We propose in this letter a relativistic coordinate independent interpretation for Milgrom's acceleration $a_{0}=1.2 \times 10^{-8} \hbox{cm/s}^{2}$ through a geometric constraint obtained from the product of the Kretschmann invariant scalar times the surface area of 2--spheres defined through suitable characteristic length scales for local and cosmic regimes, described by Schwarzschild and Friedman--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker (FLRW) geometries, respectively. By demanding consistency between these regimes we obtain an appealing expression for the empirical (so far unexplained) relation between the accelerations $a_0$ and $c H_0$.
Imposing this covariant geometric criterion upon a FLRW model, yields a dynamical equation for the Hubble scalar whose solution matches, to a very high accuracy, the cosmic expansion rate of the $Λ$CDM concordance model fit for cosmic times close to the present epoch. We believe that this geometric interpretation of $a_0$ could provide relevant information for a deeper understanding of gravity
We consider spatially homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) solutions of Milgrom's recently proposed class of bimetric theories of gravity. These theories have two different regimes, corresponding to high and low acceleration. We find simple power-law matter dominated solutions in both, as well as solutions with spatial curvature, and exponentially expanding solutions. In the high acceleration limit these solutions behave like the FRW solutions of General Relativity, with a cosmological constant term that is of the correct order of magnitude to explain the observed acceler…
An exact solution of Einstein's field equations for a static spherically symmetric medium with a radially boost invariant energy-momentum tensor is presented. In the limit of an equation of state corresponding to a distribution of radially directed strings there is a $1/r$ correction to Newton's force law. At large distances and small accelerations this law coincides with the phenomenological force law invented by Milgrom in order to explain the flat rotation curves of galaxies without introducing dark matter. The present model explaines why the critical acceleration of Milgrom is of the same …
A scalar field model for explaining the anomalous acceleration and light deflection at galactic and cluster scales, without further dark matter, is presented. It is formulated in a scale covariant scalar tensor theory of gravity in the framework of integrable Weyl geometry and presupposes two different phases for the scalar field, like the superfluid approach of Berezhiani/Khoury. In low acceleration regimes of static gravitational fields (in the Einstein frame) with accordingly low values of the scalar field gradient, the scalar field Lagrangian combines a cubic kinetic term similar to the ``…
An exact solution of Einstein's field equations for a point mass surrounded by a static, spherically symmetric fluid of strings is presented. The solution is singular at the origin. Near the string cloud limit there is a $1/r$ correction to Newton's force law. It is noted that at large distances and small accelerations, this law coincides with the phenomenological force law invented by Milgrom in order to explain the flat rotation curves of galaxies without introducing dark matter. When interpreted in the context of a cosmological model with a string fluid, the new solution naturally explains …
In the scalar tensor gravitational theories Newton's constant G_N evolves in the expanding universe. Likewise, it has been speculated that the acceleration scale a_0 in Milgrom's modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) is tied to the scale of the cosmos, and must thus evolve. With the advent of relativistic implementations of the modified dynamics, one can address the issue of variability of the two gravitational ''constants'' with some confidence. Using TeVeS, the Tensor-Vector-Scalar gravitational theory, as an implementation of MOND, we calculate the dependence of G_N and a_0 on the TeVeS parame…
Introducing a fundamental constant of nature with dimensions of acceleration into the theory of gravity makes it possible to extend gravity in a very consistent manner. At the non-relativistic level a MOND-like theory with a modification in the force sector is obtained, which is the limit of a very general metric relativistic theory of gravity. Since the mass and length scales involved in the dynamics of the whole universe require small accelerations of the order of Milgrom's acceleration constant a_0, it turns out that the relativistic theory of gravity can be used to explain the expansion of…
In this paper a Weyl geometric scalar tensor theory of gravity with scalar field $Φ$ and scale invariant cubic ("aquadratic") kinetic Lagrangian is introduced. Einstein gauge (comparable to Einstein frame in Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory) is most natural for studying trajectories. In it, the Weylian scale connection induces an additional acceleration which in the weak field, static, low velocity limit acquires the deep MOND form of Milgrom/Bekenstein's gravity. The energy momentum of $Φ$ leads to another add on to Newton acceleration. Both additional accelerations together imply a MOND-ian phenome…
MOND dynamics consists of a modification of the acceleration with respect to the one provided by Newtonian mechanics. In this paper we investigate whether it can be derived from a velocity-dependent deformation of the coordinates of the systems. The conclusion is that it cannot be derived this way because of the intrinsic non-local character in time of the MOND procedure. This is a feature pointed out some time ago already by Milgrom himself.
We explore the possibility that Milgrom's Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) is a manifestation of the modification of inertia at small accelerations. Consistent with the Tully-Fisher relation, dynamics in the small acceleration domain may originate from a quartic (cubic) velocity-dependence of energy (momentum) whereas gravitational potentials remain linear with respect to mass. The natural framework for this interpretation is Finsler geometry. The simplest static isotropic Finsler metric of a gravitating mass that incorporates the Tully-Fisher relation at small acceleration is associated wit…
Explaining the late time acceleration is one of the most challenging tasks for theoretical physicists today. Infra-red modification of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR) is a possible route to model late time acceleration. In this regard, vector-tensor theory as a part of gravitational interactions on large cosmological scales, has been proposed recently. This involves generalization of massive Proca lagrangian in curved space time. Black hole solutions in such theories have also been constructed. In this paper, we study different astrophysical signatures of such black holes. We firs…
Accelerating black holes, connected to cosmic strings could evolve to supermassive black holes. However, if they are going to take part in structure formation and resides at the center of galaxies, their acceleration should be small. This slow acceleration does not change the shadow or image position in gravitational lensing effect significantly. However we show that the time delay associated to these images change significantly. This is in contrast with when the theory governing the strong gravitational field around the black hole is different from general relativity, where not only the diffe…

Models which accelerate the expansion of the universe through the addition of a function of the Ricci scalar f(R) leave a characteristic signature in the large-scale structure of the universe at the Compton wavelength scale of the extra scalar degree of freedom. We search for such a signature in current cosmological data sets: the WMAP cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum, SNLS supernovae distance measures, the SDSS luminous red galaxy power spectrum, and galaxy-CMB angular correlations. Due to theoretical uncertainties in the nonlinear evolution of f(R) models, the galaxy power sp…

The modified newtonian dynamics (MOND) paradigm of Milgrom can boast of a number of successful predictions regarding galactic dynamics; these are made without the assumption that dark matter plays a significant role. MOND requires gravitation to depart from Newtonian theory in the extragalactic regime where dynamical accelerations are small. So far relativistic gravitation theories proposed to underpin MOND have either clashed with the post-Newtonian tests of general relativity, or failed to provide significant gravitational lensing, or violated hallowed principles by exhibiting superluminal s…
We argue that dark energy with multiple fields is theoretically well-motivated and predicts distinct observational signatures, in particular when cosmic acceleration takes place along a trajectory that is highly non-geodesic in field space. Such models provide novel physics compared to $Λ$CDM and quintessence by allowing cosmic acceleration on steep potentials. From the theoretical point of view, these theories can easily satisfy the conjectured swampland constraints and may in certain cases be technically natural, potential problems which are endemic to standard single-field dark energy. Obse…
With the advent of gravitational-wave astronomy marked by the aLIGO GW150914 and GW151226 observations, a measurement of the cosmological speed of gravity will likely soon be realized. We show that a confirmation of equality to the speed of light as indicated by indirect Galactic observations will have important consequences for a very large class of alternative explanations of the late-time accelerated expansion of our Universe. It will break the dark degeneracy of self-accelerated Horndeski scalar-tensor theories in the large-scale structure that currently limits a rigorous discrimination be…
