The so-called quantum metric tensor is a band-structure invariant whose measure corresponds to the quantum distance between nearby states in the Hilbert space, characterizing the geometry of the underlying quantum states. In the context of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases, we recently proposed that the quantum metric has a partial control over all those superfluid properties that depend explicitly on the mass of the superfluid carriers, i.e., the effective-mass tensor of the corresponding (two- or many-body) bound state. Here we scrutinize this finding by analyzing the collective phase and amplitude excitations at zero temperature. In particular to the Goldstone mode, we present extensive numerical calculations for the Weyl and Rashba spin-orbit couplings, revealing that, despite being small, the geometric contribution is solely responsible for the nonmonotonic evolution of the sound velocity in the BCS-BEC crossover.
Spontaneous symmetry breaking is a central paradigm of elementary particle physics, magnetism, superfluidity and superconductivity. According to Goldstone's theorem, phase transitions that break continuous symmetries lead to the existence of gapless excitations in the long-wavelength limit. These Goldstone modes generally dominate the low-energy excitations, showing that symmetry breaking has a profound impact on the physical properties of matter. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of the elementary excitations in a homogeneous strongly interacting Fermi gas through the crossover f…
We consider a generic Hamiltonian that is suitable for describing a uniform BCS superfluid on a lattice with a two-point basis, and study its collective excitations at zero temperature. For this purpose, we first derive an effective-Gaussian action for the pairing fluctuations, and then extract the low-energy dispersion relations for the in-phase Goldstone and out-of-phase Leggett modes along with the corresponding amplitude (i.e., the so-called Higgs) ones. We find that while the Goldstone mode is gapless at zero momentum and propagating in general, the Leggett mode becomes undamped only with…
In fermionic superfluids that are charge neutral, Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes also known as Anderson-Bogoliubov modes emerge as a result of spontaneous symmetry breaking. Here, we discuss DC transport properties of such NG modes through a quantum point contact. We show that contrary to a naive view that enhancement of the phase stiffness may suppress transport of the NG modes, there must be an anomalous contribution that survives at low temperature. This contribution originates from the conversion process between the condensate and NG mode. We find that within the BCS regime the anomalous contr…
We derive the Josephson relation for a dilute Bose gas in the framework of an auxiliary-field resummation of the theory in terms of the normal- and anomalous-density condensates. The mean-field phase diagram of this theory features two critical temperatures, T_c and $T^*, associated with the presence in the system of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and superfluid state, respectively. In this context, the Josephson relation shows that the superfluid density is related to a second order parameter, the square of the anomalous-density condensate. This is in contrast with the corresponding resul…
We study collective modes of superfluid Bose gases in optical lattices at commensurate fillings. We focus on the vicinity of the quantum phase transition to the Mott insulator, where there exists the Higgs amplitude mode in addition to the Nambu-Goldstone phase mode associated with the spontaneous U(1) symmetry breaking. We analyze finite-temperature effects on the damping of the collective modes by using an effective spin-1 model and the field theoretical methods based on the finite-temperature Green's function. We calculate the damping rates up to 1-loop order and evaluate them analytically …
Beliaev damping in a superfluid is the decay of a collective excitation into two lower frequency collective excitations; it represents the only decay mode for a bosonic collective excitation in a superfluid at T = 0. The standard treatment for this decay assumes a linear spectrum, which in turn implies that the final state momenta must be collinear to the initial state. We extend this treatment, showing that the inclusion of a gradient term in the Hamiltonian yields a realistic spectrum for the bosonic excitations; we then derive a formula for the decay rate of such excitations, and show that …
The Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes in a nonrelativistic system can be classified into two types from their characteristic features: being of either an odd (type I) or an even (type II) power energy-momentum dispersion. Conventionally, the type-II NG modes may universally arise from spontaneous breaking of noncommutative symmetry pairs. Here, we predict a novel type of quadratically dispersed NG modes that emerges in mixed $s$ and $p$ band Bose superfluids in an optical lattice and, unlike the conventional type-II NG modes, cannot be solely interpreted with the celebrated symmetry-based argument. I…
We analyze the contributions of Nambu-Goldstone modes to the shear viscosity of a superfluid atomic Fermi gas close to unitarity. We show that the low temperature experimental values of the shear viscosity to entropy ratio, $η/s$, are reproduced considering an effective shear viscosity which takes into account the collisions among Nambu-Goldstone bosons and the finite size of the optical trap. We predict that, for $T \lesssim 0.1 T_F$, $η/s$ should correlate with the size of the trap and linearly decrease with decreasing temperature. For $T \gtrsim 0.1 T_F$, we find agreement with the experime…
We consider the density response of a trapped two-component Fermi gas. Combining the Bogoliubov-deGennes method with the random phase approximation allows the study of both collective and single particle excitations. Calculating the density response across a wide range of interactions, we observe a crossover from a weakly interacting pair vibration mode to a strongly interacting Goldstone mode. The crossover is associated with a depressed collective mode frequency and an increased damping rate, in agreement with density response experiments performed in strongly interacting atomic gases.
We revisit certain subtleties of renormalization that arise when one derives a low-energy effective action by integrating out the heavy fields of a more complete theory. Usually these subtleties are circumvented by matching some physical observables, such as scattering amplitudes, but a more involved procedure is required if one is interested in deriving the effective theory to all orders in the light fields (but still to fixed order in the derivative expansion). As a concrete example, we study the $U(1)$ Goldstone low-energy effective theory that describes the spontaneously broken phase of a …
By studying the 2-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Bose-Hubbard model, we show the existence of topological Higgs amplitude modes in the strongly interacting superfluid phase. Using the slave boson approach, we find that, in the large filling limit, the Higgs excitations and the Goldstone excitations above the ground state are well decoupled, and both of them exhibit nontrivial topology inherited from the underlying noninteracting bands. At finite fillings, they become coupled at high energies; nevertheless, the topology of these modes are unchanged. Moreover, based on an effective action anal…
We derive the underlying finite temperature theory which describes Fermi gas superfluidity with population imbalance in a homogeneous system. We compute the pair formation temperature and superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ and superfluid density in a manner consistent with the standard ground state equations, and thereby present a complete phase diagram. Finite temperature stabilizes superfluidity, as manifested by two solutions for $T_c$, or by low $T$ instabilities. At unitarity the polarized state is an ``intermediate temperature superfluid".
Achieving a higher superfluid transition $T_c$ has been a goal for the fields of superconductivity and atomic Fermi gases. Here we propose that, by using mixed dimensionality, one may achieve ultra high temperature superfluids in two component atomic Fermi gases, where one component feels a regular three-dimensional (3D) continuum space, while the other is subject to a 1D optic lattice potential. Via tuning the lattice spacing and trap depth, one can effectively raise the Fermi level dramatically upon pairing so that superfluidity may occur at an ultra high temperature (in units of Fermi energ…
We study the low-energy excitations of the Bose-Hubbard model in the strongly-interacting superfluid phase using a Gutzwiller approach and extract the single-particle and single-hole excitation amplitudes for each mode. We report emergent mode-dependent particle-hole symmetry on specific arc-shaped lines in the phase diagram connecting the well-known Lorentz-invariant limits of the Bose-Hubbard model. By tracking the in-phase particle-hole symmetric oscillations of the order parameter, we provide an answer to the long-standing question about the fate of the pure amplitude Higgs mode away from …
We theoretically investigate the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluidity in a three dimensional atomic Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling near a broad Feshbach resonance. We show that within mean-field theory the FF superfluid state is always more favorable than the standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid state when an in-plane Zeeman field is applied. We present a qualitative finite-temperature phase diagram near resonance and argue that the predicted FF superfluid is observable with experimentally attainable temperatures (i.e., $T\sim0.2T_{F}$, where $T_{F}$ is the …
A supersolid is a counter-intuitive state of matter that combines the frictionless flow of a superfluid with the crystal-like periodic density modulation of a solid. Since the first prediction in the 1950s, experimental efforts to realize this state have focussed mainly on Helium, where supersolidity remains elusive. Recently, supersolidity has also been studied intensively in ultracold quantum gases, and some of its defining properties have been induced in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and BECs coupled to two crossed optical cavities. However, the periodicity of the crys…
We present a numerical study of the dynamic response of a confined superfluid Fermi gas to a rapid change of the scattering length (i.e., an interaction quench). Based on a fully microscopic time-dependent density-matrix approach within the full Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism that includes a 3D harmonic confinement we simulate and identify the emergence of a Goldstone mode of the BCS gap in a cigar-shaped $^6$Li gas. By analyzing this Goldstone mode over a wide range of parameters, we show that its excitation spectrum is gapless and that its main frequency is not fixed by the trapping potentia…
We consider rotating finite size vortex arrays in Bose-Einstein condensates that are confined by cylindrically symmetric external potentials. We show that such systems possess two exact Nambu-Goldstone zero modes associated with two spontaneously broken continuous symmetries of the system. We verify our analytical result via direct numerical diagonalizations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We conclude by comparing rotating vortex lattices in superfluids to supersolids and discrete time crystals.
We develop a microscopic theory of dynamic structure factor to describe the Bogoliubov-Anderson-Goldstone phonon mode and its damping rate in a strongly interacting Fermi gas at finite temperature. It is based on a density functional approach - the so-called superfluid local density approximation. The accuracy of the theory is quantitatively examined by comparing the theoretical predictions with the recent experimental measurements for the local dynamic structure factor of a nearly homogeneous unitary Fermi gas at low transferred momentum {[}S. Hoinka \textit{et al.}, Nat. Phys. \textbf{13}, 9…
We study a paradigmatic model in field theory where a global $U(1)$ and scale symmetries are jointly and spontaneously broken. At zero density the model has a non-compact flat direction, which at finite density needs to be slightly lifted. The resulting low-energy spectrum is composed by a standard gapless $U(1)$ Nambu-Goldstone mode and a light dilaton whose gap is determined by the chemical potential and corrected by the couplings. Even though $U(1)$ and scale symmetries commute, there is a mixing between the $U(1)$ Nambu-Goldstone and the dilaton that is crucial to recover the expected dyna…

We study possible superfluid states of the Rashba spin-orbit coupled (SOC) spinor bosons with the spin anisotropic interaction $ λ$ hopping in a square lattice. The frustrations from the non-abelian flux due to the SOC leads to novel spin-bond correlated superfluids. By using a recently developed systematic "order from quantum disorder" analysis, we not only determine the true quantum ground state, but also evaluate the mass gap in the spin sector at $ λ< 1 $, especially compute the the excitation spectrum of the Goldstone mode in the spin sector at $ λ=1 $ which would be quadratic without the…
We examine two dimensional mixture of single-component fermions and dipolar bosons. We calculate the self-enregies of the fermions in the normal state and the Cooper pair channel by including first order vertex correction to derive a modified Eliashberg equation. We predict appearance of superfluids with various non-standard pairing symmetries at experimentally feasible transition temperatures within the strong-coupling limit of the Eliashberg equation. Excitations in these superfluids are anyonic and follow non-Abelian statistics.
The Anderson-Bogoliubov branch of collective excitations in a condensed Fermi gas is treated using the effective bosonic action of Gaussian pair fluctuations. The spectra of collective excitations are treated for finite temperature and momentum throughout the BCS-BEC crossover. The obtained spectra explain, both qualitatively and quantitatively, recent experimental results on Goldstone modes in atomic Fermi superfluids.
We investigate the Zeeman field effects on the bulk superfluid properties and the collective modes in two-dimensional (2D) attractive atomic Fermi gases with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. In the presence of a large spin-orbit coupling, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition to a topological superfluid state at a critical Zeeman field. We show that the nonanalyticities of the thermodynamic functions as well as other physical quantities at the quantum phase transition originate from the infrared singularities caused by the gapless fermionic spectrum. The same argument applies also to…
We theoretically investigate superfluidity in a strongly interacting Fermi gas confined to two dimensions at finite temperature. Using a Gaussian pair fluctuation theory in the superfluid phase, we calculate the superfluid density and determine the critical temperature and chemical potential at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We propose that the transition can be unambiguously demonstrated in cold-atom experiments by stirring the superfluid Fermi gas using a red detuned laser beam, to identify the characteristic jump in the local Landau critical velocity at the superfluid-norma…
Pairing between fermions that attract each other, reveal itself to the macroscopic world in the form of superfluidity. Since the discovery of fermionic superfluidity, intense search has been going on to find various unconventional forms of fermion pairing as well as to increase the transition temperature. Here, we show that a two dimensional mixture of single-component fermions and dipolar bosons allows to reach experimentally feasible superfluid transition temperatures for non-standard pairing symmetries. Excitations in these superfluids are anyonic and their statistics depends on the order o…
We present a closed-form expression for the time dynamics of a balanced Fermi superfluid with s-wave pairing and Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling. Solving the associated self-consistency conditions for an initial number density given by a Gaussian and an initial gap containing a vortex dipole, we show that Rashba SO coupling results in precession of the vortex dipole. The integrated self-consistent gap decays as a function of time, characterising a "transient Fermi superfluid". Our analytic solution forms a starting point for studies of vortex dynamics -- in particular braiding of Majorana ferm…
In this letter we show that the vortex lattice structure in the Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture can undergo a sequence of structure transitions when the Fermi superfluid is tuned from the BCS regime to the BEC regime. This is due to different vortex core structure of the Fermi superfluid in the BCS regime and in the BEC regime. In the former the vortex core is nearly filled, while the density at the vortex core gradually decreases until it empties out at the BEC regime. Therefore, with the density-density interaction between the Bose and the Fermi superfluids, the two sets of vortex lattices int…
We study the collective excitations, i.e., the Goldstone (phase) mode and the Higgs (amplitude) mode, near the superfluid--Mott glass quantum phase transition in a two-dimensional system of disordered bosons. Using Monte Carlo simulations as well as an inhomogeneous quantum mean-field theory with Gaussian fluctuations, we show that the Higgs mode is strongly localized for all energies, leading to a noncritical scalar response. In contrast, the lowest-energy Goldstone mode undergoes a striking delocalization transition as the system enters the superfluid phase. We discuss the generality of thes…
We explore novel features of a nonrelativistic fermionic superfluid in which the pairing interaction includes a contribution from the exchange of a dynamical bosonic mode. We show that the dynamical boson exchange (DBE), which causes a retarded pairing interaction and thus violates the Galilean invariance of the fermion sector, generically leads to a quantum reduction of the superfluid density and hence a nonzero normal fraction even at zero temperature. For spin-singlet pairing, the DBE also leads to a nonvanishing spin susceptibility at zero temperature, providing a mechanism for the coexist…
We study the nature of superfluid pairing in imbalanced Fermi mixtures in two spatial dimensions. We present evidence that the combined effect of Fermi surface mismatch and order parameter fluctuations of the superfluid condensate can lead to continuous quantum phase transitions from a normal Fermi mixture to an intermediate Sarma-Liu-Wilczek superfluid with two gapless Fermi surfaces -- even when mean-field theory (incorrectly) predicts a first order transition to a phase-separated "Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer plus excess fermions" ground state. We propose a mechanism for non-Fermi liquid behav…
We analyse a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) mixed with a superfluid two-component Fermi gas in the whole BCS-BEC cross-over. Using a quasiparticle random phase approximation combined with Beliaev theory to describe the Fermi superfluid and the BEC respectively, we show that the single particle and collective excitations of the Fermi gas give rise to an induced interaction between the bosons, which varies strongly with momentum and frequency. It diverges at the sound mode of the Fermi superfluid, resulting in a sharp avoided crossing feature and a corresponding sign change of the interaction en…
We investigate the possibility of superfluid/ferromagnet/superfluid (SFS)-junction in a superfluid Fermi gas. To examine this possibility in a simple manner, we consider an attractive Hubbard model at $T=0$ within the mean-field theory. When a potential barrier is embedded in a superfluid Fermi gas with population imbalance ($N_\uparrow>N_\downarrow$, where $N_σ$ is the number of atoms with pseudospin $σ=\uparrow,\downarrow$), this barrier is shown to be {\it magnetized} in the sense that excess $\uparrow$-spin atoms are localized around it. The resulting superfluid Fermi gas is spatially divi…
We present a numerical study of a confined ultracold Fermi gas showing that the Goldstone mode of the BCS gap is directly visible in the dynamics of the single-particle excitations. To this end, we investigate the low-energy dynamic response of a confined Fermi gas to a rapid change of the scattering length (i.e., an interaction quench). Based on a fully microscopic time-dependent density-matrix approach within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism that includes a 3D harmonic confinement we simulate and identify the emergence of the Goldstone mode in a cigar-shaped $^6$Li gas. We show that the qu…
We present in a local form the time dependent effective description of a superfluid Fermi liquid which includes Landau damping effects at $T\neq 0$. This is achieved by the introduction of an additional variable, the quasiparticle distribution function, which obeys a simple kinetic equation. The transport equation is coupled with first order equations for the Goldstone mode and the particle density. We prove that a main feature of this formulation is its Hamiltonian structure relative to a certain Poisson bracket. We construct the Hamiltonian to quadratic order.
Higgs and Goldstone modes are possible collective modes of an order parameter upon spontaneously breaking a continuous symmetry. Whereas the low-energy Goldstone (phase) mode is always stable, additional symmetries are required to prevent the Higgs (amplitude) mode from rapidly decaying into low-energy excitations. In high-energy physics, where the Higgs boson has been found after a decades-long search, the stability is ensured by Lorentz invariance. In the realm of condensed--matter physics, particle--hole symmetry can play this role and a Higgs mode has been observed in weakly-interacting su…
In this letter, to reveal the effect of quasi-particle interactions in a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, we consider the lifetime of quasi-particle of Bose superfluid due to its interaction with quasi-particles in Fermi superfluid. We find that this damping rate, i.e. inverse of the lifetime, has quite different threshold behavior at the BCS and the BEC side of the Fermi superfluid. The damping rate is a constant nearby the threshold momentum in the BCS side, while it increases rapidly in the BEC side. This is because in the BCS side the decay processe is restricted by constant density-of-state…
Spin-triplet p-wave superfluids of single-species (or spin-polarized) fermionic atoms is a topological superfluid. In 2D such a superfluid supports zero-energy topological Majorana fermion excitations in order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. In 3D these superfluids support topologically protected Dirac points in the bulk spectrum and flat surface Majorana arcs. Despite the promise, creating a spin-triplet p-wave single-species fermionic superfluid either from direct p-wave Feshbach resonance or indirectly from the recently proposed artificial spin-orbit and Zeeman coupling…
We study the Landau damping in Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture at finite temperature. We find that at low temperature, the Landau damping rate will be exponentially suppressed at both the BCS side and the BEC side of Fermi superfluid. The momentum dependence of the damping rate is obtained, and it is quite different from the BCS side to the BEC side. The relations between our result and collective mode experiment in the recently realized Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture are also discussed.
Access to collective excitations lies at the heart of our understanding of quantum many-body systems. We study the Higgs and Goldstone modes in a supersolid quantum gas that is created by coupling a Bose-Einstein condensate symmetrically to two optical cavities. The cavity fields form a U(1)-symmetric order parameter that can be modulated and monitored along both quadratures in real time. This enables us to measure the excitation energies across the superfluid-supersolid phase transition, establish their amplitude and phase nature, as well as characterize their dynamics from an impulse respons…
We study polaron excitations induced by an impurity interacting with a two-dimensional $p+ip$ Fermi superfluid. As the Fermi-Fermi pairing interaction is tuned, the background Fermi superfluid undergoes a topological phase transition. We show that such a transition is accompanied by a discontinuity in the second derivative of the polaron energy, regardless of the impurity-fermion interaction. We also identify a polaron to trimer crossover when the Fermi superfluid is in the strongly interacting, thus topologically trivial, regime. However, the trimer state is metastable against the molecular s…
We present a superfluid theory of a polarized dipolar Fermi gas. For two dipolar molecules each of which consists of two atoms with positive charge and negative charge, we derive an effective dipole-dipole pairing interaction. Using this pairing interaction, we show that the resulting BCS gap equation is not suffered from the well-known ultraviolet divergence, so that one can quantitatively predict superfluid properties of a dipolar Fermi gas. Using this cutoff-free superfluid theory, we examine the symmetry of the superfluid order parameter at T=0. We also discuss the deformation of the Fermi…
We investigate the nature of superfluid pairing in a strongly interacting Fermi gas near orbital Feshbach resonances with spin-population imbalance in three dimensions, which can be well described by a two-band or two-channel model. We show that a Sarma superfluid with gapless single-particle excitations is favored in the closed channel at large imbalance. It is thermodynamically stable against the formation of an inhomogeneous Fulde\textendash Ferrell\textendash Larkin\textendash Ovchinnikov superfluid and features a well-defined Goldstone-Anderson-Bogoliubov phonon mode and a massive Leggett…
We discuss the evolution from BCS to Bose superfluidity for ultracold fermions in two-dimensions and in the presence of simultaneous spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. We analyze several thermodynamic properties to characterize different superfluid phases including pressure, compressibility, induced polarization, and spin susceptibility. Furthermore, we compute the momentum distribution and construct topological invariants for each of the superfluid phases.
Topological Fermi superfluids have played the central role in various fields of physics. However, all previous studies focus on the cases where Cooper pairs have zero center-of-mass momenta (i.e. normal superfluids). The topology of Fulde-Ferrell superfluids with nonzero momentum pairings have never been explored until recent findings that Fulde-Ferrell superfluids in a spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas can accommodate Majorana fermions in real space in low dimensions and Weyl fermions in momentum space in three dimension. In this review, we first discuss the mechanism of pairings in spin-orbit cou…
We investigate the stability of $π$-phase in a polarized superfluid Fermi gas ($N_\uparrow>N_\downarrow$, where $N_σ$ is the number of atoms in the hyperfine state described by pseudospin-$σ$). In our previous paper [T. Kashimura, S. Tsuchiya, and Y. Ohashi, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 82}, 033617 (2010)], we showed that excess atoms ($ΔN=N_\uparrow-N_\downarrow$) localized around a potential barrier embedded in the system induces the $π$-phase at T=0, where the phase of superfluid order parameter differ by $π$ across the junction. In this paper, we extend our previous work to include temperature effect…
The p-wave superfluid is characterized by nontrivial topological characteristics essential for fault-tolerant quantum state manipulation. However, the practical realization of the p-wave state remains a challenging problem. We study the s- and p-wave superfluidity in mixtures of fermionic and spinor bosonic gases and derive a general set of the gap equations for these superfluid states. Numerically solving the gap equations for the s-wave state, we quantify the physical conditions for the realization of the pure p-wave state in a well-controlled environment of atomic physics in the absence of …
In this work, we present a theoretical study for the collective oscillation modes, i.e. quadrupole, radial and axial mode, of a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in harmonic trapping potentials with cylindrical symmetry of experimental interest. To this end, we start from the coupled superfluid hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures and use the scaling theory that has been developed for a coupled system. The collective oscillation modes of Bose…
A superfluid-insulator transition is known to occur in strongly disordered Fermi gases, in both the BCS and BEC regimes; here, we address the properties of this transition across the BEC-BCS crossover. We argue that the critical disorder strength at which superfluidity is lost changes non-monotonically with detuning from Feshbach resonance, and that a reentrant superfluid phase arises for detunings near the fermionic mobility edge. Our analysis of the intermediate regime is quantitatively valid for narrow resonances and near four dimensions, and provides a simple physical picture of this regim…

Using the $\hbar$-expansion of the Green's function of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equation, we extend the second-order Thomas-Fermi approximation to generalized superfluid Fermi systems by including the density-dependent effective mass and the spin-orbit potential. We first implement and examine the full correction terms over different energy intervals of the quasiparticle spectra in calculations of finite nuclei. Final applications of this generalized Thomas-Fermi method are intended for various inhomogeneous superfluid Fermi systems.
We consider quantized vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and three-component Fermi gases with attractive interactions. In these systems, the vortex core can be either empty (normal in the fermion case) or filled with another superfluid. We determine critical values of the parameters -- chemical potentials, scattering lengths and, for Fermi gases, temperature -- at which a phase transition between the two types of vortices occurs. Population imbalance can lead to superfluid core (coreless) vorticity in multicomponent superfluids which otherwise support only usual vortices. For …
We investigate the effect exerted by spin-polarized fermions on the interaction between superfluid bosons for a Bose-Fermi mixture residing on an optical lattice, with particular emphasis on the possibility of an induced phase-separation. Using a set of microscopic parameters relevant to a $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb mixture, we show how the phase-separation criterion may be directly probed by means of the critical superfluid velocity of the bosonic condensate. We report quantitative results for the magnitude of the superfluid velocity and its dependence on the trap depth, the boson-fermion interaction…
We theoretically investigate a spin-orbit coupled $s$-wave superfluid Fermi gas, to examine the time evolution of the system, after an $s$-wave pairing interaction is replaced by a $p$-wave one at $t=0$. In our recent paper, we proposed that this manipulation may realize a $p$-wave superfluid Fermi gas, because the $p$-wave pair amplitude that is induced in the $s$-wave superfluid state by a parity-broken antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction gives a non-vanishing $p$-wave superfluid order parameter, immediately after the $p$-wave interaction is turned on. In this paper, using a time-dependent …
