In this paper, we disseminate a new handwritten digits-dataset, termed Kannada-MNIST, for the Kannada script, that can potentially serve as a direct drop-in replacement for the original MNIST dataset. In addition to this dataset, we disseminate an additional real world handwritten dataset (with $10k$ images), which we term as the Dig-MNIST dataset that can serve as an out-of-domain test dataset. We also duly open source all the code as well as the raw scanned images along with the scanner settings so that researchers who want to try out different signal processing pipelines can perform end-to-end comparisons. We provide high level morphological comparisons with the MNIST dataset and provide baselines accuracies for the dataset disseminated. The initial baselines obtained using an oft-used CNN architecture ($96.8\%$ for the main test-set and $76.1\%$ for the Dig-MNIST test-set) indicate that these datasets do provide a sterner challenge with regards to generalizability than MNIST or the KMNIST datasets. We also hope this dissemination will spur the creation of similar datasets for all the languages that use different symbols for the numeral digits.
In this letter, we contribute a multi-language handwritten digit recognition dataset named MNIST-MIX, which is the largest dataset of the same type in terms of both languages and data samples. With the same data format with MNIST, MNIST-MIX can be seamlessly applied in existing studies for handwritten digit recognition. By introducing digits from 10 different languages, MNIST-MIX becomes a more challenging dataset and its imbalanced classification requires a better design of models. We also present the results of applying a LeNet model which is pre-trained on MNIST as the baseline.
In this paper, the problem of handwritten digit recognition has been addressed. However, the underlying language is Persian/Arabic, and the system with which this task is a capsule network (CapsNet) has recently emerged as a more advanced architecture than its ancestor, namely CNN (Convolutional Neural Network). The training of the architecture is performed using the Hoda dataset, which has been provided for Persian/Arabic handwritten digits. The output of the system clearly outperforms the results achieved by its ancestors, as well as other previously presented recognition algorithms.

Automatic recognition of Urdu handwritten digits and characters, is a challenging task. It has applications in postal address reading, bank's cheque processing, and digitization and preservation of handwritten manuscripts from old ages. While there exists a significant work for automatic recognition of handwritten English characters and other major languages of the world, the work done for Urdu lan-guage is extremely insufficient. This paper has two goals. Firstly, we introduce a pioneer dataset for handwritten digits and characters of Urdu, containing samples from more than 900 individuals. S…

We describe a method for classification of handwritten Kannada characters using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). Kannada script is agglutinative, where simple shapes are concatenated horizontally to form a character. This results in a large number of characters making the task of classification difficult. Character segmentation plays a significant role in reducing the number of classes. Explicit segmentation techniques suffer when overlapping shapes are present, which is common in the case of handwritten text. We use HMMs to take advantage of the agglutinative nature of Kannada script, which allow…

Images of handwritten digits are different from natural images as the orientation of a digit, as well as similarity of features of different digits, makes confusion. On the other hand, deep convolutional neural networks are achieving huge success in computer vision problems, especially in image classification. BDNet is a densely connected deep convolutional neural network model used to classify (recognize) Bengali handwritten numeral digits. It is end-to-end trained using ISI Bengali handwritten numeral dataset. During training, untraditional data preprocessing and augmentation techniques are …

CNN model is a popular method for imagery analysis, so it could be utilized to recognize handwritten digits based on MNIST datasets. For higher recognition accuracy, various CNN models with different fully connected layer sizes are exploited to figure out the relationship between the CNN fully connected layer size and the recognition accuracy. Inspired by previous pruning work, we performed pruning methods of distinctiveness on CNN models and compared the pruning performance with NN models. For better pruning performances on CNN, the effect of angle threshold on the pruning performance was exp…

The MNIST dataset has become a standard benchmark for learning, classification and computer vision systems. Contributing to its widespread adoption are the understandable and intuitive nature of the task, its relatively small size and storage requirements and the accessibility and ease-of-use of the database itself. The MNIST database was derived from a larger dataset known as the NIST Special Database 19 which contains digits, uppercase and lowercase handwritten letters. This paper introduces a variant of the full NIST dataset, which we have called Extended MNIST (EMNIST), which follows the s…

This paper presents a novel approach to generate synthetic dataset for handwritten word recognition systems. It is difficult to recognize handwritten scripts for which sufficient training data is not readily available or it may be expensive to collect such data. Hence, it becomes hard to train recognition systems owing to lack of proper dataset. To overcome such problems, synthetic data could be used to create or expand the existing training dataset to improve recognition performance. Any available digital data from online newspaper and such sources can be used to generate synthetic data. In t…
Although the image recognition has been a research topic for many years, many researchers still have a keen interest in it[1]. In some papers[2][3][4], however, there is a tendency to compare models only on one or two datasets, either because of time restraints or because the model is tailored to a specific task. Accordingly, it is hard to understand how well a certain model generalizes across image recognition field[6]. In this paper, we compare four neural networks on MNIST dataset[5] with different division. Among them, three are Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)[7], Deep Residual Network…

Many localized languages struggle to reap the benefits of recent advancements in character recognition systems due to the lack of substantial amount of labeled training data. This is due to the difficulty in generating large amounts of labeled data for such languages and inability of deep learning techniques to properly learn from small number of training samples. Keyword spotting (KWS) in historical documents is an important tool for the initial exploration of digitized collections. Nowadays, the most efficient KWS methods are relying on machine learning techniques that require a large amount of annotated training data. However, in the case of historical manuscripts, there is a lack of annotated corpus for training. To handle the data scarcity issue, we investigate the merits of the self-supervised learning to extract useful representations of the input data without relying on human annotations and then using these representations in the downstream tas…

NumtaDB is by far the largest data-set collection for handwritten digits in Bengali. This is a diverse dataset containing more than 85000 images. But this diversity also makes this dataset very difficult to work with. The goal of this paper is to find the benchmark for pre-processed images which gives good accuracy on any machine learning models. The reason being, there are no available pre-processed data for Bengali digit recognition to work with like the English digits for MNIST.
