We discuss the recently measured event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. It is shown that the observed non-monotonic behaviour of the scaled variance of multiplicity distribution as a function of collision centrality (such effect is not observed in a widely used string-hadronic models of nuclear collisions) can be fully explained by the correlations between produced particles promoting cluster formation. We define a cluster as a quasi-neutral gas of charged and neutral particles which exhibits collective behaviour. The characteristic space scale of this shielding is the Debye length. Multiplicity distribution in a cluster is given by Negative Binomial distribution while the rest (reservoir), treated as a superposition of elementary collisions, is described by Binomial distribution. The ability to generate spatial structures (cluster phase) sign the propensity to self-organize of hadronic matter.
We present our results on multiplicity fluctuations in the framework of the string clustering approach. We compare our results --with and without clustering formation-- with CERN SPS NA49 data. We find a non-monotonic behaviour of these fluctuations as a function of the collision centrality, which has the same origin as the observed fluctuations of transverse momentum: the correlations between the produced particles due to the cluster formation.
In this paper, we investigate the multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles observed in high-energy nuclear collisions and relate them to the size of hadronizing systems which happen during such processes. We use the average multiplicities $\langle N\rangle $ and variances $Var\left(N\right)$ of multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced in centrality selected collisions of relativistic heavy-ion nuclei to evaluate the dynamic variable $Ω$ and study its dependence on the size of colliding nuclei. We connect the observed system-size dependence of multiplicity fluctuations wit…
The fluctuations due to the clustering of color sources can explain the behaviour of the scaled multiplicity variance and transverse momentum fluctuations with centrality. They also predict a nonmonotonic behaviour with centrality for the multiplictiy associated to high pT events. The clustering of color sources gives rise to an increase in the long-range correaltions with centrality as well as to a supression at high centrality with respect to superposition model predictions.
We show that the multiplicity distribution associated to high $p_T$ events is given in terms of the total multiplicity distribution in an universal way due to the fact that these events are self-shadowed. In particular, the mean associated multiplicity is related to the fluctuations on the multiplicity distribution. In the framework of percolation of strings these fluctuations are related to clustering and as a result the associated multiplicity presents a peculiar dependence on centrality which can be experimentally tested.
We present our results on transverse momentum fluctuations, multiplicity fluctuations and transverse momentum distributions for baryons and mesons in the framework of the clustering of color sources. We determine under what conditions the initial state configurations can lead to color connection, and more specifically, if variations of the initial state can lead to a transition from disconnected to connected color clusters, modifying the number of effective sources. We find that beyond a critical point, one has a condensate, containing interacting and hence color-connected sources. This point …
The results concerning the $e^+e^-$ production in peripheral highly relativistic heavy-ion collisions presented in a recent paper by Baltz {\em{et al.}} are rederived in a very straightforward manner. It is shown that the solution of the Dirac equation directly leads to the multiplicity, i.e. to the total number of electron-positron pairs produced by the electromagnetic field of the ions, whereas the calculation of the single pair production probability is much more involved. A critical observation concerns the unsolved problem of seemingly absent Coulomb corrections (Bethe-Maximon corrections…
We present our results on transverse momentum fluctuations and multiplicity fluctuations in the framework of the clustering of color sources. In this approach, elementary color sources -strings- overlap forming clusters, so the number of effective sources is modified. These clusters decay into particles with mean transverse momentum that depends on the number of elementary sources that conform each cluster and the area occupied by the cluster. We find a non-monotonic dependence of the $p_T$ and multiplicity fluctuations with the number of participants. In our approach, the physical mechanism r…
It is shown that de-confinement can be achieved in high multiplicity non jet $\bar{p}$p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 1.8 TeV Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory(FNAL- E735) experiment. Previously the evidence for de-confinement was the demonstrated by the constant freeze out energy density in high multiplicity events. In this paper we use the same data but analyze the transverse momentum spectrum in the framework of the clustering of color sources. The charged particle pseudorapidities densities in the range 7.0 $\leq \langle dN_{c}/dη\rangle \leq$26.0 are considered. Results are presented for …
We present our results on multiplicity and $p_T$ fluctuations at LHC energies in the framework of the clustering of color sources. In this approach, elementary color sources -strings- overlap forming clusters, so the number of effective sources is modified. We find that the fluctuations are proportional to the number of those clusters.
We apply the Sudakov technique to description of the multiple production of lepton pairs in peripheral collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions. For heavy ions with $Z_1α\sim Z_2α\ll 1$ one needs a careful treatment of the multiple Coulomb exchange between colliding ions and screening effects, whereas interaction of real or virtual lepton pairs with colliding ions can be neglected. We demonstrate that while the inclusive spectra are modified by multiple Coulomb exchange between the colliding ions, the Coulomb corrections to the momentum integrated multiplicity distributions do vanish. After …
The study of the peculiarities of the distribution of secondary particles depending on the degree centrality and the degree of asymmetry of the interacting nuclei, is performed. The number of multicharged fragments of the projectile nucleus $N_f$ in interactions sharply asymmetric nuclei depends on the centrality degree of interaction. At that, the events with $N_f$ =1 are separated clearly in the distribution of the total charge of the fragments of a projectile nucleus $Q$ depending on the nature of the correlation of the number of fragments of the target nucleus and the multiplicity of secon…
The study of multiparticle correlations and collectivity in the hot and dense matter created in collisions of heavy-ions as well as those of smaller systems such as proton--heavy-ion collisions has progressed to the point where detailed knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of the proton is needed to confront experimental data. We discuss results from a simple proof-of-principle initial state parton model which reproduces many features of the data on proton--heavy-ion collisions that are often ascribed to hydrodynamic flow. We outline how this model can be further improved with particul…
In high energy collisions involving small nuclei (p+p or x+Au collisions where x=p, d, or $^3$He) the fluctuating size, shape and internal gluonic structure of the nucleon is shown to have a strong effect on the initial size and shape of the fireball of new matter created in the collision. A systematic study of the eccentricity coefficients describing this initial fireball state for several semi-realistic models of nucleon substructure and for several practically relevant collision systems involving small nuclei is presented. The key importance of multiplicity fluctuations in such systems is p…
Clustering of the four-nucleon system at kinetic freezeout conditions is studied using path-integral Monte Carlo techniques. This method seeks to improve upon previous calculations which relied on approximate semiclassical methods or few-body quantum mechanics. Estimates are given for the decay probabilities of the 4N system into various light nuclei decay channels and the strength of spatial correlations is characterized. Additionally, a simple model is presented to describe the impact of this clustering on nucleon multiplicity distributions. The effects of a possible modification of the inte…
In this paper, we study a range of collision systems involving deformed ions and compare the elliptic and triangular flow harmonics produced in a hydrodynamics scenario versus a color glass condensate (CGC) scenario. For the hydrodynamics scenario, we generate initial conditions using TRENTO and work within a linear response approximation to obtain the final flow harmonics. For the CGC scenario, we use the explicit calculation of two-gluon correlations taken in the high-$p_T$ ``(semi)dilute-(semi)dilute'' regime to express the flow harmonics in terms of the density profile of the collision. We…
This is a contribution for the Proceedings of 5th International Conference on New Frontiers in Physics (ICNFP 2016), held at Crete, 6-14 July 2016. Our goal is to obtain phenomenologically reliable insights for the physics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) from the holography. I briefly review how in the holographic setup one can describe the QGP formation in heavy ion collisions and how to get quantitatively the main characteristics of the QGP formation -- the total multiplicity and the thermalization time. To fit the experimental form of dependence of total multiplicity on energy, obtained at …
In central Pb-Pb collisions at LHC the multiplicity of particles produced is so high that it should become feasible to examine the nature of transition from the deconfined quark-gluon state to the confined hadron state by methods that rely on the availability of high multiplicity events. We consider four classes of the transition process ranging from critical behavior to totally random behavior, depending on whether or not there is clustering of quarks and on whether or not there is contraction of dense clusters due to confinement. Fluctuations of bin multiplicities in each event are quantifie…
We propose to use {\it multidimensional} \w \an for pattern recognition in high multiplicity events and consider some examples. Wavelet analysis reveals clustering phenomena in multiparticle production processes. Results of event-by-event studies of some nucleus-nucleus collisions at 158A GeV are reported. The clusterization topology is found to be different in different events. Typical patterns include jets and ring-like structures. They are demonstrated here for five high multiplicity events.
The data on transverse momentum integrated hadron yields in different multiplicity classes of p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV have been analyzed to extract the chemical freeze-out parameters using a thermal model. The chemical freeze-out parameters have been extracted for three different freeze-out schemes: i. unified freeze-out for all hadrons in complete thermal equilibrium (1CFO), ii. unified freeze-out for all hadrons with an additional parameter $γ_S$ which accounts for possible out-of-equilibrium production of strange hadrons (1CFO$+γ_S$), and iii. separate freeze-out for hadrons with…
We introduce a new class of event shapes to characterize the jet-like structure of an event. Like traditional event shapes, our observables are infrared/collinear safe and involve a sum over all hadrons in an event, but like a jet clustering algorithm, they incorporate a jet radius parameter and a transverse momentum cut. Three of the ubiquitous jet-based observables---jet multiplicity, summed scalar transverse momentum, and missing transverse momentum---have event shape counterparts that are closely correlated with their jet-based cousins. Due to their "local" computational structure, these j…
Minijets provide useful information on parton interactions in the low transverse-momentum (low-$p_T$) region. Because minijets produce clusters, we study the clustering properties of produced particles in high-energy $pp$ collisions as a first step to identify minijets. We develop an algorithm to find clusters by using the k-means clustering method, in conjunction with a k-number (cluster number) selection principle in the space of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angles. We test the clustering algorithm using events generated by PYTHIA 8.1, for $pp$ collision at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. We find that c…
The peculiar role of heavy-flavour observables in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is discussed. Produced in the early stage, $c$ and $b$ quarks cross the hot medium arising from the collision, interacting strongly with the latter, until they hadronize. Depending on the strength of the interaction heavy quarks may or not approach kinetic equilibrium with the plasma, tending in the first case to follow the collective flow of the expanding fireball. The presence of a hot deconfined medium may also affect heavy-quark hadronization, being possible for them to recombine with the surrounding light …

We present a theoretical investigation of the resonant elastic scattering of twisted light, carrying angular momentum, by partially stripped ions. Special emphasis is placed on a question of whether the scattered radiation is also twisted. In order to investigate such an "angular momentum transfer", we develop an approach that allows us to find a quantum state of the final photon without projecting it onto a detector state. A general expression for this so--called \textit{evolved} state of outgoing radiation is derived and it can be used to analyze the resonant scattering by any ion, independe…
The gravitational waves emitted from a binary neutron star merger, as predicted from general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics calculations, are sensitive to the appearance of quark matter and the stiffness of the equation of state of QCD matter present in the inner cores of the stars. This is a new messenger observable from outer space, which does provide direct signals for the phase structure of strongly interacting QCD matter at high baryon density and high temperature. These astrophysically created extremes of thermodynamics do match, to within 20\%, the values of densities and temperatur…
In collider physics, jet algorithms are a ubiquitous tool for clustering particles into discrete jet objects. Event shapes offer an alternative way to characterize jets, and one can define a jet multiplicity event shape, which can take on fractional values, using the framework of "jets without jets". In this paper, we perform the first analytic studies of fractional jet multiplicity $\tilde{N}_{\rm jet}$ in the context of $e^+e^-$ collisions. We use fixed-order QCD to understand the $\tilde{N}_{\rm jet}$ cross section at order $α_s^2$, and we introduce a candidate factorization theorem to capt…
In the framework of a multi-phase transport model, fluctuation and correlation of the azimuthal anisotropies in $^{12}$C+$^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV are explored. Properties of the initial eccentricity and final harmonic flow fluctuation resulted from $^{12}$C+$^{197}$Au collisions with Woods-Saxon configuration and triangular $α$-clustering configurations of $^{12}$C are investigated via scaled variance, skewness and kurtosis. Comparisons are made between results from $α$-clustered configurations and Woods-Saxon configuration. The triangular flow fluctuation is found to…
The thermalization of the particles produced in collisions of small size objects can be achieved by quantum entanglement of the partons of the initial state as it was analyzed recently in proton-proton collisions. We extend such study to Pb-Pb collisions and to different multiplicities of proton-proton collisions. We observe that, in all cases, the effective temperature is approximately proportional to the hard scale of the collision. We show that such relation between the thermalization temperature and the hard scale can be explained as a consequence of the clustering of the color sources. Th…
Oxygen ($^{16}$O) ions are planned to be injected at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in its next runs, and a day of physics run is anticipated for O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 7 TeV. As the system size of O+O collisions has the final state multiplicity overlap with those produced in pp, p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions, the study of global properties in O+O collisions may provide a deeper insight into the heavy-ion-like behavior observed in small collision systems and its similarities/differences with a larger system like Pb+Pb collisions. In the present work, we report the predictions fo…
The centrality dependence of the $p/π$ ratio measured by the ALICE Collaboration in 5.02 TeV Pb-Pb collisions indicates a statistically significant suppression with the increase of the charged particle multiplicity once the centrality-correlated part of the systematic uncertainty is eliminated from the data. We argue that this behavior can be attributed to baryon annihilation in the hadronic phase. By implementing the $B\bar{B} \leftrightarrow 5π$ reaction within a generalized partial chemical equilibrium framework, we estimate the annihilation freeze-out temperature at different centralities,…
