The reaction 11B(p, 3$α$) is relevant for fields as diverse as material science, nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, and fusion science. However, for the channel proceeding via the ground state of 8Be, the available cross-section data shows large discrepancies of both normalization and energy scale. The present paper reports on a measurement of the 11B(p, ${α_0}$) cross section using an array of modern large area segmented silicon detectors and low beam current on an enriched thin target with the aim of resolving the discrepancies amongst previous measurements.
Three precise measurements for elastic pd scattering at 135 MeV/A have been performed with the three different experimental setups. The cross sections are described well by the theoretical predictions based on modern nucleon-nucleon forces combined with three nucleon forces. Relativistic Faddeev calculations show that relativistic effects are restricted to backward angles. This result supports the two measurements recently reported by RIKEN and contradicts the KVI data.
A complete high precision set of deuteron analyzing powers for elastic deuteron-proton ($dp$) scattering at 250 MeV/nucleon (MeV/N) has been measured. The new data are presented together with data from previous measurements at 70, 100, 135 and 200 MeV/N. They are compared with the results of three-nucleon (3N) Faddeev calculations based on modern nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials alone or combined with two models of three nucleon forces (3NFs): the Tucson-Melbourne 99 (TM99) and Urbana IX. At 250 MeV/N large discrepancies between pure NN models and data, which are not resolved by including 3NFs,…
Background: Accurate knowledge of the $^{13}$C($α$,$n$)$^{16}$O reaction cross section is important for the understanding of the s-process in AGB stars, since it is considered to be the main source of neutrons. The sub-threshold 1/2$^+$ state at excitation energy of 6.356 MeV in $^{17}$O has a strong influence on the reaction cross section at energies relevant for astrophysics. Several experiments have been performed to determine the contribution of this state to the $^{13}$C($α,n)^{16}$O reaction rate. Nevertheless, significant discrepancies between different measurements remain. Purpose: The…
We address the $Λ$-hypernuclear `overbinding problem' in light hypernuclei which stands for a 1--3 MeV excessive $Λ$ separation energy calculated in $_Λ^5$He. This problem arises in most few-body calculations that reproduce ground-state $Λ$ separation energies in the lighter $Λ$ hypernuclei within various hyperon-nucleon interaction models. Recent pionless effective field theory nuclear few-body calculations are extended in this work to $Λ$ hypernuclei. At leading order, the $ΛN$ low-energy constants are associated with $ΛN$ scattering lengths and the $ΛNN$ low-energy constants are fitted to $…
The vector Ay and tensor analyzing powers Ayy and Axx for dp- elastic scattering were measured at Td = 880 MeV over the c.m. angular range from 60 to 140 degrees at the JINR Nuclotron. The data are compared with predictions of different theoretical models based on the use of nucleon-nucleon forces only. The observed discrepancies of the measured analyzing powers from the calculations require the consideration of additional mechanisms.
We describe a double-scattering experiment with a novel tagged neutron beam to measure differential cross sections for np back-scattering to better than 2% absolute precision. The measurement focuses on angles and energies where the cross section magnitude and angle-dependence constrain the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant, but existing data show serious discrepancies among themselves and with energy-dependent partial wave analyses (PWA). The present results are in good accord with the PWA, but deviate systematically from other recent measurements.
We report measurements of the cross-section and a complete set of polarization transfer coefficients for the ${}^{3}{\rm He}(p,n)$ reaction at a bombarding energy $T_p$ = 346 MeV and a reaction angle $θ_{\rm lab}$ = $0^{\circ}$. The data are compared with the corresponding free nucleon-nucleon values on the basis of the predominance of quasi-elastic scattering processes. Significant discrepancies have been observed in the polarization transfer $D_{LL}(0^{\circ})$, which are presumably the result of the three-proton $T$ = 3/2 resonance. The spin--parity of the resonance is estimated to be $1/2^…
Double-differential cross sections for light-ion (p, d, t, 3He and alpha) production in carbon induced by 96 MeV neutrons have been measured at eight laboratory angles from 20 degrees to 160 degrees in steps of 20 degrees. Experimental techniques are presented as well as procedures for data taking and data reduction. Deduced energy-differential, angle-differential and production cross sections are reported. Experimental cross sections are compared with theoretical reaction model calculations and experimental data in the literature. The measured particle data show marked discrepancies from the …
An extended version of the Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM) of nuclear reactions is applied to analyze nucleon-induced fission cross sections for Bi-209 and Pb-208 nuclei in the 45-500 MeV energy range. The available data on linear momentum transfer are analyzed as well. The results are compared with analytical approximations resulting from a comparative critical analysis of all available experimental data. Systematic discrepancies between calculations and experimental data are revealed. A modification of the CEM is proposed, which significantly improves the model predictions for projectile energie…
The 24Mg(3He,t)24Al reaction has been studied at E(3He)=420 MeV. An energy resolution of 35 keV was achieved. Gamow-Teller strengths to discrete levels in 24Al are extracted by using a recently developed empirical relationship for the proportionality between Gamow-Teller strengths and differential cross sections at zero momentum transfer. Except for small discrepancies for a few weak excitations, good agreement with previous 24Mg(p,n) data and nuclear-structure calculations using the USDA/B interactions in the sd shell-model space is found. The excitation energy of several levels in 24Al of si…
A tagged medium-energy neutron beam has been used in a precise measurement of the absolute differential cross section for np back-scattering. The results resolve significant discrepancies within the np database concerning the angular dependence in this regime. The experiment has determined the absolute normalization with 1.5% uncertainty, suitable to verify constraints of supposedly comparable precision that arise from the rest of the database in partial wave analyses. The analysis procedures, especially those associated with evaluation of systematic errors in the experiment, are described in …

The quantification of isotopes content in materials is extremely important in many research and industrial fields. Accurate determination of boron concentration is very critical in semiconductor, superconductor and steel industry, in environmental and medical applications as well as in nuclear and astrophysics research. The detection of B isotopes and of their ratio in synthetic and natural materials may be accomplished by gamma spectroscopy using the $^{10}$B(p,$α_1 γ$)$^7$Be and $^{11}$B(p,$γ$)$^{12}$C reactions at low proton energy. Here, the $^{10}$B(p,$α_1 γ$)$^7$Be cross section is repor…
Proton-${}^3$H elastic scattering and charge-exchange reaction ${}^3$H$(p,n){}^3$He in the energy regime above four-nucleon breakup threshold are described in the momentum-space transition operator framework. Fully converged results are obtained using realistic two-nucleon potentials and two-proton Coulomb force as dynamic input. Differential cross section, proton analyzing power, outgoing neutron polarization, and proton-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are calculated between 6 and 30 MeV proton beam energy. Good agreement with the experimental data is found for the differential …
Cross-sections for ${}^{nat}Pb(p,xn){}^{201-207}Bi$, ${}^{204}Pb(p,1-4n){}^{201-204}Bi$ and ${}^{206}Pb(p,3n){}^{204}Bi$ reactions have been determined in the astrophysical energy range $20-30 \, MeV$. The analysis were performed by $γ$-spectroscopy associated with half-lives measurements. The results were compared with previously experimental data, when available, and with theoretical calculations performed using TALYS code. We report a possible new $γ$ transition from ${}^{204m}{Pb}$ and other theoretical discrepancies, probably due overestimation of the Coulomb barrier and neutron binding e…
The neutron capture cross section of 14C is of relevance for several nucleosynthesis scenarios such as inhomogeneous Big Bang models, neutron induced CNO cycles, and neutrino driven wind models for the r process. The 14C(n,g) reaction is also important for the validation of the Coulomb dissociation method, where the (n,g) cross section can be indirectly obtained via the time-reversed process. So far, the example of 14C is the only case with neutrons where both, direct measurement and indirect Coulomb dissociation, have been applied. Unfortunately, the interpretation is obscured by discrepancie…
We present results from direct measurements of the $^{27}{\rm Al}(α,n)$ thick target yield from laboratory incident energies $E_α\approx$ 3$-$5~MeV, performed with the $^{3}$HeBF$_{3}$ Giant Barrel (HeBGB) neutron detector at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory. Our measurements have a small energy cadence in order to address discrepancies and sparseness of thick-target yield data sets existing for this energy region. We find general agreement with existing data sets, including yields derived from cross section data, while resolving a discrepancy between existing thick-target yield data sets fo…
The bremsstrahlung flux-averaged cross sections for the photoneutron reactions $^{\text{93}}$Nb($γ$,xn;x=1-5)$^{\text{(93-x)m,g}}$Nb were measured in the range of boundary energies of bremsstrahlung $γ$-quanta $E_{γ\text{max}}$=33-93 MeV with a step $ΔE_{γ\text{max}}\approx $ 2 MeV. The isomeric ratios of the average cross-sections of the products of the reactions $^{\text{93}}$Nb ($γ$ ,4n)$^{\text{89m,g}}$Nb and $^{\text{93}}$Nb($γ$,5n)$^{\text{88m,g}}$ Nb were determined in the energy ranges $E_{γ\text{max}}$ = 50-93 and 70-93 MeV, respectively. The experiments were carried out on the beam o…
High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV are presented for 72 kinematically complete configurations. The data cover a large region of the available phase space, divided into a systematic grid of kinematical variables. They are compared with theoretical predictions, in which the full dynamics of the three-nucleon (3N) system is obtained in three different ways: realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials are combined with model 3N forces (3NF's) or with an effective 3NF resulting from explicit treatment of the Delta-isobar excitation. Alternatively, the…
The Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels (CDCC) method is a well established theory for direct nuclear reactions which includes breakup to all orders. Alternatively, the 3-body problem can be solved exactly within the Faddeev formalism which explicitly includes breakup and transfer channels to all orders. With the aim to understand how CDCC compares with the exact 3-body Faddeev formulation, we study deuteron induced reactions on: i) $^{10}$Be at $E_{\rm d}= 21.4, 40.9 \; {\rm and} \; 71$ MeV; ii) $^{12}$C at $E_{\rm d} = 12 \; {\rm and} \; 56$ MeV; and iii) $^{48}$Ca at $E_{\rm d} = 56$ MeV…
Prompt fission neutron spectra from $^{239}$Pu($n,f$) were measured for incident neutron energies from $0.7$ to $700\,$MeV at the Weapons Neutron Research facility (WNR) of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. A newly designed high-efficiency fission chamber was coupled to the highly segmented Chi-Nu array to detect neutrons emitted in fission events. The double time-of-flight technique was used to deduce the incident-neutron energies from the spallation target and the outgoing-neutron energies from the fission chamber. Prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) were measured with respect to $^{2…
There are some discrepancies in the low energy data on the photoabsorption cross section of $^4$He. We calculate the cross section with realistic nuclear forces and explicitly correlated Gaussian functions. Final state interactions and two- and three-body decay channels are taken into account. The cross section is evaluated in two methods: With the complex scaling method the total absorption cross section is obtained up to the rest energy of a pion, and with the microscopic $R$-matrix method both cross sections $^4$He($γ, p$)$^3$H and $^4$He($γ, n$)$^3$He are calculated below 40\,MeV. Both met…
Background: The $^{15}$O($α,γ$)$^{19}$Ne bottleneck reaction in Type I x-ray bursts is the most important thermonuclear reaction rate to constrain experimentally, in order to improve the accuracy of burst light-curve simulations. A proposed technique to determine the thermonuclear rate of this reaction employs the $^{20}$Mg($βpα$)$^{15}$O decay sequence. The key $^{15}$O($α,γ$)$^{19}$Ne resonance at an excitation of 4.03 MeV is now known to be fed in $^{20}$Mg($βpγ$)$^{19}$Ne; however, the energies of the protons feeding the 4.03 MeV state are unknown. Knowledge of the proton energies will fac…
We present new accurate measurements of the differential cross section $σ(θ)$ and the proton analyzing power $A_{y}$ for proton-$^{3}$He elastic scattering at various energies. A supersonic gas jet target has been employed to obtain these low energy cross section measurements. The $σ(θ)$ distributions have been measured at $E_{p}$ = 0.99, 1.59, 2.24, 3.11, and 4.02 MeV. Full angular distributions of $A_{y}$ have been measured at $E_{p}$ = 1.60, 2.25, 3.13, and 4.05 MeV. This set of high-precision data is compared to four-body variational calculations employing realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) an…
The $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C fusion reaction plays a crucial role in stellar evolution and explosions. Its open reaction channels mainly include $α$, $p$, $n$, and ${}^{8}$Be. Despite more than a half century of efforts, large discrepancies remain among the experimental data measured using various techniques. In this work, we analyze the existing data using the statistical model. Our calculation shows: 1) the relative systematic uncertainties of the predicted branching ratios get smaller as the predicted ratios increase; 2) the total modified astrophysical S-factors (S$^*$ factors) of the $p$ and $α$…
The elastic resonance scattering protons decayed from $^{11}$B to the ground state of $^{10}$Be were measured using the thick-target technique in inverse kinematics at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). The obtained excitation functions were well described by a multichannel R-matrix procedure under the kinematics process assumption of resonant elastic scattering. The excitation energy of the resonant states ranges from 13.0 to 17.0 MeV, and their resonant parameters such as the resonant energy E$_{x}$, the spin-parity J$^π$, and the proton-decay partial width $Γ_p$ were determ…
We investigate the isospin transport with 40,48 Ca+ 40,48 Ca reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon, measured with the coupling of the VAMOS high acceptance spectrometer and the INDRA charged particle multidetector. Using the quasi-projectile remnant measured with VAMOS and carefully selected light-charged-particles measured in coincidence with INDRA, a reconstruction method is applied to estimate the excited quasi-projectile (QP) on an event-by-event basis. The isospin diffusion is investigated using the isospin transport ratio with the asymmetry $δ$ = (N -- Z)/A of the projectile as an isospin-sensitiv…
The transverse spin correlations A_{x,x} and A_{y,y} have been measured in the pol{d} pol{p} -> p_spec {pp}_s pi- reaction at COSY-ANKE at 353 MeV per nucleon. Here {pp}_s denotes a proton-proton pair with low excitation energy, which is dominantly in the 1S0 state. By measuring three protons in the final state it was possible to extract events where there was a spectator proton p_spec so that the reaction could be interpreted in terms of quasi-free pol{n} pol{p} -> {pp}_s pi-. The proton analyzing power in this reaction was also deduced from this data set by averaging over the polarization of…
