Given a finite group $G$, the generating graph $Γ(G)$ of $G$ has as vertices the non-identity elements of $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they are distinct and generate $G$ as group elements. Let $G$ be a 2-generated finite group. We prove that $Γ(G)$ is planar if and only if $G$ is isomorphic to one of the following groups: $C_2, C_3, C_4, C_5, C_6, C_2 \times C_2, D_3, D_4, Q_8, C_4\times C_2, D_6.$

Planarity of Cayley graphs of graph products of groups

We obtain a complete classification of graph products of finite abelian groups whose Cayley graphs with respect to the standard presentations are planar.

Planar graphs and covers

Planar locally finite graphs which are almost vertex transitive are discussed. If the graph is 3-connected and has at most one end then the group of automorphisms is a planar discontinuous group and its structure is well-known. A general result is obtained for such graphs where no restriction is put on the number of ends. It is shown that such a graph can be built up from one ended or finite planar graphs in a precise way. The results give a classification of the finitely generated groups with planar Cayley graphs.

Planar transitive graphs

We prove that the first homology group of every planar locally transitive finite graph $G$ is a finitely generated ${\rm Aut}(G)$-module and we prove a similar result for the fundamental group of locally finite planar Cayley graphs. Corollaries of these results include Droms's theorem that planar groups are finitely presented and Dunwoody's theorem that planar locally finite transitive graphs are accessible.

The planar Cayley graphs are effectively enumerable I: consistently planar graphs

We obtain an effective enumeration of the family of finitely generated groups admitting a faithful, properly discontinuous action on some 2-manifold contained in the sphere. This is achieved by introducing a type of group presentation capturing exactly these groups. Extending this in a companion paper, we find group presentations capturing the planar finitely generated Cayley graphs. Thus we obtain an effective enumeration of these Cayley graphs, yielding in particular an affirmative answer to a question of Droms et al.

The planar Cayley graphs are effectively enumerable II

We show that a group admits a planar, finitely generated Cayley graph if and only if it admits a special kind of group presentation we introduce, called a planar presentation. Planar presentations can be recognised algorithmically. As a consequence, we obtain an effective enumeration of the planar Cayley graphs, yielding in particular an affirmative answer to a question of Droms et al. asking whether the planar groups can be effectively enumerated.

Spatial graph as connected sum of a planar graph and a braid

In this paper we show that every finite spatial graph is a connected sum of a planar graph, which is a forest, i.e. disjoint union of finite number of trees and a tangle. As a consequence we get that any finite spatial graph is a connected sum of a planar graph and a braid. Using these decompositions it is not difficult to find a set of generators and defining relations for the fundamental group of compliment of a spatial graph in 3-space $\mathbb{R}^3$.
