We introduce DIODE, a dataset that contains thousands of diverse high resolution color images with accurate, dense, long-range depth measurements. DIODE (Dense Indoor/Outdoor DEpth) is the first public dataset to include RGBD images of indoor and outdoor scenes obtained with one sensor suite. This is in contrast to existing datasets that focus on just one domain/scene type and employ different sensors, making generalization across domains difficult. The dataset is available for download at http://diode-dataset.org
This manual is intended to provide a detailed description of the DIML/CVL RGB-D dataset. This dataset is comprised of 2M color images and their corresponding depth maps from a great variety of natural indoor and outdoor scenes. The indoor dataset was constructed using the Microsoft Kinect v2, while the outdoor dataset was built using the stereo cameras (ZED stereo camera and built-in stereo camera). Table I summarizes the details of our dataset, including acquisition, processing, format, and toolbox. Refer to Section II and III for more details.
Motion and interaction of social insects (such as ants) have been studied by many researchers to understand the clustering mechanism. Most studies in the field of ant behavior have only focused on indoor environments, while outdoor environments are still underexplored. In this paper, we collect 10 videos of ant colonies from different indoor and outdoor scenes. And we develop an image sequence marking software named VisualMarkData, which enables us to provide annotations of ants in the video. In all 5354 frames, the location information and the identification number of each ant are recorded fo…
A key algorithm for understanding the world is material segmentation, which assigns a label (metal, glass, etc.) to each pixel. We find that a model trained on existing data underperforms in some settings and propose to address this with a large-scale dataset of 3.2 million dense segments on 44,560 indoor and outdoor images, which is 23x more segments than existing data. Our data covers a more diverse set of scenes, objects, viewpoints and materials, and contains a more fair distribution of skin types. We show that a model trained on our data outperforms a state-of-the-art model across dataset…
Visual Place Recognition (VPR) is generally concerned with localizing outdoor images. However, localizing indoor scenes that contain part of an outdoor scene can be of large value for a wide range of applications. In this paper, we introduce Inside Out Visual Place Recognition (IOVPR), a task aiming to localize images based on outdoor scenes visible through windows. For this task we present the new large-scale dataset Amsterdam-XXXL, with images taken in Amsterdam, that consists of 6.4 million panoramic street-view images and 1000 user-generated indoor queries. Additionally, we introduce a new…

In this work we propose a new CNN+LSTM architecture for camera pose regression for indoor and outdoor scenes. CNNs allow us to learn suitable feature representations for localization that are robust against motion blur and illumination changes. We make use of LSTM units on the CNN output, which play the role of a structured dimensionality reduction on the feature vector, leading to drastic improvements in localization performance. We provide extensive quantitative comparison of CNN-based and SIFT-based localization methods, showing the weaknesses and strengths of each. Furthermore, we present …
Commercial visual-inertial odometry (VIO) systems have been gaining attention as cost-effective, off-the-shelf six degrees of freedom (6-DoF) ego-motion tracking methods for estimating accurate and consistent camera pose data, in addition to their ability to operate without external localization from motion capture or global positioning systems. It is unclear from existing results, however, which commercial VIO platforms are the most stable, consistent, and accurate in terms of state estimation for indoor and outdoor robotic applications. We assess four popular proprietary VIO systems (Apple A…

Self-supervised depth estimation for indoor environments is more challenging than its outdoor counterpart in at least the following two aspects: (i) the depth range of indoor sequences varies a lot across different frames, making it difficult for the depth network to induce consistent depth cues, whereas the maximum distance in outdoor scenes mostly stays the same as the camera usually sees the sky; (ii) the indoor sequences contain much more rotational motions, which cause difficulties for the pose network, while the motions of outdoor sequences are pre-dominantly translational, especially fo…

Visual Teach and Repeat has shown relative navigation is a robust and efficient solution for autonomous vision-based path following in difficult environments. Adding additional absolute sensors such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) has the potential to expand the domain of Visual Teach and Repeat to environments where the ability to visually localize is not guaranteed. Our method of lazy mapping and delaying estimation until a path-tracking error is needed avoids the need to estimate absolute states. As a result, map optimization is not required and paths can be driven immediately…
This paper studies unsupervised monocular depth prediction problem. Most of existing unsupervised depth prediction algorithms are developed for outdoor scenarios, while the depth prediction work in the indoor environment is still very scarce to our knowledge. Therefore, this work focuses on narrowing the gap by firstly evaluating existing approaches in the indoor environments and then improving the state-of-the-art design of architecture. Unlike typical outdoor training dataset, such as KITTI with motion constraints, data for indoor environment contains more arbitrary camera movement and short…
We propose Human-centered 4D Scene Capture (HSC4D) to accurately and efficiently create a dynamic digital world, containing large-scale indoor-outdoor scenes, diverse human motions, and rich interactions between humans and environments. Using only body-mounted IMUs and LiDAR, HSC4D is space-free without any external devices' constraints and map-free without pre-built maps. Considering that IMUs can capture human poses but always drift for long-period use, while LiDAR is stable for global localization but rough for local positions and orientations, HSC4D makes both sensors complement each other…
In this paper, we propose a deep learning architecture that produces accurate dense depth for the outdoor scene from a single color image and a sparse depth. Inspired by the indoor depth completion, our network estimates surface normals as the intermediate representation to produce dense depth, and can be trained end-to-end. With a modified encoder-decoder structure, our network effectively fuses the dense color image and the sparse LiDAR depth. To address outdoor specific challenges, our network predicts a confidence mask to handle mixed LiDAR signals near foreground boundaries due to occlusi…

In this paper, we present a visual localization pipeline, namely MegLoc, for robust and accurate 6-DoF pose estimation under varying scenarios, including indoor and outdoor scenes, different time across a day, different seasons across a year, and even across years. MegLoc achieves state-of-the-art results on a range of challenging datasets, including winning the Outdoor and Indoor Visual Localization Challenge of ICCV 2021 Workshop on Long-term Visual Localization under Changing Conditions, as well as the Re-localization Challenge for Autonomous Driving of ICCV 2021 Workshop on Map-based Local…

Self-supervised monocular depth estimation has seen significant progress in recent years, especially in outdoor environments. However, depth prediction results are not satisfying in indoor scenes where most of the existing data are captured with hand-held devices. As compared to outdoor environments, estimating depth of monocular videos for indoor environments, using self-supervised methods, results in two additional challenges: (i) the depth range of indoor video sequences varies a lot across different frames, making it difficult for the depth network to induce consistent depth cues for train…

Automatic image synthesis research has been rapidly growing with deep networks getting more and more expressive. In the last couple of years, we have observed images of digits, indoor scenes, birds, chairs, etc. being automatically generated. The expressive power of image generators have also been enhanced by introducing several forms of conditioning variables such as object names, sentences, bounding box and key-point locations. In this work, we propose a novel deep conditional generative adversarial network architecture that takes its strength from the semantic layout and scene attributes in…

In this paper, we present our deep attention-based classification (DABC) network for robust single image depth prediction, in the context of the Robust Vision Challenge 2018 (ROB 2018). Unlike conventional depth prediction, our goal is to design a model that can perform well in both indoor and outdoor scenes with a single parameter set. However, robust depth prediction suffers from two challenging problems: a) How to extract more discriminative features for different scenes (compared to a single scene)? b) How to handle the large differences of depth ranges between indoor and outdoor datasets?…

We introduce the task of Image-Set Visual Question Answering (ISVQA), which generalizes the commonly studied single-image VQA problem to multi-image settings. Taking a natural language question and a set of images as input, it aims to answer the question based on the content of the images. The questions can be about objects and relationships in one or more images or about the entire scene depicted by the image set. To enable research in this new topic, we introduce two ISVQA datasets - indoor and outdoor scenes. They simulate the real-world scenarios of indoor image collections and multiple ca…
We present a simple but yet effective method for learning distinctive 3D local deep descriptors (DIPs) that can be used to register point clouds without requiring an initial alignment. Point cloud patches are extracted, canonicalised with respect to their estimated local reference frame and encoded into rotation-invariant compact descriptors by a PointNet-based deep neural network. DIPs can effectively generalise across different sensor modalities because they are learnt end-to-end from locally and randomly sampled points. Because DIPs encode only local geometric information, they are robust t…
Recently unsupervised learning of depth from videos has made remarkable progress and the results are comparable to fully supervised methods in outdoor scenes like KITTI. However, there still exist great challenges when directly applying this technology in indoor environments, e.g., large areas of non-texture regions like white wall, more complex ego-motion of handheld camera, transparent glasses and shiny objects. To overcome these problems, we propose a new optical-flow based training paradigm which reduces the difficulty of unsupervised learning by providing a clearer training target and han…

Outlier feature matches and loop-closures that survived front-end data association can lead to catastrophic failures in the back-end optimization of large-scale point cloud based 3D reconstruction. To alleviate this problem, we propose a probabilistic approach for robust back-end optimization in the presence of outliers. More specifically, we model the problem as a Bayesian network and solve it using the Expectation-Maximization algorithm. Our approach leverages on a long-tail Cauchy distribution to suppress outlier feature matches in the odometry constraints, and a Cauchy-Uniform mixture mode…
We present a robust and real-time monocular six degree of freedom visual relocalization system. We use a Bayesian convolutional neural network to regress the 6-DOF camera pose from a single RGB image. It is trained in an end-to-end manner with no need of additional engineering or graph optimisation. The algorithm can operate indoors and outdoors in real time, taking under 6ms to compute. It obtains approximately 2m and 6 degrees accuracy for very large scale outdoor scenes and 0.5m and 10 degrees accuracy indoors. Using a Bayesian convolutional neural network implementation we obtain an estima…
