Extremely High energy peaked BL Lac (EHBL) objects are a special class of blazars with peculiar observational properties at X-ray and $γ$--ray energies. The observations of these sources indicate hard X-ray and $γ$--ray spectra and absence of rapid flux variations in the multi-wavelength light curves. These observational features challenge the leptonic models for blazars due to unusually hard particle spectrum in the emission region of the blazar jet and provide a strong motivation for exploring alternative scenarios to interpret the broad-band emission from blazars. At present, only few TeV blazars have been observed as EHBL objects in the extragalactic Universe. Due to their hard $γ$--ray spectra and long term variability, the observations of EHBL type of blazars at different redshifts help in probing the cosmic magnetic field and extragalactic background light in the Universe. Such objects also provide astrophysical sites to explore the particle acceleration mechanisms like magnetic reconnection and second order Fermi acceleration. Therefore, it has become important to identify more objects as EHBL using the observations available in the literature. Recent studies on the blazar Mrk 501 indicate that this source may exhibit an EHBL behaviour. In this paper, we use long term observations of Mrk 501 to explore its nature. Two sets of data, related to low and high/flaring activity states of Mrk 501, have been presented and compared with the observed features of a few well known EHBL type of blazars.
Mrk\,622 is a Compton Thick AGN and a double-peaked narrow emission line galaxy, thus a dual AGN candidate. In this work, new optical long-slit spectroscopic observations clearly show that this object is rather a triple peaked narrow emission line galaxy, with both blue and red shifted narrow emission lines, as well as a much narrower emission line centred at the host galaxy systemic velocity. The average velocity offset between the blue and red shifted components is $\sim$500 km\,s$^{-1}$, which is producing the apparent double-peaked emission lines. These two components are in the loci of AG…
A detailed multi-wavelength study of the properties of the triple-peaked AGN Mrk\,622 showing different aspects of the nuclear emission region is presented. Radio, near- and mid-infrared, optical and X-ray data has been considered for the analysis. In the optical, the WHAN diagnostic diagrams show that the three nuclear peaks are strong active galactic nuclei since the EW of $Hα$ is $>$\,6 Å\, and $\log$ [NII]$λ$6584/H$α$\, ratio is $>$\,-0.4. Optical variability of both the continuum flux and intensity of the narrow emission lines is detected in a time-span of 13 years. The size of the narrow…
Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 are two close, bright and well-studied high-synchrotron-peaked blazars, which feature bright and persistent GeV and TeV emission. We use the longest and densest dataset of unbiased observations of these two sources, obtained at TeV and GeV energies during five years with FACT and Fermi-LAT. To characterize the variability and derive constraints on the emission mechanism, we augment the dataset with contemporaneous multi-wavelength observations from radio to X-rays. We correlate the light curves, identify individual flares in TeV energies and X-rays, and look for inter-band …
The BL Lac object Mrk 421 was observed in optical bands from 2009 April to 2012 May with the 1.0 m telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University. Microvariability was analysed by C and F tests, but no significant microvariability was detected during our observations.
Mrk 421 is a high-synchrotron-peaked blazar featuring bright and persistent GeV and TeV emission. We use the longest and densest ongoing unbiased observing campaign obtained at TeV and GeV energies during 5.5 years with the FACT telescope and the Fermi-LAT detector. The contemporaneous multi-wavelength observations were used to characterize the variability of the source and to constrain the underlying physical mechanisms. We study and correlate light curves obtained by nine different instruments from radio to gamma rays and found two significant results. The TeV and X-ray light curves are very…
Blazars are highly variable and display complex characteristics. A key characteristic is the flux probability distribution function or flux PDF whose shape depends upon the form of the underlying physical process driving variability. The BL Lacertae Mrk 421 is one of the brightest and most variable blazars across the electromagnetic spectrum. It has been reported to show hints of lognormality across the spectrum from radio to gamma-ray histograms of observed fluxes. This would imply that the underlying mechanisms may not conform to the "standard" additive, multi-zone picture, but could potenti…
HESS J1943+213 is an unidentified TeV source that is likely a high-frequency-peaked BL Lac (HBL) object but also compatible with a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) nature. Each of these enormously different astronomical interpretations is supported by some of the observed unusual characteristics. In order to finally classify and understand this object we took a three-pronged approach, through time-domain, high angular resolution, and multi-frequency radio studies. First, our deep time-domain observations with the Arecibo telescope failed to uncover the putative pulsar powering the proposed PWN. We con…
We report the discovery of a bright, compact ultraviolet source at a projected separation of 1.1~kpc from the known active galactic nucleus (AGN) in Mrk~766 based on Astrosat/UVIT observations. We perform radial profile analysis and derive the UV flux almost free from the nearby contaminating sources. The new source is about 2.5 and 5.6 times fainter than the AGN in the far and near UV bands. The two sources appear as a pair of nuclei in Mrk~766. We investigate the nature of the new source based on the UV flux ratio, X-ray and optical emission. The new source is highly unlikely to be another a…

The origin of the multiwavelength emission from the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac 1ES 1218+304 is studied using the data from {\it Swift UVOT/XRT}, {\it NuSTAR} and {\it Fermi-LAT}. A detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the data observed during 2008-2020 in the $γ$-ray ($>100$ MeV), X-ray (0.3-70 keV), and optical/UV bands is performed. The $γ$-ray spectrum is hard with a photon index of $1.71\pm0.02$ above $100$ MeV. The {\it Swift UVOT/XRT} data show a flux increase in the UV/optical and X-ray bands; the highest $0.3-3$ keV X-ray flux was $(1.13\pm0.02)\times10^{-10}{\rm erg\:cm^{-2}…
We present the results of nine years of the blazar observing programme at the RATAN-600 radio telescope (2005-2014). The data were obtained at six frequency bands (1.1, 2.3, 4.8, 7.7, 11.2, 21.7 GHz) for 290 blazars, mostly BL Lacs. In addition, we used data at 37 GHz obtained quasi-simultaneously with the Metsahovi radio observatory for some sources. The sample includes blazars of three types: high-synchrotron peaked (HSP), low-synchrotron peaked (LSP), and intermediate-synchrotron peaked (ISP). We present several epochs of flux density measurements, simultaneous radio spectra, spectral indic…
(Abridged) Soft and hard X-ray excesses, compared to the continuum power-law shape between ~2-10 keV, are common features observed in the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and are associated with the accretion disc-corona system around the supermassive black hole. However, the dominant process at work is still highly debated and has been proposed to be either relativistic reflection or Comptonisation. We aim to characterise the main X-ray spectral physical components from the bright bare Broad Line Seyfert 1 AGN Mrk 110, and the physical process(es) at work in its disc-corona system view…
High-resolution millimeter wave very-long-baseline interferometry (mm-VLBI) is an ideal tool for probing the structure at the base of extragalactic jets in detail. The TeV blazar Mrk 501 is one of the best targets among BL Lac objects for studying the nature of off-axis jet structures because it shows different jet position angles at different scales. The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of the off-axis jet structure through high-resolution mm-VLBI images at the jet base and physical parameters such as kinematics, flux densities, and spectral indices. We performed Very Long B…
We report the radio continuum properties for several samples of peaked spectrum (PS) radio sources. Broadband spectra of the objects were analysed using the RATAN-600 six-frequency (1.2-22 GHz) observations and available literature data, obtained on a time scale of 20-30 years. We discuss statistical differences in radio properties for several AGN types with peaked spectra and focus on PS quasars at high redshifts ($z > 3$). We confirm that a relatively small fraction (1-2%) of bright PS sources can be considered as genuine GPSs when they have been monitored densely and for a long time. The co…
We simulated the $R$-band contribution of the host galaxy of TeV $γ$-ray BL Lac object Mrk 501 in different aperture sizes and seeing conditions . The intensive observations were run with the 1.02 m optical telescope at Yunnan Observatories from 2010 May 15 to 18. Based on the host subtraction data presented in Nilsson et al. (2007), the subtraction of host galaxy contamination results in significant seeing-brightness correlations. These correlations would lead to illusive large amplitude variations at short timescales, which will mask the intrinsic micro variability, thus gives rise to diffic…
We study the synchrotron component of the spectral energy distribution (SED) on the sample of 877 blazars using the ASDC SED Builder Tool with available broadband data from the literature. Our sample includes 423 flat-spectrum radio sources (FSRQs), 361 BL Lac objects and candidates, and 93 blazars of uncertain type. We have made an estimation of the synchrotron peak frequency ($ν_{peak}^{s}$) for the 875 objects and further classified them as high, intermediate and low synchrotron peaked sources (HSPs/ISPs/LSPs). There are 42 HSPs with $ν_{peak}^{s} > 10^{16.5}$ Hz, 222 ISPs with $10^{14.5} <…
We have measured multi-band optical flux and colour variations for a sample of 12 low energy peaked blazars on short, day-to-month, timescales. Our sample contains six BL Lacertae objects and six flat spectrum radio quasars. These photometric observations, made during September 2008 to June 2009, used five optical telescopes, one in India and four in Bulgaria. We detected short term flux variations in eleven of these blazars and colour variability in eight of them. Our data indicate that six blazars (3C 66A, AO 0235+164, S5 0716+714, PKS 0735+178, OJ 287 and 3C 454.3) were observed in pre- or …
Using data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer we studied the mid infrared 3.4 $μ$m (W1-band) and 4.6 $μ$m (W2-band) flux variability of $γ$-ray emitting blazars. Our sample consists of 460 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 575 BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects. On intra-day timescales, the median amplitude of variability ($σ_{m}$) for FSRQs is 0.04$^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$ mag and 0.05$^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$ mag in W1 and W2 bands. For BL Lacs we found median $σ_{m}$ in W1(W2) bands of 0.04$^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$ (0.04$^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$) mag. On long timescales, for FSRQs we found a median $σ_{m}$ o…
