Linear dynamical systems are a fundamental and powerful parametric model class. However, identifying the parameters of a linear dynamical system is a venerable task, permitting provably efficient solutions only in special cases. This work shows that the eigenspectrum of unknown linear dynamics can be identified without full system identification. We analyze a computationally efficient and provably convergent algorithm to estimate the eigenvalues of the state-transition matrix in a linear dynamical system.
When applied to time series clustering, our algorithm can efficiently cluster multi-dimensional time series with temporal offsets and varying lengths, under the assumption that the time series are generated from linear dynamical systems. Evaluating our algorithm on both synthetic data and real electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, we see improvements in clustering quality over existing baselines.

A tensor provides a concise way to codify the interdependence of complex data. Treating a tensor as a d-way array, each entry records the interaction between the different indices. Clustering provides a way to parse the complexity of the data into more readily understandable information. Clustering methods are heavily dependent on the algorithm of choice, as well as the chosen hyperparameters of the algorithm. However, their sensitivity to data scales is largely unknown. In this work, we apply the discrete wavelet transform to analyze the effects of coarse-graining on clustering tensor data. W…

This paper introduces a clustering framework for networks with nodes annotated with time-series data. The framework addresses all types of network-clustering problems: State clustering, node clustering within states (a.k.a. topology identification or community detection), and even subnetwork-state-sequence identification/tracking. Via a bottom-up approach, features are first extracted from the raw nodal time-series data by kernel autoregressive-moving-average modeling to reveal non-linear dependencies and low-rank representations, and then mapped onto the Grassmann manifold (Grassmannian). All…
Accurate labeling of phase connectivity in electrical distribution systems is important for maintenance and operations but is often erroneous or missing. In this paper, we present a process to identify which smart meters must be in the same phase using a hierarchical clustering method on voltage time series data. Instead of working with the time series data directly, we apply the Fourier transform to represent the data in their frequency domain, remove $98\%$ of the Fourier coefficients, and use the remaining coefficients to cluster the meters are in the same phase. Result of this process is v…
In this work a robust clustering algorithm for stationary time series is proposed. The algorithm is based on the use of estimated spectral densities, which are considered as functional data, as the basic characteristic of stationary time series for clustering purposes. A robust algorithm for functional data is then applied to the set of spectral densities. Trimming techniques and restrictions on the scatter within groups reduce the effect of noise in the data and help to prevent the identification of spurious clusters. The procedure is tested in a simulation study, and is also applied to a rea…
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease with a high degree of heterogeneity in its clinical features, rate of progression, and change of variables over time. In this work, we present a novel data-driven, network-based Trajectory Profile Clustering (TPC) algorithm for 1) identification of PD subtypes and 2) early prediction of disease progression in individual patients. Our subtype identification is based not only on PD variables, but also on their complex patterns of progression, providing a useful tool for the analysis of large heterogenous, longitudinal data. Understanding the complex structure of multivariate extremes is a major challenge in various fields from portfolio monitoring and environmental risk management to insurance. In the framework of multivariate Extreme Value Theory, a common characterization of extremes' dependence structure is the angular measure. It is a suitable measure to work in extreme regions as it provides meaningful insights concerning the subregions where extremes tend to concentrate their mass. The present paper develops a novel optimization-based approach to assess the dependence structure of extremes. This support ide…
Homonym identification is important for WSD that require coarse-grained partitions of senses. The goal of this project is to determine whether contextual information is sufficient for identifying a homonymous word. To capture the context, BERT embeddings are used as opposed to Word2Vec, which conflates senses into one vector. SemCor is leveraged to retrieve the embeddings. Various clustering algorithms are applied to the embeddings. Finally, the embeddings are visualized in a lower-dimensional space to understand the feasibility of the clustering process.
In recent years, the advances in single-cell RNA-seq techniques have enabled us to perform large-scale transcriptomic profiling at single-cell resolution in a high-throughput manner. Unsupervised learning such as data clustering has become the central component to identify and characterize novel cell types and gene expression patterns. In this study, we review the existing single-cell RNA-seq data clustering methods with critical insights into the related advantages and limitations. In addition, we also review the upstream single-cell RNA-seq data processing techniques such as quality control,…

This paper introduces a new unsupervised method for the clustering of physiological data into health states based on their similarity. We propose an iterative hierarchical clustering approach that combines health states according to a similarity constraint to new arbitrary health states. We applied method to experimental data in which the physical strain of subjects was systematically varied. We derived health states based on parameters extracted from ECG data. The occurrence of health states shows a high temporal correlation to the experimental phases of the physical exercise. We compared our…

Motivation: Identifying interaction clusters of large gene regulatory networks (GRNs) is critical for its further investigation, while this task is very challenging, attributed to data noise in experiment data, large scale of GRNs, and inconsistency between gene expression profiles and function modules, etc. It is promising to semi-supervise this process by prior information, but shortage of prior information sometimes make it very challenging. Meanwhile, it is also annoying, and sometimes impossible to discovery gold standard for evaluation of clustering results.\\ Results: With assistance of…

Unsupervised person re-identification (Re-ID) attracts increasing attention due to its potential to resolve the scalability problem of supervised Re-ID models. Most existing unsupervised methods adopt an iterative clustering mechanism, where the network was trained based on pseudo labels generated by unsupervised clustering. However, clustering errors are inevitable. To generate high-quality pseudo-labels and mitigate the impact of clustering errors, we propose a novel clustering relationship modeling framework for unsupervised person Re-ID. Specifically, before clustering, the relation betwee…

This paper presents an Expert Decision Support System for the identification of time-invariant, aeroacoustic source types. The system comprises two steps: first, acoustic properties are calculated based on spectral and spatial information. Second, clustering is performed based on these properties. The clustering aims at helping and guiding an expert for quick identification of different source types, providing an understanding of how sources differ. This supports the expert in determining similar or atypical behavior. A variety of features are proposed for capturing the characteristics of the …

Cluster analysis methods are used to identify homogeneous subgroups in a data set. In biomedical applications, one frequently applies cluster analysis in order to identify biologically interesting subgroups. In particular, one may wish to identify subgroups that are associated with a particular outcome of interest. Conventional clustering methods generally do not identify such subgroups, particularly when there are a large number of high-variance features in the data set. Conventional methods may identify clusters associated with these high-variance features when one wishes to obtain secondary…
The identification of co-regulated genes and their transcription-factor binding sites (TFBS) are the key steps toward understanding transcription regulation. In addition to effective laboratory assays, various bi-clustering algorithms for detection of the co-expressed genes have been developed. Bi-clustering methods are used to discover subgroups of genes with similar expression patterns under to-be-identified subsets of experimental conditions when applied to gene expression data. By building two fuzzy partition matrices of the gene expression data with the Axiomatic Fuzzy Set (AFS) theory, t…

We present a novel algorithm, called Links, designed to perform online clustering on unit vectors in a high-dimensional Euclidean space. The algorithm is appropriate when it is necessary to cluster data efficiently as it streams in, and is to be contrasted with traditional batch clustering algorithms that have access to all data at once. For example, Links has been successfully applied to embedding vectors generated from face images or voice recordings for the purpose of recognizing people, thereby providing real-time identification during video or audio capture.

(2) How does dimensionality reduction affect the quality of automated log clustering? (3) How does the criterion used for merging clusters in the clustering algorithm affect clustering quality? Method: We replicate and extend earlier work on clustering system log fi…

Broad searches for continuous gravitational wave signals rely on hierarchies of follow-up stages for candidates above a given significance threshold. An important step to simplify these follow-ups and reduce the computational cost is to bundle together in a single follow-up nearby candidates. This step is called clustering and we investigate carrying it out with a deep learning network. In our first paper [1], we implemented a deep learning clustering network capable of correctly identifying clusters due to large signals. In this paper, a network is implemented that can detect clusters due to …

As one type of efficient unsupervised learning methods, clustering algorithms have been widely used in data mining and knowledge discovery with noticeable advantages. However, clustering algorithms based on density peak have limited clustering effect on data with varying density distribution (VDD), equilibrium distribution (ED), and multiple domain-density maximums (MDDM), leading to the problems of sparse cluster loss and cluster fragmentation. To address these problems, we propose a Domain-Adaptive Density Clustering (DADC) algorithm, which consists of three steps: domain-adaptive density me…

It is often the case that, within an online recommender system, multiple users share a common account. Can such shared accounts be identified solely on the basis of the userprovided ratings? Once a shared account is identified, can the different users sharing it be identified as well? Whenever such user identification is feasible, it opens the way to possible improvements in personalized recommendations, but also raises privacy concerns. We develop a model for composite accounts based on unions of linear subspaces, and use subspace clustering for carrying out the identification task. We show t…

The last decades have not only been characterized by an explosive growth of data, but also an increasing appreciation of data as a valuable resource. Their value comes with the ability to extract meaningful patterns that are of economic, societal or scientific relevance. A particular challenge is the identification of patterns across time, including those that might only become apparent when the temporal dimension is taken into account. Here, we present a novel method that aims to achieve this by detecting dynamic clusters, i.e. structural elements that can be present over prolonged durations.…

This paper proposes an efficient technique for partitioning large biometric database during identification. In this technique feature vector which comprises of global and local descriptors extracted from offline signature are used by fuzzy clustering technique to partition the database. As biometric features posses no natural order of sorting, thus it is difficult to index them alphabetically or numerically. Hence, some supervised criteria is required to partition the search space. At the time of identification the fuzziness criterion is introduced to find the nearest clusters for declaring th…

The ecological validity of soundscape studies usually rests on a choice of soundscapes that are representative of the perceptual space under investigation. For example, a soundscape pleasantness study might investigate locations with soundscapes ranging from "pleasant" to "annoying". The choice of soundscapes is typically researcher-led, but a participant-led process can reduce selection bias and improve result reliability. Hence, we propose a robust participant-led method to pinpoint characteristic soundscapes possessing arbitrary perceptual attributes. We validate our method by identifying S…

Dynamical Systems (DS) are fundamental to the modeling and understanding time evolving phenomena, and have application in physics, biology and control. As determining an analytical description of the dynamics is often difficult, data-driven approaches are preferred for identifying and controlling nonlinear DS with multiple equilibrium points. Identification of such DS has been treated largely as a supervised learning problem. Instead, we focus on an unsupervised learning scenario where we know neither the number nor the type of dynamics. We propose a Graph-based spectral clustering method that…

One of the most prominent challenges in clustering is "the user's dilemma," which is the problem of selecting an appropriate clustering algorithm for a specific task. A formal approach for addressing this problem relies on the identification of succinct, user-friendly properties that formally capture when certain clustering methods are preferred over others. Until now these properties focused on advantages of classical Linkage-Based algorithms, failing to identify when other clustering paradigms, such as popular center-based methods, are preferable. We present surprisingly simple new propertie…
Many methods have been developed for data clustering, such as k-means, expectation maximization and algorithms based on graph theory. In this latter case, graphs are generally constructed by taking into account the Euclidian distance as a similarity measure, and partitioned using spectral methods. However, these methods are not accurate when the clusters are not well separated. In addition, it is not possible to automatically determine the number of clusters. These limitations can be overcome by taking into account network community identification algorithms. In this work, we propose a methodo…
Extracting relevant urban patterns from multiple data sources can be difficult using classical clustering algorithms since we have to make a suitable setup of the hyperparameters of the algorithms and deal with outliers. It should be addressed correctly to help urban planners in the decision-making process for the further development of a big city. For instance, experts' main interest in criminology is comprehending the relationship between crimes and the socio-economic characteristics at specific georeferenced locations. In addition, the classical clustering algorithms take little notice of t…
Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) for re-identification (re-ID) is a challenging task: to avoid a costly annotation of additional data, it aims at transferring knowledge from a domain with annotated data to a domain of interest with only unlabeled data. Pseudo-labeling approaches have proven to be effective for UDA re-ID. However, the effectiveness of these approaches heavily depends on the choice of some hyperparameters (HP) that affect the generation of pseudo-labels by clustering. The lack of annotation in the domain of interest makes this choice non-trivial. Current approaches simply re…
