We explore the correlation between the pre-merger tidal deformability and the post-merger remnant oscillations seen in numerical simulation of neutron star binaries, with the aim of understanding to what extent the physics support the existence of such a relation. We consider the impact of thermal and rotational effects and argue that the proposed relation does, indeed, make sense and provide simple arguments that help explain the result.
We study mergers of ergoregions in $d+1$-dimensional vacuum gravity. At the merger point, where the ergosurfaces bounding each ergoregion just touch, solutions exhibit universal behavior when there is rotation only in one plane: the angle between the merging ergosurfaces depends only on the symmetries of the solution, not on any other details of the configuration. We show that universality follows from the fact that the relevant component of Einstein's equation reduces to Laplace equation at the point of merger. Thus ergoregion mergers mimic mergers of Newtonian equipotentials and have similar…
The post-merger gravitational wave (GW) emission from a binary neutron star merger is expected to provide exciting new constraints on the dense-matter equation of state (EoS). Such constraints rely, by and large, on the existence of quasi-universal relations, which relate the peak frequencies of the post-merger GW spectrum to properties of the neutron star structure in a model-independent way. In this work, we report on violations of existing quasi-universal relations between the peak spectral frequency, f_2, and the stellar radius, for EoSs models with backwards-bending slopes in their mass-r…
It has been proposed that primordial black holes (PBHs) form binaries in the radiation dominated era. Once formed, some fraction of them may merge within the age of the Universe by gravitational radiation reaction. We investigate the merger rate of the PBH binaries when the PBHs have a distribution of masses around ${\cal O}(10) M_\odot$, which is a generalization of the previous studies where the PBHs are assumed to have the same mass. After deriving a formula for the merger time probability distribution in the PBH mass plane, we evaluate it under two different approximations. We identify a q…
We elucidate the feature of gravitational waves (GWs) from binary neutron star merger collapsing to a black hole by general relativistic simulation. We show that GW spectrum imprints the coalescence dynamics, formation process of disk, equation of state for neutron stars, total masses, and mass ratio. A formation mechanism of the central engine of short $γ$-ray bursts, which are likely to be composed of a black hole and surrounding disk, therefore could be constrained by GW observation.
The binary black hole merger waveform is both simple and universal. Adopting an effective asymptotic description of the dynamics, we aim at accounting for such universality in terms of underlying (effective) integrable structures. More specifically, under a ``wave-mean flow'' perspective, we propose that fast degrees of freedom corresponding to the observed waveform would be subject to effective linear dynamics, propagating on a slowly evolving background subject to (effective) non-linear integrable dynamics. The Painlevé property of the latter would be implemented in terms of the so-called Pa…
The detection of a binary neutron star merger in 2017 through both gravitational waves and electromagnetic emission opened a new era of multimessenger astronomy. The understanding of the magnetic field amplification triggered by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability during the merger is still a numerically unresolved problem because of the relevant small scales involved. One of the uncertainties comes from the simplifications usually assumed in the initial magnetic topology of merging neutron stars. We perform high-resolution, convergent large-eddy simulations of binary neutron star mergers, follow…
We study the neutron star axisymmetric critical solution previously found in the numerical studies of neutron star mergers. Using neutron star-like initial data and performing similar merger simulations, we demonstrate that the solution is indeed a semi-attractor on the threshold plane separating the basin of a neutron star and the basin of a black hole in the solution space of the Einstein equations. In order to explore the extent of the attraction basin of the neutron star semiattractor, we construct initial data phase spaces for these neutron star-like initial data. From these phase spaces,…
Recent years have witnessed tremendous progress in numerical relativity and an ever improving performance of ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors. In preparation for Advanced LIGO and a new era in gravitational wave astronomy, the numerical relativity and gravitational wave data analysis communities are collaborating to ascertain the most useful role for numerical relativity waveforms in the detection and characterization of binary black hole coalescences. In this paper, we explore the detectability of equal mass, merging black hole binaries with precessing spins and total…
Determining the phase structure of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and its Equation of State (EOS) at densities and temperatures realized inside neutron stars and their mergers is a long-standing open problem. The holographic V-QCD framework provides a model for the EOS of dense and hot QCD, which describes the deconfinement phase transition between a dense baryonic and a quark matter phase. We use this model in fully general relativistic hydrodynamic (GRHD) simulations to study the formation of quark matter and the emitted gravitational wave signal of binary systems that are similar to the first…
High-energy interactions of charged black holes in full general relativity II: Near-extremal merger remnants and universality with the irreducible mass
We perform a sequence of binary black hole simulations with increasingly small mass ratios, reaching to a 128:1 binary that displays 13 orbits before merger. Based on a detailed convergence study of the $q=m_1/m_2=1/15$ nonspinning case, we apply additional mesh refinements levels around the smaller hole horizon to reach successively the $q=1/32$, $q=1/64$, and $q=1/128$ cases. Roughly a linear computational resources scaling with $1/q$ is observed on 8-nodes simulations. We compute the remnant properties of the merger: final mass, spin, and recoil velocity, finding precise consistency between…
Recent calculations of the recoil velocity in black-hole binary mergers have found kick velocities of $\approx2500 $km/s for equal-mass binaries with anti-aligned initial spins in the orbital plane. In general the dynamics of spinning black holes can be extremely complicated and are difficult to analyze and understand. In contrast, the ``superkick'' configuration is an example with a high degree of symmetry that also exhibits exciting physics. We exploit the simplicity of this ``test case'' to study more closely the role of spin in black-hole recoil and find that: the recoil is with good accur…
The space-based gravitational wave detector LISA will observe mergers of massive black hole binary systems (MBHBs) to cosmological distances, as well as inspiralling stellar-origin (or stellar-mass) binaries (SBHBs) years before they enter the LIGO/Virgo band. Much remains to be explored for the parameter recovery of both classes of systems. Previous MBHB analyses relied on inspiral-only signals and/or a simplified Fisher matrix analysis, while SBHBs have not yet been extensively analyzed with Bayesian methods. We accelerate likelihood computations by (i) using a Fourier-domain response of the…
The physics of neutron stars can be studied with gravitational waves emitted from coalescing binary systems. Tidal effects become significant during the last few orbits and can be visible in the gravitational-wave spectrum above 500 Hz. After the merger, the neutron star remnant oscillates at frequencies above 1 kHz and can collapse into a black hole. Gravitational-wave detectors with a sensitivity of ~10^{-24} strain/sqHz at 2-4 kHz can observe these oscillations from a source which is ~100 Mpc away. The current observatories, such as LIGO and Virgo, are limited by shot noise at high frequenc…

The connection between short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) and binary neutron star (BNS) mergers was recently confirmed by the association of GRB 170817A with the merger event GW170817. However, no conclusive indications were obtained on whether the merger remnant that powered the SGRB jet was an accreting black hole (BH) or a long-lived massive neutron star (NS). Here, we explore the latter case via BNS merger simulations covering up to 250 ms after merger. We report, for the first time in a full merger simulation, the formation of a magnetically-driven collimated outflow along the spin axis of th…
Determining the differential-rotation law of compact stellar objects produced in binary neutron stars mergers or core-collapse supernovae is an old problem in relativistic astrophysics. Addressing this problem is important because it impacts directly on the maximum mass these objects can attain and hence on the threshold to black-hole formation under realistic conditions. Using the results from a large number of numerical simulations in full general relativity of binary neutron star mergers described with various equations of state and masses, we study the rotational properties of the resultin…
The first neutron star (NS) merger observed by advanced LIGO and Virgo, GW170817, and its fireworks of electromagnetic counterparts across the entire electromagnetic spectrum marked the beginning of multi-messenger astronomy and astrophysics with gravitational waves. The ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared emission was consistent with being powered by the radioactive decay of nuclei synthesized in the merger ejecta by the rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Starting from an outline of the inferred properties of this 'kilonova' emission, I discuss possible astrophysical sites for r-p…
Extending previous work by a number of authors, we have recently presented a new approach in which the detection of gravitational waves from merging neutron star binaries can be used to determine the equation of state of matter at nuclear density and hence the structure of neutron stars. In particular, after performing a large number of numerical-relativity simulations of binaries with nuclear equations of state, we have found that the post-merger emission is characterized by two distinct and robust spectral features. While the high-frequency peak was already shown to be associated with the os…
The detection of binary neutron star mergers represents one of the most important and complex astrophysical discoveries of the recent years. One of the unclear aspects of the problem is the turbulent magnetic field amplification, initially triggered by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at much smaller scales than any reachable numerical resolution nowadays. Here we present numerical simulations of the first ten milliseconds of a binary neutron star merger. First, we confirm in detail how the simulated amplification depends on the numerical resolution and is distributed on a broad range of scale…
Neutron stars (NSs) are extraordinary not only because they are the densest form of matter in the visible Universe but also because they can generate B-fields ten orders of magnitude larger than those currently constructed on Earth. The combination of extreme gravity with the enormous electromagnetic (EM) fields gives rise to spectacular phenomena like those observed on August 2017 with the merger of a binary neutron star (NSNS) system, an event that generated a gravitational wave (GW) signal, a short $γ$-ray burst (sGRB), and a kilonova. This event serves as the highlight so far of the era of…
We perform new longterm (15-16 orbits) simulations of coalescing binary neutron stars in numerical relativity using an updated Einstein's equation solver, employing low-eccentricity initial data, and modeling the neutron stars by a piecewise polytropic equation of state. A convergence study shows that our new results converge more rapidly than the third order and using the determined convergence order, we construct an extrapolated waveform for which the estimated total phase error should be less than 1 radian. We then compare the extrapolated waveforms with those calculated by the latest effec…
Three-dimensional simulations for the merger of binary neutron stars (BNSs) are performed in the framework of full general relativity. We pay particular attention to the black hole (BH) formation case and to the resulting mass of the surrounding disk for exploring possibility for formation of the central engine of short-duration gamma-ray bursts. Hybrid equations of state (EOSs) are adopted mimicking realistic, stiff nuclear EOSs, for which the maximum allowed gravitational mass of cold and spherical neutron stars (NSs), M_sph, is larger than 2M_sun. For the simulations, we focus on BNSs of th…
