We study the emergence of bosonic pairs in a system of two coupled one-dimensional fermionic chains subject to a gauge flux (two-leg flux ladder), with both attractive and repulsive interaction. In the presence of strong attractive nearest-neighbor interaction and repulsive next-to-nearest-neighbor interaction, the system crosses into a regime in which fermions form tightly bound pairs, which behave as bosonic entities. By means of numerical simulations based on the density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) method, we show in particular that in the strongly paired regime, the gauge flux induces a quantum phase transition of the Ising type from vortex density wave (VDW) to a charge density wave (CDW), characteristic of bosonic systems.
We study the effect of inter-ladder ferromagnetic (FM) coupling in spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with antiferromagnetic (AFM) legs and rungs interactions using the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo. We have compared the results with the experimental measurement on Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ cuprate which is the candidate for spin-1/2 AFM two-leg ladders with FM inter-ladder interaction. A remarkable asymptotic behavior of susceptibility is observed at very low temperature. In the absence of the magnetic field, thermodynamic behavior of an individual spin-1/2 two-leg ladder i…
We derive a Hamiltonian for a two-leg ladder which includes an arbitrary number of charge and spin interactions. To illustrate this Hamiltonian we consider two examples and use a renormalization group technique to evaluate the ground state phases. The first example is a two-leg ladder with zigzagged legs. We find that increasing the number of interactions in such a two-leg ladder may result in a richer phase diagram, particularly at half-filling where a few exotic phases are possible when the number of interactions are large and the angle of the zigzag is small. In the second example we determ…
We study the ground state of the 4-leg spin ladder using a dimer-RVB ansatz and the Lanczos method. Besides the well known resonance mechanism between valence bond configurations we find novel interference effects among nearby resonances.
Properties of the depleted Heisenberg spin ladder material series (C$_7$H$_{10}$N)$_2$Cu$_{1-z}$Zn$_{z}$Br$_4$ have been studied by the combination of magnetic measurements and neutron spectroscopy. Disorder-induced degrees of freedom lead to a specific magnetic response, described in terms of emergent strongly interacting "spin island" objects. The structure and dynamics of the spin islands is studied by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. This allows to determine their spatial shape and to observe their mutual interactions, manifested by strong spectral in-gap contributions.
Computational studies of basic models of strongly-correlated electron systems can provide guidance in the search for new materials as well as insight into the physical mechanisms responsible for their properties. Here, we illustrate this by examining what numerical computations have shown us about the 2-leg Hubbard ladder.
The ground state of the two-leg Heisenberg ladder is identified as an RVB type spin liquid, which is generated by Gutzwiller projection of tight-binding bands with flux pi per plaquet. Explicit trial wave functions for the magnon and hole excitations are formulated in terms of spinons and holons.
In order to shed light whether the `even-odd conjecture' (even numbers of legs will superconduct accompanied by a spin gap while odd ones do not) for correlated electrons in ladder systems, the pairing correlation is studied for the Hubbard model on a two- and three-leg ladders. We have employed both the weak-coupling renormalization group and the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for strong interactions. For the two-leg Hubbard ladder, a systematic QMC (with a controlled level spacings) has detected an enhanced pairing correlation, which is consistent with the weak-coupling prediction. We also…
Two-leg spin-1/2 ladder systems consisting of a ferromagnetic leg and an antiferromagnetic leg are considered where the spins on the legs interact through antiferromagnetic rung couplings $J_1$. These ladders can have two geometrical arrangements either zigzag or normal ladder and these systems are frustrated irrespective of their geometry. This frustration gives rise to incommensurate spin density wave, dimer and spin fluid phases in the ground state. The magnetization in the systems decreases linearly with $J^2_1$, and the systems show an incommensurate phase for $0.0<J_1<1.0$. The spin-spin…
Recent experiments have revealed the role of staggered Dzialoshinskii-Moriya interaction in the magnetized phase of an antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 two-leg ladder compound under a uniform magnetic field. We derive a low energy effective field theory describing a magnetized two-leg ladder with a weak staggered Dzialoshinskii-Moriya interaction. This theory predicts the persistence of the spin gap in the magnetized phase, in contrast to standard two-leg ladders, and the presence of bound states in the excitation spectrum. Such bound states are observable in Raman scattering measurements. These res…
We study the opening of the Haldane gap in two-leg and four-leg anisotropic spin ladders using bosonization and renormalization group methods, and we determine the phase diagram as a function of the interchain coupling and the relative anisotropy. It is found that the opening of the Haldane gap is qualitatively different for the two cases considered. For the two-leg ladder the Haldane gap opens for arbitrarily small interchain coupling, independent of the relative anisotropy, and the Haldane phase exists in a large region of parameter space. For the four-leg ladder the opening of the Haldane g…
Holes weakly doped into a four-leg \tj ladder bind in pairs. At dopings exceeding a critical doping of $δ_c\simeq {1/8}$ four hole clusters are observed to form in DMRG calculations. The symmetry of the ground state wavefunction does not change and we are able to reproduce this behavior qualitatively with an effective bosonic model in which the four-leg ladder is represented as two coupled two-leg ladders and hole-pairs are mapped on hard core bosons moving along and between these ladders. At lower dopings, $δ<δ_c$, a one dimensional bosonic representation for hole-pairs works and allows us to…
We suggest that under an increase of a magnetic field a spin-ladder with ferromagnetic legs does not pass without fail through an incommensurate phase but possibly in a straight way turns into a fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. The spin gap remains finite at the transition point. This scenario is demonstrated for the special spin-ladder model with exact singlet-rung ground state. We suppose that this kind of behavior realizes for the spin-ladder material (5IAP)_2CuBr_4*H_2O
Magnetization data of single crystalline La4Sr10Cu24O41 are presented. In this compound, doped spin chains and undoped spin ladders are realized. The magnetization, at low temperatures, is governed by the chain subsystem with a finite interchain coupling which leads to short range antiferromagnetic spin correlations. At higher temperatures, the response of the chains can be estimated in terms of a Curie-Weiss law. For the ladders, we apply the low-temperature approximation for a S=1/2 2-leg spin ladder by Troyer et al.
Using the Lanczos method we determine the phase diagram of the 2-leg AF-Heisenberg ladder with alternating dimerization. It consists of a resonating valence bond phase and a dimer phase separated by a critical line. Our results are in good agreement with previous conjectures obtained with the non linear sigma model.
We examine the magnetic-field-induced criticality of phase boundary near saturation field $H_{\mathrm{c}}$ in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic (FM)-leg ladder 3-Cl-4-F-V [=3-(3-chloro-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], the predominant interactions of which arise from FM chains (strong-leg type). Critical temperatures were precisely determined through dc magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric effect measurements. The criticality of 3-Cl-4-F-V is characterized by a linear phase boundary with respect to $H_{\mathrm{c}}-H$ near $H\,=\,H_{\mathrm{c}}$. This behavior is similar to that of an…
Recently, conductivity measurements were performed on the hole-doped two-leg ladder material Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41}. In this work, we calculate the conductivity for doped two-leg ladders using a model of hole-pairs forming a strongly correlated liquid - a single component Luttinger liquid - in the presence of disorder. Quantum interference effects are handled using renormalization group methods. We find that our model can account for the low energy features of the experimental results. However, at higher energies the experiments show deviations from the predictions of this model. Using the…
We study critical singularities in the d-wave-like superconducting phase of the hole-doped Hubbard model of repulsively interacting electrons, defined on a two-leg ladder, induced by a magnetic field applied parallel to the ladder plane. We argue that, provided the lowest energy spin excitations in doped ladders carry as well charge quantum numbers, the low temperature thermodynamic quantities, such as specific heat coefficient and magnetic susceptibility will show logarithmic singularities in quantum critical regime. This behavior is in drastic contrast with the magnetic field induced critica…
Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure spin excitations in fully deuterated single crystal samples of the strong-leg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 spin ladder compound (C$_7$H$_{10}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$. Sharp resolution-limited magnons are observed across the entire one-dimensional Brillouin zone. The results validate the previously proposed {\it symmetric} spin ladder model and provide a reliable estimate of the relevant exchange interactions.
The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) at the V sites in CaV2O5 was measured. The result was compared with the calculation for the two-leg ladder with the strong-coupling expansion. We found a good agreement on the temperature and magnetic field dependence but a discrepancy between the exchange parameters deduced from 1/T1 and the magnetic susceptibility.
We study the ground state phase diagram of a two-leg spin ladder with anisotropic ferromagnetic leg couplings under the influence of a symmetry breaking transverse magnetic field by the exact diagonalization technique. In the case of antiferromagnetic coupling between legs we identified two phase transitions in the plane of magnetic field vs interchain coupling strength. The first one corresponds to the transition from the gapped rung-singlet phase to the gapped stripe-ferromagnetic phase. The second one represents the transition from the gapped stripe-ferromagnetic phase into the fully polari…
We theoretically study a spin-spin correlation enhanced by non-magnetic impurities in a frustrated two-leg spin ladder. The frustration is introduced by the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction in the leg direction in the antiferromagnetic two-leg spin ladder. The spin-spin correlation function around impurity site is calculated by the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We find that the spin-spin correlation is enhanced around impurity site with the wavenumber reflecting the frustration. As increasing the frustration, the wavenumber is shifted from commensurate to inco…
We calculate the phonon-assisted optical-absorption spectra in SrCu_2O_3 two-leg spin-ladder systems. The results for two models proposed for SrCu_2O_3 are compared. In the model including the effects of a cyclic four-spin interaction, the shoulder structure appears at 978 cm^{-1} and the peak appears at 1975 cm^{-1} in the spectrum for polarization of the electric field parallel to the legs. In the other model which describes a pure two-leg ladder, the peak appears around the lower edge of the spectrum at 1344 cm^{-1}. The feature can be effective in determining the proper model for SrCu_2O_3…
We present magnetic suscceptibility and heat capacity data on a new S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder compound BiCu2PO6. From our susceptibility analysis, we find that the leg coupling J1/k_B is ~ 80 K and the ratio of the rung to leg coupling J2/J1 ~ 0.9. We present the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity of a two-leg ladder. The spin-gap Delta/k_B =3 4 K obtained from the heat capacity agrees very well with that obtained from the magnetic susceptibility. Significant inter-ladder coupling is suggested from the susceptibility analysis. The hopping integrals determined using Nth order muffin tin…
The quantum phases of 2-leg spin-1/2 ladders with skewed rungs are obtained using exact diagonalization of systems with up to 26 spins and by density matrix renormalization group calculations to 500 spins. The ladders have isotropic antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange $J_2 > 0$ between first neighbors in the legs, variable isotropic AF exchange $J_1$ between some first neighbors in different legs, and an unpaired spin per odd-membered ring when $J_1 \gg J_2$. Ladders with skewed rungs and variable $J_1$ have frustrated AF interactions leading to multiple quantum phases: AF at small $J_1$, either F…
Within the t-J model, the optical and transport properties of the doped two-leg ladder antiferromagnet are studied based on the fermion-spin theory. It is shown that the optical and transport properties of the doped two-leg ladder antiferromagnet are mainly governed by the holon scattering. The low energy peak in the optical conductivity is located at a finite energy, while the resistivity exhibits a crossover from the high temperature metallic-like behavior to the low temperature insulating-like behavior, which are consistent with the experiments.
We have measured the magnetization of the organic compound BIP-BNO (3,5'-bis(N-tert-butylaminoxyl)-3',5-dibromobiphenyl) up to 76 T where the magnetization is saturated. The S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg spin-ladder model accounts for the obtained experimental data regarding the magnetization curve, which is clarified using the quantum Monte Carlo method. The exchange constants on the rung and the side rail of the ladder are estimated to be J(rung)/kB = 65.7 K and J(leg)/kB = 14.1 K, respectively, deeply in the strong coupling region: J(rung)/J(leg) > 1.
Using the transfer-matrix DMRG method, we study the nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T_1 in the two-leg s=1/2 ladder as function of the inter-chain (J_{\perp}) and intra-chain (J_{|}) couplings. In particular, we separate the q_y=0 and πcontributions and show that the later contribute significantly to the copper relaxation rate ^{63}(1/T_1) in the experimentally relevant coupling and temperature range. We compare our results to both theoretical predictions and experimental measures on ladder materials.
We study a two-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder in the presence of a staggered magnetic field. We consider two parameter regimes: strong (weak) coupling along the legs and weak (strong) coupling along the rungs. In both cases, the staggered field drives the Haldane spin-liquid phase of the ladder towards a Gaussian quantum criticality. In a generalized spin ladder with a non-Haldane, spontaneously dimerized phase, the staggered magnetic field induces an Ising quantum critical regime. In the vicinity of the critical lines, we derive low-energy effective field theories and use these descrip…
We study current-current correlations in the three-band Hubbard model for two-leg CuO ladders using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We find that these correlations decrease exponentially with distance for low doping but as a power law for higher doping. Their pattern is compatible with the circulating current (CC) phase which Varma has proposed to explain the pseudo-gaped metallic phase in underdoped high-temperature superconductors. However, for model parameters leading to a realistic ground state in the undoped ladder, the current fluctuations decay faster than the d-wave-li…
We study the magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped quantum phase that has no magnetic long-range order into a gapless phase in the spin-1/2 ladder compound bis(2,3-dimethylpyridinium) tetrabromocuprate (DIMPY). At temperatures below about 1 K, the specific heat in the gapless phase attains an asymptotic linear temperature dependence, characteristic of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Inelastic neutron scattering and the specific heat measurements in both phases are in good agreement with theoretical calculations, demonstrating that DIMPY is the first model material for an S…
In doped two-leg spin ladder systems, holes are expected to form charged bosonic pairs. We study charge transport in this system in the temperature range where the bosons can be described as weakly interacting quasi-particles. We consider boson-phonon and boson-impurity scattering processes. We suggest that due to the Ioffe-Regel resistivity saturation mechanism, the resistivity may exhibit a local maximum at intermediate temperatures. We propose that this may explain a similar feature found in recent experimental results.
In this work, we study N-leg Kondo ladders at half-filling through the density matrix renormalization group. We found non-zero spin and charge gaps for any finite number of legs and Kondo coupling $J>0$. We also show evidence of the existence of a quantum critical point in the two dimensional Kondo lattice model, in agreement with previous works. Based on the binding energy of two holes, we did not find evidence of superconductivity in the 2D Kondo lattice model close to half-filling.
Single-particle diagonal and off-diagonal Green's functions of a 2-leg t-J ladder at 1/8-doping are investigated by Exact Diagonalisations techniques. A numerically tractable expression for the superconducting gap is proposed and the frequency dependence of the real and imaginary parts of the gap are determined. The role of the low-energy gapped spin modes whose energies are computed by a (one-step) Contractor Renormalization procedure are discussed.
We investigate, through the density-matrix renormalization group and the Lanczos technique, the possibility of a two-leg Kondo ladder present an incommensurate orbital order. Our results indicate a staggered short-range orbital order at half-filling. Away from half-filling our data are consistent with an incommensurate quasi-long-range orbital order. We also observed that an interaction between the localized spins enhances the rung-rung current correlations.
We report the results of numerical calculations of rung-rung current correlations on a 2-leg t-J ladder with J/t=0.35 for dopings x=0.125 and x=0.19. We find that the amplitude of these correlations decays exponentially. We argue that this can be understood within a bosonization framework in terms of the pinned phase variables associated with a C1SO phase with d_{x^2-y^2}-like power law pairing correlations.
We report density-matrix renormalization group calculations of spin gaps in the quarter-filled correlated two-leg rectangular ladder with bond-dimerization along the legs of the ladder. In the small rung-coupling region, dimerization along the leg bonds can lead to large enhancement of the spin gap. Electron-electron interactions further enhance the spin gap, which is nonzero for all values of the rung electron hopping and for arbitrarily small bond-dimerization. Very large spin gaps, as are found experimentally in quarter-filled band organic charge-transfer solids with coupled pairs of quasi-…
Using a functional renormalization group method, we obtain the phase diagram of the two-leg ladder system within the Holstein-Hubbard model, which includes both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. Our renormalization group technique allows us to analyze the problem for both weak and strong electron-phonon coupling. We show that, in contrast results from conventional weak coupling studies, electron-phonon interactions can dominate electron-electron interactions because of retardation effects.
The behavior of a two leg Hubbard ladder in the presence of a magnetic field is studied by means of Abelian bosonization. We predict the appearance of a new (doping dependent) plateau in the magnetization curve of a doped 2-leg spin ladder in a wide range of couplings. We also discuss the extension to N-leg Hubbard ladders.
We present evidence for an exotic gapless insulating phase of hard-core bosons on multi-leg ladders with a density commensurate with the number of legs. In particular, we study in detail a model of bosons moving with direct hopping and frustrating ring exchange on a 3-leg ladder at $ν=1/3$ filling. For sufficiently large ring exchange, the system is insulating along the ladder but has two gapless modes and power law transverse density correlations at incommensurate wave vectors. We propose a determinantal wave function for this phase and find excellent comparison between variational Monte Carl…
The physical properties of the edge states of the cut two-leg spin ladder are investigated by means of the bosonization approach. By carefully treating boundary conditions, we derive the existence of spin-1/2 edge states in the spin ladder with a ferromagnetic rung exchange and for the open spin-1 Heisenberg chain. In contrast, such states are absent in the antiferromagnetic rung coupling case. The approach, based on a mapping onto decoupled semi-infinite off-critical Ising models, allows us to compute several physical quantities of interest. In particular, we determine the magnetization and d…
We argue that the Raman intensity in a spin S two-leg spin-ladder has a pseudo-resonance peak, whose width is very small at large S. The pseudo-resonance originates from the existence of a local minimum in the magnon excitation spectrum, and is located slightly below twice the magnon energy at the minimum. The physics behind the peak is similar to the excitonic scenario for the neutron and Raman resonances in a d-wave superconductor.
The gap function phi(k,omega), determined from a Lanczos calculation for a doped 2-leg t-J ladder, is used to provide insight into the spatial and temporal structure of the pairing interaction. It implies that this interaction is a local near-neighbor coupling which is retarded. The onset frequency of the interaction is set by the energy of an S=1 magnon-hole-pair and it is spread out over a frequency region of order the bandwith.
Ground-state and finite-temperature properties of $S=1/2$ Heisenberg ladders with a ferromagnetic leg, an antiferromagnetic leg, and antiferromagnetic rungs are studied. It is shown that a partial ferrimagnetic phase extends over a wide parameter range in the ground state. The numerical results are supported by an analytical calculation based on a mapping onto the nonlinear $σ$ model and a perturbation calculation from the strong-rung limit. It is shown that the partial ferrimagnetic state is a spontaneously magnetized Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid with incommensurate magnetic correlation, which …
In previous studies, we proposed a scaling ansatz for electron-electron interactions under renormalization group transformation. With the inclusion of phonon-mediated interactions, we show that the scaling ansatz, characterized by the divergent logarithmic length $l_d$ and a set of renormalization-group exponents, also works rather well. The superconducting phases in a doped two-leg ladder are studied and classified by these renormalization-group exponents as demonstration. Finally, non-trivial constraints among the exponents are derived and explained.
We have proposed the plaquette-singlet solid (PSS) ground state for the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg ladder. Based on the PSS picture, we discuss the correspondence of the PSS state to the valence-bond solid (VBS) state of the ground state of spin-2 chain by introducing an appropriate composite spin picture. When the bond alternation is introduced, there occur quantum phase transitions and each phase can be identified with that in the dimerized spin-2 chain. Furthermore, we argue that the VBS picture of spin-2S chain can be applied to the ground state of spin-S two-leg ladder.
We demonstrate the existence of an insulating phase in the three-legged Hubbard ladder at two-thirds filling. In this phase chargons are bound because the physics within a unit cell favors the formation of triplets. The resultant moments lead to a ground state in the Haldane phase, a symmetry protected topological state of matter. In this purely fermionic model, reflection is protecting but time reversal and dihedral symmetries are not, in contrast to spin models.
The charge carrier dynamics of doped electronic correlated systems on ladders and chains, subject to ultrafast photoirradiation, is investigated using the time-dependent Lanczos method. The time-resolved optical conductivity and the temporal profiles of other relevant quantities, including the doublon number, the kinetic energy, and the interaction energy, are calculated. Two competitive factors that can influence the transient charge carrier dynamics are identified as the thermal effect and the charge effect. We demonstrate that the analysis of their interplay can provide an intuitive way to …
A spin-1/2 frustrated two-leg ladder with four-spin exchange interaction is studied by quantized Berry phases. We found that the Berry phase successfully characterizes the Haldane phase in addition to the rung-singlet phase, and the dominant vector-chirality phase. The Hamiltonian of the Haldane phase is topologically identical to the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. Decoupled models connected to the dominant vector-chirality phase revealed that the local object identified by the non-trivial ($π$) Berry phase is the direct product of two diagonal singlets.
The zero-field excitation spectrum of the strong-leg spin ladder (C$_7$H$_10$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (DIMPY) is studied with a neutron time-of-flight technique. The spectrum is decomposed into its symmetric and asymmetric parts with respect to the rung momentum and compared with theoretical results obtained by the density matrix renormalization group method. Additionally, the calculated dynamical correlations are shown for a wide range of rung and leg coupling ratios in order to point out the evolution of arising excitations, as e.g. of the two-magnon bound state from the strong to the weak coupling li…
The dynamics of holon-doublon pairs is studied in Hubbard two-leg ladders using the time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group method. We find that the geometry of the two-leg ladder, that is qualitatively different from a one-dimensional chain due to the presence of a spin-gap, strongly affects the propagation of a doublon-holon pair. Two distinct regimes are identified. For weak inter-leg coupling, the results are qualitatively similar to the case of the propagation previously reported in Hubbard chains, with only a renormalization of parameters. More interesting is the case of stro…
We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirali…
The effect of a ring exchange on doped two-leg ladders is investigated combining exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations. We focus on the nature and weights of the low energy magnetic excitations and on superconducting pairing. The stability with respect to this cyclic term of a remarkable resonant mode originating from a hole pair-magnon bound state is examined. We also find that, near the zero-doping critical point separating rung-singlet and dimerized phases, doping reopens a spin gap.
We study the spin ordering within the 3-leg ladders present in the oxyborate Fe(3)O(2)BO(3) consisting of localized classical spins interacting with conduction electrons (one electron per rung). We also consider the competition with antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions to determine the magnetic phase diagram. Beside a ferromagnetic phase we find (i) a phase with ferromagnetic rungs ordered antiferromagnetically (ii) a zig-zag canted spin ordering along the legs. We also determine the induced charge ordering within the different phases and the interplay with lattice instability. Our mod…
We study the magnetization process of the $S=1$ Heisenberg model on a two-leg ladder with farther neighbor spin-exchange interaction. We consider the interaction that couples up to the next-nearest neighbor rungs and find an exactly solvable regime where the ground states become product states. The next-nearest neighbor interaction tends to stabilize magnetization plateaus at multiples of 1/6. In most of the exactly solvable regime, a single magnetization curve shows two series of plateaus with different periodicities.
Asymmetric two-leg Hubbard ladders with different on-site interactions $U_y$ and hoppings $t_y$ on each leg are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalizations. The pairing found in symmetric ladders is robust against the introduction of the leg asymmetry. When studying pairing, one-band Hubbard ladder models are better described as one-dimensional correlated two-band models than as sublattices of higher dimensional systems. The asymmetric Hubbard ladder provides us with a simple model for studying pairing in the crossover regime between charge tra…
We investigate the effects of quenched disorder, in the form of site and bond dilution, on the physics of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on even-leg ladders. Site dilution is found to prune rung singlets and thus create localized moments which interact via a random, unfrustrated network of effective couplings, realizing a random-exchange Heisenberg model (REHM) in one spatial dimension. This system exhibits a power-law diverging correlation length as the temperature decreases. Contrary to previous claims, we observe that the scaling exponent is non-universal, i.e., doping depen…
We study two-leg Heisenberg ladder with four-spin cyclic interaction using the (dynamical) density-matrix renormalization group method. We demonstrate the dependence of the low-lying excitations in the spin wave, staggered dimer order, and scalar-chirality order structure factors on the four-spin cyclic interaction. We find that the cyclic interaction enhances spin-spin correlations with wave vector around momentum $(q_x,q_y)=(\fracπ{2},0)$. Also, the presence of long-range order in the staggered dimer and scalar-chirality phases is confirmed by a $δ$-function peak contribution of the structur…
Momentum dependent charge excitations of a two-leg ladder are investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of (La,Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41. In contrast to the case of a square lattice, momentum dependence of the Mott gap excitation of the ladder exhibits little change upon hole-doping, indicating the formation of hole pairs. Theoretical calculation based on a Hubbard model qualitatively explains this feature. In addition, experimental data shows intraband excitation as continuum intensity below the Mott gap and it appears at all the momentum transfers simultaneously. The intensity of the intraba…
We consider the isotropic spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with the dominant spatially modulated rung exchanges. We study the effect of a uniform magnetic field on the ground state phase diagram of the model using the perturbation theory and the numerical Lanczos method. The ground state phase diagram consists of two gapless Luttinger liquid (LL) and three gapped phases. Numerically, we calculate the concurrence between two spins and entanglement entropy between legs. Numerical experiment shows that in principle the gapless LL phases are different. In the first LL phase, only spins on rungs are entang…
New phases with broken discrete Ising symmetries are uncovered in quantum materials with strong electronic correlations. The two-leg ladder cuprate \textbf{$Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}$} hosts a very rich phase diagram where, upon hole doping, the system exhibits a spin liquid state ending to an intriguing ordered magnetic state at larger $Ca$ content. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we report here the existence of short range magnetism in this material for two $Ca$ contents, whose origin cannot be ascribed to Cu spins. This magnetism develops exclusively within the two-leg ladders with …
