We present a conditional generative adversarial model to draw realistic samples from paired fashion clothing distribution and provide real samples to pair with arbitrary fashion units. More concretely, given an image of a shirt, obtained from a fashion magazine, a brochure or even any random click on ones phone, we draw realistic samples from a parameterized conditional distribution learned as a conditional generative adversarial network ($c^+$GAN) to generate the possible pants which can go with the shirt. We start with a classical cGAN model as proposed by Mirza and Osindero [arXiv:1411.1784] and modify both the generator and discriminator to work on captured-in-the-wild data with no human alignment. We gather a dataset from web crawled data, systematically develop a method which counters the problems inherent to such data, and finally present plausible results based on our technique. We propose simple ideas to evaluate how these techniques can conquer the cognitive gap that exists when arbitrary clothing articles need to be paired with another relevant article, based on similarity of search results.
In this paper, we introduce attribute-aware fashion-editing, a novel task, to the fashion domain. We re-define the overall objectives in AttGAN and propose the Fashion-AttGAN model for this new task. A dataset is constructed for this task with 14,221 and 22 attributes, which has been made publically available. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our Fashion-AttGAN on fashion editing over the original AttGAN.
We present Poly-GAN, a novel conditional GAN architecture that is motivated by Fashion Synthesis, an application where garments are automatically placed on images of human models at an arbitrary pose. Poly-GAN allows conditioning on multiple inputs and is suitable for many tasks, including image alignment, image stitching, and inpainting. Existing methods have a similar pipeline where three different networks are used to first align garments with the human pose, then perform stitching of the aligned garment and finally refine the results. Poly-GAN is the first instance where a common architect…

Fashion-image editing represents a challenging computer vision task, where the goal is to incorporate selected apparel into a given input image. Most existing techniques, known as Virtual Try-On methods, deal with this task by first selecting an example image of the desired apparel and then transferring the clothing onto the target person. Conversely, in this paper, we consider editing fashion images with text descriptions. Such an approach has several advantages over example-based virtual try-on techniques, e.g.: (i) it does not require an image of the target fashion item, and (ii) it allows …

Recommender systems aim to find an accurate and efficient mapping from historic data of user-preferred items to a new item that is to be liked by a user. Towards this goal, energy-based sequence generative adversarial nets (EB-SeqGANs) are adopted for recommendation by learning a generative model for the time series of user-preferred items. By recasting the energy function as the feature function, the proposed EB-SeqGANs is interpreted as an instance of maximum-entropy imitation learning.
Virtual fitting room is a challenging task yet useful feature for e-commerce platforms and fashion designers. Existing works can only detect very few types of fashion items. Besides they did poorly in changing the texture and style of the selected fashion items. In this project, we propose a novel approach to address this problem. We firstly used Mask R-CNN to find the regions of different fashion items, and secondly used Neural Style Transfer to change the style of the selected fashion items. The dataset we used is composed of images from PaperDoll dataset and annotations provided by eBay's M…

We present a novel method to solve image analogy problems : it allows to learn the relation between paired images present in training data, and then generalize and generate images that correspond to the relation, but were never seen in the training set. Therefore, we call the method Conditional Analogy Generative Adversarial Network (CAGAN), as it is based on adversarial training and employs deep convolutional neural networks. An especially interesting application of that technique is automatic swapping of clothing on fashion model photos. Our work has the following contributions. First, the d…
Image generation has raised tremendous attention in both academic and industrial areas, especially for the conditional and target-oriented image generation, such as criminal portrait and fashion design. Although the current studies have achieved preliminary results along this direction, they always focus on class labels as the condition where spatial contents are randomly generated from latent vectors. Edge details are usually blurred since spatial information is difficult to preserve. In light of this, we propose a novel Spatially Constrained Generative Adversarial Network (SCGAN), which deco…
The designers' tendency to adhere to a specific mental set and heavy emotional investment in their initial ideas often hinder their ability to innovate during the design thinking and ideation process. In the fashion industry, in particular, the growing diversity of customers' needs, the intense global competition, and the shrinking time-to-market (a.k.a., "fast fashion") further exacerbate this challenge for designers. Recent advances in deep generative models have created new possibilities to overcome the cognitive obstacles of designers through automated generation and/or editing of design c…

The recent success of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) is a result of their ability to generate high quality images from a latent vector space. An important application is the generation of images from a text description, where the text description is encoded and further used in the conditioning of the generated image. Thus the generative network has to additionally learn a mapping from the text latent vector space to a highly complex and multi-modal image data distribution, which makes the training of such models challenging. To handle the complexities of fashion image and meta data, we …
In medical imaging, obtaining large amounts of labeled data is often a hurdle, because annotations and pathologies are scarce. Anomaly detection is a method that is capable of detecting unseen abnormal data while only being trained on normal (unannotated) data. Several algorithms based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) exist to perform this task, yet certain limitations are in place because of the instability of GANs. This paper proposes a new method by combining an existing method, GANomaly, with progressively growing GANs. The latter is known to be more stable, considering its abilit…
In this paper, we propose a method that disentangles the effects of multiple input conditions in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). In particular, we demonstrate our method in controlling color, texture, and shape of a generated garment image for computer-aided fashion design. To disentangle the effect of input attributes, we customize conditional GANs with consistency loss functions. In our experiments, we tune one input at a time and show that we can guide our network to generate novel and realistic images of clothing articles. In addition, we present a fashion design process that estim…

Research and education in machine learning needs diverse, representative, and open datasets that contain sufficient samples to handle the necessary training, validation, and testing tasks. Currently, the Recommender Systems area includes a large number of subfields in which accuracy and beyond accuracy quality measures are continuously improved. To feed this research variety, it is necessary and convenient to reinforce the existing datasets with synthetic ones. This paper proposes a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based method to generate collaborative filtering datasets in a parameterize…
Amidst the rapid growth of fashion e-commerce, remote fitting of fashion articles remains a complex and challenging problem and a main driver of customers' frustration. Despite the recent advances in 3D virtual try-on solutions, such approaches still remain limited to a very narrow - if not only a handful - selection of articles, and often for only one size of those fashion items. Other state-of-the-art approaches that aim to support customers find what fits them online mostly require a high level of customer engagement and privacy-sensitive data (such as height, weight, age, gender, belly sha…
The field of deep generative modeling is dominated by generative adversarial networks (GANs). However, the training of GANs often lacks stability, fails to converge, and suffers from model collapse. It takes an assortment of tricks to solve these problems, which may be difficult to understand for those seeking to apply generative modeling. Instead, we propose two novel generative autoencoders, AE-OTtrans and AE-OTgen, which rely on optimal transport instead of adversarial training. AE-OTtrans and AEOTgen, unlike VAE and WAE, preserve the manifold of the data; they do not force the latent distr…
With the recent progress in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), it is imperative for media and visual forensics to develop detectors which can identify and attribute images to the model generating them. Existing works have shown to attribute images to their corresponding GAN sources with high accuracy. However, these works are limited to a closed set scenario, failing to generalize to GANs unseen during train time and are therefore, not scalable with a steady influx of new GANs. We present an iterative algorithm for discovering images generated from previously unseen GANs by exploiting the…

Interactive fashion image manipulation, which enables users to edit images with sketches and color strokes, is an interesting research problem with great application value. Existing works often treat it as a general inpainting task and do not fully leverage the semantic structural information in fashion images. Moreover, they directly utilize conventional convolution and normalization layers to restore the incomplete image, which tends to wash away the sketch and color information. In this paper, we propose a novel Fashion Editing Generative Adversarial Network (FE-GAN), which is capable of ma…
Adversarial examples reveal the vulnerability and unexplained nature of neural networks. Studying the defense of adversarial examples is of considerable practical importance. Most adversarial examples that misclassify networks are often undetectable by humans. In this paper, we propose a defense model to train the classifier into a human-perception classification model with shape preference. The proposed model comprising a texture transfer network (TTN) and an auxiliary defense generative adversarial networks (GAN) is called Human-perception Auxiliary Defense GAN (HAD-GAN). The generator of our model applies a residual U-net structure, with multi-scale residual blocks to encode features, and attention residual blocks to help decode and rebuild pedestrian images. Fashion attribute classification is of great importance to many high-level tasks such as fashion item search, fashion trend analysis, fashion recommendation, etc. The task is challenging due to the extremely imbalanced data distribution, particularly the attributes with only a few positive samples. In this paper, we introduce a hard-aware pipeline to make full use of "hard" samples/attributes. We first propose Hard-Aware BackPropagation (HABP) to efficiently and adaptively focus on training "hard" data. Then for the identified hard labels, we propose to synthesize more complementary samples fo…

The vanilla GAN (Goodfellow et al. 2014) suffers from mode collapse deeply, which usually manifests as that the images generated by generators tend to have a high similarity amongst them, even though their corresponding latent vectors have been very different. In this paper, we introduce a pluggable diversity penalty module (DPM) to alleviate mode collapse of GANs. It reduces the similarity of image pairs in feature space, i.e., if two latent vectors are different, then we enforce the generator to generate two images with different features. The normalized Gram matrix is used to measure the si…

Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) training process, in most cases, apply Uniform or Gaussian sampling methods in the latent space, which probably spends most of the computation on examples that can be properly handled and easy to generate. Theoretically, importance sampling speeds up stochastic optimization in supervised learning by prioritizing training examples. In this paper, we explore the possibility of adapting importance sampling into adversarial learning. We use importance sampling to replace Uniform and Gaussian sampling methods in the latent space and employ normalizing flow to a…

Many neural-based recommender systems were proposed in recent years and part of them used Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to model user-item interactions. However, the exploration of Wasserstein GAN with Gradient Penalty (WGAN-GP) on recommendation has received relatively less scrutiny. In this paper, we focus on two questions: 1- Can we successfully apply WGAN-GP on recommendation and does this approach give an advantage compared to the best GAN models? 2- Are GAN-based recommender systems relevant? To answer the first question, we propose a recommender system based on WGAN-GP called CF…

For bidirectional joint image-text modeling, we develop variational hetero-encoder (VHE) randomized generative adversarial network (GAN), a versatile deep generative model that integrates a probabilistic text decoder, probabilistic image encoder, and GAN into a coherent end-to-end multi-modality learning framework. VHE randomized GAN (VHE-GAN) encodes an image to decode its associated text, and feeds the variational posterior as the source of randomness into the GAN image generator. We plug three off-the-shelf modules, including a deep topic model, a ladder-structured image encoder, and StackG…
In the generator of typical Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a noise is inputted to generate fake samples via a series of convolutional operations. However, current noise generation models merely relies on the information from the pixel space, which increases the difficulty to approach the target distribution. Fortunately, the long proven wavelet transformation is able to decompose multiple spectral information from the images. In this work, we propose a novel multi-channel wavelet-based filtering method for GANs, to cope with this problem. When embedding a wavelet deconvolution layer i…

GANs can also be utilised for a variety of science-related activities, including protein engineering, astronomical data processing, remote sensing image dehazing, and crystal structure synthesis. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are one of the most powerful generative models, but always require a large and balanced dataset to train. Traditional GANs are not applicable to generate minority-class images in a highly imbalanced dataset. Balancing GAN (BAGAN) is proposed to mitigate this problem, but it is unstable when images in different classes look similar, e.g. flowers and cells. In this work, we propose a supervised autoencoder with an intermediate embedding model to disperse the labeled latent vectors. With the improved autoencoder initialization, we also build an architecture …

This paper presents Capsule GAN, a Generative adversarial network using Capsule Network not only in the discriminator but also in the generator. Recently, Generative adversarial networks (GANs) has been intensively studied. However, generating images by GANs is difficult. Therefore, GANs sometimes generate poor quality images. These GANs use convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, CNNs have the defect that the relational information between features of the image may be lost. Capsule Network, proposed by Hinton in 2017, overcomes the defect of CNNs. Capsule GAN reported previously uses C…

Previous works on sequential learning address the problem of forgetting in discriminative models. In this paper we consider the case of generative models. In particular, we investigate generative adversarial networks (GANs) in the task of learning new categories in a sequential fashion. We first show that sequential fine tuning renders the network unable to properly generate images from previous categories (i.e. forgetting). Addressing this problem, we propose Memory Replay GANs (MeRGANs), a conditional GAN framework that integrates a memory replay generator. We study two methods to prevent fo…
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are a class of deep generative models which aim to learn a target distribution in an unsupervised fashion. While they were successfully applied to many problems, training a GAN is a notoriously challenging task and requires a significant number of hyperparameter tuning, neural architecture engineering, and a non-trivial amount of "tricks". The success in many practical applications coupled with the lack of a measure to quantify the failure modes of GANs resulted in a plethora of proposed losses, regularization and normalization schemes, as well as neural …
Nowadays, recommender systems and search engines play an integral role in fashion e-commerce. Still, many challenges lie ahead, and this study tries to tackle some. This article first suggests a content-based fashion recommender system that uses a parallel neural network to take a single fashion item shop image as input and make in-shop recommendations by listing similar items available in the store. Next, the same structure is enhanced to personalize the results based on user preferences. This work then introduces a background augmentation technique that makes the system more robust to out-of…

We propose a GAN design which models multiple distributions effectively and discovers their commonalities and particularities. Each data distribution is modeled with a mixture of $K$ generator distributions. As the generators are partially shared between the modeling of different true data distributions, shared ones captures the commonality of the distributions, while non-shared ones capture unique aspects of them. We show the effectiveness of our method on various datasets (MNIST, Fashion MNIST, CIFAR-10, Omniglot, CelebA) with compelling results.

Recent image inpainting methods have made great progress but often struggle to generate plausible image structures when dealing with large holes in complex images. This is partially due to the lack of effective network structures that can capture both the long-range dependency and high-level semantics of an image. In recent years, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have drawn a lot of attentions for learning the underlying distribution of data in various applications. Despite their wide applicability, training GANs is notoriously difficult. This difficulty is due to the min-max nature of the resulting optimization problem and the lack of proper tools of solving general (non-convex, non-concave) min-max optimization problems. In this paper, we try to alleviate this problem by proposing a new generative network that relies on the use of random discriminators instead of adversarial design. This design …
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have achieved great success in generating realistic images. Most of these are conditional models, although acquisition of class labels is expensive and time-consuming in practice. To reduce the dependence on labeled data, we propose an un-conditional generative adversarial model, called K-Means-GAN (KM-GAN), which incorporates the idea of updating centers in K-Means into GANs. Specifically, we redesign the framework of GANs by applying K-Means on the features extracted from the discriminator. With obtained labels from K-Means, we propose new objective fun…
Echocardiography (echo) is a common means of evaluating cardiac conditions. Due to the label scarcity, semi-supervised paradigms in automated echo analysis are getting traction. One of the most sought-after problems in echo is the segmentation of cardiac structures (e.g. chambers). We propose an approach to address two issues that commonly occur during training of unsupervised GANs. First, since GANs use only a continuous latent distribution to embed multiple classes or clusters of data, they often do not correctly handle the structural discontinuity between disparate classes in a latent space. Second, discriminators of GANs easily forget about past generated samples by generators, incurring instability during adversarial training. We argue that these two infamous problems of unsupervised GAN training can be largely alleviated by a learnable memory network to which both …

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) were originally envisioned as unsupervised generative models that learn to follow a target distribution. Variants such as conditional GANs, auxiliary-classifier GANs (ACGANs) project GANs on to supervised and semi-supervised learning frameworks by providing labelled data and using multi-class discriminators. In this paper, we approach the supervised GAN problem from a different perspective, one that is motivated by the philosophy of the famous Persian poet Rumi who said, "The art of knowing is knowing what to ignore." Humans accumulate knowledge in a lifelong fashion. Modern deep neural networks, on the other hand, are susceptible to catastrophic forgetting: when adapted to perform new tasks, they often fail to preserve their performance on previously learned tasks. Given a sequence of tasks, a naive approach addressing catastrophic forgetting is to train a separate standalone model for each task, which scales the total number of parameters drastically without efficiently utilizing previous models. In contrast, we propose a parameter efficient framework, Piggyback GAN, which learns the current task by build…

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are modern methods to learn the underlying distribution of a data set. GANs have been widely used in sample synthesis, de-noising, domain transfer, etc. GANs, however, are designed in a model-free fashion where no additional information about the underlying distribution is available. In many applications, however, practitioners have access to the underlying independence graph of the variables, either as a Bayesian network or a Markov Random Field (MRF). We ask: how can one use this additional information in designing model-based GANs? In this paper, we pr…
We propose a simple, tractable lower bound on the mutual information contained in the joint generative density of any latent variable generative model: the GILBO (Generative Information Lower BOund). It offers a data-independent measure of the complexity of the learned latent variable description, giving the log of the effective description length. It is well-defined for both VAEs and GANs. We compute the GILBO for 800 GANs and VAEs each trained on four datasets (MNIST, FashionMNIST, CIFAR-10 and CelebA) and discuss the results.
With the rapid growth of online fashion market, demand for effective fashion recommendation systems has never been greater. In fashion recommendation, the ability to find items that goes well with a few other items based on style is more important than picking a single item based on the user's entire purchase history. Since the same user may have purchased dress suits in one month and casual denims in another, it is impossible to learn the latent style features of those items using only the user ratings. If we were able to represent the style features of fashion items in a reasonable way, we w…
