Training a Siamese architecture for re-identification with a large number of identities is a challenging task due to the difficulty of finding relevant negative samples efficiently. In this work we present Bag of Negatives (BoN), a method for accelerated and improved training of Siamese networks that scales well on datasets with a very large number of identities. BoN is an efficient and loss-independent method, able to select a bag of high quality negatives, based on a novel online hashing strategy.
In this paper, we present a novel dataset named MVB (Multi View Baggage) for baggage ReID task which has some essential differences from person ReID. The features of MVB are three-fold. First, MVB is the first publicly released large-scale dataset that contains 4519 baggage identities and 22660 annotated baggage images as well as its surface material labels. Second, all baggage images are captured by specially-designed multi-view camera system to handle pose variation and occlusion, in order to obtain the 3D information of baggage surface as complete as possible. Third, MVB has remarkable inte…
Matching pedestrians across multiple camera views, known as human re-identification, is a challenging research problem that has numerous applications in visual surveillance. With the resurgence of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), several end-to-end deep Siamese CNN architectures have been proposed for human re-identification with the objective of projecting the images of similar pairs (i.e. same identity) to be closer to each other and those of dissimilar pairs to be distant from each other. However, current networks extract fixed representations for each image regardless of other images …
Video anomaly detection is recently formulated as a multiple instance learning task under weak supervision, in which each video is treated as a bag of snippets to be determined whether contains anomalies. Previous efforts mainly focus on the discrimination of the snippet itself without modeling the temporal dynamics, which refers to the variation of adjacent snippets. Therefore, we propose a Discriminative Dynamics Learning (DDL) method with two objective functions, i.e., dynamics ranking loss and dynamics alignment loss. The former aims to enlarge the score dynamics gap between positive and n…
Architectures based on siamese networks with triplet loss have shown outstanding performance on the image-based similarity search problem. This approach attempts to discriminate between positive (relevant) and negative (irrelevant) items. However, it undergoes a critical weakness. Given a query, it cannot discriminate weakly relevant items, for instance, items of the same type but different color or texture as the given query, which could be a serious limitation for many real-world search applications. Therefore, in this work, we present a quadruplet-based architecture that overcomes the afore…

Medical Image Retrieval is a challenging field in Visual information retrieval, due to the multi-dimensional and multi-modal context of the underlying content. Traditional models often fail to take the intrinsic characteristics of data into consideration, and have thus achieved limited accuracy when applied to medical images. The Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) is a technique that can be used to effectively represent intrinsic image features in vector space, so that applications like image classification and similar-image search can be optimized. In this paper, we present a MedIR approach based on …

Trackers based on Siamese network have shown tremendous success, because of their balance between accuracy and speed. Nevertheless, with tracking scenarios becoming more and more sophisticated, most existing Siamese-based approaches ignore the addressing of the problem that distinguishes the tracking target from hard negative samples in the tracking phase. The features learned by these networks lack of discrimination, which significantly weakens the robustness of Siamese-based trackers and leads to suboptimal performance. To address this issue, we propose a simple yet efficient hard negative s…

In visual Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM), detecting loop closures has been an important but difficult task. Currently, most solutions are based on the bag-of-words approach. Yet the possibility of deep neural network application to this task has not been fully explored due to the lack of appropriate architecture design and of sufficient training data. In this paper we demonstrate the applicability of deep neural networks by addressing both issues. Specifically we show that a feature pyramid Siamese neural network can achieve state-of-the-art performance on pairwise loop closure d…
In this paper, we propose a deep convolutional neural network for learning the embeddings of images in order to capture the notion of visual similarity. We present a deep siamese architecture that when trained on positive and negative pairs of images learn an embedding that accurately approximates the ranking of images in order of visual similarity notion. We also implement a novel loss calculation method using an angular loss metrics based on the problems requirement. The final embedding of the image is combined representation of the lower and top-level embeddings. We used fractional distance…

Designing an end-to-end deep learning network to match the biometric features with limited training samples is an extremely challenging task. To address this problem, we propose a new way to design an end-to-end deep CNN framework i.e., PVSNet that works in two major steps: first, an encoder-decoder network is used to learn generative domain-specific features followed by a Siamese network in which convolutional layers are pre-trained in an unsupervised fashion as an autoencoder. The proposed model is trained via triplet loss function that is adjusted for learning feature embeddings in a way th…

Siamese networks have drawn great attention in visual tracking because of their balanced accuracy and speed. However, the backbone networks used in Siamese trackers are relatively shallow, such as AlexNet [18], which does not fully take advantage of the capability of modern deep neural networks. In this paper, we investigate how to leverage deeper and wider convolutional neural networks to enhance tracking robustness and accuracy. We observe that direct replacement of backbones with existing powerful architectures, such as ResNet [14] and Inception [33], does not bring improvements. The main r…
Contrastive Self-supervised Learning (CSL) is a practical solution that learns meaningful visual representations from massive data in an unsupervised approach. The ordinary CSL embeds the features extracted from neural networks onto specific topological structures. During the training progress, the contrastive loss draws the different views of the same input together while pushing the embeddings from different inputs apart. One of the drawbacks of CSL is that the loss term requires a large number of negative samples to provide better mutual information bound ideally. However, increasing the nu…

Self-supervised learning has shown its great potential to extract powerful visual representations without human annotations. Various works are proposed to deal with self-supervised learning from different perspectives: (1) contrastive learning methods (e.g., MoCo, SimCLR) utilize both positive and negative samples to guide the training direction; (2) asymmetric network methods (e.g., BYOL, SimSiam) get rid of negative samples via the introduction of a predictor network and the stop-gradient operation; (3) feature decorrelation methods (e.g., Barlow Twins, VICReg) instead aim to reduce the redu…

In this paper we propose a novel framework for learning local image descriptors in a discriminative manner. For this purpose we explore a siamese architecture of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), with a Hinge embedding loss on the L2 distance between descriptors. Since a siamese architecture uses pairs rather than single image patches to train, there exist a large number of positive samples and an exponential number of negative samples. We propose to explore this space with a stochastic sampling of the training set, in combination with an aggressive mining strategy over both the positi…
Histopathology image analysis can be considered as a Multiple instance learning (MIL) problem, where the whole slide histopathology image (WSI) is regarded as a bag of instances (i.e, patches) and the task is to predict a single class label to the WSI. However, in many real-life applications such as computational pathology, discovering the key instances that trigger the bag label is of great interest because it provides reasons for the decision made by the system. In this paper, we propose a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model that addresses the primary task of a bag classification o…

Contrastive methods have led a recent surge in the performance of self-supervised representation learning (SSL). Recent methods like BYOL or SimSiam purportedly distill these contrastive methods down to their essence, removing bells and whistles, including the negative examples, that do not contribute to downstream performance. These "non-contrastive" methods work surprisingly well without using negatives even though the global minimum lies at trivial collapse. We empirically analyze these non-contrastive methods and find that SimSiam is extraordinarily sensitive to dataset and model size. In …

We present an accurate, fast and efficient method for segmentation and muscle mask propagation in 3D freehand ultrasound data, towards accurate volume quantification. A deep Siamese 3D Encoder-Decoder network that captures the evolution of the muscle appearance and shape for contiguous slices is deployed. We uses it to propagate a reference mask annotated by a clinical expert. To handle longer changes of the muscle shape over the entire volume and to provide an accurate propagation, we devise a Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory module. Also, to train our model with a minimal amount of train…
