It is known that the satisfiability problems of the product logics K4xS5 and S4xS5 are NEXPTIME-hard and that the satisfiability problem of the logic SSL of subset spaces is PSPACE-hard. We improve these lower bounds for the complexity of these problems by showing that all three problems are EXPSPACE-hard under logspace reduction. In another paper we show that these problems are in ESPACE. This shows that all three problems are EXPSPACE-complete.
It is known that the satisfiability problems of the product logics K4xS5 and S4xS5 and of the logic SSL of subset spaces are in N2EXPTIME. We improve this upper bound for the complexity of these problems by presenting ESPACE-algorithms for these problems. In another paper we show that these problems are EXPSPACE-hard. This shows that all three problems are EXPSPACE-complete.
We note that the remarkable EXPSPACE-hardness result in [Göller, Haase, Ouaknine, Worrell, ICALP 2010] ([GHOW10] for short) allows us to answer an open complexity question for simulation preorder of succinct one counter nets (i.e., one counter automata with no zero tests where counter increments and decrements are integers written in binary). This problem, as well as bisimulation equivalence, turn out to be EXPSPACE-complete. The technique of [GHOW10] was referred to by Hunter [RP 2015] for deriving EXPSPACE-hardness of reachability games on succinct one-counter nets. We first give a direct se…
Finding whether a linear-constraint loop has a linear ranking function is an important key to understanding the loop behavior, proving its termination and establishing iteration bounds. If no preconditions are provided, the decision problem is known to be in coNP when variables range over the integers and in PTIME for the rational numbers, or real numbers. Here we show that deciding whether a linear-constraint loop with a precondition, specifically with partially-specified input, has a linear ranking function is EXPSPACE-hard over the integers, and PSPACE-hard over the rationals. The precise c…
The choice of the right trade-off between expressiveness and complexity is the main issue in interval temporal logic. In their seminal paper, Halpern and Shoham showed that the satisfiability problem for HS (the temporal logic of Allen's relations) is highly undecidable over any reasonable class of linear orders. In order to recover decidability, one can restrict the set of temporal modalities and/or the class of models. In the following, we focus on the satisfiability problem for HS fragments under the homogeneity assumption, according to which any proposition letter holds over an interval if…
We study the complexity of the reachability problem for Vector Addition Systems with States (VASSes) in fixed dimensions. We provide four lower bounds improving the currently known state-of-the-art: 1) \np-hardness for unary flat $4$-VASSes (VASSes in dimension 4), 2) \pspace-hardness for unary $5$-VASSes, 3) \expspace-hardness for binary $6$-VASSes and 4) \tower-hardness for unary $8$-VASSes.
Interval temporal logics provide a natural framework for qualitative and quantitative temporal reason- ing over interval structures, where the truth of formulae is defined over intervals rather than points. In this paper, we study the complexity of the satisfiability problem for Metric Propositional Neigh- borhood Logic (MPNL). MPNL features two modalities to access intervals "to the left" and "to the right" of the current one, respectively, plus an infinite set of length constraints. MPNL, interpreted over the naturals, has been recently shown to be decidable by a doubly exponential procedure…
Constraint LTL, a generalisation of LTL over Presburger constraints, is often used as a formal language to specify the behavior of operational models with constraints. The freeze quantifier can be part of the language, as in some real-time logics, but this variable-binding mechanism is quite general and ubiquitous in many logical languages (first-order temporal logics, hybrid logics, logics for sequence diagrams, navigation logics, logics with lambda-abstraction etc.). We show that Constraint LTL over the simple domain (N,=) augmented with the freeze quantifier is undecidable which is a surpri…
We provide a lower complexity bound for the satisfiability problem of a multi-agent justification logic, establishing that the general NEXP upper bound from our previous work is tight. We then use a simple modification of the corresponding reduction to prove that satisfiability for all multi-agent justification logics from there is hard for the Sigma 2 p class of the second level of the polynomial hierarchy - given certain reasonable conditions. Our methods improve on these required conditions for the same lower bound for the single-agent justification logics, proven by Buss and Kuznets in 200…
In the nineties Immerman and Medina initiated the search for syn- tactic tools to prove NP-completeness. In their work, amongst several results, they conjecture that the NP-completeness of a problem defined by the conjunction of a sentence in Existential Second Order Logic with a First Order sentence, necessarily imply the NP-completeness of the problem defined by the Existential Second Order sentence alone. This is interesting because if true it would justify the restriction heuristic pro- posed in Garey and Johnson in his classical book on NP completeness, which roughly says that in some cas…
Dynamic networks of concurrent pushdown systems (DCPS) are a theoretical model for multi-threaded recursive programs with shared global state and dynamical creation of threads. The (global) state reachability problem for DCPS is undecidable in general, but Atig et al. (2009) showed that it becomes decidable, and is in 2EXPSPACE, when each thread is restricted to a fixed number of context switches. The best known lower bound for the problem is EXPSPACE-hard and this lower bound follows already when each thread is a finite-state machine and runs atomically to completion (i.e., does not switch co…
We prove some results on the Wadge order on the space of sets of natural numbers endowed with Scott topology, and more generally, on omega-continuous domains. Using alternating decreasing chains we characterize the property of Wadge hardness for the classes of the Hausdorff difference hierarchy (iterated differences of open sets). A similar characterization holds for Wadge one-to-one and finite-to-one completeness. We consider the same questions for the effectivization of the Wadge relation. We also show that for the space of sets of natural numbers endowed with the Scott topology, in each cla…
