Context. This is the second work dedicated to the observed parallelism between galaxy clusters and early-type galaxies. The focus is on the distribution of these systems in the scaling relations (SRs) observed when effective radii, effective surface brightness, total luminosities and velocity dispersions are mutually correlated. Aims. Using the data of the Illustris simulation we try to speculate on the origin of the observed SRs. Methods. We compare the observational SRs extracted from the database of the WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (WINGS) with the relevant parameters coming from the Illustris simulations. Then we use the simulated data at different redshift to infer the evolution of the SRs. Results. The comparison demonstrate that galaxy clusters (GCs) at z~0 follow the same log(L)-log(sigma) relation of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and that both in the log(Ie)-log(Re) and log(Re)-log(M*) planes the distribution of GCs is along the sequence defined by the brightest and massive early-type galaxies (BCGs). The Illustris simulation reproduces the tails of the massive galaxies visible both in the log(Ie)-log(Re) and log(Re)-log(M*) planes, but fail to give the correct estimate of the effective radii of the dwarf galaxies that appear too large and those of GCs that are too small. The evolution of the SRs up to z=4 permits to reveal the complex evolutionary paths of galaxies in the SRs and indicate that the line marking the Zone of Exclusion (ZoE), visible both in the log(Ie)-log(Re) and log(Re)-log(M*) planes, is the trend followed by virialized and passively evolving systems. Conclusions. We speculate that the observed SRs originate from the intersection of the virial theorem and a relation L=L_0 x sigma^beta where the luminosities depend on the star formation history.
We present the results of deep imaging obtained at the CFHT with MegaCam in the Anticenter direction at two different heights above the Galactic disk. We detect the presence of the Monoceros ring in both fields as a conspicuous and narrow Main Sequence feature which dominates star counts over a large portion of the color-magnitude diagram down to g'~24. The comparison of the morphology and density of this feature with a large variety of Galactic models excludes the possibility that it can be due to a flare of the Galactic disk, supporting an extra-Galactic origin for this ring-like structure.
We acquired spectra of 141 HII regions in ten late-type low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs). The analysis of the chemical abundances obtained from the nebular emission lines shows that metallicity gradients are a common feature of LSBGs, contrary to previous claims concerning the absence of such gradients in this class of galaxies. The average slope, when expressed in units of the isophotal radius, is found to be significantly shallower in comparison to galaxies of high surface brightness. This result can be attributed to the reduced surface brightness range measured across their discs, wh…
We discuss the origin of the LMC stellar bar by comparing the star formation histories (SFH) obtained from deep color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) in the bar and in a number of fields in different directions within the inner disk. The CMDs, reaching the oldest main sequence turnoffs in these very crowded fields, have been obtained with VIMOS on the VLT in service mode, under very good seeing conditions. We show that the SFHs of all fields share the same patterns, with consistent variations of the star formation rate as a function of time in all of them. We therefore conclude that no specific even…
We constrain the origin of Fermi Bubbles using 2D hydrodynamical simulations of both star formation driven and black hole accretion driven wind models. We compare our results with recent observations of OVIII to OVII line ratio within and near Fermi Bubbles. Our results suggest that independent of the driving mechanisms, a low luminosity ($\mathcal{L} \sim 0.7-1\times 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$) energy injection best reproduces the observed line ratio for which the shock temperature is $\approx 3\times 10^6$ K. Assuming the Galactic halo temperature to be $2\times 10^6$K, we estimate the shock velo…
The radio emission in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) has been a long mystery and its physical origin remains unclear. In a previous work we find UV/optical more variable quasars have stronger X-ray emission, indicating a link between disc turbulence and X-ray corona heating. In this work, for the first time, we investigate the relation between UV/optical variability and the radio emission in RQQs selected from SDSS stripe 82 and FIRST radio survey. We median stack the FIRST images and detect clear signals from RQQs in the co-added images of individually radio non-detected sources. Controlling the …
Isolated HI clouds with no optical counterparts are often taken as evidence for galaxy-galaxy interactions, though an alternative hypothesis is that these are primordial 'dark galaxies' which have not formed stars. Similarly, certain kinematic features in HI streams are also controversial, sometimes taken as evidence of dark galaxies but also perhaps explicable as the result of harassment. We numerically model the passage of a galaxy through the gravitational field of cluster. The galaxy consists of SPH particles for the gas and n-bodies for the stars and dark matter, while the cluster include…
We search for correlations between the spin in pairs of spiral galaxies, to study if the angular momentum gain for each galaxy was the result of tidal torques imprint by the same tidal field. To perform our study we made use of a sample of galaxy pairs identified using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find a weak, but statistically significant correlation between the spin magnitude of neighbouring galaxies, but no clear alignment between their orientation. We show that events such as interactions with close neighbours play an important role in the value of the spin for the final configuration,…
A small set of chemically old stars that appear young by their independently derived masses has been detected. These are so-called $α$-rich young stars. For a sample of 51 red-giant stars, for which spectra are available from SDSS/APOGEE and masses are available from asteroseismic measures based on \textit{Kepler} lightcurves, we derive the C, N and O abundances through an independent analysis. These stars span a wide range of N/C surface number density ratios. We interpret the high-mass stars with low N/C as being products of mergers or mass transfer during or after first dredge up, because t…
We propose that the rotational kinematics of the globular cluster system (GCS) in M31 can result from a past major merger event that could have formed its bulge component. We numerically investigate kinematical properties of globular clusters (GCs) in remnants of galaxy mergers between two disks with GCs in both their disk and halo components. We find that the GCS formed during major merging can show strongly rotational kinematics with the maximum rotational velocities of 140 - 170 km/s for a certain range of orbital parameters of merging. We also find that a rotating stellar bar, which can be…
Blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) form stars at, for their sizes, extraordinarily high rates. In this paper, we study what triggers this starburst and what is the fate of the galaxy once its gas fuel is exhausted. We select four BCDs with smooth outer regions, indicating them as possible progenitors of dwarf elliptical galaxies. We have obtained photometric and spectroscopic data with the FORS and ISAAC instruments on the VLT. We analyse their infra-red spectra using a full spectrum fitting technique which yields the kinematics of their stars and ionized gas together with their stellar popula…
Scaling relations for globular clusters (GC) differ from scaling relations for pressure supported (elliptical) galaxies. We show that two-body relaxation is the dominant mechanism in shaping the bivariate dependence of density on mass and Galactocentric distance for Milky Way GCs with masses <10^6 Msun, and it is possible, but not required, that GCs formed with similar scaling relations as ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. We use a fast cluster evolution model to fit a parameterised model for the initial properties of Milky Way GCs to the observed present-day properties. The best-fit cluster initi…
In order to elucidate the origin of spin in both dark matter and baryons in galaxies, we have performed hydrodynamical simulations from cosmological initial conditions. We study atomic cooling haloes in the redshift range $100 > z > 9$ with masses of order $10^9{\rm M_{\odot}}$ at redshift $z=10$. We assume that the gas has primordial composition and that ${\rm H_2}$-cooling and prior star-formation in the haloes have been suppressed. We present a comprehensive analysis of the gas and dark matter properties of four halos with very low ($λ\approx 0.01$), low ($λ\approx 0.04$), high ($λ\approx 0…
The star formation history of galaxies is a complex process usually considered to be stochastic in nature, for which we can only give average descriptions such as the color-density relation. In this work we follow star-forming gas particles in a hydrodynamical N-body simulation back in time in order to study their initial spatial configuration. By keeping record of the time when a gas particle started forming stars we can produce gas-star isochrone surfaces delineating the surfaces of accreting gas that begin producing stars at different times. These accretion surfaces are closely packed insid…
Context. This is the third study of a series dedicated to the observed parallelism of properties between Galaxy Clusters and Groups(GCGs) and early-type galaxies (ETGs). Aims. Here we investigate the physical origin of the Mass-Radius Relation (MRR). Methods. Having collected literature data on masses and radii for objects going from Globular Clusters (GCs) to ETGs and GCGs, we set up the MR-plane and compare the observed distribution with the MRR predicted by theoretical models both for the monolithic and hierarchical scenarios. Results. We argue that the distributions of stellar systems in t…
We investigate a peculiar feature at the hottest, blue end of the horizontal branch of Galactic globular cluster omega Centauri, using the high-precision and nearly complete catalog that has been constructed from a survey taken with the ACS on board the HST, that covers the inner 10x10 arcminutes. It is a densely populated clump of stars with an almost vertical structure in the F435W-(F435W-F625W) plane, that we termed "blue clump". A comparison with theoretical models leads to the conclusion that this feature must necessarily harbor either hot flasher stars, or canonical He-rich stars --proge…
The stellar kinematics of the spheroids and discs of S0 galaxies contain clues to their formation histories. Unfortunately, it is difficult to disentangle the two components and to recover their stellar kinematics in the faint outer parts of the galaxies using conventional absorption line spectroscopy. This paper therefore presents the stellar kinematics of six S0 galaxies derived from observations of planetary nebulae (PNe), obtained using the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph. To separate the kinematics of the two components, we use a maximum-likelihood method that combines the discrete kinemati…
The CLusters in the Uv as EngineS (CLUES) survey is a Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) campaign aimed at acquiring the 1130 to 1770 Å, restframe spectroscopy of very young (<20 Myr) and massive (>10^4 solar masses) star clusters in galaxies that are part of the Hubble treasury program Legacy ExtraGalactic Uv Survey (LEGUS). In this first paper of a series, we describe the CLUES sample consisting of 20 young star clusters and report their physical properties as derived by both multi-wavelength photometry and far-UV (FUV) spectroscopy with Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Thanks to the synergy of …
Spatially resolved near-IR and X-ray imaging of the central region of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC 5135 is presented. The kinematical signatures of strong outflows are detected in the [FeII]1.64 μm emission line in a compact region at 0.9 kpc from the nucleus. The derived mechanical energy release is consistent with a supernova rate of 0.05-0.1 yr$^{-1}$. The apex of the outflowing gas spatially coincides with the strongest [FeII] emission peak and with the dominant component of the extranuclear hard X-ray emission. All these features provide evidence for a plausible direct physical link b…
A search for young substellar objects in the rho Oph cloud core region has been made using the deep-integration Combined Calibration Scan images of the 2MASS extended mission in J, H and Ks bands, and Spitzer IRAC images at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 microns. The field of view of the combined observations was 1 deg x 9.3 arcmin, and the 5 sigma limiting magnitude at J was 20.5. Comparison of the observed SEDs with the predictions of the COND and DUSTY models, for an assumed age of 1 Myr, supports the identification of many of the sources with brown dwarfs, and enables the estimation of effective te…
Embedded clusters are formed in molecular clouds where massive stars can produce HII regions. The detailed embedded-open cluster evolutionary connection as well as the origin of associations are yet to be unveiled. There appears to be a high infant mortality rate among embedded clusters and the few survivors evolve to open clusters. We study the colour-magnitude diagrams and structure of the star clusters related to the Sh2-132 HII region using the 2MASS database. Cluster fundamental and structural parameters are determined via MS and PMS isochrones and stellar radial density profiles. We repo…
HR 6819 is a bright ($V=5.36$), blue star recently proposed to be a triple containing a detached black hole (BH). We show that the system is a binary and does not contain a BH. Using spectral decomposition, we disentangle the observed composite spectra into two components: a rapidly rotating Be star and a slowly rotating B star with low surface gravity $(\log g \approx 2.75)$. Both stars show periodic radial velocity (RV) variability, but the RV semi-amplitude of the B star's orbit is $K_{\rm B}= (62.7 \pm 1)\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$, while that of the Be star is only $K_{\rm Be} = (4.5\pm 2)\,\rm km\…
The Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) LSQ14fmg exhibits exaggerated properties which may help to reveal the origin of the "super-Chandrasekhar" (or 03fg-like) group. The optical spectrum is typical of a 03fg-like SN Ia, but the light curves are unlike those of any SNe Ia observed. The light curves of LSQ14fmg rise extremely slowly. At -23 rest-frame days relative to B-band maximum, LSQ14fmg is already brighter than $M_V$=-19 mag before host extinction correction. The observed color curves show a flat evolution from the earliest observation to approximately one week after maximum. The near-infrared lig…
Early-type retired galaxies (RGs, i.e. galaxies which no longer form stars) can be divided into two classes: those with no emission lines, here dubbed lineless RGs, and those with emission lines, dubbed liny RGs. Both types of galaxies contain hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) which emit ionizing photons. The difference must thus lie in the presence or absence of a reservoir of ionizable gas. From a volume-limited sample of 38\,038 elliptical galaxies, we explore differences in physical properties between liny and lineless using data from the SDSS, WISE and GALEX catalogues. To avoid biases …
We use a compilation of disc galaxy rotation curves to assess the role of the luminous component ("baryons") in the rotation curve diversity problem. As in earlier work, we find that rotation curve shape correlates with baryonic surface density: high surface density galaxies have rapidly-rising rotation curves consistent with cuspy cold dark matter halos; slowly-rising rotation curves (characteristic of galaxies with inner mass deficits or "cores") occur only in low surface density galaxies. The correlation, however, seems too weak to be the main driver of the diversity. In addition, dwarf gal…
HST/ACS observations along the major axis of M33 show that the mean age of its stars decreases with increasing distance from the galaxy center. Such a behavior is consistent with an inside-out growth of the disc. However, in the outermost observed field, at r$\simeq$11.6 kpc, a reversal of this gradient is detected, with old stars found in high percentages beyond this radius. In this work we investigate the origin of such a reversal in stellar age gradient, by using a simulated M33 analogue from the Constrained Local UniversE Simulations (CLUES). The simulated M33 is similar to the observed on…
Liller 1 and Terzan 5 are two massive systems in the Milky-Way bulge hosting populations characterized by significantly different ages ($Δt>7-8$ Gyr) and metallicities ($Δ$[Fe/H]$\sim1$ dex). Their origin is still strongly debated in the literature and all formation scenarios proposed so far require some level of fine-tuning. The detailed star formation histories (SFHs) of these systems may represent an important piece of information to assess their origin. Here we present the first attempt to perform such an analysis for Liller 1. The first key result we find is that Liller 1 has been forming…
Understanding the escape of ionizing (Lyman continuum) photons from galaxies is vital for determining how galaxies contributed to reionization in the early universe. While directly detecting Lyman continuum from high redshift galaxies is impossible due to the intergalactic medium, low redshift galaxies in principle offer this possibility, but requirie observations from space. The first local galaxy for which Lyman continuum escape was found is Haro11 , a luminous blue compact galaxy at z=0.02, where observations with the FUSE satellite revealed an escape fraction of 3.3 %. However the FUSE ape…
We explore the possibility of detecting the first galaxies with the next generation Origins Space Telescope (OST) by applying an analytical model of primordial dust emission. By analysing source densities as a function of redshift (z), and considering deep-field exposures with the Origins Survey Spectrometer, we estimate that the redshift horizon for detecting one individual source would be above z~7 for systems with dust-to-metal ratios higher than those expected for typical primeval galaxies. On the other hand, if confusion limits could be overcome, the Far-infrared Imager and Polarimeter wo…
Local Group satellite galaxies show a wide diversity of star formation histories (SFHs) whose origin is yet to be fully understood. Using hydrodynamical simulations from the Constrained Local UniversE project, we study the SFHs of satellites of Milky Way-like galaxies in a cosmological context: while in the majority of the cases the accretion onto their host galaxy causes the satellites to lose their gas, with a subsequent suppression in SF, in about 25$\%$ of our sample we observe a clear enhancement of SF after infall. Peaks in SF clearly correlate with the satellite pericentric passage arou…
A discrepancy has emerged between the cosmic lithium abundance inferred by the WMAP satellite measurement coupled with the prediction of the standard big-bang nucleosynthesis theory, and the constant Li abundance measured in metal-poor halo dwarf stars (the so-called Spite plateau). Several models are being proposed to explain this discrepancy, involving either new physics, in situ depletion, or the efficient depletion of Li in the pristine Galaxy by a generation of massive first stars. The realm of possibilities may be narrowed considerably by observing stellar populations in different galaxi…
