Is there an unknown long-range force between dark matter (DM) and ordinary matters? When such a fifth force exists and in the case that it is ignored, the equivalence principle (EP) is violated apparently. The violation of EP was severely constrained by, for examples, the Eöt-Wash laboratory experiments, the lunar laser ranging, the MICROSCOPE satellite, and the long-term observation of binary pulsars. We discuss a recent bound that comes from PSR J1713+0747. When it is combined with the other bounds, a compelling limit on the hypothetical fifth force is derived. For the neutral hydrogen, the strength of such a fifth force should not exceed $1\%$ of the gravity.
We show that the radial acceleration relation for rotationally-supported galaxies may be explained, in the absence of cold dark matter, by a non-minimally coupled scalar field, whose fifth forces are partially screened on galactic scales by the symmetron mechanism. In addition, we show that sufficient energy is stored in the symmetron field to explain the dynamic stability of galactic disks.
This article reports on the Fifth Meeting on CPT and Lorentz Symmetry, CPT'10, held at the end of June 2010 in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. The focus is on recent tests of Lorentz symmetry using atomic and optical physics.
We have reanalyzed data obtained by Potter in a 1923 experiment aimed at testing whether the accelerations of test masses in the Earth's gravitational field are independent of their compositions. Although Potter concludes that the accelerations of his samples compared to a brass standard were individually consistent with a null result, we show that the pattern formed from a combined plot of all of his data suggests the presence of a fifth force coupling to baryon number.

The recent analyses of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data show an extended GeV $γ$-ray excess on top of the expected diffuse background in the Galactic center region, which can be explained with annihilating dark matter or a population of millisecond pulsars (MSPs). We propose to observe the very high energy $γ$-rays for distinguishing the MSP scenario from the dark matter scenario. The GeV $γ$-ray MSPs should release most energy to the relativistic $e^{\pm}$ wind, which will diffuse in the Galaxy and radiate TeV $γ$-rays through inverse Compton scattering and bremsstrahlung processes. By cal…
The Fermi-LAT collaboration has recently released a new point source catalog, referred to as 4FGL. For the first time, we perform a template fit using information from this new catalog and find that the Galactic center excess is still present. On the other hand, we find that a wavelet-based search for point sources is highly sensitive to the use of the 4FGL catalog: no excess of bright regions on small angular scales is apparent when we mask out 4FGL point sources. We postulate that the 4FGL catalog contains the large majority of bright point sources that have previously been suggested to acco…
Infall of cold dark matter on a galaxy may result in caustic rings where the particle density is enhanced. They may be searched for as features in the galactic rotation curves. Previous studies suggested the evidence for these caustic rings with universal, that is common for different galaxies, parameters. Here we test this hypothesis with a large independent set of rotation curves by means of an improved statistical method. No evidence for universal caustic rings is found in the new analysis.
Active galactic nuclei and gamma ray bursts at cosmological distances are sources of high-energy electron and muon neutrinos and provide a unique test bench for neutrino instability. The typical lifetime-to-mass ratio one can reach there is $τ/m\sim 500 Mpc/cE_ν\sim 500$ s/eV. We study the rapid decay channel $ν_i\toν_j+ϕ$, where $ϕ$ is a massless or very light scalar (possibly a Goldstone boson), and point out that one can test the coupling strength of $g_{ij}ν_iν_j$ down to $g_{ij}\lsim 10^{-8} eV/m$ by measuring the relative fluxes of $ν_{e}$, $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$. This is orders of magnitude mo…
We examine the viability of Weyl conformal gravity as an alternative to the general theory of relativity. By using the extended rotation curve of the Milky Way and velocity dispersions of four globular clusters, we show that Weyl gravity predictions without resorting to dark matter comply with observations at the galactic scale. For the Milky Way, we demonstrate that the uncertainty in baryonic modelling results a bracket of possible rotational velocities which well encompasses the diversity in rotation curve construction. Such diversity generally arises from differences in measurements of vel…
Scalar fields coupled to gravity through the Ricci scalar have been considered both as dark matter candidates and as a possible modified gravity explanation for galactic dynamics. It has recently been demonstrated that the dynamics of baryonic matter in disk galaxies may be explained, in the absence of particle dark matter, by a symmetron scalar field that mediates a fifth force. The symmetron provides a concrete and archetypal field theory within which to explore how large a role modifications of gravity can play on galactic scales. In this article, we extend these previous works by asking wh…
Recent determinations of the white dwarf luminosity function (WDLF) from very large surveys have extended our knowledge of the WDLF to very high luminosities. It has been shown that the shape of the luminosity function of white dwarfs (WDLF) is a powerful tool to test the possible properties and existence of fundamental weakly interacting subelectronvolt particles. This, together with the availability of new full evolutionary white dwarf models that are reliable at high luminosities, have opened the possibility of testing particle emission in the core of very hot white dwarfs. We use the avail…
The Planck collaboration has recently published maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, in good agreement with a LCDM model, a fit especially valid for multipoles l > 40. We explore here the possibility that dark energy is dynamical and gravitational attraction between dark matter particles is effectively different from the standard one in General Relativity: this is the case of coupled dark energy models, where dark matter particles feel the presence of a fifth force, larger than gravity by a factor beta^2. We investigate constraints on the strength of the coupling beta in vi…
The recent advent of high precision antihydrogen spectroscopy opens the way to stringent experimental tests of the fundamental principles underlying particle physics and general relativity (GR), such as Lorentz and CPT invariance and the Einstein Equivalence Principle (EEP), on pure antimatter systems. In this paper, the nature and implications of these tests is investigated, with special reference to the ALPHA antihydrogen programme at CERN. This is underpinned by a theoretical review of the role of antiparticles, causality and fundamental symmetries in relativistic quantum field theory (QFT)…
Neutrinos are the least detectable Standard Model particle. By making use of this fact, we consider dark matter annihilations and decays in the galactic halo and show how present and future neutrino detectors could be used to set general limits on the dark matter annihilation cross section and on the dark matter lifetime.
MONDian dark matter (MDM) is a new form of dark matter quantum that naturally accounts for Milgrom's scaling, usually associated with modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND), and theoretically behaves like cold dark matter (CDM) at cluster and cosmic scales. In this paper, we provide the first observational test of MDM by fitting rotation curves to a sample of 30 local spiral galaxies (z approximately 0.003). For comparison, we also fit the galactic rotation curves using MOND, and CDM. We find that all three models fit the data well. The rotation curves predicted by MDM and MOND are virtually indis…
It was shown recently that, without jeopardizing the success of the $Λ$ cold dark matter model on cosmic scales, the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) can be derived as an emergent phenomenon when axionlike dark matter particles condense into superfluid on the galactic scales. We propose in this paper a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar field conformally coupled to the matter components. To maintain the success of MOND phenomenon of dark matter superfluid on the galactic scales, the fifth force introduced by the DBI scalar should be screened on the galactic scales. It turns out that the screenin…
We propose to test the dark matter (DM) interpretation of the positron excess observed by the PAMELA cosmic-ray (CR) detector through the identification of a Galactic diffuse gamma-ray component associated to DM-induced prompt and radiative emission. The goal is to present an analysis based on minimal sets of assumptions and extrapolations with respect to locally testable or measurable quantities. We discuss the differences between the spatial and spectral features for the DM-induced components (with an extended, possibly spherical, source function) and those for the standard CR contribution (…
We develop the framework for testing Lorentz invariance in the dark matter sector using galactic dynamics. We consider a Lorentz violating (LV) vector field acting on the dark matter component of a satellite galaxy orbiting in a host halo. We introduce a numerical model for the dynamics of satellites in a galactic halo and for a galaxy in a rich cluster to explore observational consequences of such an LV field. The orbital motion of a satellite excites a time dependent LV force which greatly affects its internal dynamics. Our analysis points out key observational signatures which serve as prob…
Signal predictions for galactic dark matter (DM) searches often rely on assumptions on the DM phase-space distribution function (DF) in halos. This applies to both particle (e.g. $p$-wave suppressed or Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation, scattering off atoms, etc.) and macroscopic DM candidates (e.g. microlensing of primordial black holes). As experiments and observations improve in precision, better assessing theoretical uncertainties becomes pressing in the prospect of deriving reliable constraints on DM candidates or trustworthy hints for detection. Most reliable predictions of DFs in halos a…
A long-range fifth force coupled to dark matter can induce a coupling to ordinary matter if the dark matter interacts with Standard Model fields. We consider constraints on such a scenario from both astrophysical observations and laboratory experiments. We also examine the case where the dark matter is a weakly interacting massive particle, and derive relations between the coupling to dark matter and the coupling to ordinary matter for different models. Currently, this scenario is most tightly constrained by galactic dynamics, but improvements in Eotvos experiments can probe unconstrained regi…
Following the death of Baron Loránd von Eötvös in 1919, his collaborators Desiderius Pekár and Eugen Fekete co-authored a paper in 1922 containing the results of a series of earlier experiments testing the identity of inertial and gravitational mass, the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP). Although the so-called "EPF" paper made no claim for any WEP violations, a subsequent 1986 reanalysis of the EPF paper revealed a pattern in their data suggesting the presence of a new ("fifth") force in nature. Although the EPF data, and the 1986 reanalysis of these data, present fairly compelling evidence fo…
Galactic rotation curves are often considered the first robust evidence for the existence of dark matter. However, even in the presence of a dark matter halo, other galactic-scale observations, such as the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation and the Radial Acceleration Relation, remain challenging to explain. This has motivated long-distance, infrared modifications to gravity as an alternative to the dark matter hypothesis as well as various DM theories with similar phenomenology. In general, the standard lore has been that any model that reduces to the phenomenology of MOdified Newtonian Dynamics …
