The techniques of deep learning have become the state of the art methodology for executing complicated tasks from various domains of computer vision, natural language processing, and several other areas. Due to its rapid development and promising benchmarks in those fields, researchers started experimenting with this technique to perform in the area of, especially in intrusion detection related tasks. Deep learning is a subset and a natural extension of classical Machine learning and an evolved model of neural networks. This paper contemplates and discusses all the methodologies related to the leading edge Deep learning and Neural network models purposing to the arena of Intrusion Detection Systems.
In computer security, designing a robust intrusion detection system is one of the most fundamental and important problems. In this paper, we propose a system-call language-modeling approach for designing anomaly-based host intrusion detection systems. To remedy the issue of high false-alarm rates commonly arising in conventional methods, we employ a novel ensemble method that blends multiple thresholding classifiers into a single one, making it possible to accumulate 'highly normal' sequences. The proposed system-call language model has various advantages leveraged by the fact that it can lear…
Generative adversarial networks have been able to generate striking results in various domains. This generation capability can be general while the networks gain deep understanding regarding the data distribution. In many domains, this data distribution consists of anomalies and normal data, with the anomalies commonly occurring relatively less, creating datasets that are imbalanced. The capabilities that generative adversarial networks offer can be leveraged to examine these anomalies and help alleviate the challenge that imbalanced datasets propose via creating synthetic anomalies. This anom…
The extensive use of Information and Communication Technology in critical infrastructures such as Industrial Control Systems make them vulnerable to cyber-attacks. One particular class of cyber-attacks is advanced persistent threats where highly skilled attackers can steal user authentication information's and move in the network from host to host until a valuable target is reached. The detection of the attacker should occur as soon as possible in order to take appropriate response, otherwise the attacker will have enough time to reach sensitive assets. When facing intelligent threats, intelli…

This paper proposes a generic classification system designed to detect security threats based on the behavior of malware samples. The system relies on statistical features computed from proxy log fields to train detectors using a database of malware samples. The behavior detectors serve as basic reusable building blocks of the multi-level detection architecture. The detectors identify malicious communication exploiting encrypted URL strings and domains generated by a Domain Generation Algorithm (DGA) which are frequently used in Command and Control (C&C), phishing, and click fraud. Surprisingl…

Smart grid is an alternative solution of the conventional power grid which harnesses the power of the information technology to save the energy and meet today's environment requirements. Due to the inherent vulnerabilities in the information technology, the smart grid is exposed to a wide variety of threats that could be translated into cyber-attacks. In this paper, we develop a deep learning-based intrusion detection system to defend against cyber-attacks in the advanced metering infrastructure network. The proposed machine learning approach is trained and tested extensively on an empirical i…
Evolving cybersecurity threats are a persistent challenge for systemadministrators and security experts as new malwares are continu-ally released. Attackers may look for vulnerabilities in commercialproducts or execute sophisticated reconnaissance campaigns tounderstand a targets network and gather information on securityproducts like firewalls and intrusion detection / prevention systems(network or host-based). Many new attacks tend to be modificationsof existing ones. In such a scenario, rule-based systems fail to detectthe attack, even though there are minor differences in conditions /attri…
Neural networks have become an increasingly popular solution for network intrusion detection systems (NIDS). Their capability of learning complex patterns and behaviors make them a suitable solution for differentiating between normal traffic and network attacks. However, a drawback of neural networks is the amount of resources needed to train them. Many network gateways and routers devices, which could potentially host an NIDS, simply do not have the memory or processing power to train and sometimes even execute such models. More importantly, the existing neural network solutions are trained i…

The last few years have seen an increasing wave of attacks with serious economic and privacy damages, which evinces the need for accurate Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS). Recent works propose the use of Machine Learning (ML) techniques for building such systems (e.g., decision trees, neural networks). However, existing ML-based NIDS are barely robust to common adversarial attacks, which limits their applicability to real networks. A fundamental problem of these solutions is that they treat and classify flows independently. In contrast, in this paper we argue the importance of focusi…
In the world today computer networks have a very important position and most of the urban and national infrastructure as well as organizations are managed by computer networks, therefore, the security of these systems against the planned attacks is of great importance. Therefore, researchers have been trying to find these vulnerabilities so that after identifying ways to penetrate the system, they will provide system protection through preventive or countermeasures. SVM is one of the major algorithms for intrusion detection. In this research, we studied a variety of malware and methods of intr…
This paper proposes a methodology for host-based anomaly detection using a semi-supervised algorithm namely one-class classifier combined with a PCA-based feature extraction technique called Eigentraces on system call trace data. The one-class classification is based on generating a set of artificial data using a reference distribution and combining the target class probability function with artificial class density function to estimate the target class density function through the Bayes formulation. The benchmark dataset, ADFA-LD, is employed for the simulation study. ADFA-LD dataset contains…

To assure cyber security of an enterprise, typically SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) system is in place to normalize security event from different preventive technologies and flag alerts. Analysts in the security operation center (SOC) investigate the alerts to decide if it is truly malicious or not. However, generally the number of alerts is overwhelming with majority of them being false positive and exceeding the SOC's capacity to handle all alerts. There is a great need to reduce the false positive rate as much as possible. While most previous research focused on network in…

Intrusion detection for computer network systems has been becoming one of the most critical tasks for network administrators today. It has an important role for organizations, governments and our society due to the valuable resources hosted on computer networks. Traditional misuse detection strategies are unable to detect new and unknown intrusion types. In contrast, anomaly detection in network security aims to distinguish between illegal or malicious events and normal behavior of network systems. Anomaly detection can be considered as a classification problem where it builds models of normal…

We investigate the detection of botnet command and control (C2) hosts in massive IP traffic using machine learning methods. To this end, we use NetFlow data -- the industry standard for monitoring of IP traffic -- and ML models using two sets of features: conventional NetFlow variables and distributional features based on NetFlow variables. In addition to using static summaries of NetFlow features, we use quantiles of their IP-level distributions as input features in predictive models to predict whether an IP belongs to known botnet families. These models are used to develop intrusion detectio…
