Zone-center optical phonon linewidth is a key parameter for infrared and Raman spectra as well as the Lorenz oscillator model. While three-phonon scattering was often assumed to be the leading contribution, in this work we find, surprisingly, that higher-order phonon scattering universally plays a significant or even dominant role over three-phonon scattering at room temperature, and more so at elevated temperatures, for a wide range of materials including diamond, Si, Ge, boron arsenide (BAs), cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC), and $α$-quartz. This is enabled by the large fourphonon scattering phase space of zone-center optical phonons, and distinct from heat conduction where at room temperature four-phonon scattering is still secondary to three-phonon scattering. Moreover, our results imply that five-phonon and even higher-order scattering may be significant for some large band-gap materials, e.g., BAs. Our predicted infrared optical properties through the Lorenz oscillator model, after including four-phonon scattering, show much better agreement with experimental measurements than those three-phonon based predictions. This work will raise broad interest of studying high-order scattering in various areas beyond heat conduction.
Lattice thermal conductivities of zincblende- and wurtzite-type compounds with 33 combinations of elements are calculated with the single-mode relaxation-time approximation and linearized phonon Boltzmann equation from first-principles anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations. In 9 zincblende-type compounds, distributions of phonon linewidths (inverse phonon lifetimes) are discussed in detail. The phonon linewidths vary non-smoothly with respect to wave vector, which is explained from the imaginary parts of the self energies. It is presented that detailed combination of phonon-phonon interacti…
Colloidal cadmium chalcogenide nanoplates are two-dimensional semiconductors that have shown great application prospect for light-emitting technologies. Self-trapped state (STS), a special localized state originated from strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC), has great potential in one-step white light luminance owing to its broadband emission linewidth. However, achieving STS in cadmium chalcogenide nanocrystals is extremely challenging due to their intrinic weak EPC nature. By building hybrid superlattice (SL) structures via self-assembly of colloidal CdSe nanoplates (NPLs), we demonstrated …
This article introduces software called Phonon Explorer that implements a data mining workflow for large datasets of the neutron scattering function, S(Q, ω), measured on time-of-flight neutron spectrometers. This systematic approach takes advantage of all useful data contained in the dataset. It includes finding Brillouin zones where specific phonons have the highest scattering intensity, background subtraction, combining statistics in multiple Brillouin zones, and separating closely spaced phonon peaks. Using the software reduces the time needed to determine phonon dispersions, linewidths, a…
Magnon linewidth of La_1.2 Sr_1.8 Mn_2 O_7 near the Brillouin zone boundary is investigated from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Abrupt magnon broadening is ascribed to a strong magnon-phonon coupling. Magnon broadening observed in cubic perovskite manganites is also discussed.
Lead halide hybrid perovskites consist of an inorganic framework hosting a molecular cation located in the interstitial space. These compounds have been extensively studied as they have been identified as promising materials for photovoltaic applications with the interaction between the molecular cation and the inorganic framework implicated as influential for the electronic properties. CH3NH3PbCl3 undergoes two structural transitions from a high temperature cubic unit cell to a tetragonal phase at 177 K and an orthorhombic transition at 170 K. We have measured the low-frequency lattice dynami…
The acoustic phonons in the organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have been reported to have anomalously short lifetimes over a large part of the Brillouin zone. The resulting shortened mean free paths of the phonons have been implicated as the origin of the low thermal conductivity. We apply neutron spectroscopy to show that the same acoustic phonon energy linewidth broadening (corresponding to shortened lifetimes) occurs in the fully inorganic CsPbBr$_{3}$ by comparing the results on the organic-inorganic CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbCl$_{3}$. We investigate the critical dynamics near the three zon…
In order to study the magnetic excitation behaviors in colossal magnetoresistance manganites, a magnon-phonon interacting system is investigated. Sudden broadening of magnon linewidth is obtained when a magnon branch crosses over an optical phonon branch. Onset of the broadening is approximately determined by the magnon density of states. Anomalous magnon damping at the brillouine zone boundary observed in low Curie temperature manganites is explained.
Structural modifications in InP(111) due to 1.5 MeV implantation of Sb have been characterized using first order and second order Raman spectroscopy. With both Longitudinal Optical (LO) and Transverse Optical (TO) modes allowed for InP(111), we have investigated the evolution of both these modes as a function of fluence. Intensity, linewidth and shifts of the phonons, for both first order and second order Raman modes, display the increase in damage in the lattice with increasing fluence. The results suggest that the presence of a charge layer in the vicinity of the surface may be effecting the…
Recent neutron scattering measurements performed on the relaxor ferroelectric Pb[(Zn1/3Nb2/3)0.92Ti0.08]O3 (PZN-8%PT) in its cubic phase at 500 K, have revealed an anomalous ridge of inelastic scattering centered ~0.2 A-1 from the zone center (Gehring et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5216 (2000)). This ridge of scattering resembles a waterfall when plotted as a phonon dispersion diagram, and extends vertically from the transverse acoustic (TA) branch near 4 meV to the transverse optic (TO) branch near 9 meV. No zone center optic mode was found. We report new results from an extensive neutron scatt…
We present neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the low-energy phonons in single crystal BiFeO3. The dispersions of the three acoustic phonon modes (LA along [100], TA1 along [010] and TA2 along [110]) and two low energy optic phonon modes (LO and TO1) have been mapped out between 300 K and 700 K. Elastic constants are extracted from the phonon measurements. The energy linewidths of both TA phonons at the zone boundary clearly broaden when the system is warmed toward the magnetic ordering temperature TN = 640 K. This suggests that the magnetic and low-energy lattice dynamics in this mu…
We develop a first-principles scheme to calculate adiabatic and non-adiabatic phonon frequencies in the full Brillouin zone. The method relies on the variational properties of a force-constants functional with respect to the first-order perturbation of the electronic charge density and on the localization of the deformation potential in the Wannier function basis. This allows for calculation of phonon dispersion curves free from convergence issues related to Brillouin zone sampling. In addition our approach justify the use of the static screened potential in the calculation of the phonon linew…
Ti50 Pd50-xCrx is a high temperature shape memory alloy with a martensitic transformation temperature strongly dependent on the Cr composition. Prior to the transformation a premartensitic phase is present with an incommensurate modulated cubic lattice with wave vector of q0=(0.22, 0.22, 0). The temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering in the cubic phase is measured as a function temperature for x=6.5, 8.5, and 10 at. %. The lattice dynamics has been studied and reveals anomalous temperature and q-dependence of the [110]-TA2 transverse phonon branch. The phonon linewidth is broad over …
Resonance Raman scattering, a very effective and sensitive technique for atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide, can be used to observe the phonons from the entire Brillouin zone. In addition to the significance of resonance effect on the Raman spectrum it may also be used to probe the electron-phonon coupling. Our study is devoted to understand the phonons in layered MoS2, especially for very low frequency range (i.e. below 100 cm-1), as a function of temperature under the resonance effect. Understanding the phonon-phonon and electron-phonon coupling and the effects of…
We explore the effect of temperatures between 80 and 720 K on the energy and linewidth of zone-center transverse (TO) and longitudinal (LO) optical phonons in bulk gallium phosphide (GaP) using Fourier transform infrared ellipsometry from 0.03 to 0.60 eV. We extract the optical phonon parameters of GaP by fitting the ellipsometric angles with the Lowndes-Gervais model, which applies two different broadening parameters to the TO and LO phonons. In GaP, the two-phonon density of states is larger for the decay of TO phonons than for LO phonons. Therefore, we observed a larger TO phonon broadening…
We report on Raman scattering measurements of the A-site ordered YBaMn2O6 in the wide temperature range of 10-650K. Upon cooling almost all phonon modes show pronounced temperature dependencies of frequency, linewidth, and scattering intensity. This suggests that the octahedra tilting, Mn-O bond angles and lengths vary with temperature in a concerted way. The remarkable feature is that the high-temperature metallic and the charge and orbital ordered (CO-OO) states coexist down to T_N=195K. In the antiferromagnetic state zone-folded modes are induced by the CO-OO superstructure and the phonon m…
We use neutron scattering to characterize the acoustic phonons in the relaxor PMN and demonstrate the presence of an anisotropic damping mechanism directly related to short-range, polar correlations. For a large range of temperatures above Tc ~ 210, K, where dynamic polar correlations exist, acoustic phonons propagating along [1\bar{1}0] and polarized along [110] (TA2 phonons) are overdamped and softened across most of the Brillouin zone. By contrast, acoustic phonons propagating along [100] and polarized along [001] (TA1 phonons) are overdamped and softened for only a limited range of wavevec…
