We study the small scale distribution of the eigenfunctions of a point scatterer (the Laplacian perturbed by a delta potential) on two- and three-dimensional flat tori. In two dimensions, we establish small scale equidistribution for the "new" eigenfunctions holding all the way down to the Planck scale. In three dimensions, small scale equidistribution is established for all of the "new" eigenfunctions at certain scales.
In this paper we study eigenfunction statistics for a point scatterer (the Laplacian perturbed by a delta-potential) on a three-dimensional flat torus. The eigenfunctions of this operator are the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian which vanish at the scatterer, together with a set of new eigenfunctions (perturbed eigenfunctions). We first show that for a point scatterer on the standard torus all of the perturbed eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in configuration space. Then we investigate the same problem for a point scatterer on a flat torus with some irrationality conditions, and show un…
We study the Laplacian perturbed by two delta potentials on a two-dimensional flat torus. There are two types of eigenfunctions for this operator: old, or unperturbed eigenfunctions which are eigenfunctions of the standard Laplacian, and new, perturbed eigenfunctions which are affected by the scatterers. We prove that along a density one sequence, the new eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in configuration space, provided that the difference of the scattering points is Diophantine.
We study the small scale distribution of the $L^2$ mass of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the flat torus $\mathbb T^d$. Given an orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions, we show the existence of a density one subsequence whose $L^2$ mass equidistributes at small scales. In dimension two our result holds all the way down to the Planck scale. For dimensions $d=3,4$ we can restrict to individual eigenspaces and show small scale equidistribution in that context. We also study irregularities of quantum equidistribution: We construct eigenfunctions whose $L^2$ mass does not equidistribute at all sca…
Consider a point scatterer (the Laplacian perturbed by a delta-potential) on the standard three-dimensional flat torus. Together with the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian which vanish at the point, this operator has a set of new, perturbed eigenfunctions. In a recent paper, the author was able to show that all of the perturbed eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in configuration space. In this paper we prove that almost all of these eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in phase space, i.e. we prove quantum ergodicity for the subspace of the perturbed eigenfunctions. An analogue result …
Quantum systems whose classical counterpart have ergodic dynamics are quantum ergodic in the sense that almost all eigenstates are uniformly distributed in phase space. In contrast, when the classical dynamics is integrable, there is concentration of eigenfunctions on invariant structures in phase space. In this paper we study eigenfunction statistics for the Laplacian perturbed by a delta-potential (also known as a point scatterer) on a flat torus, a popular model used to study the transition between integrability and chaos in quantum mechanics. The eigenfunctions of this operator consist of …
We prove an analogue of Shnirelman, Zelditch and Colin de Verdiere's Quantum Ergodicity Theorems in a case where there is no underlying classical ergodicity. The system we consider is the Laplacian with a delta potential on the square torus. There are two types of wave functions: old eigenfunctions of the Laplacian, which are not affected by the scatterer, and new eigenfunctions which have a logarithmic singularity at the position of the scatterer. We prove that a full density subsequence of the new eigenfunctions equidistribute in phase space. Our estimates are uniform with respect to the cou…
We study the level spacing distribution for the spectrum of a point scatterer on a flat torus. In the 2-dimensional case, we show that in the weak coupling regime the eigenvalue spacing distribution coincides with that of the spectrum of the Laplacian (ignoring multiplicties), by showing that the perturbed eigenvalues generically clump with the unperturbed ones on the scale of the mean level spacing. We also study the three dimensional case, where the situation is very different.
Consider the 3-dimensional Laplacian with a potential described by point scatterers placed on the integer lattice. We prove that for Floquet-Bloch modes with fixed quasi-momentum satisfying a certain Diophantine condition, there is a subsequence of eigenvalues of positive density whose eigenfunctions exhibit equidistribution in position space and localisation in momentum space. This result complements the result of Ueberschär and Kurlberg who show momentum localisation for zero quasi-momentum in 2-dimensions, and is the first result in this direction in 3-dimensions.
We prove quantitative equidistribution properties for orthonormal bases of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the rational $d$-torus. We show that the rate of equidistribution of such eigenfunctions is of polynomial decay. We also prove that equidistribution of eigenfunctions holds for symbols supported in balls with a radius shrinking at a polynomial rate.
We prove a new quantum variance estimate for toral eigenfunctions. As an application, we show that, given any orthonormal basis of toral eigenfunctions and any smooth embedded hypersurface with nonvanishing principal curvatures, there exists a density one subsequence of eigenfunctions that equidistribute along the hypersurface. This is an analogue of the Quantum Ergodic Restriction theorems in the case of the flat torus, which in particular verifies the Bourgain-Rudnick's conjecture on $L^2$-restriction estimates for a density one subsequence of eigenfunctions in any dimension. Using our quant…
We study the small scale distribution of the $L^2$-mass of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the the two-dimensional flat torus. Given an orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions, Lester and Rudnick showed the existence of a density one subsequence whose $L^2$-mass equidistributes more-or-less down to the Planck scale. We give a more precise version of their result showing equidistribution holds down to a small power of log above Planck scale, and also showing that the $L^2$-mass fails to equidistribute at a slightly smaller power of log above the Planck scale. This article rests on a number of re…
In this paper we study the ergodic properties of mathematical billiards describing the uniform motion of a point in a flat torus from which finitely many, pairwise disjoint, tubular neighborhoods of translated subtori (the so called cylindric scatterers) have been removed. We prove that every such system is ergodic (actually, a Bernoulli flow), unless a simple geometric obstacle for the ergodicity is present.
It is well known that, in the Boltzmann-Grad limit, the distribution of the free path length in the Lorentz gas with disordered scatterer configuration has an exponential density. If, on the other hand, the scatterers are located at the vertices of a Euclidean lattice, the density has a power-law tail proportional to xi^{-3}. In the present paper we construct scatterer configurations whose free path lengths have a distribution with tail xi^{-N-2} for any positive integer N. We also discuss the properties of the random flight process that describes the Lorentz gas in the Boltzmann-Grad limit. T…
Previous studies of kinetic transport in the Lorentz gas have been limited to cases where the scatterers are distributed at random (e.g. at the points of a spatial Poisson process) or at the vertices of a Euclidean lattice. In the present paper we investigate quasicrystalline scatterer configurations, which are non-periodic, yet strongly correlated. A famous example is the vertex set of the Penrose tiling. Our main result proves the existence of a limit distribution of the free path length, which answers a question of Wennberg. The limit distribution is characterised by a certain random variab…
We consider momentum push-forwards of measures arising as quantum limits (semi-classical measures) of eigenfunctions of a point scatterer on the standard flat torus $\mathbb T^2 = \mathbb R^2/\mathbb Z^{2}$. Given any probability measure arising by placing delta masses, with equal weights, on $\mathbb Z^2$-lattice points on circles and projecting to the unit circle, we show that the mass of certain subsequences of eigenfunctions, in momentum space, completely localizes on that measure and is completely delocalized in position (i.e., concentration on Lagrangian states.) We also show that the ma…
We consider the Laplacian with a delta potential (a "point scatterer") on an irrational torus, where the square of the side ratio is diophantine. The eigenfunctions fall into two classes ---"old" eigenfunctions (75%) of the Laplacian which vanish at the support of the delta potential, and therefore are not affected, and "new" eigenfunctions (25%) which are affected, and as a result feature a logarithmic singularity at the location of the delta potential. Within a full density subsequence of the new eigenfunctions we determine all semiclassical measures in the weak coupling regime and show that…
We define a random model for the moments of the new eigenfunctions of a point scat-terer on a 2-dimensional rectangular flat torus. In the deterministic setting,Seba conjectured these moments to be asymptotically Gaussian, in the semi-classical limit. This conjecture was disproved by Kurlberg-Uebersch{ä}r on Diophantine tori. In our model, we describe the accumulation points in distribution of the randomized moments, in the semi-classical limit. We prove that asymptotic Gaussianity holds if and only if some function, modeling the multiplicities of the Laplace eigenfunctions, diverges to +$\inf…
The Seba billiard, a rectangular torus with a point scatterer, is a popular model to study the transition between integrability and chaos in quantum systems. Whereas such billiards are classically essentially integrable, they may display features such as quantum ergodicity [KU] which are usually associated with quantum systems whose classical dynamics is chaotic. Seba proposed that the eigenfunctions of toral point scatterers should also satisfy Berry's random wave conjecture, which implies that the semiclassical moments of the eigenfunctions ought to be Gaussian. We prove a conjecture of Keat…
We study a random Schroedinger operator, the Laplacian with N independently uniformly distributed random delta potentials on flat tori T^d_L = R^d/LZ^d, d = 2, 3, where L > 0 is large. We determine a condition in terms of the size of the torus L, the density of the potentials ρ= N/L^d and the energy of the eigenfunction E such any such eigenfunctions will with nonzero probability be uniformly distributed on the entire torus. We remark that the equidistribution we prove here is still consistent with a localized regime, where the localization length is much larger than the size of the torus. In …
