We consider the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) bounds on light dark matter whose cross section off nucleons is sufficiently large to enable acceleration by scattering off of cosmic rays in the local galaxy. Such accelerated DM could then deposit energy in terrestrial detectors. Since this signal involves DM of mass ~ keV - 100 MeV and requires large cross sections > 10^-31 cm^2 in a relativistic kinematic regime, we find that the DM population in this scenario is generically equilibrated with Standard Model particles in the early universe. For sufficiently low DM masses < 10 MeV, corresponding to the bulk of the favored region of many cosmic-ray upscattering studies, this equilibrated DM population adds an additional component to the relativistic energy density around T ~ few MeV and thereby spoils the successful predictions of BBN. In the remaining ~ 10-100 MeV mass range, the large couplings required in this scenario are either currently excluded or within reach of current or future accelerator-based searches.
We investigate gravitino dark matter scenarios in which the primordial ^6Li production is catalyzed by bound-state formation of long-lived negatively charged particles X^- with ^4He. In the constrained minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) with the stau^- as the X^-, the observationally inferred bound on the primordial ^6Li abundance allows us to derive a rigid lower limit on the gaugino mass parameter for a standard cosmological history. This limit can have severe implications for supersymmetry searches at the Large Hadron Collider and for the reheating temperature after inflation.
We re-examine the evolution of neutrino asymmetries in several four neutrino models. The first case involves the direct creation of $L_{ν_e}$ by $ν_e \leftrightarrow ν_s$ oscillations. In the second case, we consider the mass hierarchy $m_{ν_τ} \gg m_{ν_μ}, m_{ν_e}, m_{ν_s}$ where $ν_τ\leftrightarrow ν_s$ oscillations generate a large $L_{ν_τ}$ and some of this asymmetry is converted into $L_{ν_e}$ by $ν_τ \leftrightarrow ν_{e}$ oscillations. We estimate the implications for BBN for a range of cosmologically interesting $δm^2$ values. The present paper improves on previous published work by ta…
By numerically solving the quantum kinetic equations we compute the range of parameters where the $ν_μ\to ν_s$ oscillation solution to the atmospheric neutrino anomaly is consistent with a stringent big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) bound of $N_{eff}^{BBN} \stackrel{<}{\sim} 3.6$. We show that this requires tau neutrino masses in the range $m_{ν_τ} \stackrel {>}{\sim} 4 eV$ (for $|δm^2_{atm}| = 10^{-2.5} eV^2$). We discuss the implications of this scenario for hot+cold dark matter, BBN, and the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background.
Mirror dark matter interacting with ordinary matter via photon-mirror photon kinetic mixing can explain the DAMA, CoGeNT and CRESSTII direct detection experiments. This explanation requires kinetic mixing of strength $ε\sim 10^{-9}$. Such kinetic mixing will have important implications for early Universe cosmology. We calculate the additional relativistic energy density at recombination, $δN_{eff} [CMB]$. We also calculate the effects for big bang nucleosynthesis, $δN_{eff} [BBN]$. Current hints that both $δN_{eff} [CMB]$ and $δN_{eff} [BBN]$ are non-zero and positive can be accommodated withi…
We study constraints from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis on inert particles in a dark sector which contribute to the Hubble rate and therefore change the predictions of the primordial nuclear abundances. We pay special attention to the case of MeV-scale particles decaying into dark radiation, which are neither fully relativistic nor non-relativistic during all temperatures relevant to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. As an application we discuss the implications of our general results for models of self-interacting dark matter with light mediators.
We investigate the implications for neutrino mixing implied by the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments and by the standard Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis constraint on the number of light neutrinos.
Very recently, the LUNA collaboration has reported a new measurement of the $d+p\to {}^{3}\text{He}+γ$ reaction rate, which plays an important role in the prediction of the primordial deuterium abundance at the time of BBN. This new measurement has triggered a new set of global BBN analyses within the context of the Standard Model. In this addendum to JCAP 01 (2020) 004 (arXiv:1910.01649), we consider the implications of these new results for our constraints on MeV-scale dark sectors. Importantly, we find that our bounds in the BBN-only and Planck-only analyses are insensitive to these updates…
We discuss the effects of the gravitino on the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), paying particular attention to the hadronic decay mode of the gravitino. We will see that the hadronic decay of the gravitino significantly affect the BBN and, for the case where the hadronic branching ratio is sizable, very stringent upper bound on the reheating temperature after inflation is obtained.
We examine in detail how BBN theory is constrained, and what predictions it can make, when using only the most model-independent observational constraints. We avoid the uncertainties and model-dependencies that necessarily arise when solar neighborhood D and \he3 abundances are used to infer primordial D and \he3 via chemical and stellar evolution models. Instead, we use \he4 and \li7, thoroughly examining the effects of possible systematic errors in each. Via a likelihood analysis, we find near perfect agreement between BBN theory and the most model-independent data. Given this agreement, we …
In this article, we study the implications of the coupling between Axion-Like-Particles (ALPs) and Leptons to cosmology, in particular, the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We show that the BBN, through the constraint on the effective number of relativistic neutrino species, provides the most stringent bound on the ALP-electron interaction strength for the mass of axion between 20 keV and 1 MeV. For other values of the mass, the BBN bound complements the stellar-evolution and laboratory bounds.
New light states thermally coupled to the Standard Model plasma alter the expansion history of the Universe and impact the synthesis of the primordial light elements. In this work, we carry out an exhaustive and precise analysis of the implications of MeV-scale BSM particles in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and for Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations. We find that, BBN observations set a lower bound on the thermal dark matter mass of $m_χ> 0.4\,\text{MeV}$ at $2σ$. This bound is independent of the spin and number of internal degrees of freedom of the particle, of the annihilation b…
The BBN predictions for the abundances of the light element isotopes is reviewed and compared with recent observational data. The single unknown parameter of standard BBN is the baryon-to-photon ratio, η, and can be determined by the concordance between theory and observation. Recent CMB anisotropy measurements also lead to a determination of ηand these results are contrasted with those from BBN. In addition, the CMB data indicate that the Universe is spatially flat. Thus it is clear that some form of non-baryonic dark matter or dark energy is necessary. Here I will also review the current exp…

The Exact Parity Model (EPM) is, in part, a theory of neutrino mass and mixing that can solve the atmospheric, solar and LSND anomalies. The central feature of the neutrino sector is three pairs of maximally mixed ordinary and mirror neutrinos. It has been shown that ordinary-mirror neutrino oscillations can generate large neutrino asymmetries in the epoch of the early universe immediately prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). The large neutrino asymmetries generically suppress the production of mirror neutrinos, and a sufficiently large $ν_e$ asymmetry can directly affect light element syn…
Effects of the unstable gravitino on the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) and its implications to particle cosmology are discussed. If the gravitino mass is smaller than \sim 20 TeV, lifetime of the gravitino becomes longer than \sim 1sec and its decay may spoil the success of the standard BBN. In order to avoid such a problem, upper bound on the reheating temperature after the inflation is obtained, which may be as low as \sim 10^{5-6} GeV. For a successful baryogenesis with such low reheating temeprature, a consistent scenario based on the large cutoff supergravity (LCSUGRA) hypothesis of supe…
Ordinary-sterile neutrino oscillations can generate a significant lepton number asymmetry in the early Universe. We study this phenomenon in detail. We show that the dynamics of ordinary-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early Universe can be approximately described by a single integro-differential equation which we derive from both the density matrix and Hamiltonian formalisms. This equation reduces to a relatively simple ordinary first order differential equation if the system is sufficiently smooth (static limit). We study the conditions for which the static limit is an acceptable approx…
Gravitational waves (GW) produced in the early Universe contribute to the number of relativistic degrees of freedom, $N_{\rm eff}$, during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). By using the constraints on $N_{\rm eff}$, we present a new bound on how much the Universe could have expanded between horizon exit of the largest observable scales today and the end of inflation. We discuss the implications on inflationary models and show how the new constraints affect model selection. We also discuss the sensitivities of the current and planned GW observatories such as LIGO and LISA, and show that the const…
In recent years it has been realised that pre-BBN decays of moduli can be a significant source of dark matter production, giving a `non-thermal WIMP miracle' and substantially reduced fine-tuning in cosmological axion physics. We study moduli masses and sharpen the claim that moduli dominated the pre-BBN Universe. We conjecture that in any string theory with stabilized moduli there will be at least one modulus field whose mass is of order (or less than) the gravitino mass. Cosmology then generically requires the gravitino mass not be less than about 30 TeV and the cosmological history of the U…
Constraints on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) and on cosmological parameters from conflicting deuterium observations in different high red-shift QSO systems are discussed. The high deuterium observations by Carswell et al., Songaila et al., and Rugers & Hogan is consistent with 4He and 7Li observations and Standard BBN (N_nu =3) and allows N_nu \leq 3.6 at 95% C.L., but is inconsistent with local observations of D and 3He in the context of conventional theories of stellar and Galactic evolution. In contrast, the low deuterium observations by Tytler, Fan & Burles and Burles & Tytler are consist…

Provided that matter-antimatter domains are present at the onset of big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), the number of allowed additional relativistic species increases, compared to the standard scenario when matter-antimatter domains are absent. The extra relativistic species may take the form of massless fermions or even massless bosons, like relic gravitons. The number of additional degrees of freedom compatible with BBN depends, in this framework, upon the typical scale of the domains and the antimatter fraction. Since the presence of matter-antimatter domains allows a reduction of the neutron …
We derive a general master equation relating the gravitational-wave observables r and Omega_gw(f). Here r is the tensor-to-scalar ratio, constrained by cosmic-microwave-background (CMB) experiments; and Omega_gw(f) is the energy spectrum of primordial gravitational-waves, constrained e.g. by pulsar-timing measurements, laser-interferometer experiments, and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). Differentiating the master equation yields a new expression for the tilt d(ln Omega_gw(f))/d(ln f). The relationship between r and Omega_gw(f) depends sensitively on the uncertain physics of the early universe…
If the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is Higgsino-like, the thermal relic density is lower than the observed dark matter content for a LSP mass in the sub-TeV region. We outline constraints arising from the Fermi Gamma-Ray Telescope data and LSP production from gravitino decay that must be satisfied by a successful non-thermal Higgsino scenario. We show that in a generic class of models where anomaly and modulus mediated contributions to supersymmetry breaking are of comparable size, Higgsino arises as the only viable sub-TeV dark matter candidate if gravitinos are heavy enough to deca…
In the framework of the CMSSM we study the gravitino as the lightest supersymmetric particle and the dominant component of cold dark matter in the Universe. We include both a thermal contribution to its relic abundance from scatterings in the plasma and a non--thermal one from neutralino or stau decays after freeze--out. In general both contributions can be important, although in different regions of the parameter space. We further include constraints from BBN on electromagnetic and hadronic showers, from the CMB blackbody spectrum and from collider and non--collider SUSY searches. The region …
In Split-SUSY with BRpV we show that the Gravitino DM solution is consistent with experimental evidence on its relic density and life time. We arrive at this conclusion by performing a complete numerical and algebraic study of the parameter space, including constraints from the recently determined Higgs mass, updated neutrino physics, and BBN constraints on NLSP decays. The Higgs mass requires a relatively low Split-SUSY mass scale, which is naturally smaller than usual values for reheating temperature, allowing the use of the standard expression for the relic density. We include restrictions …
We examine the evolution of cosmological perturbations in a non-thermal post-inflationary history with a late-time matter domination period prior to BBN. Such a cosmology could arise naturally in the well-motivated moduli scenario in the context of supersymmetry (SUSY) -- in particular in models of Split-SUSY. Sub-horizon dark matter perturbations grow linearly during the matter dominated phase before reheating and can lead to an enhancement in the growth of substructure on small scales, even in the presence of dark matter annihilations. This suggests that a new scale (the horizon size at rehe…
Mirror atoms are expected to be a significant component of the galactic dark matter halo if mirror matter is identified with the non-baryonic dark matter in the Universe. Mirror matter can interact with ordinary matter via gravity and via the photon-mirror photon kinetic mixing interaction -- causing mirror charged particles to couple to ordinary photons with effective electric charge $εe$. This means that the nuclei of mirror atoms can elastically scatter off the nuclei of ordinary atoms, leading to nuclear recoils, which can be detected in existing dark matter experiments. We show that the d…
The observational evidence for the recent acceleration of the universe shows that canonical theories of cosmology and particle physics are incomplete and that new physics is out there, waiting to be discovered. A compelling task for astrophysical facilities is to search for, identify and ultimately characterize this new physics. I present very recent developments in tests of the stability of nature's fundamental constants, as well as their impact on physics paradigms beyond the standard model. Specifically I discuss new observational constraints at low redshifts and at the BBN epoch, and highl…
We present a model with dark matter in an anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking hidden sector with a U(1)xU(1) gauge symmetry. The symmetries of the model stabilize the dark matter and forbid the introduction of new mass parameters. As a result, the thermal relic density is completely determined by the gravitino mass and dimensionless couplings. Assuming non-hierarchical couplings, the thermal relic density is ~ 0.1, independent of the dark matter's mass and interaction strength, realizing the WIMPless miracle. The model has several striking features. For particle physics, stability of the d…
The existence of a light mediator is beneficial to some phenomena in astroparticle physics, such as the core-cusp problem and diversity problem. It can decouple from Standard Model to avoid direct detection constraints, generally realized by retard decay of the mediator. Their out-of-equilibrium decay process changes the dark matter (DM) freeze-out via temperature discrepancy. This type of hidden sector (HS) typically requires a precision calculation of the freeze-out process considering HS temperature evolution and the thermal average of the cross-section. If the mediator is light sufficientl…
I present a review of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, concentrating on the statistical analysis of theoretical uncertainties, and on systematic errors in observed abundances. Both have important implications for constraints on the amount of baryonic dark matter and the number of light neutrino species in nature. Without allowing for systematic uncertainties in abundances, we find that homogenous BBN would lead to the constraint $Ω_B \le .07$ and $N_ν \le 3.07$. Even allowing for maximal systematic uncertainties in $^4$He, and $^7$Li, we find $Ω_B \le .163$. For intermediate ranges we provide new ana…
Indirect detection constraints on gamma rays (both continuum and lines) have set strong constraints on wino dark matter. By combining results from Fermi-LAT and HESS, we show that: light nonthermal wino dark matter is strongly excluded; thermal wino dark matter is allowed only if the Milky Way dark matter distribution has a significant (>~0.4 kpc) core; and for plausible NFW and Einasto distributions the entire range of wino masses from 100 GeV up to 3 TeV can be excluded. The case of light, nonthermal wino dark matter is particularly interesting in scenarios with decaying moduli that reheat t…
We study scenarios where there exists an exotic massive particle charged under QCD in the early Universe. We calculate the formation and dissociation rates of bound states formed by pairs of these particles, and apply the results in dark matter (DM) coannihilation scenarios, including also the Sommerfeld effect. We find that on top of the Sommerfeld enhancement, bound-state effects can further significantly increase the largest possible DM masses which can give the observed DM relic abundance, by $\sim 30 - 100\%$ with respect to values obtained by considering the Sommerfeld effect only, for t…

We describe the implications on the structure formation, the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the large scale structure (LSS) for a Universe in which a significant part of dark matter is made of mirror baryons. Being the microphysics of the mirror baryons identical to the one of the usual baryons, we need only two extra thermodynamical parameters to describe our model: the temperature of the mirror plasma (limited by the BBN) and the amount of mirror baryonic matter. We extend the Jeans theory in order to study the structure formation mechanism in linear regime. Using a numerical code, we…
This is the first paper of a series devoted to the study of the cosmological implications of the parallel mirror world with the same microphysics as the ordinary one, but having smaller temperature, with a limit set by the BBN constraints. The difference in temperature of the ordinary and mirror sectors generates shifts in the key epochs for structure formation, which proceeds in the mirror sector under different conditions. We consider adiabatic scalar primordial perturbations as an input and analyze the trends of all the relevant scales for structure formation (Jeans length and mass, Silk sc…
Recent developments in string theory have led to "realistic" string compactifications which lead to moduli stabilization while generating a hierarchy between the Electroweak and Planck scales at the same time. However, this seems to suggest a rethink of our standard notions of cosmological evolution after the end of inflation and before the beginning of BBN. We argue that within classes of realistic string compactifications, there generically exists a light modulus with a mass comparable to that of the gravitino which generates a large late-time entropy when it decays. Therefore, all known mec…
