Star formation is thought to be driven by two groups of mechanisms; spontaneous collapse and triggered collapse. Triggered star formation mechanisms further diverge into cloud-cloud collision (CCC), "collect and collapse" (C\&C) and shock induced collapse of pre-existing, gravitationally stable cores, or 'radiation driven implosion' (RDI). To evaluate the contributions of these mechanisms and establish whether these processes can occur together within the same star forming region we performed mapping observations of radio frequency ammonia, and water maser emission lines in the S235 massive star forming region. Via spectral analyses of main, hyperfine and multi-transitional ammonia lines we explored the distribution of temperature and column density in the dense gas in the S235 and S235AB star forming region. The most remarkable result of the mapping observations is the discovery of high density gas in inter-core bridges which physically link dense molecular cores that house young proto-stellar clusters. The presence of dense gas implies the potential for future star formation within the system of cores and gas bridges. Cluster formation implies collapse and the continuous physical links, also seen in re-imaged archival CS and $^{13}$CO maps, suggests a common origin to the molecular cores housing these clusters, i.e the structure condensed from a single, larger parent cloud, brought about by the influence of a local expanding H${\rm II}$ region. An ammonia absorption feature co-locating with the center of the extended H${\rm II}$ region may be attributed to an older gas component left over from the period prior to formation of the H${\rm II}$ region. Our observations also detail known and new sites of water maser emission, highlighting regions of active ongoing star formation.
Magellanic Bridge C (MB-C) is a metal-poor ($\sim$1/5 $Z_{\odot}$) low-density star-forming region located 59 kpc away in the Magellanic Bridge, offering a resolved view of the star formation process in conditions different to the Galaxy. From Atacama Large Millimetre Array CO (1-0) observations, we detect molecular clumps associated to candidate young stellar objects (YSOs), pre-main sequence (PMS) stars, and filamentary structure identified in far-infrared imaging. YSOs and PMS stars form in molecular gas having densities between 17-200 $M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$, and have ages between $\lesssim$…
Observations with modern instruments such as Herschel reveal that stars form clustered inside filamentary arms of ~1 pc length embedded in Giant Molecular Clouds. On smaller scales (~1000 au), observations of, e.g., IRAS 16293--2422 show signs of filamentary `bridge' structures connecting young protostars in their birth environment. We investigate the formation of a deeply embedded triple protostellar system, and characterize its connection to the filamentary structure present on GMC scales. Using the magnetohydrodynamical code RAMSES, we carry out zoom-in simulations of low-mass star formatio…
In order to test a recent hypothesis that the dispersion in the Schmidt-Kennicutt law arises from variations in the evolutionary stage of star forming molecular clouds, we compared molecular gas and recent star formation in an early-phase merger galaxy pair, Taffy I (UGC\ 12915/UGC\ 12914, VV\ 254) which went through a direct collision 20 Myr ago and whose star forming regions are expected to have similar ages. Narrow-band Pa-alpha image is obtained using the ANIR near-infrared camera on the mini-TAO 1m telescope. The image enables us to derive accurate star formation rates within the galaxy d…
The Magellanic Bridge is the nearest low-metallicity, tidally stripped environment, offering a unique high-resolution view of physical conditions in merging and forming galaxies. In this paper we present analysis of candidate massive young stellar objects (YSOs), i.e., {\it in situ, current} massive star formation (MSF) in the Bridge using {\it Spitzer} mid-IR and complementary optical and near-IR photometry. While we definitely find YSOs in the Bridge, the most massive are $\sim10 M_\odot$, $\ll45 M_\odot$ found in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The intensity of MSF in the Bridge also appe…
The Taffy system (UGC 12914/15) consists of two massive spiral galaxies which had a head-on collision about 20 Myr ago. New sensitive, high-resolution CO(1-0) observations of the Taffy system with the IRAM PdBI are presented. About 25% of the total interferometric CO luminosity stems from the bridge region. Assuming a Galactic N(H2)/ICO conversion factor for the galactic disks and a third of this value for the bridge gas, about 10% of the molecular gas mass is located in the bridge region. The giant HII region close to UGC 12915 is located at the northern edge of the high-surface brightness gi…
Arp194 is a system of recently collided galaxies, where the southern galaxy (S) passed through the gaseous disc of the northern galaxy (N) which in turn consists of two close components. This system is of special interest due to the presence of regions of active star-formation in the bridge between galaxies, the brightest of which (the region A) has a size of at least 4 kpc. We obtained three spectral slices of the system for different slit positions at the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS. We estimated the radial distribution of line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion as well as the intensitie…
In major galaxy mergers, the orbits of stars are violently perturbed, and gas is torqued to the centre, diluting the gas metallicity and igniting a starburst. In this paper, we study the gas dynamics in and around merging galaxies using a series of cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) zoom-in simulations. We find that the gas bridge connecting the merging galaxies pre-coalescence is dominated by turbulent pressure, with turbulent Mach numbers peaking at values of 1.6-3.3. This implies that bridges are dominated by supersonic turbulence, and are thus ideal candidates for studying the impac…
We have identified 1027 star forming complexes in a sample of 46 galaxies from the Spirals, Bridges, and Tails (SB&T) sample of interacting galaxies, and 693 star forming complexes in a sample of 38 non-interacting spiral (NIS) galaxies in $8\rm{μm}$ observations from the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera. We have used archival multi-wavelength UV-to IR observations to fit the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) of our clumps with the Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (CIGALE) using a double exponentially declined star formation history (SFH). We derive SFRs, stellar masses, ages and frac…
We develop a Bayesian Machine Learning framework called BINGO (Bayesian INference for Galactic archaeOlogy) centred around a Bayesian neural network. After being trained on the APOGEE and \emph{Kepler} asteroseismic age data, BINGO is used to obtain precise relative stellar age estimates with uncertainties for the APOGEE stars. We carefully construct a training set to minimise bias and apply BINGO to a stellar population that is similar to our training set. We then select the 17,305 stars with ages from BINGO and reliable kinematic properties obtained from \textit{Gaia} DR2. By combining the a…
We assemble an unbiased sample of 29 galaxies with [O II] $λ3727$ and/or [O III] $λ5007$ detections at $z < 0.15$ from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) Pilot Survey (HPS). HPS finds galaxies without pre-selection based on their detected emission lines via integral field spectroscopy. Sixteen of these objects were followed up with the second-generation, low resolution spectrograph (LRS2) on the upgraded Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Oxygen abundances were then derived via strong emission lines using a Bayesian approach. We find most of the galaxies fall along the mass-metall…
We present the KMOS-CLASH (K-CLASH) survey, a K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) survey of the spatially-resolved gas properties and kinematics of 191 (predominantly blue) H$α$-detected galaxies at $0.2 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.6$ in field and cluster environments. K-CLASH targets galaxies in four Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) fields in the KMOS $IZ$-band, over $7'$ radius ($\approx2$-$3$ Mpc) fields-of-view. K-CLASH aims to study the transition of star-forming galaxies from turbulent, highly star-forming disc-like and peculiar systems at $z\approx1$-$3$, to the co…

Star-formation in the outer Galaxy is thought to be different from the inner Galaxy, as it is subject to different environmental parameters such as metallicity, interstellar radiation field, or mass surface density that all change with Galactocentric radius. We therefore aimed at getting a more detailed view on the structure of the outer Galaxy, determining physical properties for a large number of star forming clumps and understanding star-formation outside the Solar circle. We use pointed $^{12}$CO(2-1) observations conducted with the APEX telescope to determine the velocity components towar…
The role of gas in the mass assembly at the nuclei of galaxies is still subject to some uncertainty. Stellar nuclear discs bridge the gap between the large-scale galaxy and the central massive objects that reside there. Using a high resolution simulation of a galaxy forming out of gas cooling and settling into a disc, we study the formation and properties of nuclear discs. Gas, driven to the centre by a bar, settles into a rotating star-forming nuclear disc (ND). This ND is thinner, younger, kinematically cooler, and more metal-rich than the surrounding bar. The ND is elliptical and orthogonal…
We present a multi-wavelength data analysis of the extended star-forming region S235 (hereafter E-S235), where two molecular clouds are present. In E-S235, using the 12CO (1-0) and 13CO (1-0) line data, a molecular cloud linked with the site "S235main" is traced in a velocity range [-24, -18] km s^{-1}, while the other one containing the sites S235A, S235B, and S235C (hereafter "S235ABC") is depicted in a velocity range [-18, -13] km s^{-1}. In the velocity space, these two clouds are separated by ~4 km s^{-1}, and are interconnected by a lower intensity intermediate velocity emission, tracing…
We use $N$-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of encounters between an early-type galaxy (ETG) and a late-type galaxy (LTG) to study the effects of hot halo gas on the evolution for a case with the mass ratio of the ETG to LTG of 2:1 and the closest approach distance of $\sim$100 kpc. We find that the dynamics of the cold disk gas in the tidal bridge and the amount of the newly formed stars depend strongly on the existence of a gas halo. In the run of interacting galaxies not having a hot gas halo, the gas and stars accreted into the ETG do not include newly formed stars. However…
N44 is the second active site of high mass star formation next to R136 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We carried out a detailed analysis of HI at 60 arcsec resolution by using the ATCA & Parkes data. We presented decomposition of the HI emission into two velocity components (the L- and D-components) with the velocity separation of 60 km s$^{-1}$. In addition, we newly defined the I-component whose velocity is intermediate between the L- and D-components. The D-component was used to derive the rotation curve of the LMC disk, which is consistent with the stellar rotation curve (Alves et al…
We present the results of optical long-slit spectral observations of interacting system Arp305 carried out at the 6m telescope BTA at the SAO RAS: the radial variation of gas kinematics and oxygen abundance. This study continues the series of spectral observations of tidal debris in the interacting galaxies. Here we pay special attention to the star-forming region between the interacting galaxies - a tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidate. This star-forming system appears to be gravitationally bound or close to this condition. We show that TDG is metal poor in comparison to the parental galaxy. It…

Stephan's Quintet (SQ), the prototypical compact group of galaxies in the local Universe, has been observed with the imaging Fourier transform spectrometer SITELLE, attached to the CFHT, to perform a deep search for intergalactic star-forming emission. We present the extended ionised gaseous structures detected and analyse their kinematical properties. The large field of view (11'x11') and the spectral ranges of SITELLE have allowed a thorough study of the entire galaxy system, its interaction history and the main properties of the ionised gas. The observations have revealed complex 3D strands…
Measuring polarization from thermal dust emission can provide constraints on the magnetic field structure around embedded protostars. However, interpreting the observations is challenging without models that consistently account for both the complexity of the protostellar birth environment and polarization mechanisms. We aim to provide a better understanding with a focus on bridge-like structures such as that observed towards the protostellar multiple IRAS 16293--2422 by comparing synthetic polarization maps of thermal reemission with observations. We analyze the magnetic field properties asso…
The cosmic evolution of bias of different source populations with underlying dark matter density field in post reionization era can shed light on large scale structures. Studying the angular and spatial distribution of different compact sources using deep radio catalogue at low-frequency is essential to understand the matter distribution of the present Universe. Here, we investigate the relationship of luminous matter with their host dark matter haloes by measuring the angular and spatial clustering of sources (two-point statistics), using deep radio observation of ELAIS N1 (EN1) field with up…
Context. The interactions between the SMC and LMC created the Magellanic Bridge, a stream of gas and stars pulled out of the SMC towards the LMC about 150 Myr ago. The tidal counterpart of this structure, which should include a trailing arm, has been predicted by models but no compelling observational evidence has confirmed the Counter-Bridge so far. Aims. The main goal of this work is to find the stellar counterpart of the Magellanic Bridge and Counter-Bridge. We use star clusters in the SMC outskirts as they provide 6D phase-space vector, age and metallicity that help characterise the outski…
