Using multi group asymmetric public and private keys, this paper proposes a encryption email communication system, which makes email communication more secure, lowers the service providerś network and storage consumption, and completely eliminates any spam. Prior to this, PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) partially solved the encryption problem, but it only encrypts the content of the mail. We would also expect a mail system to provide safe and reliable services, completely eliminate the spam emails, reduce the consumption of service providerś traffic and storage resources, and specially focus on protecting the user privacy and the data security of service provider.
Unsolicited email (spam) is still a problem for users of the email service. Even though current email anti-spam solutions filter most spam emails, some spam emails still are delivered to the inbox of users. A special class of spam emails advertises websites, e.g., online dating sites or online pharmacies. The success rate of this kind of advertisement is rather low, however, as sending an email does only involve minimal costs, even a very low success rate results in enough revenue such that this kind of advertisement pays off. The anti-spam approach presented in this paper aims on increasing t…
Traditional spam classification requires the end-user to reveal the content of its received email to the spam classifier which violates the privacy. Spam classification over encrypted emails enables the classifier to classify spam email without accessing the email, hence protects the privacy of email content. In this paper, we construct a spam classification framework that enables the classification of encrypted emails. Our classification model is based on a neural network with a quadratic network part and a multi-layer perception network part. The quadratic network architecture is compatible …

The popularity, cost-effectiveness and ease of information exchange that electronic mails offer to electronic device users has been plagued with the rising number of unsolicited or spam emails. Driven by the need to protect email users from this growing menace, research in spam email filtering/detection systems has being increasingly active in the last decade. However, the adaptive nature of spam emails has often rendered most of these systems ineffective. While several spam detection models have been reported in literature, the reported performance on an out of sample test data shows the room…

Anomalies in emails such as phishing and spam present major security risks such as the loss of privacy, money, and brand reputation to both individuals and organizations. Previous studies on email anomaly detection relied on a single type of anomaly and the analysis of the email body and subject content. A drawback of this approach is that it takes into account the written language of the email content. To overcome this deficit, this study conducted feature extraction and selection on email header datasets and leveraged both multi and one-class anomaly detection approaches. Experimental analys…

Machine unlearning for security is studied in this context. Several spam email detection methods exist, each of which employs a different algorithm to detect undesired spam emails. But these models are vulnerable to attacks. Many attackers exploit the model by polluting the data, which are trained to the model in various ways. So to act deftly in such situations model needs to readily unlearn the polluted data without the need for retraining. Retraining is impractical in most cases as there is already a massive amount of data trained to the model in the past, which needs to be trained again ju…

Email threat is a serious issue for enterprise security. The threat can be in various malicious forms, such as phishing, fraud, blackmail and malvertisement. The traditional anti-spam gateway often maintains a greylist to filter out unexpected emails based on suspicious vocabularies present in the email's subject and contents. However, this type of signature-based approach cannot effectively discover novel and unknown suspicious emails that utilize various evolving malicious payloads. To address the problem, in this paper, we present Holmes, an efficient and lightweight semantic based engine f…
Email breaches are commonplace, and they expose a wealth of personal, business, and political data that may have devastating consequences. The current email system allows any attacker who gains access to your email to prove the authenticity of the stolen messages to third parties -- a property arising from a necessary anti-spam / anti-spoofing protocol called DKIM. This exacerbates the problem of email breaches by greatly increasing the potential for attackers to damage the users' reputation, blackmail them, or sell the stolen information to third parties. In this paper, we introduce "non-attr…
Emails today are often encrypted, but only between mail servers---the vast majority of emails are exposed in plaintext to the mail servers that handle them. While better than no encryption, this arrangement leaves open the possibility of attacks, privacy violations, and other disclosures. Publicly, email providers have stated that default end-to-end encryption would conflict with essential functions (spam filtering, etc.), because the latter requires analyzing email text. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that there is no conflict. We do so by designing, implementing, and evaluating Pre…
In this paper, we introduce DeepQuarantine (DQ), a cloud technology to detect and quarantine potential spam messages. Spam attacks are becoming more diverse and can potentially be harmful to email users. Despite the high quality and performance of spam filtering systems, detection of a spam campaign can take some time. Unfortunately, in this case some unwanted messages get delivered to users. To solve this problem, we created DQ, which detects potential spam and keeps it in a special Quarantine folder for a while. The time gained allows us to double-check the messages to improve the reliabilit…
The security evaluation for Mail Distribution Systems focuses on certification and reliability of sensitive data between mail servers. The need to certify the information conveyed is a result of known weaknesses in the simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP). The most important consequence of these weaknesses is the possibility to mislead the recipient, which is achieved via spam (especially email spoofing). Email spoofing refers to alterations in the headers and/or the content of the message. Therefore, the authenticity of the message is compromised. Unfortunately, the broken link between certif…
One of the biggest problems with the Internet technology is the unwanted spam emails. The well disguised phishing email comes in as part of the spam and makes its entry into the inbox quite frequently nowadays. While phishing is normally considered a consumer issue, the fraudulent tactics the phishers use are now intimidating the corporate sector as well. In this paper, we analyze the various aspects of phishing attacks and draw on some possible defenses as countermeasures. We initially address the different forms of phishing attacks in theory, and then look at some examples of attacks in prac…
We examined the influence of three social engineering strategies on users' judgments of how safe it is to click on a link in an email. The three strategies examined were authority, scarcity and social proof, and the emails were either genuine, phishing or spear-phishing. Of the three strategies, the use of authority was the most effective strategy in convincing users that a link in an email was safe. When detecting phishing and spear-phishing emails, users performed the worst when the emails used the authority principle and performed best when social proof was present. Overall, users struggled…
In the era of large-scale internet scanning, misconfigured websites are a frequent cause of data leaks and security incidents. Previous research has investigated sending automated email notifications to operators of insecure or compromised websites, but has often met with limited success due to challenges in address data quality, spam filtering, and operator distrust and disinterest. While several studies have investigated the design and phrasing of notification emails in a bid to increase their effectiveness, the use of other contact channels has remained almost completely unexplored due to t…
Popular messaging applications now enable end-to-end-encryption (E2EE) by default, and E2EE data storage is becoming common. These important advances for security and privacy create new content moderation challenges for online services, because services can no longer directly access plaintext content. While ongoing public policy debates about E2EE and content moderation in the United States and European Union emphasize child sexual abuse material and misinformation in messaging and storage, we identify and synthesize a wealth of scholarship that goes far beyond those topics. We bridge literatu…
