Analytical solutions with effective CPT-violating spin--gravity corrections to the neutron's gravitational bound states are obtained. The helicity-dependent phase evolution due to $\vecσ\cdot\vec{\tilde{b}}$ and $\vecσ\cdot\hat{\vec{p}}$ couplings not only leads to spin precession, %shown by the tip of the spin on the Bloch sphere, but also to transition-frequency shifts between different gravitational bound states. Utilizing transition frequencies measured in the qBounce experiment,\cite{GRS} we obtain the rough bound $|\vec{\tilde{b}}|<6.9\times10^{-21}$GeV. Incorporating known systematic errors may lead to more robust and tighter constraints.
We study the Lorentz and CPT violating effects on the branching ratio BR, the CPT violating asymmetry A_{CPT} and the ratio of the decay width, including only the Lorentz violating effects, to the one obtained in the standard model, for the flavor dependent part of the lepton flavor conserving Z\to l^+ l^- (l=e,μ,τ) decay. The inclusion of the Lorentz and CPT violating effects to the standard model contribution is too small to be detected, since the corresponding coefficients are highly suppressed at the low energy scale.
A brief summary is given of recent developments concerning a Lorentz-violating extension of the standard model and its implications for experiments testing Lorentz and CPT symmetry.
We consider low-energy CPT-violating modifications in charged current weak interactions and analyze possible ramifications in muon and antimuon decays. We calculate the lifetime of muon and antimuon with these modifications, and from the result, put bounds on the CPT-violating parameters. Moreover, we elaborate on the muon and antimuon decay rate differentials in electron energy and spatial angle, which entail interesting phenomenological consequences presenting new ways to constrain CPT violation in charged lepton decays.
We study the Lorentz and CPT violating effects on the branching ratio and the CP violating asymmetry of the lepton flavor violating interactions μ\to eγand τ\to μγ, in the model III version of the two Higgs doublet model. Here we consider that the Lorentz and CPT violating effects exist in the QED part of the interactions and enter into expressions in the lepton propagators and in the lepton-photon vertex. We observe that there exists a non-zero CP asymmetry. However, the Lorentz and CPT violating effects on the braching ratio and the CP asymmetry are negligibly small.
We study the decay widths of the processes H^+\to W^+ H^0 (h^0,A^0), including the Lorentz violating effects and analyze the possible CPT violating asymmetry arising from CPT odd coefficients. We observe that these effects are too small to be detected, since the corresponding coefficients are highly suppressed at the low energy scale.
The general features of renormalization and the renormalization group in QED and in general quantum field theories in curved spacetime with additional Lorentz- and CPT-violating background fields are reviewed.
We present a general model-independent formalism of measuring CP and CPT violating parameters through time-ordered integrated rates of correlated decays of $C=\pm 1$ entangled states of neutral pseudoscalar mesons. We give the general formulae of CP and CPT violating parameters in terms of four measurable asymmetries defined for the time-ordered integrated rates, applicable to all kinds of decay product. Two special cases which are often realized in experiments are discussed specifically.
The combination Charge Conjugation-Parity-Time Reversal(CPT) is a fundamental symmetry in our current understanding of nature. As such, testing CPT violation is a strongly motivated path to explore new physics. In this paper we study CPT violation in the neutrino sector, giving for the first time a bound, for a fundamental particle, in the CPT violating particle-antiparticle gravitational mass difference. We argue that cosmology is nowadays the only data sensitive to CPT violation for the neutrino-antineutrino mass splitting and we use the latest data release from Planck combined with the curr…
Considering that the existing experimental limit for $CPT$ violation is still poor, we explore various possible ways to test $CPT$ symmetry in $CP$-violating $B$ decays at $e^{+}e^{-}$ $B$ factories. We find that it is difficult to distinguish between the effect of direct $CP$ violation and that of $CPT$ violation in the time-integrated measurements of neutral $B$ decays to $CP$ eigenstates such as $ψK_{S}$ and $π^{+}π^{-}$. Instead, a cleaner signal of small $CPT$ violation may appear in the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetries for a few non-$CP$-eigenstate channels, e.g., $B^{0}_{d}/\bar{B}^{0}_…
We review the status of CPT violation in the neutrino sector. Apart from LSND, current data favors three flavors of light stable neutrinos and antineutrinos, with both halves of the spectrum having one smaller mass splitting and one larger mass splitting. Oscillation data for the smaller splitting is consistent with CPT. For the larger splitting, current data favor an antineutrino mass-squared splitting that is an order of magnitude larger than the corresponding neutrino splitting, with the corresponding mixing angle less-than-maximal. This CPT-violating spectrum is driven by recent results fr…
We show a simple mechanism for a dynamical CPT violation in the neutron sector. In particular, we show a {\it CPT-violating see-saw mechanism}, generating a Majorana mass and a CPT violating mass for the neutron. CPT-violating see-saw involves a sterile partner of the neutron, living in a hidden sector, in which CPT is spontaneously broken. In particular, neutrons (antineutrons) can communicate with the hidden sector through non-perturbative quantum gravity effects called {\it exotic instantons}. Exotic instantons dynamically break R-parity, generating one effective vertex between the neutron …
Considering that the existing experimental limit for $CPT$ violation is still poor, we explore various possible ways to test $CPT$ symmetry in $CP$-violating $B$ decays at $e^{+}e^{-}$ $B$ factories and hadron machines. We find that it is difficult to distinguish between the effect of direct $CP$ violation and that of $CPT$ violation in the time-integrated measurements of neutral $B$ decays to $CP$ eigenstates such as $ψK_{S}$ and $π^{+}π^{-}$. Instead, a cleaner signal of small $CPT$ violation may appear in the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetries for a few non-$CP$-eigenstate channels, e.g., $B^…
We present a general model-independent and rephase-invariant formalism that cleanly relates CP and CPT noninvariant observables to the fundamental parameters. Different types of CP and CPT violations in the K^0-, B^0-, B_s^0- and D^0-systems are explicitly defined. Their importance for interpreting experimental measurements of CP and CPT violations is emphasized. In particular, we show that the time-dependent measurements allow one to extract a clean signature of CPT violation.
We study the Lorentz and CPT violating effects on the ratio \frac{BR_{LorVio}}{BR_{SM}}, where BR_{LorVio} (BR_{SM}) is the branching ratios coming from the Lorentz violating effects (the SM), for the decays H^0\to f^+ f^- (f= quarks and charged leptons) and H^0\to ZZ (W^+ W^-). We observe that these new effects are too small to be detected, especially for f^+ f^- output, since the corresponding coefficients are highly suppressed at the low energy scale.
CPT-Violating photons are well-known to have problems with energy positivity in certain cases and therefore have not been convincingly quantized to date. We find that by adding a small mass term, consistent with experimental bounds, the theory can be regulated and allows for a consistent covariant quantization procedure. This new framework is applied to a consistent quantum calculation of vacuum Cherenkov radiation rates. These rates turn out to be largely independent of the mass of the photon regulator used. In the physical regime, accessible by ultra high energy cosmic rays, the behavior of …
We propose a simple phenomenological model predicting, through Lorentz symmetry breaking, a CPT-violating asymmetry between particle and antiparticle states in neutrino oscillations involving sterile neutrinos. Such a model is able to explain the apparently observed anomalous excess of low-energy ν_e-like events, reported by the MiniBooNE collaboration, as well as the non-observation of the corresponding anomalous excess of \ovν_e-like events. The present model leads to very specific physical predictions in the neutrino oscillations scenario, and account for the observed anomalies in terms of …
A theoretical study of possible signals for CPT and Lorentz violation arising in hydrogen and antihydrogen spectroscopy is described. The analysis uses a CPT- and Lorentz-violating extension of quantum electrodynamics, obtained from a general Lorentz-violating extension of the minimal standard model with both CPT-even and CPT-odd terms. Certain 1S-2S transitions and hyperfine Zeeman lines exhibit effects at leading order in small CPT-violating couplings.
A model for spontaneous symmetry breaking using a specific form of the bumblebee model is analyzed in the context of a Schwarzschild background metric. The resulting back reaction of the symmetry-breaking field on the metric is computed to second order. Consistency with conventional (pseudo)Riemannian geometry is demonstrated. This background field is coupled to fermions via a spin-dependent CPT-violating coupling term of a type commonly considered in the Standard-Model Extension. The perturbations of various orbital trajectories are discussed. Specifically, a spin-dependent orbital velocity i…
CPT violation in the neutrino sector, suggested as a new way to reconcile different neutrino anomalies, induces at the radiative level observable effects among charged leptons, where high-precision tests of the CPT symmetry are available. We show that, in the models with heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos, constraints imposed by these experiments require CPT violation in neutrino spectrum be suppressed to a level undetectable for any conceivable neutrino experiment. We find that the CPT violation in the neutrino sector may evade indirect constraints only at the expense of light right-handed…
We study the status of the CPT violating neutrino mass spectrum which has been proposed to simultaneously accommodate the oscillation data from LSND, KamLAND, atmospheric and solar neutrino experiments, as well as the non-observation of anti-neutrino disappearance in short-baseline reactor experiments. We perform a three-generation analysis of the global data with the aim of elucidating the viability of this solution. We find no compatibility between the results of the oscillation analysis of LSND and all-but-LSND data sets below 3$σ$ CL. Furthermore, the global data without LSND show no evide…
The radiatively induced Lorentz and CPT violating Chern-Simons terms in QED is calculated based on the recently developed loop regularization method [Y.L. Wu, Int.J.Mod.Phys.A18 (2003) 5363, hep-th/0209021; Y.L. Wu, Mod.Phys.Lett.A19 (2004) 2191, hep-th/0311082] for quantum field theories. It enables us to make general comments on the various results in literature and obtain a consistent result when simultaneously combining the evaluation for the chiral anomaly which has a unique form once the vector current is kept conserved.
We show that a hierarchical CPT violating neutrino spectrum can simultaneously accommodate all published neutrino data, including the LSND result, with a total chi^2 which is almost identical to the CPT conserving best fit. In our scenario the oscillation signal seen by the KamLAND experiment in antineutrinos is independent of the LMA solar oscillation signal seen in neutrinos. A larger antineutrino mass splitting accounts for the LSND signal and also contributes to atmospheric oscillations. Because of this feature, there is some tension between our model and certain Super-K atmospheric result…
Assuming that CPT is violated in the neutrino sector seems to be a viable alternative to sterile neutrinos when it comes to reconciling the LSND anomaly with the remainder of the neutrino data. There are different (distinguishable) ways of incorporating CPT violation into the standard model, including postulating m different from \bar{m}. Here, I investigate the possibility of introducing CPT violation via Lorentz-invariance violating effective operators (``Ether'' potentials) which modify neutrino oscillation patterns like ordinary matter effects. I argue that, within a simplified two-flavor …
In this talk, I discuss possible bounds on the Lorentz and CPT violating parameters in the Higgs sector of the so called minimal standard model extension. The main motivation to this study is coming from the fact that unlike the parameters in the fermion and gauge sector, there are no published bounds on the parameters in the Higgs sector. From the one-loop contributions to the photon propagator the bounds on the CPT-even asymmetric coefficients are obtained and the c_μνcoefficients in the fermion sector determine the bound on the CPT-even symmetric coefficients. The CPT-odd coefficient is bou…
The formulation and some experimental implications of a general Lorentz-violating extension of the standard model are reviewed. The theory incorporates both CPT-preserving and CPT-breaking terms. It is otherwise a conventional quantum field theory, obtained under the assumption that Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken in an underlying model. The theory contains the usual standard-model gauge structure, and it is power-counting renormalizable. Energy and momentum are conserved. Despite the violation of Lorentz symmetry, the theory exhibits covariance under Lorentz transformations of the ob…
Recently we proposed a framework for explaining the observed evidence for neutrino oscillations without enlarging the neutrino sector, by introducing CPT violating Dirac masses for the neutrinos. In this paper we continue the exploration of the phenomenology of CPT violation in the neutrino sector. We show that our CPT violating model fits the existing SuperKamiokande data at least as well as the standard atmospheric neutrino oscillation models. We discuss the challenge of measuring CP violation in a neutrino sector that also violates CPT. We point out that the proposed off-axis extension of M…
A general technique is presented for treating CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations. The effective field theory for a complex scalar with CPT-violating operators of arbitrary mass dimension is incorporated in the formalism for the propagation and mixing of neutral mesons. Observable effects are discussed, and first measurements of CPT-violating operators of dimension five are extracted from existing experimental results.
A modified Dirac equation with general Lorentz- and CPT-violating operators in the electromagnetic field is studied. Constraints on and possible sensitivities to Lorentz-violating coefficients in the nonminimal sector up to mass-dimension six can be obtained by analyzing Penning-trap results involving anomaly frequencies.
We examine matter induced CPT violation effects in long baseline electron neutrino appearance experiments in a low energy neutrino factory setup. Assuming CPT invariance in vacuum, the magnitude of CPT violating asymmetry in matter has been estimated using the exact expressions for the transition probabilities. The dependence of the asymmetry on the oscillation parameters like mixing angles, mass squared differences as well as on the Dirac CP violating phase has been investigated.
We study indirect CPT violating effects in B_d meson decays and mixing, taking into account the recent constraints on the CPT violating parameters from the Belle collaboration. The life time difference of the B_d meson mass eigenstates, expected to be negligible in the standard model and many of its CPT conserving extensions, could be sizeable (\sim a few percent of the total width) due to breakdown of this fundamental symmetry. The time evolution of the direct CP violating asymmetries in one amplitude dominated processes (inclusive semileptonic B_d decays, in particular) turn out to be partic…
A general theoretical framework that incorporates possible CPT and Lorentz violation in an extension of the standard model and in quantum electrodynamics has been developed over the last decade. The framework originates in the idea that CPT and Lorentz symmetry could be broken spontaneously in a more fundamental theory such as string theory. These symmetry violations are described in the standard-model extension by small terms in the Lagrangian. Various experiments can bound these quantities. They include Penning-trap experiments with electrons and positrons, Penning-trap experiments with prot…
Recently observed anomalies in the $B_s \to J/ψϕ$ decay and the like-sign dimuon asymmetry $A^b_{sl}$ hint at possible new physics (NP) in the $\bsbsbar$ mixing. We parameterize the NP with four model-independent quantities: the magnitudes and phases of the dispersive part $M_{12}$ and the absorptive part $Γ_{12}$ of the NP contribution to the effective Hamiltonian. We constrain these parameters using the four observables $ΔM_s$, $ΔΓ_s$, the mixing phase $β_s^{J/ψϕ}$, and $A^b_{sl}$. Our quantitative fit indicates that the NP should contribute a significant dispersive as well as absorptive par…
Entangled pseudoscalar neutral meson pairs have been used in studying CP violation and searching CPT violation, but almost all the previous works concern $C=-1$ entangled state. Here we consider $C=+1$ entangled state of pseudoscalar neutral mesons, which is quite different from $C=-1$ entangled state and provides complementary information on symmetry violating parameters. After developing a general formalism, we consider three kinds of decay processes, namely, semileptonic-semileptonic, hadronic-hadronic and semileptonic-hadronic processes. For each kind of processes, we calculate the integra…
Electric dipole moments of atoms can arise from P-odd and T-odd electron--nucleon couplings. This work studies a general class of dimension-six electron--nucleon interactions mediated by Lorentz-violating tensors of ranks ranging from $1$ to $4$. The possible couplings are listed as well as their behavior under C, P, and T, allowing us to select the couplings compatible with electric-dipole-moment physics. The unsuppressed contributions of these couplings to the atom's hamiltonian can be read as equivalent to an electric dipole moment. The Lorentz-violating coefficients' magnitudes are limited…
The prospects are explored for testing Lorentz- and CPT-violating quantum electrodynamics in experiments with Penning traps. We present the Lagrange density of Lorentz-violating spinor electrodynamics with operators of mass dimensions up to six, and we discuss some of its properties. The theory is used to derive Lorentz- and CPT-violating perturbative shifts of the energy levels of a particle confined to a Penning trap. Observable signals are discussed for trapped electrons, positrons, protons, and antiprotons. Existing experimental measurements on anomaly frequencies are used to extract new o…
Lorentz- and CPT-violating effects initiating two-body electromagnetic flavor-changing decays of charged leptons are studied in the framework of Lorentz-violating effective field theory. An analysis of data from experiments at the Paul Scherrer Institute and at the Stanford Linear Accelerator measuring the branching ratios of these decays provides 576 constraints on independent flavor-changing effects in the charged-lepton sector, consistent with no Lorentz and CPT violation at the level of parts in $10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ to $10^{-9}$ GeV$^{-1}$.
We extend Lorentz-violating Supersymmetry models to include vector superfields. The CPT-preserving model generalizes easily, while the obvious attempt at generalizing the CPT-violating model meets serious obstructions. Generalizations of the CPT-preserving but Lorentz-Violating model to higher dimensions are also straightforward. Compactification is used to reduce the six-dimensional theory to an ${\cal{N}} =2$ Lorentz-violating theory in four dimensions, while the ten-dimensional theory is used to produce an ${\cal{N}}=4$ Lorentz-violating theory. This may be useful in future constructions in…
We analyze the prospects for observing CPT violation using neutral-meson P0-P0bar systems. Before one can claim a measurement of CPT violation, one must be able to rule out the possibility that its result is due to simpler new-physics effects. In particular, one must be able to separate the CPT-violating quantities from parameters violating the Delta P = ΔQ rule of semileptonic decays, and from new-physics contributions to the production mechanism of the neutral mesons. One can isolate CPT violation using the semileptonic decays of single, tagged neutral mesons; unfortunately, this situation c…
We make an analysis of the fake CPT-violating asymmetries between the survival probabilities of neutrinos and antineutrinos, induced by the terrestrial matter effects, in three different scenarios of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments with L=730 km, L=2100 km and L=3200 km. In particular, the dependence of those asymmetries on the Dirac-type CP-violating phase of the lepton flavor mixing matrix is examined.
We explore possible signals of CPT violation in neutrinos in the complete three-flavor framework. Employing a systematic expansion in small parameters, we analytically estimate the CPT violating contributions to the survival probabilities of $ν_μ, \barν_μ, ν_e$ and $\barν_e$. The results indicate that, in spite of the large number of CPT violating parameters, only a small number of combinations are relevant for oscillation experiments. We identify the combinations that can be constrained at the long baseline experiments, and show that their contribution to the neutrino Hamiltonian can be bound…
We consider the process of photon decay in quantum electrodynamics with a CPT-violating Chern-Simons-like term added to the action. For a simplified model with only the quadratic Maxwell and Chern-Simons-like terms and the quartic Euler-Heisenberg term, we obtain a nonvanishing probability for the decay of a particular photon state into three others.
A search is presented for CPT-violating effects in the mixing of $B^0_s$ mesons using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The CPT-violating asymmetry in the decay $B^0_s \rightarrow μ^{\pm} D_s^{\mp} X$ as a function of sidereal phase is measured. No evidence for CPT-violating effects is observed and limits are placed on CPT- and Lorentz-invariance violating coupling coefficients.
In this work, the CPT-violating (CPTV) interactions on neutrons' gravitational bound state are studied. With simple analytical solutions, we provide a preliminary investigation on the Lorentz-violation (LV) induced spin precession due to the $\vecσ\cdot\vec{\tilde{b}}(1+gz)$ and $\bar{b}/m_{_I}\vecσ\cdot\hat{\vec{p}}$ couplings, where $\vec{\tilde{b}}$ and $\bar{b}$ represent LV coefficients. The helicity-dependent couplings can induce unusual phase evolutions with position and momentum dependence. As $\vec{\tilde{b}}$ varies with time due to the Earth's motion, the spin polarization also show…
In this work, we present CPT- and Lorentz-violating corrections to observable quantities in electron-proton scattering. We also show how the theoretical prediction can be used together with data to establish bounds on a coefficient for CPT and Lorentz violation in the QCD sector.
Decoherence has the potential to explain all existing neutrino data including LSND results, without enlarging the neutrino sector. This particular form of CPT violation can preserve the equality of masses and mixing angles between particle and antiparticle sectors, and still provide seizable differences in the oscillation patterns. A simplified minimal model of decoherence is sufficient to explain the existing neutrino data quite neatly, while making dramatic predictions for the upcoming experiments. Some comments on the order of the decoherence parameters in connection with theoretically expe…
The Lorentz invariant $CPT$ violation by using non-local interactions is naturally incorporated in the Higgs coupling to neutrinos in the Standard Model, without spoiling the basic $SU(2)_{L}\times U(1)$ gauge symmetry. The neutrino--antineutrino mass splitting is thus realized by the mechanism which was proposed recently, assuming the neutrino masses to be predominantly Dirac-type in the Standard Model.
Applications of the general theory of quantum electrodynamics with Lorentz- and CPT-violating operators of mass dimensions up to six are presented to Penning-trap experiments comparing charge-to-mass ratios between particles and antiparticles. Perturbation theory is used to derive Lorentz- and CPT-violating contributions to the energy levels and cyclotron frequencies of confined particles and antiparticles. We show that whether the experimental {\it interpreted} quantity $(|q|/m)_{\overline{w}}/(|q|/m)_{w} - 1$ is a clean measure of a CPT test depends on the context of the relevant theory. Exi…
The feasibility of placing bounds on CPT violation from experiments with neutral-$B$ mesons is examined. We consider situations with uncorrelated mesons and ones with either unboosted or boosted correlated mesons. Analytical expressions valid for small T- and CPT-violating parameters are presented for time-dependent and time-integrated decay rates, and various relevant asymmetries are derived. We use Monte-Carlo simulations to model experimental conditions for a plausible range of CPT-violating parameters. The treatment uses realistic data incorporating background effects, resolutions, and acc…
An overview of the theoretical framework of the Standard Model Extension (SME) that allows for a parametrization of Lorentz and CPT violating effects using effective field theory will be presented. A review of current bounds on these Lorentz violating parameters using various low-energy tests will be reviewed. State-of-the-art measurements involving the Penning Trap, atomic clock, torsion pendulum, and resonant cavities will be discussed. Different experiments can provide stringent bounds on a variety of parameters coupled to various fundamental particles including electrons, protons, neutrons…
A general Lorentz-violating extension of the standard model of particle physics, allowing for both CPT-even and CPT-odd effects, is described. Some of its theoretical aspects and experimental implications are summarized.
We examine the process of Compton scattering, in the presence of a Lorentz- and CPT-violating modification to the structure of the electron. We calculate the complete tree-level contribution to the cross section; our result is valid to all orders in the Lorentz-violating parameter. We find a cross section that differs qualitatively from the Klein-Nishina result at small frequencies, and we also encounter a previously undescribed complication that will arise in the calculation of many Lorentz-violation cross sections: The Lorentz violation breaks the spin degeneracy of the external states, so w…
We examine the effects on baryogenesis of spontaneous CPT violation in a string-based scenario. Under suitable circumstances, certain CPT-violating terms can produce a large baryon asymmetry at the grand-unified scale that reduces to the observed value via sphaleron or other dilution mechanisms.
Space-based experiments offer sensitivity to numerous unmeasured effects involving Lorentz and CPT violation. We provide a classification of clock sensitivities and present explicit expressions for time variations arising in such experiments from nonzero coefficients in the Lorentz- and CPT-violating Standard-Model Extension.
We study the sensitivity of an asymmetric B-factory to indirect CPT violating effects. We find that both dilepton signals and nonleptonic asymmetries can be used to bound the space of parameters describing possible CPT violation in the mixing matrix of the neutral B system.
In this paper we present a novel CPT symmetry test in the neutral kaon system based, for the first time, on the direct comparison of the probabilities of a transition and its CPT reverse. The required interchange of "in" $\leftrightarrow$ "out" states for a given process is obtained exploiting the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations of neutral kaon pairs produced at a $ϕ$-factory. The observable quantities have been constructed by selecting the two semileptonic decays for flavour tag, the $ππ$ and $3π^0$ decays for CP tag and the time orderings of the decay pairs. The interpretation in terms …
