars and brown dwarfs (BDs) from the BANYAN All-Sky Survey (BASS) for candidate members of nearby, young moving groups (YMGs). We confirm signs of low-gravity for 42 new BD discoveries with estimated masses between 8-75 $M_{Jup}$ and identify previously unrecognized signs of low gravity for 24 known BDs. This allows us to refine the fraction of low-gravity dwarfs in the high-probability BASS sample to $\sim$82%. We use this unique sample of 66 young BDs, supplemented with 22 youn…
Gaia EDR3 offers greatly improved kinematics for nearby objects, including members of nearby young stellar moving groups (NYMGs). In this study, we aim to identify low-mass NYMG members (spectral types of M0 to mid-L) in Gaia EDR3. We calculated spatio-kinematic membership probabilities utilising a Bayesian membership probability calculation scheme developed in our previous study. We evaluated stellar youth primarily based on colour-magnitude diagram positions. Combining spatio-kinematic membership assessment and youth evaluation, we identified ~2900 low-mass NYMG candidate members including ~…
We present stellar parameters and abundances of 11 elements (Li, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn) of 13 F6-K2 main-sequence stars in the young groups AB Doradus, Carina Near, and Ursa Major. The exoplanet-host star ιHorologii is also analysed. The three young associations have lithium abundance consistent with their age. All other elements show solar abundances. The three groups are characterised by a small scatter in all abundances, with mean [Fe/H] values of 0.10 (σ=0.03), 0.08 (σ=0.05), and 0.01 (σ=0.03) dex for AB Doradus, Carina Near, and Ursa Major, respectively. The distribut…
We present a self-consistent, absolute isochronal age scale for young (< 200 Myr), nearby (< 100 pc) moving groups, which is consistent with recent lithium depletion boundary ages for both the Beta Pic and Tucana-Horologium moving groups. This age scale was derived using a set of semi-empirical pre-main-sequence model isochrones that incorporate an empirical colour-Teff relation and bolometric corrections based on the observed colours of Pleiades members, with theoretical corrections for the dependence on log g. Absolute ages for young, nearby groups are vital as these regions play a crucial r…
We try to constrain the nuclear Equation-of-State (EoS) and supernova ejecta models by observations of young neutron stars in our galactic neighbourhood. There are seven thermally emitting isolated neutron stars known from X-ray and optical observations, the so-called Magnificent Seven, which are young (few Myrs), nearby (few hundred pc), and radio-quiet with blackbody-like X-ray spectra, so that - by observing their surface - we can determine their luminosity, distance, and temperature, hence, their radius. We also see the possibility to determine their current neutron star masses and the mas…
We analyze the membership probability of young stars belonging to nearby moving groups with $\textit{Gaia}$ DR2 data. The sample of 1429 stars were identified from 'The Catalog of Suspected Nearby Young Moving Group Stars'. Good-quality parallax and proper motion values were retrieved for 890 stars from $\textit{Gaia}$ DR2 database. The analysis for membership probability is performed in the framework of LACEwING algorithm. From the analysis it is confirmed that 279 stars do not belong to any of the known moving groups. We estimated the $\textit{ U, V, W}$ space velocity values for 250 moving …
Within the SONYC - Substellar Objects in Nearby Young Clusters - survey, we investigate the frequency of free-floating planetary-mass objects (planemos) in the young cluster NGC1333. Building upon our extensive previous work, we present spectra for 12 of the faintest candidates from our deep multi-band imaging, plus seven random objects in the same fields, using MOIRCS on Subaru. We confirm seven new sources as young very low mass objects (VLMOs), with Teff of 2400-3100K and mid-M to early-L spectral types. These objects add to the growing census of VLMOs in NGC1333, now totaling 58. Three con…
Recently, several studies have shown that young, open clusters are characterised by a considerable over-abundance in their barium content. In particular, D'Orazi et al. (2009) reported that in some younger clusters [Ba/Fe] can reach values as high as ~0.6 dex. The work also identified the presence of an anti-correlation between [Ba/Fe] and cluster age. For clusters in the age range ~4.5 Gyr-500 Myr, this is best explained by assuming a higher contribution from low-mass asymptotic giant branch stars to the Galactic chemical enrichment. The purpose of this work is to investigate the ubiquity of …
