Fingerprint Liveness detection, or presentation attacks detection (PAD), that is, the ability of detecting if a fingerprint submitted to an electronic capture device is authentic or made up of some artificial materials, boosted the attention of the scientific community and recently machine learning approaches based on deep networks opened novel scenarios. A significant step ahead was due thanks to the public availability of large sets of data; in particular, the ones released during the International Fingerprint Liveness Detection Competition (LivDet). Among others, the fifth edition carried on in 2017, challenged the participants in two more challenges which were not detailed in the official report. In this paper, we want to extend that report by focusing on them: the first one was aimed at exploring the case in which the PAD is integrated into a fingerprint verification systems, where templates of users are available too and the designer is not constrained to refer only to a generic users population for the PAD settings. The second one faces with the exploitation ability of attackers of the provided fakes, and how this ability impacts on the final performance. These two challenges together may set at which extent the fingerprint presentation attacks are an actual threat and how to exploit additional information to make the PAD more effective.
The vulnerability of automated fingerprint recognition systems to presentation attacks (PA), i.e., spoof or altered fingers, has been a growing concern, warranting the development of accurate and efficient presentation attack detection (PAD) methods. However, one major limitation of the existing PAD solutions is their poor generalization to new PA materials and fingerprint sensors, not used in training. In this study, we propose a robust PAD solution with improved cross-material and cross-sensor generalization. Specifically, we build on top of any CNN-based architecture trained for fingerprint…
Nowadays, fingerprint-based biometric recognition systems are becoming increasingly popular. However, in spite of their numerous advantages, biometric capture devices are usually exposed to the public and thus vulnerable to presentation attacks (PAs). Therefore, presentation attack detection (PAD) methods are of utmost importance in order to distinguish between bona fide and attack presentations. Due to the nearly unlimited possibilities to create new presentation attack instruments (PAIs), unknown attacks are a threat to existing PAD algorithms. This fact motivates research on generalisation …

We study the problem of fingerprint presentation attack detection (PAD) under unknown PA materials not seen during PAD training. A dataset of 5,743 bonafide and 4,912 PA images of 12 different materials is used to evaluate a state-of-the-art PAD, namely Fingerprint Spoof Buster. We utilize 3D t-SNE visualization and clustering of material characteristics to identify a representative set of PA materials that cover most of PA feature space. We observe that a set of six PA materials, namely Silicone, 2D Paper, Play Doh, Gelatin, Latex Body Paint and Monster Liquid Latex provide a good representat…
As a non-invasive optical imaging technique, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has proven promising for automatic fingerprint recognition system (AFRS) applications. Diverse approaches have been proposed for OCT-based fingerprint presentation attack detection (PAD). However, considering the complexity and variety of PA samples, it is extremely challenging to increase the generalization ability with the limited PA dataset. To solve the challenge, this paper presents a novel supervised learning-based PAD method, denoted as ISAPAD, which applies prior knowledge to guide network training and enha…
Touch-based fingerprint biometrics is one of the most popular biometric modalities with applications in several fields. Problems associated with touch-based techniques such as the presence of latent fingerprints and hygiene issues due to many people touching the same surface motivated the community to look for non-contact-based solutions. For the last few years, contactless fingerprint systems are on the rise and in demand because of the ability to turn any device with a camera into a fingerprint reader. Yet, before we can fully utilize the benefit of noncontact-based methods, the biometric co…

Optical coherent tomography (OCT) fingerprint technology provides rich depth information, including internal fingerprint (papillary junction) and sweat (eccrine) glands, in addition to imaging any fake layers (presentation attacks) placed over finger skin. Unlike 2D surface fingerprint scans, additional depth information provided by the cross-sectional OCT depth profile scans are purported to thwart fingerprint presentation attacks. We develop and evaluate a presentation attack detector (PAD) based on deep convolutional neural network (CNN). Input data to CNN are local patches extracted from t…

The technology of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to fingerprint imaging opens up a new research potential for fingerprint recognition owing to its ability to capture depth information of the skin layers. Developing robust and high security Automated Fingerprint Recognition Systems (AFRSs) are possible if the depth information can be fully utilized. However, in existing studies, Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) and subsurface fingerprint reconstruction based on depth information are treated as two independent branches, resulting in high computation and complexity of AFRS building. Thus, t…
The diffusion of fingerprint verification systems for security applications makes it urgent to investigate the embedding of software-based presentation attack detection algorithms (PAD) into such systems. Companies and institutions need to know whether such integration would make the system more "secure" and whether the technology available is ready, and, if so, at what operational working conditions. Despite significant improvements, especially by adopting deep learning approaches to fingerprint PAD, current research did not state much about their effectiveness when embedded in fingerprint ve…
Fingerprint-based biometric systems have experienced a large development in the last years. Despite their many advantages, they are still vulnerable to presentation attacks (PAs). Therefore, the task of determining whether a sample stems from a live subject (i.e., bona fide) or from an artificial replica is a mandatory issue which has received a lot of attention recently. Nowadays, when the materials for the fabrication of the Presentation Attack Instruments (PAIs) have been used to train the PA Detection (PAD) methods, the PAIs can be successfully identified. However, current PAD methods stil…

Due to the diversity of attack materials, fingerprint recognition systems (AFRSs) are vulnerable to malicious attacks. It is thus important to propose effective fingerprint presentation attack detection (PAD) methods for the safety and reliability of AFRSs. However, current PAD methods often exhibit poor robustness under new attack types settings. This paper thus proposes a novel channel-wise feature denoising fingerprint PAD (CFD-PAD) method by handling the redundant noise information ignored in previous studies. The proposed method learns important features of fingerprint images by weighing …

Fingerprint recognition systems are widely deployed in various real-life applications as they have achieved high accuracy. The widely used applications include border control, automated teller machine (ATM), and attendance monitoring systems. However, these critical systems are prone to spoofing attacks (a.k.a presentation attacks (PA)). PA for fingerprint can be performed by presenting gummy fingers made from different materials such as silicone, gelatine, play-doh, ecoflex, 2D printed paper, 3D printed material, or latex. Biometrics Researchers have developed Presentation Attack Detection (P…

This trend is propelled especially by the proliferation of mobile devices with fingerprint sensors such as smartphones and tablet computers, and fingerprint verification is increasingly applied for authenticating financial transactions. In this study we describe a novel attack vector against fingerprint verification systems which we coin skilled impostor attack. We show that existing protocols for performance evaluation of fingerprint verification systems are flawed and as a consequence of this, the system's real vulner…

In recent years, the popularity of fingerprint-based biometric authentication systems significantly increased. However, together with many advantages, biometric systems are still vulnerable to presentation attacks (PAs). In particular, this applies for unsupervised applications, where new attacks unknown to the system operator may occur. Therefore, presentation attack detection (PAD) methods are used to determine whether samples stem from a bona fide subject or from a presentation attack instrument (PAI). In this context, most works are dedicated to solve PAD as a two-class classification prob…

With the development of presentation attacks, Automated Fingerprint Recognition Systems(AFRSs) are vulnerable to presentation attack. Thus, numerous methods of presentation attack detection(PAD) have been proposed to ensure the normal utilization of AFRS. However, the demand of large-scale presentation attack images and the low-level generalization ability always astrict existing PAD methods' actual performances. Therefore, we propose a novel Zero-Shot Presentation Attack Detection Model to guarantee the generalization of the PAD model. The proposed ZSPAD-Model based on generative model does n…

The increased need for unattended authentication in multiple scenarios has motivated a wide deployment of biometric systems in the last few years. This has in turn led to the disclosure of security concerns specifically related to biometric systems. Among them, Presentation Attacks (PAs, i.e., attempts to log into the system with a fake biometric characteristic or presentation attack instrument) pose a severe threat to the security of the system: any person could eventually fabricate or order a gummy finger or face mask to impersonate someone else. The biometrics community has thus made a cons…

At present spoofing attacks via which biometric system is potentially vulnerable against a fake biometric characteristic, introduces a great challenge to recognition performance. Despite the availability of a broad range of presentation attack detection (PAD) or liveness detection algorithms, fingerprint sensors are vulnerable to spoofing via fake fingers. In such situations, finger dorsal images can be thought of as an alternative which can be captured without much user cooperation and are more appropriate for outdoor security applications. In this paper, we present a first feasibility study …
