Recently, there has been growing interest in developing learning-based methods to detect and utilize salient semi-global or global structures, such as junctions, lines, planes, cuboids, smooth surfaces, and all types of symmetries, for 3D scene modeling and understanding. However, the ground truth annotations are often obtained via human labor, which is particularly challenging and inefficient for such tasks due to the large number of 3D structure instances (e.g., line segments) and other factors such as viewpoints and occlusions. In this paper, we present a new synthetic dataset, Structured3D, with the aim of providing large-scale photo-realistic images with rich 3D structure annotations for a wide spectrum of structured 3D modeling tasks. We take advantage of the availability of professional interior designs and automatically extract 3D structures from them. We generate high-quality images with an industry-leading rendering engine. We use our synthetic dataset in combination with real images to train deep networks for room layout estimation and demonstrate improved performance on benchmark datasets.

Placing objects is a fundamental task for domestic service robots (DSRs). Thus, inferring the collision-risk before a placing motion is crucial for achieving the requested task. This problem is particularly challenging because it is necessary to predict what happens if an object is placed in a cluttered designated area. We show that a rule-based approach that uses plane detection, to detect free areas, performs poorly. To address this, we develop PonNet, which has multimodal attention branches and a self-attention mechanism to predict damaging collisions, based on RGBD images. Our method can v…
We present ObamaNet, the first architecture that generates both audio and synchronized photo-realistic lip-sync videos from any new text. Contrary to other published lip-sync approaches, ours is only composed of fully trainable neural modules and does not rely on any traditional computer graphics methods. More precisely, we use three main modules: a text-to-speech network based on Char2Wav, a time-delayed LSTM to generate mouth-keypoints synced to the audio, and a network based on Pix2Pix to generate the video frames conditioned on the keypoints.
Reconstructing 3D objects is an important computer vision task that has wide application in AR/VR. Deep learning algorithm developed for this task usually relies on an unrealistic synthetic dataset, such as ShapeNet and Things3D. On the other hand, existing real-captured object-centric datasets usually do not have enough annotation to enable supervised training or reliable evaluation. In this technical report, we present a photo-realistic object-centric dataset HM3D-ABO. It is constructed by composing realistic indoor scene and realistic object. For each configuration, we provide multi-view RG…
Delivering immersive, 3D experiences for human communication requires a method to obtain 360 degree photo-realistic avatars of humans. To make these experiences accessible to all, only commodity hardware, like mobile phone cameras, should be necessary to capture the data needed for avatar creation. For avatars to be rendered realistically from any viewpoint, we require training images and camera poses from all angles. However, we cannot rely on there being trackable features in the foreground or background of all images for use in estimating poses, especially from the side or back of the head.…

Synthesizing photo-realistic images from a point cloud is challenging because of the sparsity of point cloud representation. Recent Neural Radiance Fields and extensions are proposed to synthesize realistic images from 2D input. In this paper, we present Point2Pix as a novel point renderer to link the 3D sparse point clouds with 2D dense image pixels. Taking advantage of the point cloud 3D prior and NeRF rendering pipeline, our method can synthesize high-quality images from colored point clouds, generally for novel indoor scenes. To improve the efficiency of ray sampling, we propose point-guid…

We present a photo-realistic training and evaluation simulator (Sim4CV) with extensive applications across various fields of computer vision. Built on top of the Unreal Engine, the simulator integrates full featured physics based cars, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and animated human actors in diverse urban and suburban 3D environments. We demonstrate the versatility of the simulator with two case studies: autonomous UAV-based tracking of moving objects and autonomous driving using supervised learning. The simulator fully integrates both several state-of-the-art tracking algorithms with a b…

Style-guided text image generation tries to synthesize text image by imitating reference image's appearance while keeping text content unaltered. The text image appearance includes many aspects. In this paper, we focus on transferring style image's background and foreground color patterns to the content image to generate photo-realistic text image. To achieve this goal, we propose 1) a content-style cross attention based pixel sampling approach to roughly mimicking the style text image's background; 2) a pixel-wise style modulation technique to transfer varying color patterns of the style imag…

Photo-realistic style transfer aims at migrating the artistic style from an exemplar style image to a content image, producing a result image without spatial distortions or unrealistic artifacts. Impressive results have been achieved by recent deep models. However, deep neural network based methods are too expensive to run in real-time. Meanwhile, bilateral grid based methods are much faster but still contain artifacts like overexposure. In this work, we propose the \textbf{Adaptive ColorMLP (AdaCM)}, an effective and efficient framework for universal photo-realistic style transfer. First, we …
In this paper we present a semi-automatic 2D-3D local registration pipeline capable of coloring 3D models obtained from 3D scanners by using uncalibrated images. The proposed pipeline exploits the Structure from Motion (SfM) technique in order to reconstruct a sparse representation of the 3D object and obtain the camera parameters from image feature matches. We then coarsely register the reconstructed 3D model to the scanned one through the Scale Iterative Closest Point (SICP) algorithm. SICP provides the global scale, rotation and translation parameters, using minimal manual user intervention…
We present a single-image 3D face synthesis technique that can handle challenging facial expressions while recovering fine geometric details. Our technique employs expression analysis for proxy face geometry generation and combines supervised and unsupervised learning for facial detail synthesis. On proxy generation, we conduct emotion prediction to determine a new expression-informed proxy. On detail synthesis, we present a Deep Facial Detail Net (DFDN) based on Conditional Generative Adversarial Net (CGAN) that employs both geometry and appearance loss functions. For geometry, we capture 366…
Sign languages are visual languages, with vocabularies as rich as their spoken language counterparts. However, current deep-learning based Sign Language Production (SLP) models produce under-articulated skeleton pose sequences from constrained vocabularies and this limits applicability. To be understandable and accepted by the deaf, an automatic SLP system must be able to generate co-articulated photo-realistic signing sequences for large domains of discourse. In this work, we tackle large-scale SLP by learning to co-articulate between dictionary signs, a method capable of producing smooth sig…
Recent progress in deep learning-based models has improved photo-realistic (or perceptual) single-image super-resolution significantly. However, despite their powerful performance, many methods are difficult to apply to real-world applications because of the heavy computational requirements. To facilitate the use of a deep model under such demands, we focus on keeping the network efficient while maintaining its performance. In detail, we design an architecture that implements a cascading mechanism on a residual network to boost the performance with limited resources via multi-level feature fus…
The garment transfer problem comprises two tasks: learning to separate a person's body (pose, shape, color) from their clothing (garment type, shape, style) and then generating new images of the wearer dressed in arbitrary garments. We present GarmentGAN, a new algorithm that performs image-based garment transfer through generative adversarial methods. The GarmentGAN framework allows users to virtually try-on items before purchase and generalizes to various apparel types. GarmentGAN requires as input only two images, namely, a picture of the target fashion item and an image containing the cust…
We examined the feasibility of generative adversarial networks (GANs) to generate photo-realistic images from LiDAR point clouds. For this purpose, we created a dataset of point cloud image pairs and trained the GAN to predict photorealistic images from LiDAR point clouds containing reflectance and distance information. Our models learned how to predict realistically looking images from just point cloud data, even images with black cars. Black cars are difficult to detect directly from point clouds because of their low level of reflectivity. This approach might be used in the future to perform…

Understanding human actions is a crucial problem for service robots. However, the general trend in Action Recognition is developing and testing these systems on structured datasets. That's why this work presents a practical Skeleton-based Action Recognition framework which can be used in realistic scenarios. Our results show that although non-augmented and non-normalized data may yield comparable results on the test split of the dataset, it is far from being useful on another dataset which is a manually collected data.
To be truly understandable and accepted by Deaf communities, an automatic Sign Language Production (SLP) system must generate a photo-realistic signer. Prior approaches based on graphical avatars have proven unpopular, whereas recent neural SLP works that produce skeleton pose sequences have been shown to be not understandable to Deaf viewers. In this paper, we propose SignGAN, the first SLP model to produce photo-realistic continuous sign language videos directly from spoken language. We employ a transformer architecture with a Mixture Density Network (MDN) formulation to handle the translati…

Synthetic data is a scalable alternative to manual supervision, but it requires overcoming the sim-to-real domain gap. This discrepancy between virtual and real worlds is addressed by two seemingly opposed approaches: improving the realism of simulation or foregoing realism entirely via domain randomization. In this paper, we show that the recent progress in neural rendering enables a new unified approach we call Photo-realistic Neural Domain Randomization (PNDR). We propose to learn a composition of neural networks that acts as a physics-based ray tracer generating high-quality renderings fro…
Super-resolution is an ill-posed problem, where a ground-truth high-resolution image represents only one possibility in the space of plausible solutions. Yet, the dominant paradigm is to employ pixel-wise losses, such as L_1, which drive the prediction towards a blurry average. This leads to fundamentally conflicting objectives when combined with adversarial losses, which degrades the final quality. We address this issue by revisiting the L_1 loss and show that it corresponds to a one-layer conditional flow. Inspired by this relation, we explore general flows as a fidelity-based alternative to…

Structured layouts are preferable in many 2D visual contents (\eg, GUIs, webpages) since the structural information allows convenient layout editing. Computational frameworks can help create structured layouts but require heavy labor input. Existing data-driven approaches are effective in automatically generating fixed layouts but fail to produce layout structures. We present StructLayoutFormer, a novel Transformer-based approach for conditional structured layout generation. We use a structure serialization scheme to represent structured layouts as sequences. To better control the structures o…

Recent advances in deep learning have significantly improved performance of video prediction. However, state-of-the-art methods still suffer from blurriness and distortions in their future predictions, especially when there are large motions between frames. To address these issues, we propose a deep residual network with the hierarchical architecture where each layer makes a prediction of future state at different spatial resolution, and these predictions of different layers are merged via top-down connections to generate future frames. We trained our model with adversarial and perceptual loss…

Synthesizing high-quality images from text descriptions is a challenging problem in computer vision and has many practical applications. Samples generated by existing text-to-image approaches can roughly reflect the meaning of the given descriptions, but they fail to contain necessary details and vivid object parts. In this paper, we propose Stacked Generative Adversarial Networks (StackGAN) to generate 256x256 photo-realistic images conditioned on text descriptions. We decompose the hard problem into more manageable sub-problems through a sketch-refinement process. The Stage-I GAN sketches th…

In this paper we investigate the feasibility of using synthetic data to augment face datasets. In particular, we propose a novel generative adversarial network (GAN) that can disentangle identity-related attributes from non-identity-related attributes. This is done by training an embedding network that maps discrete identity labels to an identity latent space that follows a simple prior distribution, and training a GAN conditioned on samples from that distribution. Our proposed GAN allows us to augment face datasets by generating both synthetic images of subjects in the training set and synthe…

Image visual try-on aims at transferring a target clothing image onto a reference person, and has become a hot topic in recent years. Prior arts usually focus on preserving the character of a clothing image (e.g. texture, logo, embroidery) when warping it to arbitrary human pose. However, it remains a big challenge to generate photo-realistic try-on images when large occlusions and human poses are presented in the reference person. To address this issue, we propose a novel visual try-on network, namely Adaptive Content Generating and Preserving Network (ACGPN). In particular, ACGPN first predi…
