The rate of electron transfer between a molecular species and a metal, each at a different local temperature, is examined theoretically through implementation of a bithermal (characterized by two temperatures) Marcus formalism. Expressions for the rate constant and the electronic contribution to a heat transfer mechanism which is induced by the temperature gradient between molecule and metal are constructed. The system of coupled dynamical equations describing the electronic and thermal currents are derived and examined over diverse ranges of reaction geometries and temperature gradients. It is shown that electron transfer across the molecule-metal interface is associated with heat transfer and that the electron exchange between metal and molecule makes a distinct contribution to the interfacial heat conduction even when the net electronic current vanishes.
In this work we theoretically study steady state thermoelectric transport through a single-molecule junction with a long chain-like bridge. Electron transmission through the system is computed using a tight-binding model for the bridge. We analyze dependences of thermocurrent on the bridge length in unbiased and biased systems operating within and beyond linear response regime. It is shown that length-dependent thermocurrent is controlled by the lineshape of electron transmission in the interval corresponding to HOMO/LUMO transport channel. Also, it is demonstrated that electron interactions w…
We report chirality-induced current-in-plane magnetoresistance (CIP-MR) in chiral molecule/ferromagnetic metal bilayer at room temperature. The previously reported chiralityinduced current-perpendicular-to-plane magnetoresistance (CPP-MR) originates from the chiral induced spin-selectivity (CISS) effect that needs charge-current passing through the molecule. In contrast, the observed CIP-MR in the present study requires no bias charge current through the molecule. The temperature dependence of CIP-MR suggests thermally induced spin-polarization in the chiral molecules is the key for the observ…
Detection of individual molecules is the ultimate goal of any chemical sensor. In the case of gas detection, such resolution has been achieved in advanced nanoscale electronic solid-state sensors, but it has not been possible so far in integrated photonic devices, where the weak light-molecule interaction is typically hidden by noise. Here, we demonstrate a scheme to generate ultrasensitive down-conversion four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a graphene bipolar-junction-transistor heterogeneous D-shaped fiber. In the communication band, the FWM conversion efficiency can change steeply when the graphene F…
In the present work, we theoretically analyze the steady-state thermoelectric transport through a single-molecule junction with a vibrating bridge. Thermally induced charge current in the system is explored using a nonequilibrium Green's functions formalism. We study combined effects of Coulomb interactions between charge carriers on the bridge and electron-phonon interactions on the thermocurrent beyond the linear response regime. It is shown that electron-vibron interactions may significantly affect both magnitude and direction of the thermocurrent, and vibrational signatures may appear.
The use of opto-thermal molecular energy storage at the nanoscale creates new opportunities for powering future microdevices with flexible synthetic tailorability. Practical application of these molecular materials, however, requires a deeper microscopic understanding of how their behavior is altered by the presence of different types of substrates. Here we present single-molecule resolved scanning tunneling microscopy imaging of thermally- and optically-induced structural transitions in (fulvalene)tetracarbonyldiruthenium molecules adsorbed onto a Ag(100) surface as a prototype system. Both t…
We report on the engineering of broadband quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) emitting at Terahertz (THz) frequencies, which exploit a heterogeneous active region scheme and have a current density dynamic range (Jdr) of 3.2, significantly larger than the state of the art, over a 1.3 THz bandwidth. We demonstrate that the devised broadband lasers operate as THz optical frequency comb synthesizers in continuous wave, with a maximum optical output power of 4 mW (0.73 mW in the comb regime). Measurement of the intermode beatnote map reveals a clear dispersion-compensated frequency comb regime extending …
A theory is developed to describe the coupled transport of energy and charge in networks of electron donor-acceptor sites which are seated in a thermally heterogeneous environment, where the transfer kinetics are dominated by Marcus-type hopping rates. It is found that the coupling of heat and charge transfer in such systems gives rise to exotic transport phenomena which are absent in thermally homogeneous systems and cannot be described by standard thermoelectric relations. Specifically, the directionality and extent of thermal transistor amplification and cyclical electronic currents in a gi…
Motivated by recent experiments, we study the variability of the thermal conductance of single dithiolated alkane molecules of varying length connecting two gold electrodes. For this purpose, we examine (i) the influence of the metal-molecule contact and of the electrode orientation on the thermal conductance of straight alkane chains, (ii) the effect of molecule-internal disorder realized through torsional gauche defects and the behavior upon stretching, and (iii) the modifications resulting from temperature-dependent dynamical variations of the geometry. While we analyze the former two aspec…
