We examine and point out the importance of a regime of dark matter production through the freeze-in mechanism that results from a large thermal correction to a decaying mediator particle mass from hot plasma in the early Universe. We show that mediator decays to dark matter that are kinematically forbidden at the usually considered ranges of low temperatures can be generically present at higher temperatures and actually dominate the overall dark matter production, thus leading to very distinct solutions from the standard case. We illustrate these features by considering a dark Higgs portal model where dark matter is produced via decays of a scalar field with a large thermal mass. We identify the resulting ranges of parameters that are consistent with the correct dark matter relic abundance and further apply current and expected future collider, cosmological, and astrophysical limits.
In this review, we focus on dark matter production from thermal freeze-out with forbidden channels and SIMP processes. We show that forbidden channels can be dominant to produce dark matter depending on the dark photon and / or dark Higgs mass compared to SIMP.
We study the importance of a frozen-in dark matter production regime, where the dark matter particle is produced via kinematically forbidden decays that arise from significant thermal correction to the mass a mediator particle in the plasma.
We examine a scenario for freeze-in production of dark matter, which occurs due to the large thermal correction to the mass of a decaying mediator particle present in the thermal bath of the early Universe. We show that the decays, which are kinematically forbidden otherwise, can open up at very high temperatures and dominate the dark matter production. We explore such forbidden production of dark matter in the minimal $U(1)_{B-L}$ model, comparing dark matter phenomenology in the context of forbidden frozen-in with the standard picture.
We present kinematically forbidden dark matter annihilations into Standard Model leptons. This mechanism precisely selects the dark matter mass that gives the observed relic abundance. This is qualitatively different from existing models of thermal dark matter, where fixing the relic density typically leaves open orders of magnitude of viable dark matter masses. Forbidden annihilations require the dark matter to be close in mass to the particles that dominate its annihilation rate. We show examples where the dark matter mass is close to the muon mass, the tau mass, or the average of the tau an…
At the tail of its velocity distribution, cold dark matter (DM) can annihilate at finite temperature to states heavier than itself. We explore the possibility that DM freezeout is dictated by these "forbidden annihilations" at the electroweak scale. Demanding that annihilation products be Standard Model particles, we find that for the forbidden mechanism to primarily set the DM relic abundance, DM must couple predominantly, if not solely, to top quarks. This can be arranged by invoking a non-trivial flavor structure such as Minimal Flavor Violation. We avail two avenues to achieve the correct …
The thermal relic density of dark matter is conventionally set by two-body annihilations. We point out that in many simple models, $3 \to 2$ annihilations can play an important role in determining the relic density over a broad range of model parameters. This occurs when the two-body annihilation is kinematically forbidden, but the $3\to 2$ process is allowed; we call this scenario "Not-Forbidden Dark Matter". We illustrate this mechanism for a vector portal dark matter model, showing that for a dark matter mass of $m_χ\sim \text{MeV - 10 GeV}$, $3 \to 2$ processes not only lead to the observe…
As experimental searches for WIMP dark matter continue to yield null results, models beyond the WIMP paradigm have proliferated in order to elude ever improving observational constraints, among them that of sub-GeV dark matter mediated by a massive vector portal (a dark photon) associated with a new dark $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. It has been previously noted that for a significant range of the parameter space of this class of models, the annihilation of dark matter particles into a pair of dark photons can dominate the freeze-out process even when this process is kinematically forbidden for dark …
We consider a model of two-component dark matter based on a hidden $U(1)_D$ symmetry, in which relic densities of the dark matter are determined by forbidden channels and thermal freeze-out. The hidden $U(1)_D$ symmetry is spontaneously broken to a residual $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry, and the lightest $\mathbb{Z}_4$ charged particle can be a dark matter candidate. Moreover, depending on the mass hierarchy in the dark sector, we have two-component dark matter. We show that the relic density of the lighter dark matter component can be determined by forbidden annihilation channels which require larg…
We perform a detailed study of dark matter production via freeze-in under the assumption that some fluid dominates the early Universe before depositing its energy to the plasma causing entropy injection. As a dark matter candidate we consider a fermionic singlet that is produced through its interactions with a scalar particle in the thermal plasma. The fluid alters the expansion rate of the Universe, as well as the scaling of the temperature, which significantly affects the evolution of both the number density and the mean momentum of the dark matter particle. We identify and discuss in detail…
We present a model in which the dark matter particle is frozen-in at MeV scale. In this model, the mediator between the standard model sector and the dark sector can automatically provide a self-interaction for dark matter. The interaction strength is naturally to be the in the region in favor of the cluster mass deficit anomaly. Due to the self-scattering, the Lyman-$α$ constraint can be relaxed to $m_D \gtrsim 2 $ keV. In this region the self-interaction and the Fermi pressure both play roles on forming a dark matter core at the center of the dwarf galaxies.
In this paper we study the effect of electroweak sphaleron transition or electroweak phase transition (EWPT) in balancing baryon excess to the excess stable quarks of $4^{th}$ generation. Considering the conservation of all quantum number and charges, sphaleron transition between between baryons, leptons and $4^{th}$ family of leptons and quarks is possible. We have tried to established a possible definite relationship between the value and sign of the $4^{th}$ family excess relative to baryon asymmetry under the framework of second order EWPT. In passing by we show the small, yet negligible d…

Kinematically forbidden channels can set the freeze-out dark matter (DM) relic abundance. These channels are described by DM annihilations into heavier states, which vanish at zero temperature limit, but occur at finite temperatures in the early Universe. For the case that the final state of the forbidden channel is scalar mediators that couple to Standard Model (SM) matter through mixing with the SM Higgs, the signals from DM-nucleon interactions and from mediator-related missing energy or displaced vertices could be detected by direct detections and particle physics experiments, respectively…
We study observational consequences arising from dark matter (DM) of non-thermal origin, produced by dark freeze-out from a hidden sector heat bath. We assume this heat bath was populated by feebly-coupled mediator particles, produced via a Higgs portal interaction with the Standard Model (SM). The dark sector then attained internal equilibrium with a characteristic temperature different from the SM photon temperature. We find that even if the coupling between the DM and the SM sectors is very weak, the scenario allows for indirect observational signals. We show how the expected strength of th…
A reheating phase in the early universe is an essential part of all inflationary models during which not only the Standard Model (SM) quanta are produced but it can also shed light on the production of dark matter. In this work, we explore a class of reheating models where the reheating is induced by a cubic interaction of the inflaton $ϕ$ to the SM Higgs boson ${\textbf h}$ of the form $g_{hϕ} M_{\rm Pl} ϕ|{\textbf h}|^2$ adopting the $α$-attractor T-model of inflation. Assuming inflaton as a background field such interaction implies a $ϕ$-dependent mass term of the Higgs boson and a non-triv…
Dark Matter (DM) density is reduced if entropy production takes place after DM particles abundance is frozen out in the early universe. We study a possibility of such reduction due to entropy production in the electroweak phase transition (EWPT). We compare scenarios of entropy production in the standard model (SM) and its simplest extension, the two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM). Assuming the EWPT is of second order in the SM scenario and the first order in the 2HDM, we calculate the entropy release in these scenarios and the corresponding dilution of preexisting DM density in the early universe…
In this paper we consider loop corrections to the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section in bottom-quark flavored scalar-type dark matter models. We focus on two scenarios: (a) a complex scalar dark matter with a scalar particle as the mediator; and (b) a real scalar dark matter with a vector boson as the mediator. In both scenarios, the direct detection cross sections are either spin-dependent or kinematically forbidden at the tree-level. Corrections induced by the WIMP-gluon effective operator, scalar-type WIMP-quark effective operator, and the twist-2 effective operator are …
We study the generation of small neutrino masses from the dimension six effective operator at tree level and one-loop level, the neutrinos are assumed to be Dirac particles. We find out all possible tree and one-loop diagrams which lead to finite neutrino masses. The relevant mediator fields and the predictions for neutrino masses are presented. The lower order contributions to neutrino masses can be forbidden by introducing soft breaking abelian symmetry or finite non-abelian symmetry. The messengers inside the loop can be dark matter particles. The possible dark matter candidates and the cor…
In this paper we investigate light dark matter scenarios where annihilation to Standard Model particles at tree-level is kinematically forbidden. In such cases annihilation can be aided by massive Standard Model-like species, called {\it assisters}, in the initial state that enhances the available phase space opening up novel tree-level processes. We investigate the feasibility of such non-standard {\it assisted annihilation} processes to reproduce the observed relic density of dark matter. We present a simple scalar dark matter - scalar assister model where this is realised. We find that if t…
Sub-GeV thermal relic dark matter typically requires the existence of a light mediator particle. We introduce the light two-Higgs-doublet portal, illustrated by a minimal UV-complete model for sub-GeV dark matter with kinematically forbidden annihilations into leptons. All new physics states in this scenario lie at or below the electroweak scale, affecting Higgs physics, the muon anomalous magnetic moment and potentially neutrino masses. Observation of radiative dark matter annihilation by future MeV gamma-ray telescopes would be key to unambiguously identify the scenario.
We consider dark matter models in which the mass splitting between the dark matter particles and their annihilation products is tiny. Compared to the previously proposed Forbidden Dark Matter scenario, the mass splittings we consider are much smaller, and are allowed to be either positive or negative. To emphasize this modification, we dub our scenario "Impeded Dark Matter". We demonstrate that Impeded Dark Matter can be easily realized without requiring tuning of model parameters. For negative mass splitting, we demonstrate that the annihilation cross-section for Impeded Dark Matter depends l…
Dark matter with strong self-interactions provides a compelling solution to several small-scale structure puzzles. Under the assumption that the coupling between dark matter and the Standard Model particles is suppressed, such strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs) allow for a successful thermal freeze-out through N-to-N' processes, where N dark matter particles annihilate to N' of them. In the most common scenarios, where dark matter stability is guaranteed by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, the seemingly leading annihilating channel, i.e. 3-to-2 process, is forbidden, so the 4-to-2 one do…
We investigate the possibility of unifying the inflation and dark matter physics in the minimal model for a complex scalar dark matter with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry. The dark local $U(1)$ symmetry is broken spontaneously into the $Z_3$ symmetry by the dark Higgs mechanism. As compared to dark matter models with $Z_2$ parity, the dark matter cubic self-interaction restricts the inflation with non-minimal couplings to take place beyond the pure dark matter direction and plays an important role in the loop corrections for the inflationary predictions as well as determining the correct dark matter re…
The spectral shape of the electrons from the two first-forbidden unique beta- decays of Ar-39 and Ar-42 were calculated for the first time to the next-to-leading order. Especially the spectral shape of the Ar-39 decay can be used to characterise this background component for dark matter searches based on argon. Alternatively, due to the low thresholds of these experiments, the spectral shape can be investigated over a wide energy range with high statistics and thus allow a sensitive comparison with the theoretical predictions. This might lead to interesting results for the ratio of the weak ve…
Choosing how gauge $U(1)_χ$ breaks in the context of $SO(10) \to SU(5) \times U(1)_χ$, $Z_4$ lepton number may be obtained which maintains neutrinos as Dirac fermions. Choosing $Δ(27)$ as the family symmetry of leptons, tree-level Dirac neutrino masses may be forbidden. Choosing a specific set of self-interacting dark-matter particles, Dirac neutrino masses and mixing may then be generated in two loops. This framework allows the realization of cobimaximal neutrino mixing, i.e. $θ_{13} \neq 0$, $θ_{23} = π/4$, $δ_{CP} = \pm π/2$, as well as the desirable feature that the light scalar mediator o…
We investigate observable cosmological aspects of sterile neutrino dark matter produced via the freeze-in mechanism. The study is performed in a framework that admits many cosmologically interesting variations: high temperature production via annihilation processes from higher dimensional operators or low temperature production from decays of a scalar, with the decaying scalar in or out of equilibrium with the thermal bath, in supersymmetric or non-supersymmetric setups, thus allowing us to both extract generic properties and highlight features unique to particular variations. We find that whi…
We consider a novel scenario for Vector Strongly Interacting Massive Particle (VSIMP) dark matter with local $SU(2)_X\times U(1)_{Z'}$ symmetry in the dark sector. Similarly to the Standard Model, after the dark symmetry is broken spontaneously by the VEVs of dark Higgs fields, the approximate custodial symmetry determines comparable but split masses for $SU(2)_X$ gauge bosons. In this model, we show that $U(1)_{Z'}$-charged gauge boson of $SU(2)_X$ ($X_\pm$) becomes a natural candidate for SIMP dark matter, annihilating through $3\rightarrow 2$ or forbidden $2\rightarrow 2$ annihilations due …
We study a light thermal scalar dark matter (DM) model with a light scalar mediator mixed with the standard model Higgs boson, including both the theoretical bounds and the current experimental constraints. The thermal scalar DM with the mass below a few GeV is usually strongly constrained by the observation of CMB and/or indirect detection experiments because the leading annihilation mode is S-wave. However, we find that two parameter regions still remain, which are the resonant annihilation region and the forbidden annihilation region. For the both cases, higher partial waves dominantly cont…
Although it is usually thought that a class of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matters (DMs), which have the vector coupling with the $Z$ boson, is denied by null results of the direct DM searches, such WIMP DMs are still viable if they are superheavy with the mass of $m_{DM} \gtrsim 10^9$ GeV. In the future, the superheavy WIMP DMs can be searched up to $m_{DM} \simeq 10^{12}$ GeV, which corresponds to the so-called neutrino floor limit. We show that the observed abundance of $Ω_\mathrm{DM}h^2 \simeq 0.1$ for a superheavy WIMP DM can be reproduced by a suitable reheating tempe…
Within a multicomponent dark matter scenario, novel gamma-ray signals may arise from the decay of the heavier dark matter component into the lighter. For a scalar dark sector of this kind, the decay $ϕ_2\rightarrowϕ_1 γ$ is forbidden by the conservation of angular momentum, but the decay $ϕ_2 \rightarrow ϕ_1 γγ$ can have a sizable or even dominant branching ratio. In this paper we present a detailed study of this decay channel. We determine the width and photon energy spectrum generated in the decay, employing an effective theory approach, and in UV complete models where the scalar dark matter…
In an earlier work, we showed that in very simple neutrino portal-like extensions of the Standard Model it is possible to achieve a one-to-one correspondence between dark matter physics and the seesaw parameters controlling the genesis of neutrino masses. Notably, this can occur both when the dark matter is produced via freeze-in and relativistic freeze-out. In this article, we carry out a detailed phenomenological study of such scenarios. Specifically, we find the allowed regions for the neutrino portal coupling within which the correspondence is valid. We further constrain the parameter spac…
We investigate a scenario where the dark matter of the Universe is made from very light hidden photons transforming under a $Z_{2}$-symmetry. In contrast to the usual situation, kinetic mixing is forbidden by the symmetry and the dark photon interacts with the Standard Model photon only via an axion-like particle acting as a "messenger". Focusing on signatures involving the ordinary photon, our survey of the phenomenology includes limits from cosmological stability, CMB distortions, astrophysical energy loss, light-shining-through-walls experiments, helioscopes and solar X-ray observations.
We consider thermal production mechanisms of self-interacting dark matter in models with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry. A complex scalar dark matter is stabilized by the $Z_3$, that is the remnant of a local dark $U(1)_d$. Light dark matter with large self-interaction can be produced from thermal freeze-out in the presence of SM-annihilation, SIMP and/or forbidden channels. We show that dark photon and/or dark Higgs should be relatively light for unitarity and then assist the thermal freeze-out. We identify the constraints on the parameter space of dark matter self-interaction and mass in cases that o…
New confining sectors can contain a set of pseudo-Goldstone mesons that exhibit a complicated structure in terms of stability and relative masses. Stable ones can act as dark matter candidates, while their interactions with the unstable ones determine their relic abundances. The overall structure, by specifying which channels are kinematically forbidden or not, affects the cosmology, constraints and collider phenomenology. In this paper, we present a classification of these pseudo-Goldstone meson structures. We find that the structures can be classified into three categories, corresponding to …
