We have monitored the flat spectrum radio quasar, 3C 279, in the optical $B$, $V$, $R$ and $I$ passbands from 2018 February to 2018 July for 24 nights, with a total of 716 frames, to study flux, colour and spectral variability on diverse timescales. 3C\,279 was observed using seven different telescopes: two in India, two in Argentina, two in Bulgaria and one in Turkey to understand the nature of the source in optical regime. The source was found to be active during the whole monitoring period and displayed significant flux variations in $B$, $V$, $R$, and $I$ passbands. Variability amplitudes on intraday basis varied from 5.20\% to 17.9\%. A close inspection of variability patterns during our observation cycle reveals simultaneity among optical emissions from all passbands. During the complete monitoring period, progressive increase in the amplitude of variability with frequency was detected for our target. The amplitudes of variability in $B$, $V$, $R$ and $I$ passbands have been estimated to be 177\%, 172\%, 171\% and 158\%, respectively. Using the structure function technique, we found intraday timescales ranging from $\sim 23$ minutes to about 115 minutes. We also studied colour-magnitude relationship and found indications of mild bluer-when-brighter trend on shorter timescales. Spectral indices ranged from 2.3 to 3.0 with no clear trend on long term basis. We have also generated spectral energy distributions for 3C\,279 in optical $B$, $V$, $R$ and $I$ passbands for 17 nights. Finally, possible emission mechanisms causing variability in blazars are discussed briefly.
Accretion disks around supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei produce continuum radiation at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths. Physical processes in the accretion flow lead to stochastic variability of this emission on a wide range of timescales. We measure the optical continuum variability observed in 67 active galactic nuclei and the characteristic timescale at which the variability power spectrum flattens. We find a correlation between this timescale and the black hole mass, extending over the entire mass range of supermassive black holes. This timescale is consistent with th…
We present a framework to link and describe AGN variability on a wide range of timescales, from days to billions of years. In particular, we concentrate on the AGN variability features related to changes in black hole fuelling and accretion rate. In our framework, the variability features observed in different AGN at different timescales may be explained as realisations of the same underlying statistical properties. In this context, we propose a model to simulate the evolution of AGN light curves with time based on the probability density function (PDF) and power spectral density (PSD) of the …
Blazar jet structure can be indirectly resolved by analyzing the multiwavelength variability. In this work, we analyze the long-term variability of blazars in radio, optical and X-ray energies with the Gaussian process (GP) method. The multiwavelength variability can be successfully characterized by the damped-random walk (DRW) model. The nonthermal optical characteristic timescales of 38 blazars are statistically consistent with the $γ$-ray characteristic timescales of 22 blazars. For three individuals (3C 273, PKS 1510-089, and BL Lac), the nonthermal optical, X-ray, and $γ$-ray characterist…
To search for optical variability on a wide range of timescales, we have carried out photometric monitoring of two flat spectrum radio quasars, 3C 454.3 and 3C 279, plus one BL Lac, S5 0716+714, all of which have been exhibiting remarkably high activity and pronounced variability at all wavelengths. CCD magnitudes in B, V, R and I pass-bands were determined for $\sim$ 7000 new optical observations from 114 nights made during 2011 - 2014, with an average length of $\sim$ 4 h each, at seven optical telescopes: four in Bulgaria, one in Greece, and two in India. We measured multiband optical flux …
In recent work done by Sun et. al., the color variation of quasars, namely the bluer-when-brighter trend, was found to be timescale-dependent using SDSS $g/r$ band light curves in the Stripe 82. Such timescale dependence, i.e., bluer variation at shorter timescales, supports the thermal fluctuation origin of the UV/optical variation in quasars, and can be well modeled with the inhomogeneous accretion disk model. In this paper, we extend the study to much shorter wavelengths in the rest frame (down to extreme UV), using GALaxy Evolution eXplorer (GALEX) photometric data of quasars collected in …

Characteristic variability timescales in blazar gamma-ray light curves can provide insight into the physical processes responsible for the gamma-ray variability. The power spectral density (PSD) is capable of revealing such timescales, which may appear as breaks or periodicities. Continuous-time autoregressive moving-average (CARMA) models can be used to accurately estimate a light curve's PSD. Through a lightcurve simulation study, we develop a methodology to identify PSD breaks using CARMA models. Using this methodology, we study the gamma-ray light curves of 13 bright blazars observed with …

We investigate the variability properties of blazars in the GeV band using the data of the Fermi/LAT telescope. We find that blazars exhibit variability on the scales down to the minimal timescale resolvable by Fermi, which is a function of the peak photon count rate in the LAT. This implies that the real minimal variability timescales for the majority of blazars are typically shorter than those resolvable by the LAT. We find that for several blazars these minimal variability timescales reach those associated to the blazar central engine, the supermassive black hole. At the same time, none of …
We analyze 1598 serendipitous Chandra X-ray observations of 462 radio-quiet quasars to constrain the frequency of extreme amplitude X-ray variability that is intrinsic to the quasar corona and innermost accretion flow. The quasars in this investigation are all spectroscopically confirmed, optically bright ($m_i \leq$ 20.2), and contain no identifiable broad absorption lines in their optical/ultraviolet spectra. This sample includes quasars spanning $z \approx$ 0.1 - 4 and probes X-ray variability on timescales of up to $\approx$ 12 rest-frame years. Variability amplitudes are computed between …
We constrain the minimum variability timescales for 938 GRBs observed by the Fermi/GBM instrument prior to July 11, 2012. The tightest constraints on progenitor radii derived from these timescales are obtained from light curves in the hardest energy channel. In the softer bands -- or from measurements of the same GRBs in the hard X-rays from Swift -- we show that variability timescales tend to be a factor 2--3 longer. Applying a survival analysis to account for detections and upper limits, we find median minimum timescale in the rest frame for long-duration and short-duration GRBs of 45 ms and…
BL Lacertae, the prototype of the BL Lacertae (BL Lac) category of blazars, underwent a giant $γ-$ray flare in April 2021. The Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (hereafter Fermi-LAT) observed a peak $γ-$ray (0.1$-$500 GeV) flux of $\sim$2 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ within a single orbit on 2021 April 27, which is historically the brightest $γ-$ray flux ever detected from the source. Here, we report, for the first time, the detection of significant minute-timescale GeV $γ-$ray flux variability in the BL Lac subclass of blazars by the Fermi…
Recently, two empirical correlations related to the minimum variability timescale ($\rm MTS$) of the lightcures are discovered in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). One is the anti-correlation between $\rm MTS$ and Lorentz factor $Γ$, the other is the anti-correlation between the $\rm MTS$ and gamma-ray luminosity $L_γ$. Both the two correlations might be used to explore the activity of the central engine of GRBs. In this paper we try to understand these empirical correlations by combining two popular black hole (BH) central engine models (namely, Blandford \& Znajek mechanism and neutrino-dominated acc…

We discuss possible physical causes of the observed spectral varia…
Multiwavelength variability data, combined with spectral-timing analysis techniques, provides information about the causal relationship between different physical components in accreting black holes. Using fast-timing data and long-term monitoring, we can probe the behaviour of the same components across the black hole mass scale. In this chapter we review the observational status of multiwavelength variability in accreting black holes, from black hole X-ray binaries to AGN, and consider the implications for models of accretion and ejection, primarily considering the evidence for accretion dis…
We characterize the optical variability properties of eight lobe-dominated radio quasars (QSOs): B2 0709$+$37, FBQS J095206.3$+$235245, PG 1004$+$130, [HB89] 1156$+$631, [HB89] 1425$+$267, [HB89] 1503$+$691, [HB89] 1721$+$343, 4C $+$74.26, systematically monitored for a duration of 13 years since 2009. The quasars are radio-loud objects with extended radio lobes that indicate their orientation close to the sky plane. Five of the eight QSOs are classified as giant radio quasars. All quasars showed variability during our monitoring, with magnitude variations between 0.3 and 1 mag for the least v…
On 2015 June 16, Fermi-LAT observed a giant outburst from the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 with a peak $>100$ MeV flux of $\sim3.6\times10^{-5}\;{\rm photons}\;{\rm cm}^{-2}\;{\rm s}^{-1}$ averaged over orbital period intervals. It is the historically highest $γ$-ray flux observed from the source including past EGRET observations, with the $γ$-ray isotropic luminosity reaching $\sim10^{49}\;{\rm erg}\;{\rm s}^{-1}$. During the outburst, the Fermi spacecraft, which has an orbital period of 95.4 min, was operated in a special pointing mode to optimize the exposure for 3C 279. For the first …
The old EXOSAT medium energy measurements of high frequency (HF) AGN power spectral normalisation are re-examined in the light of accurate black hole mass determinations which were not available when these data were first published (Green et al 1993). It is found that the normalised variability amplitude (NVA), measured directly from the power spectrum, is proportional to M^{beta} where beta ~ -0.54 +/- 0.08. As NVA is the square root of the power, these observations show that the normalisation of the HF power spectrum for this sample of AGN varies very close to inversely with black hole mass.…
A damped random walk is a stochastic process, defined by an exponential covariance matrix that behaves as a random walk for short time scales and asymptotically achieves a finite variability amplitude at long time scales. Over the last few years, it has been demonstrated, mostly but not exclusively using SDSS data, that a damped random walk model provides a satisfactory statistical description of observed quasar variability in the optical wavelength range, for rest-frame timescales from 5 days to 2000 days. The best-fit characteristic timescale and asymptotic variability amplitude scale with t…
We study the long-term ($\approx$30 years) radio variability of 43 radio bright AGNs by exploiting the data base of the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory (UMRAO) monitoring program. We model the periodograms (temporal power spectra) of the observed lightcurves as simple power-law noise (red noise, spectral power $P(f)\propto f^{-β}$) using Monte Carlo simulations, taking into account windowing effects (red-noise leak, aliasing). The power spectra of 39 (out of 43) sources are in good agreement with the models, yielding a range in power spectral index ($β$) from $\approx$1 to $…
For a sample of Swift and Fermi GRBs, we show that the minimum variability timescale and the spectral lag of the prompt emission is related to the bulk Lorentz factor in a complex manner: For small $Γ$'s, the variability timescale exhibits a shallow (plateau) region. For large $Γ$'s, the variability timescale declines steeply as a function of $Γ$ ($δT\proptoΓ^{-4.05\pm0.64}$). Evidence is also presented for an intriguing correlation between the peak times, t$_p$, of the afterglow emission and the prompt emission variability timescale.
In this paper we compile the analysis of ~ 200 synchrotron flare events from ~ 90 distinct objects/events for which the distance is well established, and hence the peak luminosity can be accurately estimated. For each event we measure this peak and compare it to the rise and decay timescales, as fit by exponential functions, which allows us in turn to estimate a minimum brightness temperature for all the events. The astrophysical objects from which the flares originate vary from flare stars to supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei, and include both repeating phenomena and single c…
[Abbreviated] We search for scaling relations between the fundamental AGN parameters and rest-frame UV/optical variability properties for a sample of $\sim$90 X-ray selected AGNs covering a wide redshift range from the XMM-COSMOS survey, with optical light curves in four bands provided by the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) Medium Deep Field 04 survey. To estimate the variability amplitude we utilize the normalized excess variance ($σ_{\mathrm{rms}}^{2}$) and probe variability on rest-frame timescales of several months and years by calculating $σ_{\mathrm{rms}}^{2}$ from different parts of our light curves.…
We present the results of variability power spectral density (PSD) analysis using multiwavelength radio to GeV\,$γ$-ray light curves covering decades/years to days/minutes timescales for the blazars 3C 279 and PKS 1510-089. The PSDs are modeled as single power-laws, and the best-fit spectral shape is derived using the `power spectral response' method. With more than ten years of data obtained with weekly/daily sampling intervals, most of the PSDs cover ~2-4 decades in temporal frequency; moreover, in the optical band, the PSDs cover ~6 decades for 3C 279 due to the availability of intranight l…
We report the first results of a systematic investigation to characterize blazar variability power spectral densities (PSDs) at optical frequencies using densely sampled (5--15 minutes integration time), high photometric accuracy ($\lesssim$0.2--0.5\%) R-band intranight light curves, covering timescales ranging from several hours to $\sim$15\,minutes. Our sample consists of 14 optically bright blazars, including nine BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and five flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) which have shown statistically significant variability during 29 monitoring sessions. We model the intra…
AGN exhibit rapid, high amplitude stochastic flux variations across the entire electromagnetic spectrum on timescales ranging from hours to years. The cause of this variability is poorly understood. We present a Green's Function-based method for using variability to (1) measure the time-scales on which flux perturbations evolve and (2) characterize the driving flux perturbations. We model the observed light curve of an AGN as a linear differential equation driven by stochastic impulses. We analyze the light curve of the Kepler AGN Zw 229-15 and find that the observed variability behavior can b…
We explore the evolution of the time variability (in the optical $g$-band and on timescales of weeks to years) of SDSS Stripe 82 quasars along the quasar main sequence. A parent sample of $1004$ quasars within $0.5\leq z \leq 0.89$ are used for our statistical studies, we then make subsamples from our parent sample: a subsample of $246$ quasars with similar luminosities, and a subsample of $399$ quasars with similar Rfe (i.e., the ratio of the equivalent width of FeII within $4435$--$4685\ \mathrmÅ$ to that of \Hbeta). We find the variability amplitude decreases with luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{bo…

We have monitored the BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714 in the optical bands during 2012 January and February with long time spans on intraday timescales ($>$5 hr) and high time resolutions. During this monitoring period, the object shows violent flaring activity both in short and intraday timescales. The object has high value of duty cycle. The light curves detected as intraday variability (IDV) show variability of various shapes. The variability amplitude is from 12.81 per cent to 33.22 per cent, and the average value $19.92\pm5.87$ per cent. The overall magnitude variabilities are $\bigtriangl…
We present results of X-ray spectral and time-domain variability analyses of 4 faint, "quiescent" blazars from the Swift-BAT 105-month catalog. We use observations from a recent, 5-month long NICER campaign, as well as archival BAT data. Variations in the 0.3-2 keV flux are detected on minute, $\sim$weekly, and monthly timescales, but we find that the fractional variability $F_{\rm var}$ on these timescales is $<25\%$ and decreases on longer timescales, implying generally low-amplitude variability across all sources and showing very low variability on monthly timescales ($F_{\rm var}\lesssim13…
We present our optical photometric observations of three TeV blazars, PKS 1510-089, PG 1553+113 and Mrk 501 taken using two telescopes in India, one in Bulgaria, one in Greece and one in Serbia during 2012 - 2014. These observations covered a total of 95 nights with a total of 202 B filter frames, 247 images in V band, 817 in R band while 229 images were taken in the I filter. This work is focused on multi-band flux and colour variability studies of these blazars on diverse timescales which are useful in understanding the emission mechanisms. We studied the variability characteristics of above…
We offer an explanation for the anti-correlation between the minimum variability timescale ($MTS$) in the prompt emission light curve of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the estimated bulk Lorentz factor of these GRBs, in the context of a magnetically arrested disk (MAD) model. In particular, we show that previously derived limits on the maximum available energy per baryon in a Blandford-Znajek jet leads to a relationship between the characteristic MAD timescale, $t_{MAD}$, in GRBs and the maximum bulk Lorentz factor: $t_{MAD} \propto Γ^{-6}$, somewhat steeper than (although within the error bars o…
In the early days of April 2010, the blazar 3C 454.3 (z=0.859) underwent a strong gamma-ray outburst, reaching fluxes (E > 100 MeV) in excess of 10^-5 ph cm^-2 s^-1. The Fermi Gamma ray Space Telescope performed a 200 ks long pointed observation starting from 5 April 2010 19:38 UTC. This allowed us to try probing the variability of the gamma-ray emission on timescales of hours or less. We found the variability on a few hours timescale. On sub-hour timescale we found no evidence of significant variability, although the present statistics is not yet conclusive and further observations are needed…
We report the results of our optical (VRI) photometric observations of the TeV blazar 1ES 0806$+$524 on 153 nights during 2011-2019 using seven optical telescopes in Europe and Asia. We investigated the variability of the blazar on intraday as well as on long-term timescales. We examined eighteen intraday light curves for flux and color variations using the most reliable power-enhanced F-test and the nested ANOVA test. Only on one night was a small, but significant, variation found, in both $V$ band and $R$ band light curves. The $V-R$ color index was constant on every one of those nights. Flu…
We carried out a high time-resolution, multicolour optical observing campaign for eight $γ$-ray detected blazars during 2010-2020. We analyze flux variations, correlations between magnitudes and colours on different timescales. Intraday variability (IDV) is detected in all eight sources of our sample. A bluer-when-brighter (BWB) chromatic trend is dominant on intraday timescales. On the short timescales, the BWB trend only shows up in ON 231, 3C 279, BL Lacertae and 1E 1458.8+2249. There is a BWB trend in 3C 279 on the long timescale. We estimate the upper limits of black hole mass for three b…
We develop a robust technique to determine the minimum variability timescale for Gamma-ray Burst light curves, utilizing Haar wavelets. Our approach averages over the data for a given GRB, providing an aggregate measure of signal variation while also retaining sensitivity to narrow pulses within complicated time-series. In contrast to previous studies using wavelets, which simply define the minimum timescale in reference to the measurement noise floor, our approach identifies the signature of temporally-smooth features in the wavelet scaleogram and then additionally identifies a break in the s…
The $γ$-ray astronomy in time domain has been by now progressed further as the variabilities of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) on different timescales have been reported a lot. We study the $γ$-ray variabilities of 23 jetted AGNs through applying a stochastic process method to the ~12.7 yr long-term light curve (LC) obtained by Fermi-Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). In this method, the stochastically driven damped simple harmonic oscillator (SHO) and the damped random walk (DRW) models are used to model the long-term LCs. Our results show that the long-term variabilities of 23 AGNs can be char…
We report on two Chandra observations of the quasar PSO J0309+27, the most distant blazar observed so far (z=6.1), performed eight months apart, in March and November 2020. Previous Swift-XRT observation showed that this object is one of the brightest X-ray sources beyond redshift 6.0 ever observed so far. This new data-set confirmed the high flux level and unveiled a spectral change occurred on a very short timescale (250s rest-frame), caused by a significant softening of the emission spectrum. This kind of spectral variability, on a such short interval, has never been reported in the X-ray e…
The complete high-resolution lightcurves of Swift GRB 080319B present an opportunity for detailed temporal analysis of the prompt optical emission. With a two-component distribution of initial Lorentz factors, we simulate the dynamical process of the ejected shells from the central engine in the framework of the internal shock model. The emitted radiation are decomposed into different frequency ranges for a temporal correlation analysis between the lightcurves in different energy bands. The resulting prompt optical and gamma-ray emission show similar temporal profiles, both as a superposition …
Recently observed minute timescale variability of blazar emission at TeV energies has imposed severe constraints on jet models and TeV emission mechanisms. We focus on a robust jet instability to explain this variability. As a consequence of the bulk outflow of the jet plasma, the pressure is likely to be anisotropic, with the parallel pressure $P_{||}$ in the forward jet direction exceeding the perpendicular pressure $P_{\perp}$. Under these circumstances, the jet is susceptible to the firehose instability, which can cause disruptions in the large scale jet structure and result in variability…
We present the variability analysis of a 100 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1.5 active galaxy NGC 3227. The observation found NGC 3227 in a period where its hard power-law component displayed remarkably little long-term variability. This lucky event allows us to observe clearly a soft spectral component undergoing a large-amplitude but slow flux variation. Using combined spectral and timing analysis we isolate two independent variable continuum components and characterize their behavior as a function of timescale. Rapid and coherent variations throughout the 0.2-10 keV band reveal a …
General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of accretion disks and jets associated with supermassive black holes show variability on a wide range of timescales. On timescales comparable to or longer than the gravitational timescale $t_G=GM/c^3$, variation may be dominated by orbital dynamics of the inhomogeneous accretion flow. Turbulent evolution within the accretion disk is expected on timescales comparable to the orbital period, typically an order of magnitude larger than $t_G$. For Sgr A*, $t_G$ is much shorter than the typical duration of a VLBI experiment, enabling us to…
Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are transient, multi-wavelength events in which a star is ripped apart by a supermassive black hole. Observations show that in a small fraction of TDEs, a short-lived, synchrotron emitting jet is produced. We observed the newly discovered TDE AT2022cmc with a slew of radio facilities over the first 100 days after its discovery. The light curve from the AMI-LA radio interferometer shows day-timescale variability which we attribute to a high brightness temperature emitting region as opposed to scintillation. We measure a brightness temperature of 2x10^15 K, which i…

We reviewed multi-wavelength blazars variability and detection of quasi-periodic oscillations on intra-day timescales. The variability timescale from few minutes to up to less than a days is commonly known as intra-day variability. These fast variations are extremely useful to constrain the size of emitting region, black hole mass estimation, etc. It is noticed that in general blazars show intra-day variability in the complete electromagnetic spectrum. But some class of blazars either do not show or show very little intra-day variability in a specific band of electromagnetic spectrum. Blazars …
