Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) is well known for providing detailed insight of extended sources thanks to the possibility of handling space resolved spectroscopic information. Simple and straightforward analysis such as single line fitting yield interesting results, although it might miss a more complete picture in many cases. Violent star forming regions, such as starburst galaxies, display very complex emission line profiles due to multiple kinematic components superposed in the line of sight. We perform a spatially resolved kinematical study of a single Green Pea (GP) galaxy, SDSSJ083843.63+385350.5, using a new method for analyzing Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of emission line spectra. The method considers the presence of multiple components in the emission-line profiles and makes use of a statistical indicator to determine the meaningful number of components to fit the observed profiles. We are able to identify three distinct kinematic features throughout the field and discuss their link with a rotating component, a strong outflow and a turbulent mixing layer. We also derive an updated star formation rate for \ourobj and discuss the link between the observed signatures of a large scale outflow and of the Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage detected in GP galaxies.
We analyze the spectra of $10$ Green Pea galaxies, previously studied by Henry et al. (2015), using a semi-analytical line transfer (SALT) model to interpret emission and absorption features observed in UV galactic spectra. We focus our analysis on various ionization states of silicon, associated with the cool ($\sim 10^4$ K) and warm ($\sim 10^5$ K) gas. By analyzing low-ionization lines, we study the relationships between the distribution and kinematics of the outflowing H I gas and the observed Ly$α$ escape fraction, $f_{esc}^{Lyα}$, as well as the Ly$α$ emission peak separation, $Δ_{peak}$…
By clearing neutral gas away from a young starburst, superwinds may regulate the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons from star-forming galaxies. However, models predict that superwinds may not launch in the most extreme, compact starbursts. We explore the role of outflows in generating low optical depths in the Green Peas (GPs), the only known star-forming population with several confirmed and candidate LyC-leaking galaxies. With Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra of 25 low-redshift GPs, including new observations of 13 of the most highly ionized GPs, we compare the kinematics of UV absorpt…
We report Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of the Ly$α$ emission and interstellar absorption lines in a sample of ten star-forming galaxies at $z\sim0.2$. Selected on the basis of high equivalent width optical emission lines, the sample, dubbed "Green Peas," make some of the best analogs for young galaxies in an early Universe. We detect Ly$α$ emission in all ten galaxies, and 9/10 show double-peaked line profiles suggestive of low HI column density. We measure Ly$α$/H$α$ flux ratios of 0.5-5.6, implying that 5% to 60% of Ly$α$ photons escape the galaxies. These …
Green Peas are nearby analogs of high-redshift Ly$α$-emitting galaxies. To probe their Ly$α$ escape, we study the spatial profiles of Ly$α$ and UV continuum emission of 24 Green Pea galaxies using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We extract the spatial profiles of Ly$α$ emission from their 2D COS spectra, and of UV continuum from both the 2D spectra and NUV images. The Ly$α$ emission shows more extended spatial profiles than the UV continuum in most Green Peas. The deconvolved Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) of the Ly$α$ spatial profile is about 2 to 4 time…
We explore the relation between the star formation rate surface density ($Σ$SFR) and the interstellar gas pressure for nearby compact starburst galaxies. The sample consists of 17 green peas and 19 Lyman break analogs. Green peas are nearby analogs of Ly$α$ emitters at high redshift and Lyman break analogs are nearby analogs of Lyman break galaxies at high redshift. We measure the sizes for green peas using Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) NUV images with a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 0.05$^{''}$. We estimate the gas thermal pressure in HII regions by $P = N_{total}Tk{…
Breaking the Blend: A multi-tracer kinematic decomposition method for IFS data applied to disentangling the AGN outflow and circumnuclear ring in NGC 5728 with JWST
Commonplace at every evolutionary stage, Multiple Protostellar Systems (MPSs) are thought to be formed through fragmentation, but it is unclear when and how. The youngest MPSs, which have not yet undergone much evolution, provide important constraints to this question. It is then of interest to disentangle early stage MPSs. In this letter we present the results of our work on VLA1623 using our observations and archival data from the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Our continuum and line observations trace VLA1623's components, outflow and envelope, revealing unexpected characteristics. We construct…
Context: High-resolution studies of class 0 protostars represent the key to constraining protostar formation models. VLA16234-2417 represents the prototype of class 0 protostars, and it has been recently identified as a triple non-coeval system. Aim: We aim at deriving the physical properties of the jets in VLA16234-2417 using tracers of shocked gas. Methods: ALMA Cycle 0 Early Science observations of CO(2-1) in the extended configuration are presented in comparison with previous SMA CO(3-2) and Herschel-PACS [OI}] 63 micron observations. Gas morphology and kinematics were analysed to constrai…
We present the results of the deep Subaru/FOCAS and Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopy for four spatially extended [O III]$λλ$4959,5007 sources, dubbed [O III] blobs, at $z=0.6-0.8$ that are originally pinpointed by large-area Subaru imaging surveys. The line diagnostics of the rest-frame optical lines suggests that only one [O III] blob, OIIIB-3, presents an AGN signature, indicating that hot gas of the rest of the [O III] blobs is heated by star formation. One of such star-forming [O III] blobs, OIIIB-4, at $z=0.838$ has an [O III] equivalent width of $845\pm27$ Å and an [O III] to [O II]$λλ$3726,372…
The multi-phase circumgalactic medium (CGM) arises within the complex environment around a galaxy, or collection of galaxies, and possibly originates from a wide range of physical mechanisms. In this paper, we attempt to disentangle the origins of these multi-phase structures and present a detailed analysis of the quasar field Q0122-003 field using Keck/KCWI galaxy observations and HST/COS spectra probing the CGM. Our re-analysis of this field shows that there are two galaxies associated with the absorption. We have discovered a dwarf galaxy, G_27kpc ($M_{\star}=10^{8.7}$ M$_{\odot}$), at z=0.…
Deep, high resolution spectroscopic observations have been obtained for six compact, strongly star-forming galaxies at redshift z~0.1-0.3, most of them also known as Green Peas. Remarkably, these galaxies show complex emission-line profiles in the spectral region including Hα, [NII]$λλ6548, 6584$ and [SII]$λλ6717, 6731$, consisting of the superposition of different kinematical components on a spatial extent of few kpc: a very broad line emission underlying more than one narrower component. For at least two of the observed galaxies some of these multiple components are resolved spatially in the…
Recent observations have discovered an escape of ionizing Lyman-continuum radiation from a population of compact, actively star-forming galaxies at redshift z~0.3, also known as "green peas". We here study the peculiar green pea Lyman-alpha (Lya) spectra, which are mostly double-peaked, unlike in any other galaxy sample. We select a sample of twelve archival green peas and we apply numerical radiative transfer models to reproduce the observed Lya spectral profiles, using the geometry of expanding, homogeneous spherical shells. We use ancillary optical and ultraviolet data to constrain the mode…
We present the first spatially resolved analysis of rest-frame optical and UV imaging and spectroscopy for a lensed galaxy at z = 2.39 hosting a Seyfert active galactic nucleus (AGN). Proximity to a natural guide star has enabled high signal-to-noise VLT SINFONI + adaptive optics observations of rest-frame optical diagnostic emission lines, which exhibit an underlying broad component with FWHM ~ 700 km/s in both the Balmer and forbidden lines. Measured line ratios place the outflow robustly in the region of the ionization diagnostic diagrams associated with AGN. This unique opportunity - combi…
We present results from a coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the type 1.8 Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13197-1627. This is a highly complex source, with strong contributions from relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk, neutral absorption and further reprocessing by more distant material, and ionised absorption from an outflow. We undertake a detailed spectral analysis combining the broadband coverage provided by $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ with a multi-epoch approach incorporating archival observations performed by $XMM$-$Newton$ and $Suzaku$. Our focus is on characterising t…
HH 223 is a knotty, wiggling nebular emission of ~30" length found in the L723 star-forming region. It lies projected onto the largest blueshifted lobe of the cuadrupolar CO outflow powered by a low-mass YSO system embedded in the core of L723. We analysed the physical conditions and kinematics along HH 223 with the aim of disentangling whether the emission arises from shock-excited, supersonic gas characteristic of a stellar jet, or is only tracing the wall cavity excavated by the CO outflow. We performed long-slit optical spectroscopy along HH 223, crossing all the bright knots (A to E) and …
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) display complex X-ray spectra which exhibit a variety of emission and absorption features, that are commonly interpreted as a combination of i) a relativistically smeared reflection component, resulting from the irradiation of an accretion disk by a compact hard X-ray source, ii) one or several warm/ionized absorption components produced by AGN-driven outflows crossing our line of sight, and iii) a non relativistic reflection component produced by more distant material. Disentangling these components via detailed model fitting can thus be used to constrain the blac…

We present ALMA (0.87~mm) and VLA (9~mm) observations toward OMC2-FIR4 and OMC2-FIR3 within the Orion integral-shaped filament that are thought to be the nearest regions of intermediate mass star formation. We characterize the continuum sources within these regions on $\sim$40~AU (0\farcs1) scales and associated molecular line emission at a factor of $\sim$30 better resolution than previous observations at similar wavelengths. We identify six compact continuum sources within OMC2-FIR4, four in OMC2-FIR3, and one additional source just outside OMC2-FIR4. This continuum emission is tracing the i…
Studying the coupling between the energy output produced by the central quasar and the host galaxy is fundamental to fully understand galaxy evolution. Quasar feedback is indeed supposed to dramatically affect the galaxy properties by depositing large amounts of energy and momentum into the ISM. In order to gain further insights on this process, we study the SEDs of sources at the brightest end of the quasar luminosity function, for which the feedback mechanism is supposed to be at its maximum. We model the rest-frame UV-to-FIR SEDs of 16 WISE-SDSS Selected Hyper-luminous (WISSH) quasars at 1.…
