An omnidirectional image (ODI) enables viewers to look in every direction from a fixed point through a head-mounted display providing an immersive experience compared to that of a standard image. Designing immersive virtual reality systems with ODIs is challenging as they require high resolution content. In this paper, we study super-resolution for ODIs and propose an improved generative adversarial network based model which is optimized to handle the artifacts obtained in the spherical observational space. Specifically, we propose to use a fast PatchGAN discriminator, as it needs fewer parameters and improves the super-resolution at a fine scale. We also explore the generative models with adversarial learning by introducing a spherical-content specific loss function, called 360-SS. To train and test the performance of our proposed model we prepare a dataset of 4500 ODIs. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method and identify new challenges in ODI super-resolution for future investigations.
In this paper, we propose a novel virtual reality image quality assessment (VR IQA) with adversarial learning for omnidirectional images. To take into account the characteristics of the omnidirectional image, we devise deep networks including novel quality score predictor and human perception guider. The proposed quality score predictor automatically predicts the quality score of distorted image using the latent spatial and position feature. The proposed human perception guider criticizes the predicted quality score of the predictor with the human perceptual score using adversarial learning. F…

Omnidirectional images (ODIs), also known as 360-degree images, enable viewers to explore all directions of a given 360-degree scene from a fixed point. Designing an immersive imaging system with ODI is challenging as such systems require very large resolution coverage of the entire 360 viewing space to provide an enhanced quality of experience (QoE). Despite remarkable progress on single image super-resolution (SISR) methods with deep-learning techniques, no study for quality assessments of super-resolved ODIs exists to analyze the quality of such SISR techniques. This paper proposes an objec…

Omnidirectional images (ODIs) have obtained lots of research interest for immersive experiences. Although ODIs require extremely high resolution to capture details of the entire scene, the resolutions of most ODIs are insufficient. Previous methods attempt to solve this issue by image super-resolution (SR) on equirectangular projection (ERP) images. However, they omit geometric properties of ERP in the degradation process, and their models can hardly generalize to real ERP images. In this paper, we propose Fisheye downsampling, which mimics the real-world imaging process and synthesizes more r…

Many wireless networks, including 5G NR (New Radio) and future beyond 5G cellular systems, are expected to operate on multiple frequency bands. This paper considers the band assignment (BA) problem in dual-band systems, where the basestation (BS) chooses one of the two available frequency bands (centimeter-wave and millimeter-wave bands) to communicate with the user equipment (UE). While the millimeter-wave band might offer higher data rate, there is a significant probability of outage during which the communication should be carried on the (more reliable) centimeter-wave band. With mobility, …

When watching omnidirectional images (ODIs), subjects can access different viewports by moving their heads. Therefore, it is necessary to predict subjects' head fixations on ODIs. Inspired by generative adversarial imitation learning (GAIL), this paper proposes a novel approach to predict saliency of head fixations on ODIs, named SalGAIL. First, we establish a dataset for attention on ODIs (AOI). In contrast to traditional datasets, our AOI dataset is large-scale, which contains the head fixations of 30 subjects viewing 600 ODIs. Next, we mine our AOI dataset and determine three findings: (1) …
The success of deep learning for medical imaging tasks, such as classification, is heavily reliant on the availability of large-scale datasets. However, acquiring datasets with large quantities of labeled data is challenging, as labeling is expensive and time-consuming. Semi-supervised learning (SSL) is a growing alternative to fully-supervised learning, but requires unlabeled samples for training. In medical imaging, many datasets lack unlabeled data entirely, so SSL can't be conventionally utilized. We propose 3N-GAN, or 3 Network Generative Adversarial Networks, to perform semi-supervised c…

Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have shown promising results on a wide variety of complex tasks. Recent experiments show adversarial training provides useful gradients to the generator that helps attain better performance. In this paper, we intend to theoretically analyze whether supervised learning with adversarial features can outperform sole supervision, or not. First, we show that supervised learning without adversarial features suffer from vanishing gradient issue in near optimal region. Second, we analyze how adversarial learning augmented with supervised signal mitigates this vani…
Spatial resolution of medical images can be improved using super-resolution methods. Real Enhanced Super Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (Real-ESRGAN) is one of the recent effective approaches utilized to produce higher resolution images, given input images of lower resolution. In this paper, we apply this method to enhance the spatial resolution of 2D MR images. In our proposed approach, we slightly modify the structure of the Real-ESRGAN to train 2D Magnetic Resonance images (MRI) taken from the Brain Tumor Segmentation Challenge (BraTS) 2018 dataset. The obtained results are valid…
Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (ESRGAN) is a perceptual-driven approach for single image super resolution that is able to produce photorealistic images. Despite the visual quality of these generated images, there is still room for improvement. In this fashion, the model is extended to further improve the perceptual quality of the images. We have designed a novel block to replace the one used by the original ESRGAN. Moreover, we introduce noise inputs to the generator network in order to exploit stochastic variation. The resulting images present more realistic textures…

Recently deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved significant success in real-world image super-resolution (SR). However, adversarial image samples with quasi-imperceptible noises could threaten deep learning SR models. In this paper, we propose a robust deep learning framework for real-world SR that randomly erases potential adversarial noises in the frequency domain of input images or features. The rationale is that on the SR task clean images or features have a different pattern from the attacked ones in the frequency domain. Observing that existing adversarial attacks usually add high-fre…

In this work we propose an adversarial learning approach to generate high resolution MRI scans from low resolution images. The architecture, based on the SRGAN model, adopts 3D convolutions to exploit volumetric information. For the discriminator, the adversarial loss uses least squares in order to stabilize the training. For the generator, the loss function is a combination of a least squares adversarial loss and a content term based on mean square error and image gradients in order to improve the quality of the generated images. We explore different solutions for the upsampling phase. We pre…
Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) receive great attentions recently due to its excellent performance in image generation, transformation, and super-resolution. However, GAN has rarely been studied and trained for classification, leading that the generated images may not be appropriate for classification. In this paper, we propose a novel Generative Adversarial Classifier (GAC) particularly for low-resolution Handwriting Character Recognition. Specifically, involving additionally a classifier in the training process of normal GANs, GAC is calibrated for learning suitable structures and rest…

Single-image super-resolution aims to generate a high-resolution version of a low-resolution image, which serves as an essential component in many computer vision applications. This paper investigates the robustness of deep learning-based super-resolution methods against adversarial attacks, which can significantly deteriorate the super-resolved images without noticeable distortion in the attacked low-resolution images. It is demonstrated that state-of-the-art deep super-resolution methods are highly vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Different levels of robustness of different methods are ana…

Estimating the depth of omnidirectional images is more challenging than that of normal field-of-view (NFoV) images because the varying distortion can significantly twist an object's shape. The existing methods suffer from troublesome distortion while estimating the depth of omnidirectional images, leading to inferior performance. To reduce the negative impact of the distortion influence, we propose a distortion-tolerant omnidirectional depth estimation algorithm using a dual-cubemap. It comprises two modules: Dual-Cubemap Depth Estimation (DCDE) module and Boundary Revision (BR) module. In DCD…
Omnidirectional multi-view stereo (MVS) vision is attractive for its ultra-wide field-of-view (FoV), enabling machines to perceive 360° 3D surroundings. However, the existing solutions require expensive dense depth labels for supervision, making them impractical in real-world applications. In this paper, we propose the first unsupervised omnidirectional MVS framework based on multiple fisheye images. To this end, we project all images to a virtual view center and composite two panoramic images with spherical geometry from two pairs of back-to-back fisheye images. The two 360° images formulate …

We propose discriminative adversarial networks (DAN) for semi-supervised learning and loss function learning. Our DAN approach builds upon generative adversarial networks (GANs) and conditional GANs but includes the key differentiator of using two discriminators instead of a generator and a discriminator. DAN can be seen as a framework to learn loss functions for predictors that also implements semi-supervised learning in a straightforward manner. We propose instantiations of DAN for two different prediction tasks: classification and ranking. Our experimental results on three datasets of diffe…
We extend Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to the semi-supervised context by forcing the discriminator network to output class labels. We train a generative model G and a discriminator D on a dataset with inputs belonging to one of N classes. At training time, D is made to predict which of N+1 classes the input belongs to, where an extra class is added to correspond to the outputs of G. We show that this method can be used to create a more data-efficient classifier and that it allows for generating higher quality samples than a regular GAN.

A main challenge for tasks on panorama lies in the distortion of objects among images. In this work, we propose a Distortion-Aware Monocular Omnidirectional (DAMO) dense depth estimation network to address this challenge on indoor panoramas with two steps. First, we introduce a distortion-aware module to extract calibrated semantic features from omnidirectional images. Specifically, we exploit deformable convolution to adjust its sampling grids to geometric variations of distorted objects on panoramas and then utilize a strip pooling module to sample against horizontal distortion introduced by…
In this paper we present a method for learning a discriminative classifier from unlabeled or partially labeled data. Our approach is based on an objective function that trades-off mutual information between observed examples and their predicted categorical class distribution, against robustness of the classifier to an adversarial generative model. The resulting algorithm can either be interpreted as a natural generalization of the generative adversarial networks (GAN) framework or as an extension of the regularized information maximization (RIM) framework to robust classification against an op…

Rare diseases affect a relatively small number of people, which limits investment in research for treatments and cures. Developing an efficient method for rare disease detection is a crucial first step towards subsequent clinical research. In this paper, we present a semi-supervised learning framework for rare disease detection using generative adversarial networks. Our method takes advantage of the large amount of unlabeled data for disease detection and achieves the best results in terms of precision-recall score compared to baseline techniques.

In recent years, malware detection has become an active research topic in the area of Internet of Things (IoT) security. The principle is to exploit knowledge from large quantities of continuously generated malware. Existing algorithms practice available malware features for IoT devices and lack real-time prediction behaviors. More research is thus required on malware detection to cope with real-time misclassification of the input IoT data. Motivated by this, in this paper we propose an adversarial self-supervised architecture for detecting malware in IoT networks, SETTI, considering samples o…

Convolutional Networks (ConvNets) excel at semantic segmentation and have become a vital component for perception in autonomous driving. Enabling an all-encompassing view of street-scenes, omnidirectional cameras present themselves as a perfect fit in such systems. Most segmentation models for parsing urban environments operate on common, narrow Field of View (FoV) images. Transferring these models from the domain they were designed for to 360-degree perception, their performance drops dramatically, e.g., by an absolute 30.0% (mIoU) on established test-beds. To bridge the gap in terms of FoV a…

To address this, here we introduce a novel diffusion adversarial representation learning (DARL) model that leverages a denoising diffusion probabilistic model with adversarial learning, and apply it to vessel seg…
