This article extends the single-fluid relativistic irreversible thermodynamics theory of {\it M{ü}ller}, {\it Israel} and {\it Stewart} (hereafter the {MIS} theory) to a multi-fluid system with inherent species interactions. This is illustrated in a two-fluid toy-model where an effective complex 4-velocity plays the role of a primary dynamical parameter. We find that an observer who resides in the {\it real}-part of this universe will notice that their knowledge of the universe parametrized using {\it real}, rather than {\it imaginary}, quantities are insufficient to fully determine properties such as the total energy density, pressure or entropy, In fact, such an observer will deduce the existence of some negative energy that affects the expansion of their perceived {\it real} universe.
We analyze the interpretation of the spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions that admit a flat synchronization orthogonal to the fluid flow as a thermodynamic perfect fluid in local thermal equilibrium. The ideal gas sonic condition is examined for this family of metrics, and the macroscopic conditions for physical reality are accurately tested for some specific solutions.
In spite of a recent reply by Quevedo and Zárate (gr-qc/0403096), their assertion that their thermodynamic scheme for a perfect fluid binary mixture is incompatible with Szekeres and Stephani families of universes, except those of FRW ones, remains wrong.
Relativistic irreversible thermodynamics is reformulated following the conventional approach proposed by Meixner in the non-relativistic case. Clear separation between mechanical and non-mechanical energy fluxes is made. The resulting equations for the entropy production and the local internal energy have the same structure as the non-relativistic ones. Assuming linear constitutive laws, it is shown that consistency is obtained both with the laws of thermodynamics and causality.
The search for thermodynamic admissibility moreover reveals a fundamental difference between liquids and gases in relativistic fluid dynamics, as the reversible convection mechanism is much simpler for liquids than for gases. In relativistic fluid mechanics, positive entropy production is known to be insufficient for guaranteeing stability. Much more restrictive criteria for thermodynamic admissibility have become available in nonequilibrium thermodynamics. We here perform a linear stability analysis for a model of relativistic hydrodynamics that is based on the GENERIC (general equation for t…
We study the thermodynamics of the universe containing perfect fluid with equation of state $p=ωρ,ω$ is variable. Here we choose $ω$ to be a function of the red shift variable $z$ and four different choices of $ω$ has been investigated. Also the laws of thermodynamics are examined considering the universe bounded by the horizon (apparent) as a thermodynamical system.
Our aim is to investigate the thermodynamic properties of the universe bounded by the cosmological event horizon and dominated by the tachyon fluid. We give two different laws of evolution of our universe. Further, we show the first law and the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) are both satisfied in two cases, but their properties of the thermodynamic equilibrium are totally different. Besides, under our solutions, we find the validity of the laws of thermodynamics is irrelevant with the parameters of the tachyon fluid. Finally, we conclude that the universe bounded by the cosmol…
We show that the analysis presented in a recent comment by Coll and Ferrando \cite{comment} (qr-qc/0312058) is based on the erroneous assumption that the chemical potential and fractional concentration of a {\it mixture} of perfect fluids are unknown variables.
The Bogoliubov procedure in quantum field theory is used to describe a relativistic almost ideal Bose gas at zero temperature. Special attention is given to the study of a vortex. The radius of the vortex in the field description is compared to that obtained in the relativistic fluid approximation. The Kelvin waves are studied and, for long wavelengths, the dispersion relation is obtained by an asymptotic matching method and compared with the non relativistic result.
We write a first order symmetric hyperbolic system coupling the Riemann with the dynamical acceleration of a relativistic fluid. W determine the associated, coupled, Bel - Robinson energy, and the integral equality that it satisfies.
We analyze the compatibility between the geometrodynamics and thermodynamics of a binary mixture of perfect fluids which describe inhomogeneous cosmological models. We generalize the thermodynamic scheme of general relativity to include the chemical potential of the fluid mixture with non-vanishing entropy production. This formalism is then applied to the case of Szekeres and Stephani families of cosmological models. The compatibility conditions turn out to impose symmetry conditions on the cosmological models in such a way that only the limiting case of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model re…
This paper is devoted to investigate the thermodynamic stability of a generic cosmological fluid known as Van der Waals fluid in the context of flat FRW universe. It is treated as a perfect fluid that obeys the equation of state $P=\frac{γρ}{1-βρ}-αρ^{2}, 0\leqγ<1$, where $ρ$ stands for energy density and $P$ stands for pressure of the fluid. In this regard, we discuss the behavior of physical parameters to analyze the evolution of the universe. We investigate whether the cosmological scenario fulfills the third law of thermodynamics using specific heat formalism. Next we discuss the thermal e…
The present work deals with homogeneous and isotropic FLRW model of the Universe having a system of non-interacting diffusive cosmic fluids with barotropic equation of state (constant or variable equation of state parameter). Due to diffusive nature of the cosmic fluids, the divergence of the energy momentum tensor is chosen to be proportional to the diffusive current. The thermodynamic stability analysis of individual fluids is done and the stability conditions are expressed as restrictions on the equation of state parameter.
It is shown that inhomogeneous Szekeres and Stephani universes exist corresponding to non-dissipative binary mixtures of perfect fluids in local thermal equilibrium. This result contradicts a recent statement by Zárate and Quevedo (2004 Class. Quantum Grav. {\bf 21} 197, {\it Preprint} gr-qc/0310087), which affirms that the only Szekeres and Stephani universes compatible with these fluids are the homogeneous Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models. Thus, contrarily to their conclusion, their thermodynamic scheme do not gives new indications of incompatibility between thermodynamics and relativity. T…
A general thermodynamic treatment of dissipative relativistic fluids is introduced, where the temperature four vector is not parallel to the velocity field of the fluid. Generic stability and kinetic equilibrium points out a particular thermodynamics, where the temperature vector is parallel to the enthalpy flow vector and the choice of the flow fixes the constitutive functions for viscous stress and heat. The linear stability of the homogeneous equilibrium is proved in a mixed particle-energy flow-frame.
Thermodynamics unavoidably contains fluctuation theory, expressible in terms of a unique thermodynamic information metric. This metric produces an invariant thermodynamic Riemannian curvature scalar $R$ which, in fluid and spin systems, measures interatomic interactions. Specifically, $|R|$ measures the size of organized fluctuating microscopic structures, and the sign of $R$ indicates whether the interactions are effectively attractive or repulsive. $R$ has also been calculated for black hole thermodynamics for which there is no consensus about any underlying microscopic structures. It is hop…
In the so-called unified dark fluid models, the dark sector gets simplified because dark matter and dark energy are replaced by a single fluid that behaves as the former at early times and as the latter at late times. In this short paper we analyze this class of models from the thermodynamic viewpoint. While the second law of thermodynamics is satisfied, the first two derivatives of the entropies of the apparent horizon and of the energy components suffer such a sharp oscillation that doubts are raised about the soundness of this class of models.
A method to describe exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations in terms of relativistic thin disks constituted by two perfect charged fluids is presented. Describing the surface of the disk as a single charged fluid we find explicit expressions for the rest energies, the pressures and the electric charge densities of the two fluids. An explicit example is given. The particular case of the thin disks composed by two charged perfect fluids with barotropic equation of state is also presented.
We introduce a natural notion of incompressibility for fluids governed by the relativistic Euler equations on a fixed background spacetime, and show that the resulting equations reduce to the incompressible Euler equations in the classical limit as $c\rightarrow \infty$. As our main result, we prove that the fluid pressure of solutions of these incompressible "relativistic" Euler equations satisfies an elliptic equation on each of the hypersurfaces orthogonal to the fluid four-velocity, which indicates infinite speed of propagation.
We introduce a class of relativistic fluid states satisfying the relativistic local thermodynamical equilibrium postulate (abbreviated as relativistic (LTE) postulate). States satisfying this postulate, are states "near equilibrium" (a term defined precisely in the course of the paper) and permit us to attach a fictitious "local thermodynamical equilibrium" state that fits event by event the actual fluid state. They single out an admissible class of rest frames relative to which thermodynamical variables like the energy density, thermodynamical pressure, stresses, particle number density (or d…
By a weak deformation of the cylindrical symmetry of the potential vortex in a relativistic perfect isentropic fluid, we study the possible dynamics of the central line of this vortex. In "stiff" material the Nanbu-Goto equations are obtained
New rotation laws have been recently found for general-relativistic self-gravitating stationary fluids. It was not clear whether they apply to systems rotating with a constant linear velocity. In this paper we fill this gap. The answer is positive. That means, in particular, that these systems should exhibit the recently discovered general-relativistic weak-field effects within rotating tori: the dynamic anti-dragging and the deviation from the Keplerian motion induced by the fluid selfgravity.
This article presents the study of a multi-species fluid characterised by a freeze-out or break-away of one or more species. Whereas single-fluid approximation suffices for modelling of the pre {\it freeze-out} period, multi-fluid approximation is required for the post freeze-out period. Embedded in this is a transition period where neither one of the two approximations is singly appropriate. We examine the thermodynamics of this fluid and find that the second law holds before, during and after the freeze-out. Our application to cosmological modelling involving interacting dark-section species…
The dynamics of the fluid fields in a large class of causal dissipative fluid theories is studied. It is shown that the physical fluid states in these theories must relax (on a time scale that is characteristic of the microscopic particle interactions) to ones that are essentially indistinguishable from the simple relativistic Navier-Stokes descriptions of these states. Thus, for example, in the relaxed form of a physical fluid state the stress energy tensor is in effect indistinguishable from a perfect fluid stress tensor plus small dissipative corrections proportional to the shear of the flu…
We give a variational formulation of perfect fluids on a general pseudoriemannian manifold by variating tangent fields according the flux produced by them. In this approach no constraints are needed. As a result, Euler and continuity equations are obtained quite directly.
Thermodynamics on the cosmological apparent horizon of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric has been investigated with Bekenstein entropy and Hawking temperature on the horizon, and Unruh temperature for the fluid inside the horizon. This temperature is experienced by a radial comoving observer infinitesimally close to the horizon due to the pressure exerted by the fluid bounded by the horizon. An expression for the entropy of the fluid has been obtained which is found to be proportional to the volume of the thermodynamic system which implies that the Unruh temperature of the flui…
We present a simple, analytic and straightforward method to elucidate the effects produced by polytropic fluids on any other gravitational source, no matter its nature, for static and spherically symmetric spacetimes. As a direct application, we study the interaction between polytropes and perfect fluids coexisting inside a self-gravitating stellar object
"Acoustic spacetimes", in which techniques of differential geometry are used to investigate sound propagation in moving fluids, have attracted considerable attention over the last few decades. Most of the models currently considered in the literature are based on non-relativistic barotropic irrotational fluids, defined in a flat Newtonian background. The extension, first to special relativistic barotropic fluid flow, and then to general relativistic barotropic fluid flow in an arbitrary background, is less straightforward than it might at first appear. In this article we provide a pedagogical …
We have extended the Vaidya radiating metric to include both a radiation fluid and a string fluid. This paper expands our brief introduction to extensions of the Schwarzschild vacuum which appeared in 1998 Phys. Rev. D Vol 57, R5945. Assuming diffusive transport for the string fluid, we find new analytic solutions of Einstein's field equations.
We investigate the emergent universe scenario in the presence of interacting fluids. The non-linear equation of state (EoS) considered in the general theory of relativity for obtaining emergent universe is effectively a cosmological model with a composition of three fluids. In this paper we consider two models to realize viable cosmological scenarios, {\it viz.}, (i) a two-fluid model with interaction of a pressureless fluid with the fluid having the non-linear EoS needed for the emergent universe, and (ii) a three-fluid model with interaction among the three fluids which originate from the Eo…
We consider relativistic fluid flow under Chern-Simons modified Maxwell theory and under Chern-Simons modified gravity theory. We take account of the effects of Chern-Simons corrections on the quantities of fluid flow that are conserved without the Chern-Simons corrections. We find that the conservations of several quantities are generally broken by the Chern-Simons corrections.
We present a new code for solving the coupled Einstein-hydrodynamics equations to evolve relativistic, self-gravitating fluids. The Einstein field equations are solved on one grid using pseudospectral methods, while the fluids are evolved on another grid by finite differencing. We discuss implementation details, such as the communication between the grids and the treatment of stellar surfaces, and present code tests.
The balance equations of energy-momentum and spin together with Einstein's field equations are investigated by the Liu procedure to find constraints for the constitutive equations in such a way that the Second Law is satisfied. Special cases such as spinless systems and curvature insensitive materials are shortly discussed.
We demonstrate that the thermodynamics of a perfect fluid describing baryonic matter can, in certain limits, lead to an equation of state similar to that of dark energy. We keep the cosmic fluid equation of state quite general by just demanding that the speed of sound is positive and less than the speed of light. In this framework, we discuss some propositions by looking at the asymptotic behavior of the cosmic fluid.
Based on Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter(RN-AdS) black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter, we study the thermodynamics and phase transition by extending the phase space defined by the charge square $Q^{2}$ and the conjugate quantity $ψ$, where $ψ$ is a function of horizon radius. The first law of thermodynamics and the equation of state are derived in the form $Q^{2}=Q^{2}(T,ψ)$. By investigating the critical behaviour of perfect fluid dark matter around Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black hole, we find that these thermodynamics system are similar to Van der Waals system, and c…
According to standard thermophysical theories, cross effects are mostly present in multicomponent systems. In this paper we show that for relativistic fluids an electric field generates a heat flux even in the single component case. In the non-relativistic limit the effect vanishes and Fourier's law is recovered. This result is novel and may have applications in the transport properties of very hot plasmas.
Two general-relativistic hydrodynamical models are considered: a model of self-gravitating static configurations of perfect fluid and a model of steady accretion of fluid onto a black hole. We generalise analytic results obtained for the original polytropic versions of these models onto a wider class of barotropic equations of state. The knowledge about the polytropic solutions is used to establish bounds on certain characteristic quantities appearing in both cases.
The Euler equations governing a relativistic perfect fluid are put into symmetric hyperbolic form with dependent variables the fluid's specific entropy plus a generalized velocity vector equal to the fluid's unit relativistic velocity vector divided pointwise by the fluid's specific enthalpy.
We provide a proof of the necessary and sufficient condition on the profile of the temperature, chemical potential, and angular velocity for a charged perfect fluid in dynamic equilibrium to be in thermodynamic equilibrium not only in fixed but also in dynamical electromagnetic and gravitational fields. In passing, we also present the corresponding expression for the first law of thermodynamics for such a charged star.
We discuss two different approaches to synthesise holographic non-relativistic fluid from its relativistic counterpart. In the first approach we obtain the non-relativistic fluid by light-cone reduction of a relativistic conformal fluid. In the second approach we consider the bulk dual of the relativistic fluid, uplift the solution to 10 dimensions and perform TsT transformations on the bulk solution to change the asymptotic structure. Reducing the TsT transformed geometry over $S^5$ we find an effective 5 dimensional locally boosted solution. We then use the bulk-boundary dictionary to comput…
In this paper we simulate a two dimensional relativistic ideal gas by implementing a relativistic elastic binary collision algorithm. We show that the relativistic gas faithfully obeys Jüttner's speed distribution function. Furthermore, using this numeric simulation in conjunction with the energy equipartition theorem for a relativistic gas, we conclude that a moving system appears cooler.
According to maximum entropy principle, it has been proved that the gravitational field equations could be derived by the extrema of total entropy for perfect fluid, which implies that thermodynamic relations contain information of gravity. In this manuscript, we obtain a criterion for thermodynamical stability of an adiabatic, self-gravitating perfect fluid system by the second variation of total entropy. We show, for Einstein's gravity with spherical symmetry spacetime, that the criterion is consistent with that for dynamical stability derived by Chandrasekhar and Wald. We also find that the…
The linear stability of the homogeneous equilibrium of non-relativistic fluids with mass flux and special relativistic fluids with the absolute value of the energy vector as internal energy is investigated. It is proved that the equilibrium is asymptotically stable in both cases due to purely thermodynamic restrictions; the only requirements are the thermodynamic stability and the nonnegativity of the transport coefficients.
It is well known that, in the absence of external forces, simple non-relativistic fluids involve entropy production only through heat conduction and shear viscosity. In this work, it is shown that a number density gradient contributes to the local entropy production of a simple relativistic fluid using special relativistic kinetic theory. Also, the presence of an external field may cause strictly relativistic contributions to the entropy production, a fact not widely recognized. The implications of these effects are thoroughly discussed.
In this paper we have investigated the limits imposed by thermodynamics on a dark energy fluid. We have obtained the heat capacities and the compressibilities for a dark energy fluid. The thermal and mechanical stabilities require these quantities to be positive. We have shown that dark energy fluids must satisfy the stability conditions and that such requirement put difficulties in the cosmic fluid models with negative constant EoS parameters. We have also shown that the observational constraints imposed by SN Ia, BAO and $H(z)$ data on a general dark energy fluid with a time-dependent EoS pa…
It has been shown three different views in relativistic thermodynamics can be derived from the basic formulation proposed by van Kampen and Israel. The way to decompose energy-momentum into the reversible and irreversible parts is not uniquely determined, and different choices result in different views. The effect of difference in the definition of a finite volume is also considered.
The present work deals with three alternative generalized Bekenstein-Hawking formulation of thermodynamical parameters namely entropy and temperature for the universal thermodynamical system bounded by a horizon in the frame work of inhomogeneous perfect fluid Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model of the Universe. For the first choice, the first law of thermodynamics holds only for the trivial de Sitter case of the LTB model while we need restriction on the evolution of the horizon radius for the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics. However, for the other two choices, the firs…
We emphasize that the pressure related work appearing in a general relativistic first law of thermodynamics should involve {\em proper volume element} rather than coordinate volume element. This point is highlighted by considering both local energy momentum conservation equation as well as particle number conservation equation. It is also emphasized that we are considering here a {\em non-singular} fluid governed by purely classical general relativity. Therefore, we are not considering here any semi-classical or quantum gravity which apparently suggests thermodynamical properties even for a (s…
In this paper we highlight the fact that the physical content of hyperbolic theories of relativistic dissipative fluids is, in general, much broader than that of the parabolic ones. This is substantiated by presenting an ample range of dissipative fluids whose behavior noticeably departs from Navier-Stokes'.
We revisit the analogy between a minimally coupled scalar field in general relativity and a perfect fluid, correcting previous identifications of effective temperature and chemical potential. This provides a useful complementary picture for the first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity, paving the way for the Einstein frame formulation (which eluded previous attempts) and raises interesting questions to further develop the analogy.
We reveal unifying thermodynamic aspects of so different phenomena as the cosmological electron-positron annihilation, the evaporation of primordial black holes with a narrow mass range, and the ``deflationary'' transition from an initial de Sitter phase to a subsequent standard Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker begin (FLRW) behavior.
It is shown that an effective anisotropic spherically symmetric fluid model with heat flow can absorb the addition to a perfect fluid of pressure anisotropy, heat flow, bulk and shear viscosity, electric field and null fluid. In most cases the induction of effective heat flow can be avoided.
We describe general-relativistically a spherically symmetric stationary fluid accretion onto a black hole. Relativistic effects enhance mass accretion, in comparison to the Bondi model predictions, in the case when backreaction is neglected. That enhancement depends on the adiabatic index and the asymptotic gas temperature and it can magnify accretion by one order in the ultrarelativistic regime.
A relativistic fluid ball with an inhomogeneous static stratified matter configuration is considered. A model of an astrophysical object with this structure of matter is constructed.
In this article, we assume that a cold charged perfect fluid is constructing a spherical relativistic star. Our purpose is the investigation of the dynamical properties of its exterior geometry, through simulating the geodesic motion of a charged test particle, while moving on the star.
The main concepts of general relativistic thermodynamics and general relativistic statistical mechanics are reviewed. The main building block of the proper relativistic extension of the classical thermodynamics laws is the four-temperature vector β, which plays a major role in the quantum framework and defines a very convenient hydrodynamic frame. The general relativistic thermodynamic equilibrium condition demands βto be a Killing vector field. We show that a remarkable consequence is that all Lie derivatives of all physical observables along the four-temperature flow must then vanish.
In [1], the thermal equilibrium of static, spherically symmetric perfect fluids in General Relativity was studied. I would like to elaborate three points relevant to the results of [1]. The first point is only a clarification, summarized in theorem 1 below, of results that appear in [1]. The following two points correct the error in [1], stating that the condition for thermodynamic stability, found in [1], is referring to the microcanonical ensemble, while it was referring to the canonical one. In theorems 2 and 3, specific cases for which equivalence of dynamical and thermodynamic stability h…
We study the rest-frame instant form of a new formulation of relativistic perfect fluids in terms of new generalized Eulerian configuration coordinates. After the separation of the relativistic center of mass from the relative variables on the Wigner hyper-planes, we define orientational and shape variables for the fluid, viewed as a relativistic extended deformable body, by introducing dynamical body frames. Finally we define Dixon's multipoles for the fluid.
