Processing sensitive data, such as those produced by body sensors, on third-party untrusted clouds is particularly challenging without compromising the privacy of the users generating it. Typically, these sensors generate large quantities of continuous data in a streaming fashion. Such vast amount of data must be processed efficiently and securely, even under strong adversarial models. The recent introduction in the mass-market of consumer-grade processors with Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), such as Intel SGX, paves the way to implement solutions that overcome less flexible approaches, such as those atop homomorphic encryption. We present a secure streaming processing system built on top of Intel SGX to showcase the viability of this approach with a system specifically fitted for medical data. We design and fully implement a prototype system that we evaluate with several realistic datasets. Our experimental results show that the proposed system achieves modest overhead compared to vanilla Spark while offering additional protection guarantees under powerful attackers and threat models.
Since the introduction at Crypto'05 by Juels and Weis of the protocol HB+, a lightweight protocol secure against active attacks but only in a detection based-model, many works have tried to enhance its security. We propose here a new approach to achieve resistance against Man-in-The-Middle attacks. Our requirements - in terms of extra communications and hardware - are surprisingly low.
With the rapid development of MANET, secure and practical authentication is becoming increasingly important. The existing works perform the research from two aspects, i.e., (a)secure key division and distributed storage, (b)secure distributed authentication. But there still exist several unsolved problems. Specifically, it may suffer from cheating problems and fault authentication attack, which can result in authentication failure and DoS attack towards authentication service. Besides, most existing schemes are not with satisfactory efficiency due to exponential arithmetic based on Shamir's sc…
The 5G network would fuel next-gen, bandwidth-heavy technologies such as automation, IoT, and AI on the factory floor. It will improve efficiency by powering AR overlays in workflows, as well as ensure safer practices and reduce the number of defects through predictive analytics and real-time detection of damage. The Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) in 5G networks will permit 5G NR and 4G LTE to coexist and will provide cost-effective and efficient solutions that enable a smooth transition from 4G to 5G. However, this increases the attack surface in the 5G networks. To the best of our knowledge,…
As a disruptive technology that originates from cryptocurrency, blockchain provides a trusted platform to facilitate industrial IoT (IIoT) applications. However, implementing a blockchain platform in IIoT scenarios confronts various security challenges due to the rigorous deployment condition. To this end, we present a novel design of secure blockchain based on trusted computing hardware for IIoT applications. Specifically, we employ the trusted execution environment (TEE) module and a customized security chip to safeguard the blockchain against different attacking vectors. Furthermore, we imp…
Intel SGX provisions shielded executions for security-sensitive computation, but lacks support for trusted system services (TSS), such as clock, network and filesystem. This makes \textit{enclaves} vulnerable to Iago attacks~\cite{DBLP:conf/asplos/CheckowayS13} in the face of a powerful malicious system. To mitigate this problem, we present Aurora, a novel architecture that provides TSSes via a secure channel between enclaves and devices on top of an untrusted system, and implement two types of TSSes, i.e. clock and end-to-end network. We evaluate our solution by porting SQLite and OpenSSL int…
Secure and trustworthy execution in heterogeneous SoCs is a major priority in the modern computing system. Security of SoCs mainly addresses two broad layers of trust issues: 1. Protection against hardware security threats(Side-channel, IP Privacy, Cloning, Fault Injection, and Denial of Service); and 2. Protection against malicious software attacks running on SoC processors. To resist malicious software-level attackers from gaining unauthorized access and compromising security, we propose a root of trust-based trusted execution mechanism \textbf{\textit{(named as \textbf{TrustToken}) }}. Trus…
Short Weierstrass's elliptic curves with underlying hard Elliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problems was widely used in Cryptographic applications. This paper introduces a new security notation 'trusted security' for computation methods of elliptic curves for cryptography. Three additional "trusted security acceptance criteria" is proposed to be met by the elliptic curves aimed for cryptography. Further, two cryptographically secure elliptic curves over 256 bit and 384 bit prime fields are demonstrated which are secure from ECDLP, ECC as well as trust perspectives. The proposed elliptic curves …
As an essential technology underpinning trusted computing, the trusted execution environment (TEE) allows one to launch computation tasks on both on- and off-premises data while assuring confidentiality and integrity. This article provides a systematic review and comparison of TEE-based secure computation protocols. We first propose a taxonomy that classifies secure computation protocols into three major categories, namely secure outsourced computation, secure distributed computation and secure multi-party computation. To enable a fair comparison of these protocols, we also present comprehensi…
Blockchain protocols are inherently limited in transaction throughput and latency. Recent efforts to address performance and scale blockchains have focused on off-chain payment channels. While such channels can achieve low latency and high throughput, deploying them securely on top of the Bitcoin blockchain has been difficult, partly because building a secure implementation requires changes to the underlying protocol and the ecosystem. We present Teechan, a full-duplex payment channel framework that exploits trusted execution environments. Teechan can be deployed securely on the existing Bitco…
A growing framework of legal and ethical requirements limit scientific and commercial evalua-tion of personal data. Typically, pseudonymization, encryption, or methods of distributed com-puting try to protect individual privacy. However, computational infrastructures still depend on human system administrators. This introduces severe security risks and has strong impact on privacy: system administrators have unlimited access to the computers that they manage in-cluding encryption keys and pseudonymization-tables. Distributed computing and data obfuscation technologies reduce but do not elimina…
We describe a concept to employ Trusted Computing technology to secure Conditional Access Systems (CAS) for DVB. Central is the embedding of a trusted platform module (TPM) into the set-top-box or residential home gateway. Various deployment scenarios exhibit possibilities of charging co-operation with mobile network operators (MNO), or other payment providers.

Distributed learning across a coalition of organizations allows the members of the coalition to train and share a model without sharing the data used to optimize this model. In this paper, we propose new secure architectures that guarantee preservation of data privacy, trustworthy sequence of iterative learning and equitable sharing of the learned model among each member of the coalition by using adequate encryption and blockchain mechanisms. We exemplify its deployment in the case of the distributed optimization of a deep learning convolutional neural network trained on medical images.
Application security traditionally strongly relies upon security of the underlying operating system. However, operating systems often fall victim to software attacks, compromising security of applications as well. To overcome this dependency, Intel introduced SGX, which allows to protect application code against a subverted or malicious OS by running it in a hardware-protected enclave. However, SGX lacks support for generic trusted I/O paths to protect user input and output between enclaves and I/O devices. This work presents SGXIO, a generic trusted path architecture for SGX, allowing user ap…
The aviation industry as well as the industries that benefit and are linked to it are ripe for innovation in the form of Big Data analytics. The number of available big data technologies is constantly growing, while at the same time the existing ones are rapidly evolving and empowered with new features. However, the Big Data era imposes the crucial challenge of how to effectively handle information security while managing massive and rapidly evolving data from heterogeneous data sources. While multiple technologies have emerged, there is a need to find a balance between multiple security requi…
The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted technological measures to control the spread of the disease. Private contact tracing (PCT) is one of the promising techniques for the purpose. However, the recently proposed Bluetooth-based PCT has several limitations in terms of functionality and flexibility. The existing systems are only able to detect direct contact (i.e., human-human contact), but cannot detect indirect contact (i.e., human-object, such as the disease transmission through surface). Moreover, the rule of risky contact cannot be flexibly changed with the environmental situation and the natu…
The aim of this technical report is to complement the work in [To et al. 2014] by proposing a Group Key Exchange protocol so that the Querier and TDSs (and TDSs themselves) can securely create and exchange the shared key. Then, the security of this protocol is formally proved using the game-based model. Finally, we perform the comparison between this protocol and other related works.
The unique identities of every mobile user (phone number,IMSI) and device (IMEI) are far from secure and are increasingly vulnerable to a variety of network-level threats. The exceedingly high reliance on the weak SIM authentication layer does not present any notion of end-to-end security for mobile users. We propose the design and implementation of Secure Mobile Identities (SMI), a repetitive key-exchange protocol that uses this weak SIM authentication as a foundation to enable mobile users to establish stronger identity authenticity. The security guarantees of SMI are directly reliant on the…
A critically important component of most signal processing procedures is that of computing the distance between signals. In multi-party processing applications where these signals belong to different parties, this introduces privacy challenges. The signals may themselves be private, and the parties to the computation may not be willing to expose them. Solutions proposed to the problem in the literature generally invoke homomorphic encryption schemes, secure multi-party computation, or other cryptographic methods which introduce significant computational complexity into the proceedings, often t…
Enclaves have emerged as a particularly compelling primitive to implement trusted execution environments: strongly isolated sensitive user-mode processes in a largely untrusted software environment. While the threat models employed by various enclave systems differ, the high-level guarantees they offer are essentially the same: attestation of an enclave's initial state, as well as a guarantee of enclave integrity and privacy in the presence of an adversary. This work describes Sanctorum, a small trusted code base (TCB), consisting of a generic enclave-capable system, which is sufficient to imp…
Verification is the process of checking whether a product has been implemented according to its prescribed specifications. We study the case of a designer (the developer) that needs to verify its design by a third party (the verifier), by making publicly available a limited amount of information about the design, namely a diagram of interconnections between the different design components, but not the components themselves or the intermediate values passed between components. We formalize this notion of limited information using tabular expressions as the description method for both the specif…
It has been a long standing problem to securely outsource computation tasks to an untrusted party with integrity and confidentiality guarantees. While fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) is a promising technique that allows computations performed on the encrypted data, it suffers from a significant slow down to the computation. In this paper we propose a hybrid solution that uses the latest hardware Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to assist FHE by moving the bootstrapping step, which is one of the major obstacles in designing practical FHE schemes, to a secured SGX enclave. TEEFHE, the hy…
Virtual Trusted Platform Modules (vTPMs) have been widely used in commercial cloud platforms (e.g. Google Cloud, VMware Cloud, and Microsoft Azure) to provide virtual root-of-trust for virtual machines. Unfortunately, current state-of-the-art vTPM implementations are suffering from confidential data leakage and high performance overhead. In this paper, we present SvTPM, a secure and efficient software-based vTPM implementation based on hardware-rooted Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), providing a whole life cycle protection of vTPMs in the cloud. SvTPM offers strong isolation protection, so…
Over the last years, security kernels have played a promising role in reshaping the landscape of platform security on today's ubiquitous embedded devices. Security kernels, such as separation kernels, enable constructing high-assurance mixed-criticality execution platforms. They reduce the software portion of the system's trusted computing base to a thin layer, which enforces isolation between low- and high-criticality components. The reduced trusted computing base minimizes the system attack surface and facilitates the use of formal methods to ensure functional correctness and security of the…
Proxy re-encryption (PRE) securely enables the re-encryption of ciphertexts from one key to another, without relying on trusted parties, i.e., it offers delegation of decryption rights. PRE allows a semi-trusted third party termed as a "proxy" to securely divert encrypted files of user A (delegator) to user B (delegatee) without revealing any information about the underlying files to the proxy. To eliminate the necessity of having a costly certificate verification process, Green and Ateniese introduced an identity-based PRE (IB-PRE). The potential applicability of IB-PRE leads to intensive res…
Cloud computing is an Internet-based computing, where shared resources, software and information, are provided to computers and devices on-demand. It provides people the way to share distributed resources and services that belong to different organization. Since cloud computing uses distributed resources in open environment, thus it is important to provide the security and trust to share the data for developing cloud computing applications. In this paper we assess how can cloud providers earn their customers' trust and provide the security, privacy and reliability, when a third party is proces…
Differential privacy offers a formal privacy guarantee for individuals, but many deployments of differentially private systems require a trusted third party (the data curator). We propose DuetSGX, a system that uses secure hardware (Intel's SGX) to eliminate the need for a trusted data curator. Data owners submit encrypted data that can be decrypted only within a secure enclave running the DuetSGX system, ensuring that sensitive data is never available to the data curator. Analysts submit queries written in the Duet language, which is specifically designed for verifying that programs satisfy d…
Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) are used to protect sensitive data and run secure execution for security-critical applications, by providing an environment isolated from the rest of the system. However, over the last few years, TEEs have been proven weak, as either TEEs built upon security-oriented hardware extensions (e.g., Arm TrustZone) or resorting to dedicated secure elements were exploited multiple times. In this project, we introduce Trusted Execution Environments On-Demand (TEEOD), a novel TEE design that leverages the programmable logic (PL) in the heterogeneous system on chips …
This encryption algorithm is mainly designed for having a secure file transfer in the low privilege servers and as well as in a secured environment too. This methodology will be implemented in the data center and other important data transaction sectors of the organisation where the encoding process of the software will be done by the database administrator or system administrators and his trusted clients will have decoding process of the software. This software will not be circulated to the unauthorised customers.
We present a method to secure the complete path between a server and the local human user at a network node. This is useful for scenarios like internet banking, electronic signatures, or online voting. Protection of input authenticity and output integrity and authenticity is accomplished by a combination of traditional and novel technologies, e.g., SSL, ActiveX, and DirectX. Our approach does not require administrative privileges to deploy and is hence suitable for consumer applications. Results are based on the implementation of a proof-of-concept application for the Windows platform.
Memory disaggregation provides efficient memory utilization across network-connected systems. It allows a node to use part of memory in remote nodes in the same cluster. Recent studies have improved RDMA-based memory disaggregation systems, supporting lower latency and higher bandwidth than the prior generation of disaggregated memory. However, the current disaggregated memory systems manage remote memory only at coarse granularity due to the limitation of the access validation mechanism of RDMA. In such systems, to support fine-grained remote page allocation, the trustworthiness of all partic…
We follow two main objectives in this article. On the one hand, we introduce a security model called LORBACPA$^+$ for self-synchronized stream ciphers which is stronger than the blockwise LOR-IND-CPA, where we show that standard constructions as delayed CBC or similar existing self-synchronized modes of operation are not secure in this stronger model. Then, on the other hand, following contributions of G.~Millérioux et.al., we introduce a new self-synchronized stream cipher and prove its security in LORBACPA$^+$ model.
In this paper we explore how recent technologies can improve the security of optical networks. In particular, we study how to use quantum key distribution (QKD) in common optical network infrastructures and propose a method to overcome its distance limitations. QKD is the first technology offering information theoretic secret-key distribution that relies only on the fundamental principles of quantum physics. Point-to-point QKD devices have reached a mature industrial state; however, these devices are severely limited in distance, since signals at the quantum level (e.g. single photons) are hig…
In this paper, we propose a framework for lightning-fast privacy-preserving outsourced computation framework in the cloud, which we refer to as LightCom. Using LightCom, a user can securely achieve the outsource data storage and fast secure data processing in a single cloud server different from the existing multi-server outsourced computation model. Specifically, we first present a general secure computation framework for LightCom under the cloud server equipped with multiple Trusted Processing Units (TPUs) which face the side-channel attack. Under the LightCom, we design two specified fast p…
In TrustZone-assisted TEEs, the trusted OS has unrestricted access to both secure and normal world memory. Unfortunately, this architectural limitation has opened an aisle of exploration for attackers, which have demonstrated how to leverage a chain of exploits to hijack the trusted OS and gain full control of the system, targeting (i) the rich execution environment (REE), (ii) all trusted applications (TAs), and (iii) the secure monitor. In this paper, we propose ReZone. The main novelty behind ReZone design relies on leveraging TrustZone-agnostic hardware primitives available on commercially…
Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) are rapidly emerging as a root-of-trust for protecting sensitive applications and data using hardware-backed isolated worlds of execution. TEEs provide robust assurances regarding critical algorithm execution, tamper-resistant credential storage, and platform integrity using remote attestation. However, the challenge of remotely managing credentials between TEEs remains largely unaddressed in existing literature. In this work, we present novel protocols using mutual attestation for supporting four aspects of secure remote credential management with TEEs: b…
In this work, we study how to securely evaluate the value of trading data without requiring a trusted third party. We focus on the important machine learning task of classification. This leads us to propose a provably secure four-round protocol that computes the value of the data to be traded without revealing the data to the potential acquirer. The theoretical results demonstrate a number of important properties of the proposed protocol. In particular, we prove the security of the proposed protocol in the honest-but-curious adversary model.
Avionics networks rely on a set of stringent reliability and safety requirements. In existing deployments, these networks are based on a wired technology, which supports these requirements. Furthermore, this technology simplifies the security management of the network since certain assumptions can be safely made, including the inability of an attacker to access the network, and the fact that it is almost impossible for an attacker to introduce a node into the network. The proposal for Avionics Wireless Networks (AWNs), currently under development by multiple aerospace working groups, promises …
