The ideal Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are challenging because one needs to maintain the divergence free condition, $\nabla \cdot \Bv = 0$. Many numerical methods have been developed to enforce this condition. In this work, we further our work on mesh aligned constrained transport by developing a new kernel based approach for the vector potential in 2D and 3D. The approach for solving the vector potential is based on the method of lines transpose and is A-stable, eliminating the need for diffusion limiters needed in our previous work in 3D. The work presented here is an improvement over the previous method in the context of problems with strong shocks due to the fact that we could eliminate the diffusion limiter that was needed in our previous version of constrained transport. The method is robust and has been tested on the 2D and 3D cloud shock, blast wave and field loop problems.
We propose two unconditionally stable, linear ensemble algorithms with pre-computable shared coefficient matrices across different realizations for the magnetohydrodynamics equations. The viscous terms are treated by a standard perturbative discretization. The nonlinear terms are discretized fully explicitly within the framework of the generalized positive auxiliary variable approach (GPAV). Artificial viscosity stabilization that modifies the kinetic energy is introduced to improve accuracy of the GPAV ensemble methods. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and robustnes…
In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation for a diffuse interface model of the two-phase incompressible inductionless magnetohydrodynamics problem. This model consists of Cahn-Hilliard equations, Navier-Stokes equations and Poisson equation. We propose a linear and decoupled finite element method to solve this highly nonlinear and multi-physics system. For the time variable, the discretization is a combination of first-order Euler semi-implicit scheme, several first-order stabilization terms and implicit-explicit treatments for coupling terms. For the space variables, we adopt the…
A fully discretization, unconditionally energy stable finite element method solving the thermodynamically consistent diffuse interface model for incompressible two-phase MHD flows with large density ratios
We revise the structure-preserving finite element method in [K. Hu, Y. MA and J. Xu. (2017) Stable finite element methods preserving $\nabla \cdot \mathbf{B}=0$ exactly for MHD models. Numer. Math.,135, 371-396]. The revised method is semi-implicit in time-discretization. We prove the linearized scheme preserves the divergence free property for the magnetic field exactly at each time step. Further, we showed the linearized scheme is unconditionally stable and we obtain optimal convergence in the energy norm of the revised method even for solutions with low regularity.
We develop a new second-order unstaggered path-conservative central-upwind (PCCU) scheme for ideal and shallow water magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The new scheme possesses several important properties: it locally preserves the divergence-free constraint, it does not rely on any (approximate) Riemann problem solver, and it robustly produces high-resolution and non-oscillatory results. The derivation of the scheme is based on the Godunov-Powell nonconservative modifications of the studied MHD systems. The local divergence-free property is enforced by augmenting the modified systems with …
In this paper, a high order free-stream preserving finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme is developed for the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations on curvilinear meshes. Under the constrained transport framework, magnetic potential evolved by a Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) equation is introduced to control the divergence error. In this work, we use the alternative formulation of WENO scheme [10] for the nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law, and design a novel method to solve the magnetic potential. Theoretical derivation and numerical results show that the scheme …
This paper studies high-order accurate entropy stable nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for the ideal special relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD). It is built on the modified RMHD equations with a particular source term, which is analogous to the Powell's eight-wave formulation and can be symmetrized so that an entropy pair is obtained. We design an affordable fully consistent two-point entropy conservative flux, which is not only consistent with the physical flux, but also maintains the zero parallel magnetic component, and then construct high-order accurate semi-discrete entropy…

We develop a new numerical scheme for ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, which is robust against one- and multi-dimensional shocks, and is accurate for low Mach number flows and discontinuities. The scheme belongs to a family of the advection upstream splitting method employed in computational aerodynamics, and it splits the inviscid flux in MHD equations into advection, pressure, and magnetic tension parts, and then individually evaluates mass, pressure, and magnetic tension fluxes at the interface of a computational cell. The mass flux is designed to avoid numerical shock instabili…
