Learning discriminative image feature embeddings is of great importance to visual recognition. To achieve better feature embeddings, most current methods focus on designing different network structures or loss functions, and the estimated feature embeddings are usually only related to the input images. In this paper, we propose Memory-based Neighbourhood Embedding (MNE) to enhance a general CNN feature by considering its neighbourhood. The method aims to solve two critical problems, i.e., how to acquire more relevant neighbours in the network training and how to aggregate the neighbourhood information for a more discriminative embedding. We first augment an episodic memory module into the network, which can provide more relevant neighbours for both training and testing. Then the neighbours are organized in a tree graph with the target instance as the root node. The neighbourhood information is gradually aggregated to the root node in a bottom-up manner, and aggregation weights are supervised by the class relationships between the nodes. We apply MNE on image search and few shot learning tasks. Extensive ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of each component, and our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.
This paper presents a novel automatic face recognition approach based on local binary patterns. This descriptor considers a local neighbourhood of a pixel to compute the feature vector values. This method is not very robust to handle image noise, variances and different illumination conditions. We address these issues by proposing a novel descriptor which considers more pixels and different neighbourhoods to compute the feature vector values. The proposed method is evaluated on two benchmark corpora, namely UFI and FERET face datasets. We experimentally show that our approach outperforms state…
This paper considers deep visual recognition on long-tailed data. To be general, we consider two applied scenarios, \ie, deep classification and deep metric learning. Under the long-tailed data distribution, the majority classes (\ie, tail classes) only occupy relatively few samples and are prone to lack of within-class diversity. A radical solution is to augment the tail classes with higher diversity. To this end, we introduce a simple and reliable method named Memory-based Jitter (MBJ). We observe that during training, the deep model constantly changes its parameters after every iteration, y…
Encoded Local Projections (ELP) is a recently introduced dense sampling image descriptor which uses projections in small neighbourhoods to construct a histogram/descriptor for the entire image. ELP has shown to be as accurate as other state-of-the-art features in searching medical images while being time and resource efficient. This paper attempts for the first time to utilize ELP descriptor as primary features for facial recognition and compare the results with LBP histogram on the Labeled Faces in the Wild dataset. We have evaluated descriptors by comparing the chi-squared distance of each i…

Facial expression recognition is a major problem in the domain of artificial intelligence. One of the best ways to solve this problem is the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, a large amount of data is required to train properly these networks but most of the datasets available for facial expression recognition are relatively small. A common way to circumvent the lack of data is to use CNNs trained on large datasets of different domains and fine-tuning the layers of such networks to the target domain. However, the fine-tuning process does not preserve the memory integrity as…
Humans learn to recognize and manipulate new objects in lifelong settings without forgetting the previously gained knowledge under non-stationary and sequential conditions. In autonomous systems, the agents also need to mitigate similar behavior to continually learn the new object categories and adapt to new environments. In most conventional deep neural networks, this is not possible due to the problem of catastrophic forgetting, where the newly gained knowledge overwrites existing representations. Furthermore, most state-of-the-art models excel either in recognizing the objects or in grasp p…
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) is a prominent recurrent neural network for extracting dependencies from sequential data such as time-series and multi-view data, having achieved impressive results for different visual recognition tasks. A conventional LSTM network can learn a model to posteriorly extract information from one input sequence. However, if two or more dependent sequences of data are simultaneously acquired, the conventional LSTM networks may only process those sequences consecutively, not taking benefit of the information carried out by their mutual dependencies. In this context, th…

Feature description is one of the most frequently studied areas in the expert systems and machine learning. Effective encoding of the images is an essential requirement for accurate matching. These encoding schemes play a significant role in recognition and retrieval systems. Facial recognition systems should be effective enough to accurately recognize individuals under intrinsic and extrinsic variations of the system. The templates or descriptors used in these systems encode spatial relationships of the pixels in the local neighbourhood of an image. Features encoded using these hand crafted d…
Face recognition has made great progress with the development of deep learning. However, video face recognition (VFR) is still an ongoing task due to various illumination, low-resolution, pose variations and motion blur. Most existing CNN-based VFR methods only obtain a feature vector from a single image and simply aggregate the features in a video, which less consider the correlations of face images in one video. In this paper, we propose a novel Attention-Set based Metric Learning (ASML) method to measure the statistical characteristics of image sets. It is a promising and generalized extens…

In this work we target the problem of estimating accurately localised correspondences between a pair of images. We adopt the recent Neighbourhood Consensus Networks that have demonstrated promising performance for difficult correspondence problems and propose modifications to overcome their main limitations: large memory consumption, large inference time and poorly localised correspondences. Our proposed modifications can reduce the memory footprint and execution time more than $10\times$, with equivalent results. This is achieved by sparsifying the correlation tensor containing tentative matc…

Facial features are defined as the local relationships that exist amongst the pixels of a facial image. Hand-crafted descriptors identify the relationships of the pixels in the local neighbourhood defined by the kernel. Kernel is a two dimensional matrix which is moved across the facial image. Distinctive information captured by the kernel with limited number of pixel achieves satisfactory recognition and retrieval accuracies on facial images taken under constrained environment (controlled variations in light, pose, expressions, and background). To achieve similar accuracies under unconstraine…

In this paper a novel hand crafted local quadruple pattern (LQPAT) is proposed for facial image recognition and retrieval. Most of the existing hand-crafted descriptors encodes only a limited number of pixels in the local neighbourhood. Under unconstrained environment the performance of these descriptors tends to degrade drastically. The major problem in increasing the local neighbourhood is that, it also increases the feature length of the descriptor. The proposed descriptor try to overcome these problems by defining an efficient encoding structure with optimal feature length. The proposed de…

The approach uses an arbitrary end-to-end text recognition system to obtain text region proposals and their, possibly erroneous, transcriptions. The proposed method includes matching of imprecise transcription to weak annotations and edit distance guided neighbourhood search. It produces nearly error-free, localised instances of scene text, which we treat as "pseudo ground truth" (PGT). We apply the method to two weakly-annotated datasets. While today's video recognition systems parse snapshots or short clips accurately, they cannot connect the dots and reason across a longer range of time yet. Most existing video architectures can only process <5 seconds of a video without hitting the computation or memory bottlenecks. In this paper, we propose a new strategy to overcome this challenge. Instead of trying to process more frames at once like most existing methods, we propose to process videos in an online fashion and cache "memory" at each iteration. Through the memory, the model can reference prior context for long-term modeling…

Moreover, we note that manually yielding annotations for such a task is extraordinarily time- and labor-consuming. To address this,…

The hidden layers in RNNs can be regarded as the memory units, which are helpful in storing information in sequential contexts. However, when dealing with high dimensional input data, such as video and text, the input-to-hidden linear transformation in RNNs brings high memory usage and huge computational cost.
