We investigate the stability of vortices in two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensates. In analogy with rotating spacetimes and with a careful account of boundary conditions, we show that the dynamical instability of multiply quantized vortices in trapped condensates persists in untrapped, spatially homogeneous geometries and has an ergoregion nature with some modification due to the peculiar dispersion of Bogoliubov sound. Our results open new perspectives to the physics of vortices in trapped condensates, where multiply quantized vortices can be stabilized by interference effects and singly charged vortices can become unstable in suitably designed trap potentials. We show how superradiant scattering can be observed also in the short-time dynamics of dynamically unstable systems, providing an alternative point of view on dynamical (in)stability phenomena in spatially finite systems.

Motivated by a recent demonstration of cyclic addition of quantized vorticity into a Bose-Einstein condensate, the vortex pump, we study dynamical instabilities and core sizes of giant vortices. The core size is found to increase roughly as a square-root function of the quantum number of the vortex, whereas the strength of the dynamical instability either saturates to a fairly low value or increases extremely slowly for large quantum numbers. Our studies suggest that giant vortices of very high angular momenta may be achieved by gradually increasing the operation frequency of the vortex pump.
We theoretically investigate superradiance effects in quantum field theories in curved space-times by proposing an analogue model based on Bose--Einstein condensates subject to a synthetic vector potential. The breaking of the irrotationality constraint of superfluids allows to study superradiance in simple planar geometries and obtain intuitive insight in the amplified scattering processes at ergosurfaces. When boundary conditions are modified allowing for reflections, dynamical instabilities are found, similar to the ones of ergoregions in rotating space-times. Their stabilization by horizon…
We investigate the various physical mechanisms that underlie the dynamical instability of a quantized vortex array at the interface between two counter-propagating superflows in a two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensate. Instabilities of markedly different nature are found to dominate in different flow velocity regimes. For moderate velocities where the two flows are subsonic, the vortex lattice displays a quantized version of the hydrodynamic Kelvin--Helmholtz instability (KHI), with the vortices rolling up and co-rotating. For supersonic flow velocities, the oscillation involved in the KHI…
The formation of vortices is usually considered to be the main mechanism of angular momentum disposal in superfluids. Recently, it was predicted that a superfluid can acquire angular momentum via an alternative, microscopic route -- namely, through interaction with rotating impurities, forming so-called `angulon quasiparticles' [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 203001 (2015)]. The angulon instabilities correspond to transfer of a small number of angular momentum quanta from the impurity to the superfluid, as opposed to vortex instabilities, where angular momentum is quantized in units of $\hbar$ per atom…
We study numerically the dynamical instabilities and splitting of singly and doubly quantized composite vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates harmonically confined to quasi two dimensions. In this system, the vortices become pointlike composite defects that can be classified in terms of an integer pair $(κ_1,κ_2)$ of phase winding numbers. Our simulations based on zero-temperature mean-field theory reveal several vortex splitting behaviors that stem from the multicomponent nature of the system and do not have direct counterparts in single-component condensates. By calculating the…
We present vortex solutions for the homogeneous two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate featuring dipolar atomic interactions, mapped out as a function of the dipolar interaction strength (relative to the contact interactions) and polarization direction. Stable vortex solutions arise in the regimes where the fully homogeneous system is stable to the phonon or roton instabilities. Close to these instabilities, the vortex profile differs significantly from that of a vortex in a nondipolar quantum gas, developing, for example, density ripples and an anisotropic core. Meanwhile, the vortex itself…
We study the splitting dynamics of giant vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates by numerically integrating the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation in time. By taking advantage of tetrahedral tiling in the spatial discretization, we decrease the error and increase the reliability of the numerical method. An extensive survey of vortex splitting symmetries is presented for different aspect ratios of the harmonic trapping potential. The symmetries of the splitting patterns observed in the simulated dynamics are found to be in good agreement with predictions obtained by solving the do…
The experimental realization of quantum-degenerate Bose gases made of atoms with sizeable magnetic dipole moments has created a new type of fluid, known as a quantum ferrofluid, which combines the extraordinary properties of superfluidity and ferrofluidity. A hallmark of superfluids is that they are constrained to rotate through vortices with quantized circulation. In quantum ferrofluids the long-range dipolar interactions add new ingredients by inducing magnetostriction and instabilities, and also affect the structural properties of vortices and vortex lattices. Here we give a review of the t…
We consider the existence, stability and dynamics of the nodeless state and fundamental nonlinear excitations, such as vortices, for a quasi-two-dimensional polariton condensate in the presence of pumping and nonlinear damping. We find a series of interesting features that can be directly contrastedto the case of the typically energy-conserving ultracold alkali-atom Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). For sizeable parameter ranges, in line with earlier findings, the nodeless state becomes unstable towards the formation of {\em stable} nonlinear single or multi-vortex excitations. The potential i…
Quantized vortices have been observed in a variety of superfluid systems, from $^4$He to condensates of alkali-metal bosons and ultracold Fermi gases along the BEC-BCS crossover. In this article we study the stability of singly quantized vortex lines in dilute dipolar self-bound droplets. We first discuss the energetic stability region of dipolar vortex excitations within a variational ansatz in the generalized nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii functional that includes quantum fluctuation corrections. We find a wide region where stationary solutions corresponding to axially-symmetric vortex states exi…
In this work, the spectral properties of a singly-charged vortex in a In this work, the spectral properties of a singly-charged vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a highly anisotropic (disk-shaped) harmonic trap are investigated. Special emphasis is given on the analysis of the so-called anomalous (negative energy) mode of the Bogoliubov spectrum. We use analytical and numerical techniques to illustrate the connection of the anomalous mode to the precession dynamics of the vortex in the trap. Effects due to inhomogeneous interatomic interactions and dissipative perturbations moti…
We study the vortex structures of a two-component Fermi gas experiencing a uniform effective magnetic field in an anisotropic trap that interpolates between quasi-one dimensional (1D) and quasi-two dimensional (2D). At a fixed chemical potential, reducing the anisotropy (or equivalently increasing the attractive interactions or increasing the magnetic field) leads to instabilities towards pair density waves, and vortex lattices. Reducing the chemical potential stabilizes the system. We calculate the phase diagram, and explore the density and pair density. The structures are similar to those pr…
Exciton-polaritons are quasi-particles arising from the strong coupling regime between excitons and photons. In planar microcavitites, phenomena such as superfluidity or Bose-Einstein condensation can be observed. Those systems have demonstrated to be very efficient in the hydrodynamic generation of topological excitations, such as vortex-antivortex pairs or dark solitons. However, the lifetime and motion of those excitations were limited by the driven dissipative nature of the system. In this thesis, we present a rich variety of results about the generation and control of such topological exc…
Exciton-polariton condensates display a variety of intriguing pattern-forming behaviors, particularly when confined in potential traps. It has previously been predicted that triangular lattices of vortices of the same sign will form spontaneously as the result of surface instabilities in a harmonic trap. However, natural disorder, deviation of the external potential from circular symmetry, or higher-order terms modifying the dynamical equations may all have detrimental effects and destabilize the circular trajectories of vortices. Here we address these issues, by characterizing the robustness …
We calculate analytically the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of a toroidal spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate that is subjected to a homogeneous magnetic field and contains vortices with arbitrary winding numbers in the $m_F=\pm 1$ components of the hyperfine spin. We show that a rotonlike spectrum can be obtained, or an initially stable condensate can be made unstable by adjusting the magnitude of the magnetic field or the trapping frequencies. The structure of the instabilities can be analyzed by measuring the particle densities of the spin components. We confirm the validity of the analytical …
