We develop a kinetic theory for {the electron strahl, a beam of energetic electrons which propagate} from the sun along the Parker-spiral-shaped magnetic field lines. By assuming a Maxwellian electron distribution function in the near-sun region where the plasma is collisional, we derive the strahl distribution function at larger heliospheric distances. We consider the two most important mechanisms that broaden the strahl: Coulomb collisions and interactions with oblique ambient whistler turbulence (anomalous diffusion). We propose that the energy regimes where these mechanisms are important are separated by an approximate threshold, ${\cal E}_c$; for the electron kinetic energies ${\cal E}<{\cal E}_c$ the strahl width is mostly governed by Coulomb collisions, while for ${\cal E}>{\cal E}_c$ by interactions with the whistlers. The Coulomb broadening decreases as the electron energy increases; the whistler-dominated broadening, on the contrary, increases with energy and it can lead to efficient isotropization of energetic electrons and to formation of the electron halo. The threshold energy ${\cal E}_c$ is relatively high in the regions closer to the sun, and it gradually decreases with the distance, implying that the anomalous diffusion becomes progressively more important at large heliospheric distances. At $1$ AU, we estimate the energy threshold to be about ${\cal E}_c\sim 200\,{\rm eV}$.
Solar wind electron velocity distributions at 1 au consist of a thermal "core" population and two suprathermal populations: "halo" and "strahl". The core and halo are quasi-isotropic, whereas the strahl typically travels radially outwards along the parallel and/or anti-parallel direction with respect to the interplanetary magnetic field. With Cluster-PEACE data, we analyse energy and pitch angle distributions and use machine learning techniques to provide robust classifications of these solar wind populations. Initially, we use unsupervised algorithms to classify halo and strahl differential e…
We present a kinetic stability analysis of the solar wind electron distribution function consisting of the Maxwellian core and the magnetic-field aligned strahl, a superthermal electron beam propagating away from the sun. We use an electron strahl distribution function obtained as a solution of a weakly collisional drift-kinetic equation, representative of a strahl affected by Coulomb collisions but unadulterated by possible broadening from turbulence. This distribution function is essentially non-Maxwellian and varies with the heliospheric distance. The stability analysis is performed with th…
Electron velocity distributions in the solar wind are known to have field-aligned skewness, which has been characterized by the presence of secondary populations such as the halo and strahl. Skewness may provide energy for the excitation of electromagnetic instabilities, such as the whistler heat-flux instability (WHFI), that may play an important role in regulating the electron heat-flux in the solar wind. Here we use kinetic theory to analyze the stability of the WHFI in a solar-wind-like plasma where solar wind core, halo and strahl electrons are described as a superposition of two distribu…
We investigate the scattering of strahl electrons by microinstabilities as a mechanism for creating the electron halo in the solar wind. We develop a mathematical framework for the description of electron-driven microinstabilities and discuss the associated physical mechanisms. We find that an instability of the oblique fast-magnetosonic/whistler (FM/W) mode is the best candidate for a microinstability that scatters strahl electrons into the halo. We derive approximate analytic expressions for the FM/W instability threshold in two different $β_{\mathrm c}$ regimes, where $β_{\mathrm c}$ is the…
We analyze the micro-kinetic stability of the electron strahl in the solar wind depending on heliocentric distance. The oblique fast-magnetosonic/whistler (FM/W) instability has emerged in the literature as a key candidate mechanism for the effective scattering of the electron strahl into the electron halo population. Using data from Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Helios, we compare the measured strahl properties with the analytical thresholds for the oblique FM/W instability in the low- and high-$β_{\parallel c}$ regimes, where $β_{\parallel c}$ is the ratio of the core parallel thermal pressur…
We develop and apply a bespoke fitting routine to a large volume of solar wind electron distribution data measured by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) over its first five orbits, covering radial distances from 0.13 to 0.5 au. We characterise the radial evolution of the electron core, halo and strahl populations in the slow solar wind during these orbits. The fractional densities of these three electron populations provide evidence for the growth of the combined suprathermal halo and strahl populations from 0.13 to 0.17 au. Moreover, the growth in the halo population is not matched by a decrease of the…
The role of solar wind expansion in generating whistler waves is investigated using the EB-iPic3D code, which models solar wind expansion self-consistently within a fully kinetic semi-implicit approach. The simulation is initialized with an electron velocity distribution function modeled after Parker Solar Probe observations during its first perihelion at 0.166 au, consisting of a dense core and an anti-sunward strahl. This distribution function is initially stable with respect to kinetic instabilities. Expansion drives the solar wind into successive regimes where whistler heat flux instabilit…
In collision-poor plasmas from space, e.g., solar wind or stellar outflows, the heat-flux carried by the strahl or beaming electrons is expected to be regulated by the self-generated instabilities. Recently, simultaneous field and particle observations have indeed revealed enhanced whistler-like fluctuations in the presence of counter-beaming populations of electrons, connecting these fluctuations to the whistler heat-flux instability (WHFI). This instability is predicted only for limited conditions of electron beam-plasmas, and was not captured in numerical simulations yet. In this letter we …
Observations of plasma waves by the Fields Suite and of electrons by the Solar Wind Electrons Alphas and Protons Investigation (SWEAP) on Parker Solar Probe provide strong evidence for pitch angle scattering of strahl-energy electrons by narrowband whistler-mode waves at radial distances less than ~0.3 AU. We present two example intervals of a few hours that include 8 waveform captures with whistler-mode waves and 26 representative electron distributions that are examined in detail. Two were narrow; 17 were clearly broadened, and 8 were very broad. The two with narrow strahl occurred when ther…

A statistical analysis of 15,210 electron velocity distribution function (VDF) fits, observed within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks by the $Wind$ spacecraft near 1 AU, is presented. This is the second in a three-part series on electron VDFs near IP shocks. The electron velocity moment statistics for the dense, low energy core, tenuous, hot halo, and field-aligned beam/strahl are a statistically significant list of values illustrated with both histograms and tabular lists for reference and baselines in future work. The beam/strahl fit results in the upstream are currently the clo…
The hot beaming (or strahl) electrons responsible for the main electron heat-flux in the solar wind are believed to be self-regulated by the electromagnetic beaming instabilities, also known as the heat-flux instabilities. Here we report the first quasi-linear theoretical approach of the whistler unstable branch able to characterize the long-term saturation of the instability as well as the relaxation of the electron velocity distributions. The instability saturation is not solely determined by the drift velocities, which undergo only a minor relaxation, but mainly from a concurrent interactio…
PIC simulation of current-driven solar type III radiation and whistler waves in an electron core-strahl plasma: Relevance to PSP and other space observations
Using the Parker Solar Probe FIELDS bandpass filter data and SWEAP electron data from Encounters 1 through 9, we show statistical properties of narrowband whistlers from ~16 Rs to ~130 Rs, and compare wave occurrence to electron properties including beta, temperature anisotropy and heat flux. Whistlers are very rarely observed inside ~28 Rs (~0.13 au). Outside 28 Rs, they occur within a narrow range of parallel electron beta from ~1 to 10, and with a beta-heat flux occurrence consistent with the whistler heat flux fan instability. Because electron distributions inside ~30 Rs display signatures…
Fluid approach of current-driven Langmuir waves associated with type III radiation and whistler waves: Relevance to PSP and other solar wind observations
We use magnetic helicity to characterise solar wind fluctuations at proton-kinetic scales from Wind observations. For the first time, we separate the contributions to helicity from fluctuations propagating at angles quasi-parallel and oblique to the local mean magnetic field, $\mathbf{B}_0$. We find that the helicity of quasi-parallel fluctuations is consistent with Alfvén-ion cyclotron and fast magnetosonic-whistler modes driven by proton temperature anisotropy instabilities and the presence of a relative drift between $α$-particles and protons. We also find that the helicity of oblique fluct…
The first observed connection between kinetic instabilities driven by proton temperature anisotropy and estimated energy cascade rates in the turbulent solar wind is reported using measurements from the Wind spacecraft at 1 AU. We find enhanced cascade rates are concentrated along the boundaries of the ($β_{\parallel}$, $T_{\perp}/T_{\parallel}$)-plane, which includes regions theoretically unstable to the mirror and firehose instabilities. A strong correlation is observed between the estimated cascade rate and kinetic effects such as temperature anisotropy and plasma heating, resulting in prot…
A connection between kinetic processes and intermittent turbulence is observed in the solar wind plasma using measurements from the Wind spacecraft at 1 AU. In particular, kinetic effects such as temperature anisotropy and plasma heating are concentrated near coherent structures, such as current sheets, which are non-uniformly distributed in space. Furthermore, these coherent structures are preferentially found in plasma unstable to the mirror and firehose instabilities. The inhomogeneous heating in these regions, which is present in both the magnetic field parallel and perpendicular temperatu…
It is shown that the dispersion relation for whistler waves is identical for a high or low beta plasma. Furthermore in the high-beta solar wind plasma whistler waves meet the Landau resonance with electrons for velocities less than the thermal speed, and consequently the electric force is small compared to the mirror force. As whistlers propagate through the inhomogeneous solar wind, the perpendicular wave number increases through refraction, increasing the Landau damping rate. However, the whistlers can survive because the background kinetic Alfven wave turbulence creates a plateau by quasili…
The role of large amplitude whistler waves in the energization and scattering of solar wind electrons has long been an interesting problem in Space Physics. To study this wave-particle interaction, we developed a vectorized test particle simulation with a variational calculation of the Lyapunov exponents. From using secular perturbation theory on this Hamiltonian system of wave and particle, we confirmed that the pitch angle diffusion of the particle was along the constant Hamiltonian surface and that it was driven by the interaction with the resonance surfaces. We also showed that oblique whi…
The nature of the plasma wave modes around the ion kinetic scales in highly Alfvénic slow solar wind turbulence is investigated using data from the NASA's Parker Solar Probe taken in the inner heliosphere, at 0.18 Astronomical Unit (AU) from the sun. The joint distribution of the normalized reduced magnetic helicity $σ_m (θ_{RB}, τ)$ is obtained, where $θ_{RB}$ is the angle between the local mean magnetic field and the radial direction and $τ$ is the temporal scale. Two populations around ion scales are identified: the first population has $σ_m (θ_{RB}, τ) < 0$ for frequencies (in the spacecra…
The application of linear kinetic treatments to plasma waves, damping, and instability requires favorable inequalities between the associated linear timescales and timescales for nonlinear (e.g., turbulence) evolution. In the solar wind these two types of timescales may be directly compared using standard Kolmogorov-style analysis and observational data. The estimated local nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic cascade times, evaluated as relevant kinetic scales are approached, remain slower than the cyclotron period, but comparable to, or faster than, the typical timescales of instabilities, anisotro…
In space plasmas kinetic instabilities are driven by the beaming (drifting) components and/or the temperature anisotropy of charged particles. The heat-flux instabilities are known in the literature as electromagnetic modes destabilized by the electron beams (or strahls) aligned to the interplanetary magnetic field. A new kinetic approach is proposed here in order to provide a realistic characterization of heat-flux instabilities under the influence of electrons with temperature anisotropy. Numerical analysis is based on the kinetic Vlasov-Maxwell theory for two electron counter-streaming (cor…
We present analysis of 17,043 proton kinetic-scale current sheets collected over 124 days of Wind spacecraft measurements in the solar wind at 11 Samples/s magnetic field resolution. The current sheets have thickness $λ$ from a few tens to one thousand kilometers with typical value around 100 km or from about 0.1 to 10$λ_{p}$ in terms of local proton inertial length $λ_{p}$. We found that the current density is larger for smaller scale current sheets, $J_0\approx 6\; {\rm nA/m^2} \cdot (λ/100\;{\rm km})^{-0.56}$ , but does not statistically exceed critical value $J_A$ corresponding to the drif…
Effects of increasing whistler amplitude and propagation angle are studied through a variational test particle simulation and calculations of the resonance width. While high amplitude and oblique whistlers in typical 1 AU solar wind parameters are capable of forming an isotropic population without any additional processes, anomalous interactions with quasi-parallel whistlers may be essential to the process of halo formation near the Sun. High amplitude and quasi-parallel whistlers can scatter strahl electrons to low velocities (less than the wave phase velocity) to form a halo population, as l…
Observations in the solar wind suggest that the compressive component of inertial-range solar-wind turbulence is dominated by slow modes. The low collisionality of the solar wind allows for non-thermal features to survive, which suggests the requirement of a kinetic plasma description. The least-damped kinetic slow mode is associated with the ion-acoustic (IA) wave and a non-propagating (NP) mode. We derive analytical expressions for the IA-wave dispersion relation in an anisotropic plasma in the framework of gyrokinetics and then compare them to fully-kinetic numerical calculations, results f…
We use fluctuating magnetic helicity to investigate the polarisation properties of Alfvénic fluctuations at ion-kinetic scales in the solar wind as a function of $β_p$, the ratio of proton thermal pressure to magnetic pressure, and $θ_{vB}$, the angle between the proton flow and local mean magnetic field, $\mathbf{B}_0$. Using almost 15 years of \textit{Wind} observations, we separate the contributions to helicity from fluctuations with wave-vectors, $\textbf{k}$, quasi-parallel and oblique to $\mathbf{B}_0$, finding that the helicity of Alfvénic fluctuations is consistent with predictions fro…
Analysis of 15314 electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs) within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks observed by the \emph{Wind} spacecraft near 1 AU are introduced. The electron VDFs are fit to the sum of three model functions for the cold dense core, hot tenuous halo, and field-aligned beam/strahl component. The best results were found by modeling the core as either a bi-kappa or a symmetric (or asymmetric) bi-self-similar velocity distribution function, while both the halo and beam/strahl components were best fit to bi-kappa velocity distribution function. This is the firs…
We motivate the importance of studying kinetic scale turbulence for understanding the macroscopic properties of the heliosphere, such as the heating of the solar wind. We then discuss the technique by which kinetic scale density fluctuations can be measured using the spacecraft potential, including a calculation of the timescale for the spacecraft potential to react to the density changes. Finally, we compare the shape of the density spectrum at ion scales to theoretical predictions based on a cascade model for kinetic turbulence. We conclude that the shape of the spectrum, including the ion s…
The solar wind magnetic field contains rotations at a broad range of scales, which have been extensively studied in the MHD range. Here we present an extension of this analysis to the range between ion and electron kinetic scales. The distribution of rotation angles was found to be approximately log-normal, shifting to smaller angles at smaller scales almost self-similarly, but with small, statistically significant changes of shape. The fraction of energy in fluctuations with angles larger than $α$ was found to drop approximately exponentially with $α$, with e-folding angle $9.8^\circ$ at ion …
A strong super-Alfvénic drift of energetic particles (or cosmic rays, CRs) in a magnetized plasma can amplify the magnetic field significantly through non-resonant streaming instability (NRSI). While the traditional analysis is done for an ion current, here we use kinetic particle-in-cell simulations to study how the NRSI behaves when it is driven by electrons or by a mixture of electrons and positrons. In particular, we characterize growth rate, spectrum, and helicity of the unstable modes, as well the level of magnetic field at saturation. Our results are potentially relevant for several spa…
We use magnetic field and ion moment data from the MFI and SWE instruments onboard the Wind spacecraft to study the nature of solar wind turbulence at ion-kinetic scales. We analyze the spectral properties of magnetic field fluctuations between 0.1 and 5.5 Hz over 2012 using an automated routine, computing high-resolution 92 s power and magnetic helicity spectra. To ensure the spectral features are physical, we make the first in-flight measurement of the MFI `noise-floor' using tail-lobe crossings of the Earth's magnetosphere during early 2004. We utilize Taylor's hypothesis to Doppler-shift i…
The heat transport in the solar wind is dominated by the suprathermal electron populations, i.e., a tenuous halo and a field-aligned beam/strahl, with high energies and antisunward drifts along the magnetic field. Their evolution may offer plausible explanations for the rapid decrease of the heat flux with the solar wind expansion, typically invoked being the self-generated instabilities, or the so-called heat flux instabilities (HFIs). The present paper provides a unified description of the full spectrum of HFIs, as prescribed by the linear kinetic theory for high beta conditions ($β_e \gg 0.…
Understanding the nature of the turbulent fluctuations below the ion gyroradius in solar-wind turbulence is a great challenge. Recent studies have been mostly in favor of kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) type of fluctuations, but other kinds of fluctuations with characteristics typical of magnetosonic, whistler and ion Bernstein modes, could also play a role depending on the plasma parameters. Here we investigate the properties of the sub-proton-scale cascade with high-resolution hybrid-kinetic simulations of freely-decaying turbulence in 3D3V phase space, including electron inertia effects. Two prot…
Using the Parker Solar Probe data taken in the inner heliosphere, we investigate the power and spatial anisotropy of magnetic-field spectra at kinetic scales (i.e., around sub-ion scales) in solar wind turbulence in the inner heliosphere. We find that strong anisotropy of magnetic spectra occurs at kinetic scales with the strongest power in the perpendicular direction with respect to the local magnetic field (forming an angle theta_B with the mean flow velocity). The spectral index of magnetic spectra varies from -3.2 to -5.8 when the angle theta_B changes from 90 to 180 (or 0) deg, indicating…
Multiscale phenomena are ubiquitous in nature as well in laboratories. A broad range of interacting space and time scales determines the dynamics of many systems which are inherently multiscale. In most research disciplines multiscale phenomena are not only prominent, but also they have often played the dominant role. In the solar wind - magnetosphere interaction, multiscale features coexist along with the global or coherent features. Underlying these phenomena are the mathematical and theoretical approaches such as phase transitions, turbulence, self-organization, fractional kinetics, percola…
A long-lasting debate in space plasma physics concerns the nature of subproton-scale fluctuations in solar wind (SW) turbulence. Over the past decade, a series of theoretical and observational studies were presented in favor of either kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) or whistler turbulence. Here, we investigate numerically the nature of the subproton-scale turbulent cascade for typical SW parameters by means of unprecedented high-resolution simulations of forced hybrid-kinetic turbulence in two real-space and three velocity-space dimensions. Our analysis suggests that small-scale turbulence in this m…
The discovery of large-amplitude narrowband whistler-mode waves at frequencies of tenths of the electron cyclotron frequency in large numbers both inside ~.3 AU and at ~1 AU provides an answer to longstanding questions about scattering and energization of solar wind electrons. The waves can have rapid nonlinear interactions with electrons over a broad energy range. Counter-propagation between electrons and waves is not required for resonance with the obliquely propagating waves in contrast to the case for parallel propagation. Using a full 3d particle tracing code, we have examined interaction…
Three-dimensional (3D) hybrid particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, with kinetic ions and fluid electrons, of a plasma cloud expansion in the solar wind are presented, revealing the dynamics of the expansion, with shock formation, magnetic field compression, and the solar wind ions deflection around the plasma bubble. The similarities of this system with a magnetosphere are also pointed out.
Magnetic field fluctuations in the solar wind are commonly observed to follow a power law spectrum. Near proton-kinetic scales, a spectral break occurs which is commonly interpreted as a transition to kinetic turbulence. However, this transition is not yet entirely understood. By studying the scaling of the break with various plasma properties, it may be possible to constrain the processes leading to the onset of kinetic turbulence. Using data from Parker Solar Probe (\textit{PSP}), we measure the proton scale break over a range of heliocentric distances, enabling a measurement of the transiti…
In hydrodynamic turbulence, it is well established that the length of the dissipation scale depends on the energy cascade rate, i.e., the larger the energy input rate per unit mass, the more the turbulent fluctuations need to be driven to increasingly smaller scales to dissipate the larger energy flux. Observations of magnetic spectral energy densities indicate that this intuitive picture is not valid in solar wind turbulence. Dissipation seems to set in at the same length scale for different solar wind conditions independently of the energy flux. To investigate this difference in more detail,…
The measured spectrum of kinetic Alfven wave fluctuations in the turbulent solar wind plasma is used to calculate the electron and ion distribution functions resulting from quasi-linear diffusion. The modified ion distribution function is found to be unstable to long wavelength electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. These waves pitch angle scatter the parallel ion velocity into perpendicular velocity which effectively increases the perpendicular ion temperature.
Within the framework of quasilinear theory it has been found that when radio bursts of III type are generated by the inhomogeneous system of electron beam - solar wind plasma, only time of development of the primary stage of instability, i.e., agnetohydrodynamic, is more than the total time of relaxation of an electron beam derived within the homogeneous model. During the development of hydrodynamic instability the electron beam is spread from the Sun to the distance of 4 astonomical unities. The hydrodynamic stage is followed by the development of kinetic instability leading, ultimately, to t…
In the solar corona and solar wind, electron heat conduction is an important process that transports energy over large distances and helps determine the spatial variation of temperature. High-density regions undergoing rapid particle-particle collisions exhibit a heat flux described well by classical Spitzer-Harm theory. However, much of the heliosphere is closer to a more collisionless state, and there is no standard description of heat conduction for fluid-based (e.g., magnetohydrodynamic) models that applies generally. Some proposed models rely on electron velocity distributions that exhibi…
The nature of subproton scale fluctuations in the solar wind is an open question, partly because two similar types of electromagnetic turbulence can occur: kinetic Alfven turbulence and whistler turbulence. These two possibilities, however, have one key qualitative difference: whistler turbulence, unlike kinetic Alfven turbulence, has negligible power in density fluctuations. In this Letter, we present new observational data, as well as analytical and numerical results, to investigate this difference. The results show, for the first time, that the fluctuations well below the proton scale are p…
The solar wind escapes from the solar corona and is accelerated, over a short distance, to its terminal velocity. The energy balance associated with this acceleration remains poorly understood. To quantify the global electrostatic contribution to the solar wind dynamics, we empirically estimate the ambipolar electric field ($\mathrm{E}_\parallel$) and potential ($Φ_\mathrm{r,\infty}$). We analyse electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs) measured in the near-Sun solar wind, between 20.3\,$R_S$ and 85.3\,$R_S$, by the Parker Solar Probe. We test the predictions of two different solar wind…
The nature of solar wind turbulence in the dissipation range at scales much smaller than the large MHD scales remains under debate. Here a two-dimensional model based on the hybrid code abbreviated as A.I.K.E.F. is presented, which treats massive ions as particles obeying the kinetic Vlasov equation and massless electrons as a neutralizing fluid. Up to a certain wavenumber in the MHD regime, the numerical system is initialized by assuming a superposition of isotropic Alfvén waves with amplitudes that follow the empirically confirmed spectral law of Kolmogorov. Then turbulence develops and ener…
In this paper we investigate spectral and phase coherence properties of magnetic fluctuations in the vicinity of the spectral transition from large, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) to sub-ion scales using in-situ measurements of the Wind spacecraft in a fast stream. For the time interval investigated by Leamon et al. (1998) the phase-coherence analysis shows the presence of sporadic quasi-parallel Alfvén Ion Cyclotron (AIC) waves as well as coherent structures in the form of large-amplitude, quasi-perpendicular Alfvén vortex-like structures and current sheets. These waves and structures importantly …
We investigate properties of the plasma fluid motion in the large amplitude low frequency fluctuations of highly Alfvénic fast solar wind. We show that protons locally conserve total kinetic energy when observed from an effective frame of reference comoving with the fluctuations. For typical properties of the fast wind, this frame can be reasonably identified by alpha particles, which, owing to their drift with respect to protons at about the Alfvén speed along the magnetic field, do not partake in the fluid low frequency fluctuations. Using their velocity to transform proton velocity into the…
We investigate the role of kinetic instabilities driven by a proton anisotropy on the onset of magnetic reconnection by means of 2-D hybrid simulations. The collisionless tearing of a current sheet is studied in the presence of a proton temperature anisotropy in the surrounding plasma. Our results confirm that anisotropic protons within the current sheet region can significantly enhance/stabilize the tearing instability of the current. Moreover, fluctuations associated to linear instabilities excited by large proton temperature anisotropies can significantly influence the stability of the plas…
A variety of kinetic waves develop in the solar wind. The relationship between these waves and larger-scale structures, such as current sheets and ongoing turbulence remain a topic of investigation. Similarly, the instabilities producing ion-acoustic waves in the solar wind remains an open question. The goals of this paper are to investigate kinetic electrostatic Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves in the solar wind at 0.5 AU and determine whether current sheets and associated streaming instabilities can produce the observed waves. The relationship between these waves and currents is investigated …
Turbulence develops in any stressed flow when the scales of the forcing are much larger than those of the dissipation. In neutral fluids, it consists of chaotic motions in physical space but with a universal energy spectrum in Fourier space. Intermittency (non-Gaussian statistics of fluctuations) is another general property and it is related to the presence of coherent structures. Space plasmas are turbulent as well. Here, we focus on the kinetic plasma scales, which are not yet well understood. We address the following fundamental questions: (1) Do the turbulent fluctuations at kinetic scales…
