Usage of double-layer targets consisting of heavy and light material with modulated interface between them provides a way for laser-driven generation of collimated ion beams. With extensive 2D3V PIC simulations we show that this configuration may result in a development of a relativistic instability with Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov like features. Initially small perturbations are amplified during the laser-target interaction leading to the formation of low-density plasma regions and high-density bunches between them, which are accelerated by the laser radiation pressure as whole compact structures. That results in collimated quasi-monoenergetic proton beam with high average energy. The properties of this proton beam such as its low emittance (one order of magnitude lower compared to that of conventional accelerators) and divergence are discussed. Results are compared with similar acceleration schemes such as double-layer target without corrugation and single-layer target.
Generation of collimated, quasi-monoenergetic electron beams (peak energy ~17-22MeV, divergence ~10mrad, energy spread ~20%) by interaction of Ti:sapphire laser pulse of 200fs duration, focussed to an intensity of ~ 2.1x10^18 W/cm^2,with an under-dense (density~3.6x10^19 to ~1.1x10^20 cm-3) He gas-jet plasma was observed. Two stages of self-focusing of the laser pulse in the plasma were observed. Two groups of accelerated electrons were also observed associated with these stages of the channeling and is attributed to the betatron resonance acceleration mechanism. This is supported by 2D PIC si…
An experimental investigation on laser plasma acceleration of electrons has been carried out using 3 TW, 45 fs duration titanium sapphire laser pulse interaction with nitrogen gas jet at intensity of 2x10^18 W/cm^2. We have observed stable generation of well collimated electron beam with divergence and pointing variation ~ 10 mrad from the nitrogen gas jet plasma at an optimum plasma density around 3x10^19 cm^-3. The energy spectrum of the electron beam was quasi-monoenergetic with average peak energy and charge around 25 MeV and 30 pC respectively. The results will be useful for better unders…
Using fully three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we show that readily available femtosecond laser systems can stably generate proton beams with hundred MeV energy and low spread at $\sim1\%$ level by parallel irradiation of a tens of micrometers long plasma plate. As the laser pulse sweeps along the plate, it drags out a huge charge ($\sim$100 nC) of collimated energetic electrons and accelerates them along the plate surface to superponderomotive energies. When this dense electron current arrives at the rear end of the plate, it induces a strong electrostatic field. Due to the exces…
We have investigated proton acceleration in the forward direction from a near-critical density hydrogen gas jet target irradiated by a high intensity (10^18 W/cm^2), short-pulse (5 ps) laser with wavelength of 1.054 micron. We observe the signature of shock acceleration driven by the laser pulse, leading to monoenergetic proton beams with small divergence in addition to the commonly used electron-sheath driven proton acceleration. The proton energies we obtained are modest (~MeV), but prospects for improvement are offered through tailoring the gas jet density profile. Also, we observe that thi…
Target shape effects on monoenergetic GeV proton acceleration
Compact acceleration of a tightly collimated relativistic electron beam with high charge from a laser-plasma interaction has many unique applications. However, currently the well-known schemes, including laser wakefield acceleration from gases and vacuum laser acceleration from solids, often produce electron beams either with low charge or with large divergence angles. In this work, we report the generation of highly collimated electron beams with a divergence angle of a few degrees, quasi-monoenergetic spectra peaked at the MeV level, and extremely high charge ($\sim$100 nC) via a powerful su…
A superintense laser pulse illuminating a thin solid-density foil can, in principle, accelerate the entire foil, therefore yielding dense, collimated, and quasi-monoenergetic ion beams. These unique features render radiation pressure acceleration in the light sail regime a promising acceleration mechanism suited for applications where dense and high-flux ion beams are required. However, the onset of several instabilities typically results into foil deformation and heating, which cause premature termination of the radiation pressure acceleration stage and strong broadening of the ion spectrum. …
A new scheme of proton acceleration from a laser-driven near-critical-density plasma is proposed. Plasma with a tailored density profile allows a two-stage acceleration of protons. The protons are pre-accelerated in the laser-driven wakefields, and are then further accelerated by the collisionless shock, launched from the rear side of the plasma. The shock has a small transverse size, and it generates a strong space-charge field, which defocuses protons in such a way, that only those protons with the highest energies and low energy spread remains collimated. Theoretical and numerical analysis …
Generation of highly collimated monoenergetic relativistic ion beams is one of the most challenging and promising areas in ultra-intense laser-matter interactions because of the numerous scientific and technological applications that require such beams. We address this challenge by introducing the concept of laser-ion lensing and acceleration (LILA). Using a simple analogy with a gradient-index lens, we demonstrate that simultaneous focusing and acceleration of ions is accomplished by illuminating a shaped solid-density target by an intense laser pulse at ~10^22 W/cm^2 intensity, and using rad…
