The decentralized coded caching was introduced in [M.~A. Maddah-Ali and U.~Niesen, `Decentralized coded caching attains order-optimal memory-rate tradeoff,' \emph{IEEE/ACM Trans. Networking}, vol.~23, no.~4, pp. 1029--1040, Aug. 2015] in which no coordination is required for the content placement. In this paper, with $N$ files and $K$ users, first it is shown that the decentralized coded caching scheme of Ali and Niesen is optimal for $N \geq K$ using techniques from index coding. Next the case when the shared link is error prone is considered. For this case, an optimal error correcting delivery scheme is proposed for coded caching problems with decentralized placement. Expression for the worst case rate is obtained when there are finite number of transmissions in error.
The well known Maddah-Ali-Niesen (MAN) coded caching scheme for users with dedicated cache is extended for use in multi-access coded cache scheme where the number of users need not be same as the number of caches in the system. The well known MAN scheme is recoverable as a special case of the multi-access system considered. The performance of this scheme is compared with the existing works on multi-access coded caching. To be able to compare the performance of different multi-access schemes with different number of users for the same number of caches, the terminology of per user rate (rate div…
An information-theoretic lower bound is developed for the caching system studied by Maddah-Ali and Niesen. By comparing the proposed lower bound with the decentralized coded caching scheme of Maddah-Ali and Niesen, the optimal memory--rate tradeoff is characterized to within a multiplicative gap of $4.7$ for the worst case, improving the previous analytical gap of $12$. Furthermore, for the case when users' requests follow the uniform distribution, the multiplicative gap is tightened to $4.7$, improving the previous analytical gap of $72$. As an independent result of interest, for the single-u…
Multi-access coded caching schemes from cross resolvable designs (CRD) have been reported recently \cite{KNRarXiv}. To be able to compare coded caching schemes with different number of users and possibly with different number of caches a new metric called rate-per-user was introduced and it was shown that under this new metric the schemes from CRDs perform better than the Maddah-Ali-Niesen scheme in the large memory regime. In this paper a new class of CRDs is presented and it is shown that the multi-access coded caching schemes derived from these CRDs perform better than the Maddah-Ali-Niesen…
Caching is an efficient way to reduce peak-hour network traffic congestion by storing some contents at user's local cache without knowledge of later demands. Maddah-Ali and Niesen initiated a fundamental study of caching systems; they proposed a scheme (with uncoded cache placement and linear network coding delivery) that is provably optimal to within a factor 12. In this paper, by noticing that when the cache contents and the demands are fixed, the caching problem can be seen as an index coding problem, we show the optimality of Maddah-Ali and Niesen's scheme assuming that cache placement is …
Caching is a promising solution to satisfy the ongoing explosive demands for multi-media traffics. Recently, Maddah-Ali and Niesen proposed both centralized and de-centralized coded caching schemes, which are able to attain significant performance gains over uncoded caching schemes. Particular, their work indicates that there exists a performance gap between the decentralized coded caching scheme and the centralized coded caching scheme. In this paper, we investigate this gap. As a result, we prove that the multiplicative gap (i.e., the ratio of their performances) is between 1 and 1:5. The up…
Caching is a promising solution to satisfy the ever increasing demands for the multi-media traffics. In caching networks, coded caching is a recently proposed technique that achieves significant performance gains over the uncoded caching schemes. However, to implement the coded caching schemes, each file has to be split into $F$ packets, which usually increases exponentially with the number of users $K$. Thus, designing caching schemes that decrease the order of $F$ is meaningful for practical implementations. In this paper, by reviewing the Ali-Niesen caching scheme, the placement delivery ar…
A decentralized coded caching scheme based on independent random content placement has been proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, and has been shown to achieve an order-optimal memory-load tradeoff when the file size goes to infinity. It was then successively shown by Shanmugam et al. that in the practical operating regime where the file size is limited such scheme yields much less attractive load gain. In this paper, we propose a decentralized random coded caching scheme and a partially decentralized sequential coded caching scheme with different coordination requirements in the content placemen…
A major practical limitation of the Maddah-Ali-Niesen coded caching techniques is their high subpacketization level. For the simple network with a single server and multiple users, Yan \emph{et al.} proposed an alternative scheme with the so-called placement delivery arrays (PDA). Such a scheme requires slightly higher transmission rates but significantly reduces the subpacketization level. In this paper, we extend the PDA framework and propose three low-subpacketization schemes for combination networks, i.e., networks with a single server, multiple relays, and multiple cache-aided users that …
The centralized coded caching scheme is a technique proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen as a solution to reduce the network burden in peak times in a wireless system. Later Yan et al. reformulated the problem as designing a corresponding placement delivery array, and proposed two new schemes from this perspective. These schemes above significantly reduce the transmission rate $R$, compared with the uncoded caching scheme. However, to implement the new schemes, each file should be cut into $F$ pieces, where $F$ increases exponentially with the number of users $K$. Such constraint is obviously inf…
Improved lower bounds on the average and the worst-case rate-memory tradeoffs for the Maddah-Ali&Niesen coded caching scenario are presented. For any number of users and files and for arbitrary cache sizes, the multiplicative gap between the exact rate-memory tradeoff and the new lower bound is less than 2.315 in the worst-case scenario and less than 2.507 in the average-case scenario.
We consider the cache problem introduced by Maddah-ali and Niesen [1] for the $(N,K)=(3,3)$ case, and use the computer-aided approach to derive the tight linear memory-rate trade-off. Two lower bounds $10M+6R\geq 15$ and $5M+4R\geq 9$ are proved, which are non-Shannon type. A coded linear scheme of point $(M,R)=(0.6,1.5)$ is constructed with the help of symmetry reduction and brute-force search.
This paper analyzes the achievable tradeoff between cache~size and download~rate in decentralized caching systems with the uncoded cache placement originally proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen. It proposes two novel delivery schemes that take advantage of the multicasting opportunities that arise when a file is demanded by multiple users. These delivery schemes are extensions of known ones to the regime where the file size is finite. Numerical evaluations for the case of file uniform popularity show that the proposed schemes outperform previous ones for all value of the cache size.
Recent work by Maddah-Ali and Niesen introduced coded caching which demonstrated the benefits of joint design of storage and transmission policies in content delivery networks. They studied a setup where a server communicates with a set of users, each equipped with a local cache, over a shared error-free link and proposed an order-optimal caching and delivery scheme. In this paper, we introduce the problem of secretive coded caching where we impose the additional constraint that a user should not be able to learn anything, from either the content stored in its cache or the server transmissions…
The work by Maddah-Ali and Niesen demonstrated the benefits in reducing the transmission rate in a noiseless broadcast network by joint design of caching and delivery schemes. In their setup, each user learns the demands of all other users in the delivery phase. In this paper, we introduce the problem of demand private coded caching where we impose a privacy requirement that no user learns any information about the demands of other users. We provide an achievable scheme and compare its performance using the existing lower bounds on the achievable rates under no privacy setting. For this settin…
We study the problem of constructing centralized coded caching schemes with low subpacketization level based on the placement delivery array (PDA) design framework. PDA design is an efficient way to construct centralized coded caching schemes and most existing schemes, including the famous Maddah-Ali-Niesen scheme, can be described using PDA. In this paper, we first prove that constructing a PDA is equivalent to constructing three binary matrices that satisfy certain conditions. From this perspective, we then propose some new constructions of coded caching schemes using PDA design based on pro…
Coded caching is a problem where encoded broadcasts are used to satisfy users requesting popular files and having caching capabilities. Recent work by Maddah-Ali and Niesen showed that it is possible to satisfy a scaling number of users with only a constant number of broadcast transmissions by exploiting coding and caching. Unfortunately, all previous schemes required the splitting of files into an exponential number of packets before the significant coding gains of caching appeared. The question of what can be achieved with polynomial subpacketization (in the number of users) has been a centr…
This paper aims to provide an optimization framework for coded caching that accounts for various heterogeneous aspects of practical systems. An optimization theoretic perspective on the seminal work on the fundamental limits of caching by Maddah Ali and Niesen is first developed, whereas it is proved that the coded caching scheme presented in that work is the optimal scheme among a large, non-trivial family of possible caching schemes. The optimization framework is then used to develop a coded caching scheme capable of handling simultaneous non-uniform file length, non-uniform file popularity,…
A centralized coded caching scheme has been proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen to reduce the worst-case load of a network consisting of a server with access to N files and connected through a shared link to K users, each equipped with a cache of size M. However, this centralized coded caching scheme is not able to take advantage of a non-uniform, possibly very skewed, file popularity distribution. In this work, we consider the same network setting but aim to reduce the average load under an arbitrary (known) file popularity distribution. First, we consider a class of centralized coded caching s…
Building on the recent coded-caching breakthrough by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, the work here considers the $K$-user cache-aided wireless multi-antenna (MISO) symmetric broadcast channel (BC) with random fading and imperfect feedback, and analyzes the throughput performance as a function of feedback statistics and cache size. In this setting, our work identifies the optimal cache-aided degrees-of-freedom (DoF) within a factor of 4, by identifying near-optimal schemes that exploit the new synergy between coded caching and delayed CSIT, as well as by exploiting the unexplored interplay between cachi…
We consider the coded caching problem with shared caches where several users share a cache, but each user has access to only a single cache. For this network, the fundamental limits of coded caching are known for centralized and decentralized settings under uncoded placement. In the centralized case, to achieve the gains offered by coded caching, one requires a sub-packetization which increases exponentially with the number of caches. The dedicated cache networks had a similar issue, and placement delivery arrays (PDAs) were introduced as a solution to it. Using the PDA framework, we propose a…
In this paper, we consider a cache aided network in which each user is assumed to have individual caches, while upon users' requests, an update message is sent though a common link to all users. First, we formulate a general information theoretic setting that represents the database as a discrete memoryless source, and the users' requests as side information that is available everywhere except at the cache encoder. The decoders' objective is to recover a function of the source and the side information. By viewing cache aided networks in terms of a general distributed source coding problem and …
Maddah-Ali and Niesen, in a seminal paper, introduced the notion of coded caching. The exact nature of the fundamental limits in this context has remained elusive even as several approximate characterizations have been found. A new optimal scheme for the (3, 3) cache network, operating at the memory rate pair (5/3, 1/2) for the demand where all the users request for distinct files, was introduced recently to partially address this issue. In this paper, an extension of this scheme to the general (K, K) cache network, operating at the memory rate pair (K-1-1/K, 1/(K-1)), is proposed. A new lower…
We apply the coded caching scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen to a multipoint multicasting video paradigm. Partially caching the video files on the wireless devices provides an opportunity to decrease data traffic load in peak hours via sending multicast coded messages to users. In this paper, we propose a two-hop wireless network for video multicasting, where the common coded multicast message is transmitted through different single antenna Edge Nodes (ENs) to multiple antenna users. Each user can decide to decode any EN by using a zero forcing receiver. Motivated by Scalable Video Codi…
In wireless networks, coded caching is an effective technique to reduce network congestion during peak traffic times. Recently, a new concept called placement delivery array (PDA) was proposed to characterize the coded caching scheme. So far, only one class of PDAs by Maddah-Ali and Niesen is known to be optimal. In this paper, we mainly focus on constructing optimal PDAs. Firstly, we derive some lower bounds. Next, we present several infinite classes of PDAs, which are shown to be optimal with respect to the new bounds.
Coded caching scheme recently has become quite popular in the wireless network due to its effectively reducing the transmission amount (denote such an amount by $R$) during peak traffic times. However to realize a coded caching scheme, each file must be divided into $F$ packets which usually increases the computation complexity of a coded caching scheme. So we prefer to construct a caching scheme that decreases the order of $F$ for practical implementations. In this paper, we construct four classes of new schemes where two classes can significantly reduce the value of $F$ by increasing a littl…
This paper considers a hierarchical caching system where a server connects with multiple mirror sites, each connecting with a distinct set of users, and both the mirror sites and users are equipped with caching memories. Although there already exist works studying this setup and proposing coded caching scheme to reduce transmission loads, two main problems are remained to address: 1) the optimal communication load under the uncoded placement for the first hop, denoted by $R_1$, is still unknown. 2) the previous schemes are based on Maddah-Ali and Niesen's data placement and delivery, which req…
Caching is a technique to reduce the communication load in peak hours by prefetching contents during off-peak hours. An information-theoretic framework for coded caching was introduced by Maddah-Ali and Niesen in a recent work, where it was shown that significant improvement can be obtained compared to uncoded caching. Considerable efforts have been devoted to identify the precise information-theoretic fundamental limits of the coded caching systems, however the difficulty of this task has also become clear. One of the reasons for this difficulty is that the original coded caching setting allo…
A decentralized coded caching scheme has been proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, and has been shown to alleviate the load of networks. Recently, placement delivery array (PDA) was proposed to characterize the coded caching scheme. In this paper, a neural architecture is first proposed to learn the construction of PDAs. Our model solves the problem of variable size PDAs using mechanism of neural attention and reinforcement learning. It differs from the previous attempts in that, instead of using combined optimization algorithms to get PDAs, it uses sequence-to-sequence model to learn construct …
Coded caching technique is an efficient approach to reduce the transmission load in networks and has been studied in heterogeneous network settings in recent years. In this paper, we consider a new widespread caching system called $(K_1,K_2,U,r,M,N)$ two-dimensional (2D) caching-aided ultra-dense network (UDN) with a server containing $N$ files, $K_1K_2$ cache nodes arranged neatly on a grid with $K_1$ rows and $K_2$ columns, and $U$ cache-less users randomly distributed around cache nodes. Each cache node can cache at most $M\leq N$ files and has a certain service region by Euclidean distance…
Under the paradigm of caching, partial data is delivered before the actual requests of users are known. In this paper, this problem is modeled as a canonical distributed source coding problem with side information, where the side information represents the users' requests. For the single-user case, a single-letter characterization of the optimal rate region is established, and for several important special cases, closed-form solutions are given, including the scenario of uniformly distributed user requests. In this case, it is shown that the optimal caching strategy is closely related to total…
Coded caching is a technique where multicasting and coding opportunities are utilized to achieve better rate-memory tradeoff in cached networks. A crucial parameter in coded caching is subpacketization, which is the number of parts a file is to be split into for coding purposes. The original Maddah-Ali-Niesen scheme has order-optimal rate at a subpacketization growing exponentially with the number of users. In contrast, placement and delivery schemes in coded caching, designed using placement delivery arrays (PDAs), can have linear subpacketization with a penalty in rate. In this work, we prop…
Coded caching aims to minimize the network's peak-time communication load by leveraging the information pre-stored in the local caches at the users. The original single file retrieval setting by Maddah-Ali and Niesen has been recently extended to general Scalar Linear Function Retrieval (SLFR) by Wan et al., who proposed a linear scheme that surprisingly achieves the same optimal load (under the constraint of uncoded cache placement) as in single file retrieval. This paper's goal is to characterize the conditions under which a general SLFR linear scheme is optimal and gain practical insights i…
Coded caching is a technique that leverages locally cached contents at the users to reduce the network's peak-time communication load. Coded caching achieves significant performance gains compared to uncoded caching schemes and is thus a promising technique to boost performance in future networks. In the original model introduced by Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN), a server stores multiple files and is connected to multiple cache-aided users through an error-free shared link; once the local caches have been filled and all users have sent their demand to the server, the server can start sending cod…
Maddah-Ali and Niesen's original coded caching scheme for shared-link broadcast networks is now known to be optimal to within a factor two, and has been applied to other types of networks. For practical reasons, this paper considers that a server communicates to cache-aided users through $H$ intermediate relays. In particular, it focuses on combination networks where each of the $K = \binom{H}{r}$ users is connected to a distinct $r$-subsets of relays. By leveraging the symmetric topology of the network, this paper proposes a novel method to general multicast messages and to deliver them to th…
Coded Caching, proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN), has the potential to reduce network traffic by pre-storing content in the users' local memories when the network is underutilized and transmitting coded multicast messages that simultaneously benefit many users at once during peak-hour times. This paper considers the linear function retrieval version of the original coded caching setting, where users are interested in retrieving a number of linear combinations of the data points stored at the server, as opposed to a single file. This extends the scope of the Authors' past work that only c…
In the coded caching problem, as originally formulated by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, a server communicates via a noiseless shared broadcast link to multiple users that have local storage capability. In order for a user to decode its demanded file from the coded multicast transmission, the demands of all the users must be globally known, which may violate the privacy of the users. To overcome this privacy problem, Wan and Caire recently proposed several schemes that attain coded multicasting gain while simultaneously guarantee information theoretic privacy of the users' demands. In Device-to-Device…
Coded caching is a promising technique to smooth out network traffic by storing part of the library content at the users' local caches. The seminal work on coded caching for single file retrieval by Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN) showed the existence of a global caching gain that scales with the total memory in the system, in addition to the known local caching gain in uncoded systems. This paper formulates a novel cache-aided matrix multiplication retrieval problem, relevant for data analytics and machine learning applications. In the considered problem, each cache-aided user requests the produc…
Caching is an efficient way to reduce peak hour network traffic congestion by storing some contents at the user's cache without knowledge of later demands. Coded caching strategy was originally proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen to give an additional coded caching gain compared the conventional uncoded scheme. Under practical consideration, the caching model was recently considered in relay network, in particular the combination network, where the central server communicates with $K=\binom{H}{r}$ users (each is with a cache of $M$ files) through $H$ immediate relays, and each user is connected …
Caching prefetches some library content at users' memories during the off-peak times (i.e., {\it placement phase}), such that the number of transmissions during the peak-traffic times (i.e., {\it delivery phase}) are reduced. A coded caching strategy was originally proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MN) leading to a multicasting gain compared to the conventional uncoded caching, where each message in the delivery phase is useful to multiple users simultaneously. However, the MN coded caching scheme suffers from the high subpacketization which makes it impractical. In order to reduce the subpac…
This paper considers the multiaccess coded caching systems formulated by Hachem et al., including a central server containing $N$ files connected to $K$ cache-less users through an error-free shared link, and $K$ cache-nodes, each equipped with a cache memory size of $M$ files. Each user has access to $L$ neighbouring cache-nodes with a cyclic wrap-around topology. The coded caching scheme proposed by Hachem et al. suffers from the case that $L$ does not divide $K$, where the needed number of transmissions (a.k.a. load) is at most four times the load expression for the case where $L$ divides $…
Coded caching scheme, which is an effective technique to increase the transmission efficiency during peak traffic times, has recently become quite popular among the coding community. Generally rate can be measured to the transmission in the peak traffic times, i.e., this efficiency increases with the decreasing of rate. In order to implement a coded caching scheme, each file in the library must be split in a certain number of packets. And this number directly reflects the complexity of a coded caching scheme, i.e., the complexity increases with the increasing of the packet number. However ther…
In order to characterize the fundamental limit of the tradeoff between the amount of cache memory and the delivery transmission rate of multiuser caching systems, various coding schemes have been proposed in the literature. These schemes can largely be categorized into two classes, namely uncoded prefetching schemes and coded prefetching schemes. While uncoded prefetching schemes in general offer order-wise optimal performance, coded prefetching schemes often have better performance at the low cache memory regime. The significant differences in the coding components between the two classes may…
Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN) in 2014 surprisingly showed that it is possible to serve an arbitrarily large number of cache-equipped users with a constant number of transmissions by using coded caching in shared-link broadcast networks. This paper studies the tradeoff between the user's cache size and the file download time for combination networks, where users with caches communicate with the servers through intermediate relays. Motivated by the so-called separation approach, it is assumed that placement and multicast message generation are done according to the MAN original scheme and regardle…
The coded caching scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN) transmits coded multicast messages to users equipped with caches and it is known to be optimal within a constant factor. This work extends this caching scheme to two-hop relay networks with one main server with access to a library of $N$ files, and $H$ relays communicating with $K$ users with cache, each of which is connected to a random subset of relays. This topology can be considered as a generalized version of a celebrated family of networks, referred to as combination networks. Our approach is simply based on routing MAN pac…
Caching at the wireless edge nodes is a promising way to boost the spatial and spectral efficiency, for the sake of alleviating networks from content-related traffic. Coded caching originally introduced by Maddah-Ali and Niesen significantly speeds up communication efficiency by transmitting multicast messages simultaneously useful to multiple users. Most prior works on coded caching are based on the assumption that each user may request all content in the library. However, in many applications the users are interested only in a limited set of content that depends on their location. Motivated …
The idea of coded caching was introduced by Maddah-Ali and Niesen who demonstrated the advantages of coding in caching problems. To capture the essence of the problem, they introduced the $(N, K)$ canonical cache network in which $K$ users with independent caches of size $M$ request files from a server that has $N$ files. Among other results, the caching scheme and lower bounds proposed by them led to a characterization of the exact rate memory tradeoff when $M\geq \frac{N}{K}(K-1)$. These lower bounds along with the caching scheme proposed by Chen et al. led to a characterization of the exact…
Caching is a commonly used technique in content-delivery networks which aims to deliver information from hosting servers to users in the most efficient way. In 2014, Maddah-Ali and Niessen formulated caching into a formal information theoretic problem and it has gained a lot of attention since then. It is known that the caching schemes proposed by Ali-Niesen and Yu et. al. are optimal, that is, they require the least number of transmissions from the server to satisfy all users' demands. However for these schemes to work, each file needs to be partitioned into $F^*$ subfiles ($F^*$ is called th…
Caching is an efficient way to reduce network traffic congestion during peak hours by storing some content at the user's local cache memory without knowledge of later demands. For the shared-link caching model, Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN) proposed a two-phase (placement and delivery) coded caching strategy, which is order optimal within a constant factor. However, in the MAN coded caching scheme, each user can obtain the information about the demands of other users, i.e., the MAN coded caching scheme is inherently prone to tampering and spying the activity/demands of other users. In this paper…
Decentralized coded caching scheme, introduced by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, assumes that the caches are filled with no coordination. This work identifies a decentralized coded caching scheme -- under the assumption of uncoded placement -- for shared cache network, where each cache serves multiple users. Each user has access to only a single cache and the number of caches is less than or equal to the number of users. For this setting, we derive the optimal worst-case delivery time for any user-to-cache association profile where each such profile describes the number of users served by each cache. …
The technique of coded caching proposed by Madddah-Ali and Niesen is a promising approach to alleviate the load of networks during busy times. Recently, placement delivery array (PDA) was presented to characterize both the placement and delivery phase in a single array for the centralized coded caching algorithm. In this paper, we interpret PDA from a new perspective, i.e., the strong edge coloring of bipartite graph. We prove that, a PDA is equivalent to a strong edge colored bipartite graph. Thus, we can construct a class of PDAs from existing structures in bipartite graphs. The class includ…
We consider the centralized coded caching system where a library of files is available at the server and their subfiles are cached at the clients as prescribed by a placement delivery array (PDA). We are interested in the problem where a specific file in the library is replaced with a new file at the server, the contents of which are correlated with the file being replaced, and this change needs to be communicated to the caches. Upon replacement, the server has access only to the updated file and is unaware of its differences with the original, while each cache has access to specific subfiles …
A multi-access network consisting of $N$ files, $C$ caches, $K$ users with each user having access to a unique set of $r$ caches has been introduced recently by Muralidhar et al. ("Maddah-Ali-Niesen Scheme for Multi-access Coded Caching," in \textit{Proc. ITW}, 2021). It considers Single File Retrieval (SFR) i.e, each user demands an arbitrary file from the server. It proposes a coded caching scheme which was shown to be optimal under the assumption of uncoded placement by Brunero and Elia ("Fundamental Limits of Combinatorial Multi-Access Caching" in {\textit{arXiv:2110.07426} }). The above m…
This paper studies a novel multi-access coded caching (MACC) model in the two-dimensional (2D) topology, which is a generalization of the one-dimensional (1D) MACC model proposed by Hachem et al. The 2D MACC model is formed by a server containing $N$ files, $K_1\times K_2$ cache-nodes with $M$ files located at a grid with $K_1$ rows and $K_2$ columns, and $K_1\times K_2$ cache-less users where each user is connected to $L^2$ nearby cache-nodes. The server is connected to the users through an error-free shared link, while the users can retrieve the cached content of the connected cache-nodes wi…
