The entropy of a quantum operation, defined as the von Neumann entropy of the corresponding Choi-Jamiołkowski state, characterizes the coupling of the principal system with the environment. For any quantum channel $Φ$ acting on a state of size $N$ one defines the complementary channel $\tilde Φ$, which sends the input state into the state of the environment after the operation. Making use of subadditivity of entropy we show that for any dimension $N$ the sum of both entropies, $S(Φ)+ S(\tilde Φ)$, is bounded from below. This result characterizes the trade-off between the information on the initial quantum state accessible to the principal system and the information leaking to the environment. For one qubit maps, $N=2$, we describe the interpolating family of depolarising maps, for which the sum of both entropies gives the lower boundary of the region allowed in the space spanned by both entropies.
We conjecture a new entropic uncertainty principle governing the entropy of complementary observations made on a system given side information in the form of quantum states, generalizing the entropic uncertainty relation of Maassen and Uffink [Phys. Rev. Lett. 60, 1103 (1988)]. We prove a special case for certain conjugate observables by adapting a similar result found by Christandl and Winter pertaining to quantum channels [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 51, 3159 (2005)], and discuss possible applications of this result to the decoupling of quantum systems and for security analysis in quantum crypto…
We conjecture new uncertainty relations which restrict correlations between results of measurements performed by two separated parties on a shared quantum state. The first uncertainty relation bounds the sum of two mutual informations when one party measures a single observable and the other party measures one of two observables. The uncertainty relation does not follow from Maassen-Uffink uncertainty relation and is much stronger than Hall uncertainty relation derived from the latter. The second uncertainty relation bounds the sum of two mutual informations when each party measures one of two…
We employ quantum relative entropy to establish the relation between the measurement uncertainty and its disturbance on a state in the presence (and absence) of quantum memory. For two incompatible observables, we present the measurement-disturbance relation and the disturbance trade-off relation. We find that without quantum memory the disturbance induced by the measurement is never less than the measurement uncertainty and with quantum memory they depend on the conditional entropy of the measured state. We also generalize these relations to the case with multiple measurements. These relation…
Quantum entropy is an important measure for describing the uncertainty of a quantum state, more uncertainty in subsystems implies stronger quantum entanglement between subsystems. Our goal in this work is to quantify bipartite entanglement using both von Neumann entropy and its complementary dual. We first propose a type of dual entropy from Shannon entropy. We define $S^{t}$-entropy entanglement based on von Neumann entropy and its complementary dual. This implies an analytic formula for two-qubit systems. We show that the monogamy properties of the $S^{t}$-entropy entanglement and the entang…
The uncertainty relations, pioneered by Werner Heisenberg nearly 90 years ago, set a fundamental limitation on the joint measurability of complementary observables. This limitation has long been a subject of debate, which has been reignited recently due to new proposed forms of measurement uncertainty relations. The present work is associated with a new error trade-off relation for compatible observables approximating two incompatible observables, in keeping with the spirit of Heisenberg's original ideas of 1927. We report the first \textsl{direct} test and confirmation of the tight bounds pre…
When we extract information from a system by performing a quantum measurement, the state of the system is disturbed due to the backaction of the measurement. Numerous studies have been performed to quantitatively formulate tradeoff relations between information and disturbance. We formulate a tradeoff relation between information and disturbance from an estimation-theoretic point of view, and derive an inequality between them. The information is defined as the classical Fisher information obtained by the measurement, and the disturbance is defined as the average loss of the quantum Fisher info…
One of the fundamental differences between classical and quantum mechanics is in the ways correlations can be distributed among the many parties that compose a system. While classical correlations can be shared among many subsystems, in general quantum correlations cannot be freely shared. This unique property is known as monogamy of quantum correlations. In this work, we study the monogamy properties of the correlated coherence for the l 1 -norm and relative entropy measures of coherence. For the l 1 -norm the correlated coherence is monogamous for a particular class of quantum states. For th…
A new type of complementary relation is found between locally accessible information and final average entanglement for given ensemble. It is also shown that in some well known distillation protocol, this complementary relation is optimally satisfied. We discuss the interesting trade-off between locally accessible information and distillable entanglement for some states.
Quantum resources lie at the core of quantum computation as they are responsible for the computational advantage in many tasks. The complementary relations are a pathway to understanding how the physical quantities are related. Here it was shown that there is a complementary relationship that evolves quantumness of a two qubits state and the degree of entanglement, respectively measured by Roughness and Concurrence. It was shown that there is a $\mathbb{R}^2$ surface that characterizes these quantities and can be understood as a projection of the Bloch Sphere. The distribution of states on the…
Uncertainty principle, a fundamental principle in quantum physics, has been studied intensively via various uncertainty inequalities. Here we derive an uncertainty equality in terms of linear entropy, and show that the sum of uncertainty in complementary local bases is equal to a fixed quantity. We also introduce a measure of correlation in a bipartite state, and show that the sum of correlations revealed in a full set of complementary bases is equal to the total correlation in the bipartite state. The surprising simple equality relations we obtain imply that the study on uncertainty principle…
Force-current structure in Markovian open quantum systems and its applications: geometric housekeeping-excess decomposition and thermodynamic trade-off relations
Uncertainty relations in quantum mechanics express bounds on our ability to simultaneously obtain knowledge about expectation values of non-commuting observables of a quantum system. They quantify trade-offs in accuracy between complementary pieces of information about the system. In Quantum multiparameter estimation, such trade-offs occur for the precision achievable for different parameters characterizing a density matrix: an uncertainty relation emerges between the achievable variances of the different estimators. This is in contrast to classical multiparameter estimation, where simultaneou…
We develop a unified, information theoretic interpretation of the number-phase complementarity that is applicable both to finite-dimensional (atomic) and infinite-dimensional (oscillator) systems, with number treated as a discrete Hermitian observable and phase as a continuous positive operator valued measure (POVM). The relevant uncertainty principle is obtained as a lower bound on {\it entropy excess}, $X$, the difference between the entropy of one variable, typically the number, and the knowledge of its complementary variable, typically the phase, where knowledge of a variable is defined as…
Entanglement and coherence are two essential quantum resources for quantum information processing. A natural question arises of whether there are direct link between them. And by thinking about this question, we propose a new measure for quantum state that contains concurrence and is called intrinsic concurrence. Interestingly, we discover that the intrinsic concurrence is always complementary to coherence. Note that the intrinsic concurrence is related to the concurrence of a special pure state ensemble. In order to explain the trade-off relation more intuitively, we apply it in some composit…
We address an information-theoretic approach to noise and disturbance in quantum measurements. Properties of corresponding probability distributions are characterized by means of both the Rényi and Tsallis entropies. Related information-theoretic measures of noise and disturbance are introduced. These definitions are based on the concept of conditional entropy. To motivate introduced measures, some important properties of the conditional Rényi and Tsallis entropies are discussed. There exist several formulations of entropic uncertainty relations for a pair of observables. Trade-off relations f…
We prove the following theorem about relative entropy of quantum states. "Substate theorem: Let rho and sigma be quantum states in the same Hilbert space with relative entropy S(rho|sigma) = Tr rho (log rho - log sigma) = c. Then for all epsilon > 0, there is a state rho' such that the trace distance ||rho' - rho||_t = Tr sqrt{(rho' - rho)^2} <= epsilon, and rho'/2^{O(c/epsilon^2)} <= sigma." It states that if the relative entropy of rho and sigma is small, then there is a state rho' close to rho, i.e. with small trace distance ||rho' - rho||_t, that when scaled down by a factor 2^{O(c)} `sits…
Many important properties of quantum channels are quantified by means of entropic functionals. Characteristics of such a kind are closely related to different representations of a quantum channel. In the Jamiołkowski-Choi representation, the given quantum channel is described by the so-called dynamical matrix. Entropies of the rescaled dynamical matrix known as map entropies describe a degree of introduced decoherence. Within the so-called natural representation, the quantum channel is formally posed by another matrix obtained as reshuffling of the dynamical matrix. The corresponding entropies…
We show that the mutually exclusive nature of classical and quantum correlations distributed in multi-party quantum systems can be characterized in terms of $q$-expectation. Using Tsallis-$q$ entropy and $q$-expectation, we first provide generalized definitions of classical and quantum correlations, and establish their trade-off relations in three-party quantum systems of arbitrary dimension with respect to $q$-expectation for $q\geq 1$. We also provide equivalence conditions for monogamy and polygamy inequalities of quantum entanglement and quantum discord distributed in three-party quantum s…
Spectral properties of an arbitrary matrix can be characterized by the entropy of its rescaled singular values. Any quantum operation can be described by the associated dynamical matrix or by the corresponding superoperator. The entropy of the dynamical matrix describes the degree of decoherence introduced by the map, while the entropy of the superoperator characterizes the a priori knowledge of the receiver of the outcome of a quantum channel Phi. We prove that for any map acting on a N--dimensional quantum system the sum of both entropies is not smaller than ln N. For any bistochastic map th…
It was recently shown by Harlow that any quantum error correcting code, satisfying the same complementary recovery properties as AdS/CFT, will obey a version of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. In his most general result, Harlow allowed the bulk algebras to have nontrivial center, which was necessary for the "area operator" in this Ryu-Takayanagi formula to be nontrivial. However, the boundary Hilbert space was still assumed to factorise into Hilbert spaces associated with complementary boundary regions. We extend this work to include more general boundary theories, such as gauge theories, where th…
Speed limit for classical stochastic Markov processes with discrete states is studied. We find that a trade-off inequality exists between the speed of the state transformation and the entropy production. The dynamical activity determines the time scale and plays a crucial role in the inequality. For systems with stationary current, a similar trade-off inequality with the Hatano-Sasa entropy production gives a much better bound on the speed of the state transformation. Our inequalities contain only physically well-defined quantities, and thus the physical picture of these inequalities is clear.

Reducing work fluctuation and dissipation in heat engines or, more generally, information heat engines that perform feedback control is vital to maximize their efficiency. The same problem arises when we attempt to maximize the efficiency of a given thermodynamic task that undergoes nonequilibrium processes for arbitrary initial and final states. We find that the most general trade-off relation between work fluctuation and dissipation applicable to arbitrary nonequilibrium processes is bounded from below by the information distance characterizing how far the system is from thermal equilibrium.…
We introduce an axiomatic approach for characterizing quantum conditional entropy. Our approach relies on two physically motivated axioms: monotonicity under conditional majorization and additivity. We show that these two axioms provide sufficient structure that enable us to derive several key properties applicable to all quantum conditional entropies studied in the literature. Specifically, we prove that any quantum conditional entropy must be negative on certain entangled states and must equal -log(d) on dxd maximally entangled states. We also prove the non-negativity of conditional entropy …
The continuity properties of the convex closure of the output entropy of infinite dimensional channels and their applications to the additivity problem are considered. The main result of this paper is the statement that the superadditivity of the convex closure of the output entropy for all finite dimensional channels implies the superadditivity of the convex closure of the output entropy for all infinite dimensional channels, which provides the analogous statements for the strong superadditivity of the EoF and for the additivity of the minimal output entropy. The above result also provides in…
Continuity properties of the output entropy of positive linear maps between Banach spaces of trace class operators are investigated with the special attention to the classes of quantum channels and operations. It is shown that finiteness of the output entropy of a positive map on the whole input state space implies its continuity. Sufficient conditions for this property expressed in terms of the Kraus representation of quantum channels and operations are presented. The characterization of a positive map "preserving continuity of the entropy" (in the sense that continuity of the entropy on a se…
We prove in the multimode scenario a fundamental relation between the Wehrl and the von Neumann entropy, stating that the minimum Wehrl entropy among all the quantum states with a given von Neumann entropy is achieved by thermal Gaussian states. We also prove that thermal Gaussian input states minimize the output von Neumann entropy of multimode quantum Gaussian attenuators, amplifiers and phase-contravariant channels among all the input states diagonal in some product basis and with a given entropy. This result constitutes a major step towards the proof of the same property for generic input …
