In the era of precision cosmology, it is essential to empirically determine the Hubble constant with an accuracy of one per cent or better. At present, the uncertainty on this constant is dominated by the uncertainty in the calibration of the Cepheid period - luminosity relationship (also known as Leavitt Law). The Large Magellanic Cloud has traditionally served as the best galaxy with which to calibrate Cepheid period-luminosity relations, and as a result has become the best anchor point for the cosmic distance scale. Eclipsing binary systems composed of late-type stars offer the most precise and accurate way to measure the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud. Currently the limit of the precision attainable with this technique is about two per cent, and is set by the precision of the existing calibrations of the surface brightness - colour relation. Here we report the calibration of the surface brightness-colour relation with a precision of 0.8 per cent. We use this calibration to determine the geometrical distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud that is precise to 1 per cent based on 20 eclipsing binary systems. The final distane is 49.59 +/- 0.09 (statistical) +/- 0.54 (systematic) kiloparsecs.
We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to measure the absolute proper motion of the hypervelocity star (HVS) HE 0437-5439, a short-lived B star located in the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We observe (μ_α, μ_δ)=(+0.53+-0.25(stat)+-0.33(sys), +0.09+-0.21(stat)+-0.48(sys)) mas/yr. The velocity vector points directly away from the center of the Milky Way; an origin from the center of the LMC is ruled out at the 3-sigma level. The flight time of the HVS from the Milky Way exceeds its main-sequence lifetime, thus its stellar nature requires it to be a blue straggler. The large space…
We present the results of the photometric analysis of a large part of the main body of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Using the 6.5m Magellan Telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, we have acquired deep B and I images in four fields (0.44 degree each in diameter), yielding accurate photometry for 1,068,893 stars down to 24th magnitude, with a spatial resolution of 0.20 arcsec per pixel. Colour-magnitude diagrams and (completeness corrected) luminosity functions have been constructed, yielding significant new results that indicate at least two discrete star formation events over a per…
We use the proper motions (PM) of half a million red giant stars in Large Magellanic Cloud measured by Gaia to construct a 2d kinematic map of mean PM and its dispersion across the galaxy, out to 7 Kpc from its centre. We then explore a range of dynamical models and measure the rotation curve, mean azimuthal velocity, velocity dispersion profiles, and the orientation of the galaxy. We find that the circular velocity reaches 90 km/s at 5 Kpc, and that the velocity dispersion ranges from 30-40 km/s in the galaxy centre to 15-20 km/s at 7 Kpc.
We constrain the possible presence of a central black hole (BH) in the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This requires spectroscopic measurements over an area of order a square degree, due to the poorly known position of the kinematic center. Such measurements are now possible with the impressive field of view of the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the ESO Very Large Telescope. We used the Calcium Triplet (~850nm) spectral lines in many short-exposure MUSE pointings to create a two-dimensional integrated-light line-of-sight velocity map from the ~$10^8$ individual spectra…
We present a detailed investigation of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) disk using classical Cepheids. Our analysis is based on optical (I,V; OGLE-IV), near-infrared (NIR: J,H,Ks) and mid-infrared (MIR: w1; WISE) mean magnitudes. By adopting new templates to estimate the NIR mean magnitudes from single-epoch measurements, we build the currently most accurate, largest and homogeneous multi-band dataset of LMC Cepheids. We determine Cepheid individual distances using optical and NIR Period-Wesenheit relations (PWRs), to measure the geometry of the LMC disk and its viewing angles. Cepheid distanc…
We obtained new spectra of fourteen Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae with the South African Large Telescope to determine heating rates of their central stars and to verify evolutionary models of post-asymptotic giant branch stars. We compared new spectra with observations made in previous years. Five planetary nebulae showed an increase in excitation over time. Four of their central stars exhibit [WC] features in their spectra, including three new detections. This raises the total number of [WC] central stars of PNe in the Magellanic Clouds to ten. We compared determined heating rates of the…
We study the luminosity function of intermediate-age red-clump stars using deep, near-infrared photometric data covering $\sim$ 20 deg$^2$ located throughout the central part of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), comprising the main body and the galaxy's eastern wing, based on observations obtained with the VISTA Survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC). We identified regions which show a foreground population ($\sim$11.8 $\pm$ 2.0 kpc in front of the main body) in the form of a distance bimodality in the red-clump distribution. The most likely explanation for the origin of this feature is tidal s…
We present proper motion (PM) measurements within the central region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using near-infrared data from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Cloud system (VMC). This work encompasses 18 VMC tiles covering a total sky area of $\sim$28~deg$^2$. We computed absolute stellar PMs from multi-epoch observations in the $K_s$ filter over time baselines between $\sim$12 and 47 months. Our final catalogue contains $\sim$6,322,000 likely LMC member stars with derived PMs. We employed a simple flat-rotating disc model to analyse and interpret the PM data. We found a stellar cen…
Despite their close proximity, the complex interplay between the two Magellanic Clouds, the Milky Way, and the resulting tidal features, is still poorly understood. Recent studies have shown that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has a very extended disk strikingly perturbed in its outskirts. We search for recent star formation in the far outskirts of the LMC, out to ~30 degrees from its center. We have collected intermediate-resolution spectra of thirty-one young star candidates in the periphery of the LMC and measured their radial velocity, stellar parameters, distance and age. Our measuremen…
The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) are the largest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and close enough to allow for a detailed exploration of their structure and formation history. The Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History (SMASH) is a community Dark Energy Camera (DECam) survey of the Magellanic Clouds using $\sim$50 nights to sample over $\sim$2400 deg$^2$ centered on the Clouds at $\sim$20% filling factor (but with contiguous coverage in the central regions) and to depths of $\sim$24th mag in $ugriz$. The primary goals of SMASH are to map out the extended stellar periph…
We present and analyze the radial luminosity profiles of a sample of 1066 stellar clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. By design, this study closely follows the compilation by Hill & Zaritsky of the structural parameters of stellar clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Both King and Elson-Fall-Freeman (EFF) model profiles are fit to V-band surface brightness profiles measured from the Magellanic Cloud Photometric Survey images. We tabulate the concentration, central surface brightness, tidal radii, 90% enclosed luminosity radii (r_{90}), and local background luminosity density. Over two t…
We present results from the largest CaII triplet line metallicity study of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) field red giant stars to date, involving 3037 objects spread across approximately 37.5 sq. deg., centred on this galaxy. We find a median metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.99+/-0.01, with clear evidence for an abundance gradient of -0.075+/-0.011 dex / deg. over the inner 5 deg. We interpret the abundance gradient to be the result of an increasing fraction of young stars with decreasing galacto-centric radius, coupled with a uniform global age-metallicity relation. We also demonstrate that the age-me…
We present the first spatially resolved map of stellar proper motions within the central ($\sim$3.1 $\times$ 2.4 kpc) regions of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data used for this study encompasses four tiles from the ongoing near-infrared VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system and covers a total contiguous area on the sky of $\sim$6.81 deg$^2$. Proper motions have been calculated independently in two dimensions from the spatial offsets in the $K_s$ filter over time baselines between 22 and 27 months. The reflex motions of $\sim$33~000 background galaxies are used to calibrate the …
We carried out a spectroscopic follow-up program of the four new stellar stream candidates detected by Belokurov & Koposov (2016) in the outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using FORS2 (VLT). The medium-resolution spectra were used to measure the line-of-sight velocities, estimate stellar metallicities and to classify stars into Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) and Blue Straggler (BS) stars. Using the 4-D phase-space information, we attribute approximately one half of our sample to the Magellanic Clouds, while the rest is part of the Galactic foreground. Only two of the four stream candi…
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the closest and most studied example of an irregular galaxy. Among its principal defining morphological features, its off-centred bar and single spiral arm stand out, defining a whole family of galaxies known as the Magellanic spirals (Sm). These structures are thought to be triggered by tidal interactions and possibly maintained via gas accretion. However, it is still unknown whether they are long-lived stable structures. In this work, by combining photometry that reaches down to the oldest main sequence turn-off in the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMD, up to…
We investigate the tidally-induced conversion of barred late-type spirals to Magellanic-type discs with numerical simulations, to establish how the lifetime of lopsidedness (asymmetry) varies with numerical parametrizations. Using a reference model based on observed properties of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), we show that its off-centre bar, one-arm spiral and one-sided star formation can be induced by a brief tidal interaction. We thereafter perform a detailed parameter study, and find that at the dynamical mass of LMC-type discs ($\sim$10$^{\rm 10}$ \md{}), stellar lopsidedness (as quant…
We present for the first time extended stellar density and/or surface brightness radial profiles for almost all the known Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) old globular clusters (GCs). These were built from DECam images and reach out to ~ 4 times the GCs' tidal radii. The background subtracted radial profiles reveal that the GCs located closer than ~ 5 kpc from the LMC centre contain an excess of stars in their outermost regions with respect to the stellar density expected from a King profile. Such a residual amount of stars - not seen in GCs located farther than ~ 5 kpc from the LMC centre-, as we…
We present a precise optical and near-infrared determination of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) brightness in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (respectively LMC and SMC). The commonly used calibrations of the absolute magnitude of the TRGB lead to an overestimation of the distance to the LMC and SMC in the K band, and an underestimation of the distance in the optical I band for both galaxies. Reported discrepancies are at the level of 0.2 mag, with respect to the very accurate distance determinations to both Clouds based on late-type eclipsing binaries. The differential distances b…
We have analysed archival data taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) during 2001--2003 and detected nine new interstellar and circumstellar water masers in the LMC. This takes the total number of star formation water masers in the LMC to 23, spread over 14 different star forming regions and three evolved stars. Three water maser sources (N105a/MC23, N113/MC24, N157a/MC74) have been detected in all the previous observations that targeted these sites, although all show significant variability on timescales of decades. The total number of independent water maser sources now know…
We used resolved star counts from Hubble Space Telescope images to determine the center of gravity and the projected density profiles of 6 old globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), namely NGC 1466, NGC 1841, NGC 1898, NGC 2210, NGC 2257 and Hodge 11. For each system, the LMC field contribution was properly taken into account by making use, when needed, of parallel HST observations. The derived values of the center of gravity may differ by several arcseconds (corresponding to more than 1 pc at the distance of the LMC) from previous determinations. The cluster density profiles a…
We model the dynamical interaction between the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds and their corresponding stellar cluster populations. Our goal is to explore whether the lack of old clusters ($\gtrsim 7$ Gyr) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) can be the result of the capture of clusters by the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), as well as their ejection due to the tidal interaction between the two galaxies. For this purpose we perform a suite of numerical simulations probing a wide range of parameters for the orbit of the SMC about the LMC. We find that, for orbital eccentricities $e \geq 0.4$, ap…
The number of star clusters that populate the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) at deprojected distances < 4 deg has been recently found to be nearly double the known size of the system. Because of the unprecedented consequences of this outcome in our knowledge of the LMC cluster formation and dissolution histories, we closely revisited such a compilation of objects and found that only ~ 35 per cent of the previously known catalogued clusters has been included. The remaining entries are likely related to stellar overdensities of the LMC composite star field, because there is a remarkable enhancemen…
We investigate spatial variations of turbulent properties in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by using neutral hydrogen HI observations. With the goal of testing the importance of stellar feedback on HI turbulence, we define central and outer SMC regions based on the star formation rate (SFR) surface density, as well as the HI integrated intensity. We use the structure function and the Velocity Channel Analysis (VCA) to calculate the power-law index (gamma) for both underlying density and velocity fields in these regions. In all cases, our results show essentially no difference in gamma betwee…
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) has recently been found to harbour more than two hundred per cent increase of its known cluster population. We provide here with solid evidence that such an unprecedented number of clusters could be largely overestimated. On the one hand, the fully-automatic procedure used to identify such an enormous cluster candidate sample did not recover ~ 50 per cent, in average, of the known relatively bright clusters located in the SMC main body. On the other hand, the number of new cluster candidates per time unit as a function of time results noticeably different to th…
The level of central segregation of Blue Straggler stars proved to be an excellent tracer of the dynamical evolution of old star clusters (the so-called "dynamical clock"), both in the Milky Way and in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The $A^{+}$ parameter, used to measure the Blue Stragglers degree of segregation, has in fact been found to strongly correlate with the parent cluster central relaxation time. Here we studied the Blue-Straggler population of two young stellar systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud, namely NGC 339 (which is 6 Gyr old) and NGC 419 (with an age of only 1.5 Gyr), in order …
Due to their close proximity, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (SMC/LMC) provide natural laboratories for understanding how galaxies form and evolve. With the goal of determining the structure and dynamical state of the SMC, we present new spectroscopic data for $\sim$ 3000 SMC red giant branch stars observed using the AAOmega spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We complement our data with further spectroscopic measurements from previous studies that used the same instrumental configuration and proper motions from the \textit{Gaia} Data Release 2 catalogue. Analysing the photo…
This work presents a new detection of H$_2$ absorption arising in a high velocity cloud (HVC) associated with either the Milky Way or the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The absorber was found in an archival Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectrum of the LMC star Sk-70$^\circ$32. This is the fifth well-characterized H$_2$ absorber to be found in the Milky Way's halo and the second such absorber outside the Magellanic Stream and Bridge. The absorber has a local standard of rest central velocity of $+$140 km s$^{-1}$ and a H$_2$ column density of $10^{17.5}$ cm$^{-2}$. It is most likely pa…
We present results from Washington CT1 photometry for eleven star fields located in the western outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), which cover angular distances to its centre from 2 up to 13 degrees (~ 2.2 - 13.8 kpc). The colour- magnitude diagrams, cleaned from the unavoidable Milky Way (MW) and background galaxy signatures, reveal that the most distant dominant main sequence (MS) stellar populations from the SMC centre are located at an angular distance of ~ 5.7 deg (6.1 kpc); no sign of farther clear SMC MS is visible other than the residuals from the MW/background field contam…
We use a new contiguous imaging survey conducted using the Dark Energy Camera to investigate the distribution and properties of young stellar populations in the Magellanic inter-Cloud region. These young stars are strongly spatially clustered, forming a narrow chain of low-mass associations that trace the densest HI gas in the Magellanic Bridge and extend, in projection, from the SMC to the outer disk of the LMC. The associations in our survey footprint have ages $\lesssim 30$ Myr, masses in the range $\sim 100-1200\,{\rm M}_\odot$, and very diffuse structures with half-light radii of up to $\…
Motivated by recent studies suggesting that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) could be significantly more massive than previously thought, we explore whether the approximation of an inertial Galactocentric reference frame is still valid in the presence of such a massive LMC. We find that previous estimates of the LMC's orbital period and apocentric distance derived assuming a fixed Milky Way are significantly shortened for models where the Milky Way is allowed to move freely in response to the gravitational pull of the LMC. Holding other parameters fixed, the fraction of models favoring first i…
Recent observational studies identified a foreground stellar sub-structure traced by red clump (RC) stars (~ 12 kpc in front of the main body) in the eastern regions of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and suggested that it formed during the formation of the Magellanic Bridge (MB), due to the tidal interaction of the Magellanic Clouds. Previous studies investigated this feature only up to 4.0 deg from the centre of the SMC due to the limited spatial coverage of the data and hence could not find a physical connection with the MB. To determine the spatial extent and properties of this foreground…
We present the results of a pilot wide-field radial velocity and metal abundance survey of red giants in ten fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The targets lie at projected distances of 0.9 and 1.9 kpc from the SMC centre ($m-M=18.79$) to the North, East, South and West. Two more fields are to the East at distances of 3.9 and 5.1 kpc. In this last field we find only a few to no SMC giants, suggesting that the edge of the SMC in this direction lies approximately at 6 kpc from its centre. In all eastern fields we observe a double peak in the radial velocities of stars, with a component …
We present the most extensive and detailed reddening maps of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) derived from the color properties of Red Clump (RC) stars. The analysis is based on the deep photometric maps from the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV), covering approximately 670 deg2 of the sky in the Magellanic System region. The resulting maps provide reddening information for 180 deg2 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 75 deg2 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), with a resolution of 1.7x1.7 arcmin in the central parts of the MCs, decreasing to approximately …
The Magellanic Clouds are nearby dwarf irregular galaxies whose morphologies show different properties when traced by different stellar populations, making them an important laboratory for studying galaxy morphologies. We study the morphology of the Magellanic Clouds using data from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). We used about $10$ and $2.5$ million sources across an area of $\sim105$ deg$^2$ and $\sim42$ deg$^2$ towards the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud (LMC and SMC), respectively. We estimated median ages of stellar populations occupying different regions of the n…
The Missing Black Hole in the Large Magellanic Cloud: A Dynamical Prediction for Its Present-Day Location
University of Wisconsin, Madison(威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校);McDonald Observatory, The University of Texas at Austin(德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校麦克唐纳天文台);AURA for ESA, Space Telescope Science Institute(欧洲空间局阿雷西博大学研究联盟太空望远镜科学研究所);Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP)(波茨坦莱布尼茨天体物理研究所)
We assemble a catalogue of Magellanic Cloud red giants from Data Release 2 of the $Gaia$ mission and, utilising machine learning methods, obtain photometric metallicity estimates for them. In doing so, we are able to chemically map the entirety of the Magellanic System at once. Our high resolution maps reveal a plethora of substructure, with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) bar and spiral arm being readily apparent. We uncover a curious spiral-like feature in the southern portion of the LMC disc, hosting relatively metal-rich giants and likely a by-product of historic encounter with the Small …
We explore the Gaia DR2 proper motions of six young, main-sequence stars, members of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) reported by Moni Bidin et al. (2017). These stars are located in the outskirts of the disk, between 7 and 13 degrees from the LMC's center where there is very low H I content. Gaia DR2 proper motions confirm that four stars formed locally, in situ, while two are consistent with being expelled via dynamical interactions from inner, more gas-rich regions of the LMC. This finding establishes that recent star formation occurred in the periphery of the LMC, where thus far only old p…
We present the first SkyMapper stellar population analysis of the Large Magellanic Cloud (hereafter LMC),including the identification of 3578 candidate Carbon Stars through their extremely red $g-r$ colours. Coupled with Gaia astrometry, we analyse the distribution and kinematics of this Carbon Star population, finding the LMC to be centred at $(R.A., Dec.) = (80.90^{\circ}\pm{0.29}, -68.74^{\circ}\pm{0.12})$, with a bulk proper motion of $(μ_α,μ_δ) = (1.878\pm0.007,0.293\pm0.018) \mathrm{mas\ yr^{-1}}$ and a disk inclination of $i = 25.6^{\circ}\pm1.1$ at position angle $θ= 135.6^{\circ}\pm 3…
We report on the spread of [Fe/H] values in the massive Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC1978, recently confirmed to harbor multiple populations of nearly the same age. We used accurate Stromgren photometry of carefully selected cluster red giant branch stars along with a high-dispersion spectroscopy-based calibration of the metallicity-sensitive index m1. Once accounting for the photometry quality, assessed from extensive artificial stars tests to trace the photometric uncertainties as a function of the position to the cluster's center as well as the stellar brightness, and those from the me…
We report the discovery of a new ultra-faint stellar system found near the Magellanic Clouds in the DECam Local Volume Exploration (DELVE) Survey. This new system, DELVE J0155$-$6815 (DELVE 2), is located at a heliocentric distance of $D_{\odot} = 71 \pm 4\text{ kpc}$, which places it at a 3D physical separation of 12 kpc from the center of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and 28 kpc from the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). DELVE 2 is identified as a resolved overdensity of old ($τ> 13.3\text{ Gyr}$) and metal-poor (${\rm [Fe/H]} = -2.0_{-0.5}^{+0.2}$ dex) stars with a projected half-l…
We consider how the gravity of the Galactic disk and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) modifies the radial motions of hypervelocity stars (HVSs) ejected from the Galactic Center. For typical HVSs ejected towards low (high) Galactic latitudes, the disk bends trajectories by up to 30 degrees (3-10 deg). For many lines-of-sight through the Galaxy, the LMC produces similar and sometimes larger deflections. Bound HVSs suffer larger deflections than unbound HVSs. Gravitational focusing by the LMC also generates a factor of two overdensity along the line-of-sight towards the LMC. With large enough sam…
We used data from the near-infrared VISTA survey of the Magellanic Cloud system (VMC) to measure proper motions (PMs) of stars within the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data analysed in this study comprise 26 VMC tiles, covering a total contiguous area on the sky of ~40 deg$^2$. Using multi-epoch observations in the Ks band over time baselines between 13 and 38 months, we calculated absolute PMs with respect to ~130,000 background galaxies. We selected a sample of ~2,160,000 likely SMC member stars to model the centre-of-mass motion of the galaxy. The results found for three different choic…
We study the morphology of the stellar periphery of the Magellanic Clouds in search of substructure using near-infrared imaging data from the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS). Based on the selection of different stellar populations using the ($J-K_\mathrm{s}$, $K_\mathrm{s}$) colour-magnitude diagram, we confirm the presence of substructures related to the interaction history of the Clouds and find new substructures on the easter side of the LMC disc which may be owing to the influence of the Milky Way, and on the northern side of the SMC, which is probably associated to the ellipsoidal structure…
We present results for an up-to-date uncatalogued star cluster projected towards the Eastern side of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) outer disc. The new object was discovered from a search of loose star cluster in the Magellanic Clouds' (MCs) outskirts using kernel density estimators on Washington CT1 deep images. Contrarily to what would be commonly expected, the star cluster resulted to be a young object (log(t /yr) = 8.45) with a slightly subsolar metal content (Z = 0.013) and a total mass of 650Mo. Its core, half-mass and tidal radii also are within the frequent values of LMC star cluster…
We present the results of N-body models of the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud system and study the kinematic reflex motion in the stellar halo owing to the barycentre displacement of the disc. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the Milky Way disc may be moving at 40 km/s relative to the barycentre prior to the Large Magellanic Cloud infall. The resulting reflex motion is visible in tangential velocities of the stellar halo as a simple dipole. The signal is strongest for stars with long dynamical times, identifiable in position-velocity data as stars with large apocentres, w…
We present a new study of the spatial distribution and ages of the star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). To detect and estimate the ages of the star clusters we rely on the new fully-automated method developed by Bitsakis et al. (2017). Our code detects 1319 star clusters in the central 18 deg$^{2}$ of the SMC we surveyed (1108 of which have never been reported before). The age distribution of those clusters suggests enhanced cluster formation around 240 Myr ago. It also implies significant differences in the cluster distribution of the bar with respect to the rest of the galaxy, …
We report the detection of four water masers within the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC); two discovered with the 70-m Tidbinbilla radio telescope, and two discovered with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Precise positions of all four masers have been derived from ATCA observations, and the characteristics of each water maser have been monitored over a period of several years. Sensitive observations towards two previously detected water masers reported in the literature failed to detect any emission. The detected water masers show evidence of higher levels of temporal variability than…
We report results of proper motions of 25 known Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) clusters (ages ~ 1 - 10 Gyr old) derived from Gaia EDR3 data sets. When these mean proper motions are gathered with existent radial velocity measurements to compose the clusters' velocity vectors, we found the parameter values of a rotation disk that best resemble their observed motions, namely: central coordinates and distance, inclination and position angle of the line-of-node, proper motion in right ascension and declination and systemic velocity, rotation velocity and velocity dispersion. The SMC cluster rotation …
We examine whether the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is currently losing its stellar halo to Milky Way (MW) tides. We present a live $N$-body model for the ongoing MW-LMC interaction that predicts a prominent stream of stars tidally stripped from the progenitor LMC. We use this model to define a strategy to search for stripped material in kinematic space. Of the available stellar tracers, we conclude that samples of RR Lyrae stars provide the highest density of kinematic tracers at present. Using a sample of RR Lyrae stars with Gaia EDR3 astrometry we show that the LMC stellar halo in the South…
We predict the distribution of hypervelocity stars (HVSs) ejected from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), under the assumption that the dwarf galaxy hosts a central massive black hole (MBH). For the majority of stars ejected from the LMC the orbital velocity of the LMC has contributed a significant fraction of their galactic rest frame velocity, leading to a dipole density distribution on the sky. We quantify the dipole using spherical harmonic analysis and contrast with the monopole expected for HVSs ejected from the Galactic Center. There is a tendril in the density distribution that leads th…
Variable stars have been used for over one hundred years as probes for determining astronomical distances; these distances can be used to map the three-dimensional (3D) structure of nearby galaxies. Exploiting the effect that moving to the mid-infrared has on Cepheid magnitudes and light curves, we can now map our nearest galaxies in 3D at fidelities never before achievable. Combining data from the OGLE-IV catalogue with mid-infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, around 5000 fundamental mode Cepheids are being used to trace the 3D structure of the Magellanic Clouds. An automated…
The Magellanic Clouds are a nearby pair of interacting dwarf galaxies and satellites of the Milky Way. Studying their kinematic properties is essential to understanding their origin and dynamical evolution. They have prominent tidal features and the kinematics of these features can give hints about the formation of tidal dwarfs, galaxy merging and the stripping of gas. In addition they are an example of dwarf galaxies that are in the process of merging with a massive galaxy. The goal of this study is to investigate the kinematics of the Magellanic Bridge, a tidal feature connecting the Magella…
We present the first gri-band period-luminosity (PL) and period-Wesenheit (PW) relations for the fundamental mode anomalous Cepheids. These PL and PW relations were derived from a combined sample of five anomalous Cepheids in globular cluster M92 and the Large Magellanic Cloud, both of which have distance accurate to ~1% available from literature. Our g-band PL relation is similar to the B-band PL relation as reported in previous study. We applied our PL and PW relations to anomalous Cepheids discovered in dwarf galaxy Crater II, and found a larger but consistent distance modulus than the rece…
We present a Bayesian analysis of the distances to 15,040 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) RR Lyrae stars using $V$- and $I$-band light curves from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, in combination with new $z$-band observations from the Dark Energy Camera. Our median individual RR Lyrae distance statistical error is 1.89 kpc (fractional distance error of 3.76 per cent). We present three-dimensional contour plots of the number density of LMC RR Lyrae stars and measure a distance to the core LMC RR Lyrae centre of ${50.2482\pm0.0546 {\rm(statistical)} \pm0.4628 {\rm(systematic)} {\rm kpc…
