Criticality in statistical physics naturally emerges at isolated points in the phase diagram. Jamming of spheres is not an exception: varying density, it is the critical point that separates the unjammed phase where spheres do not overlap and the jammed phase where they cannot be arranged without overlaps. The same remains true in more general constraint satisfaction problems with continuous variables (CCSP) where jamming coincides with the (protocol dependent) satisfiability transition point. In this work we show that by carefully choosing the cost function to be minimized, the region of criticality extends to occupy a whole region of the jammed phase. As a working example, we consider the spherical perceptron with a linear cost function in the unsatisfiable (UNSAT) jammed phase and we perform numerical simulations which show critical power laws emerging in the configurations obtained minimizing the linear cost function. We develop a scaling theory to compute the emerging critical exponents.
We numerically study the distributions of global pressure that are found in ensembles of statically jammed and quasistatically sheared systems of bidisperse, frictionless, disks at fixed packing fraction $ϕ$ in two dimensions. We use these distributions to address the question of how pressure increases as $ϕ$ increases above the jamming point $ϕ_J$, $p\sim |ϕ- ϕ_J|^y$. For statically jammed ensembles, our results are consistent with the exponent $y$ being simply related to the power law of the interparticle soft-core interaction. For sheared systems, however, the value of $y$ is consistent wit…
We investigate the properties of local minima of the energy landscape of a continuous non-convex optimization problem, the spherical perceptron with piecewise linear cost function and show that they are critical, marginally stable and displaying a set of pseudogaps, singularities and non-linear excitations whose properties appear to be in the same universality class of jammed packings of hard spheres. The piecewise linear perceptron problem appears as an evolution of the purely linear perceptron optimization problem that has been recently investigated in [1]. Its cost function contains two non…
We determine the linear viscoelastic response of jammed packings of athermal repulsive viscous spheres, a model for emulsions, wet foams, and soft colloidal suspensions. We numerically measure the complex shear modulus, a fundamental characterization of the response, and demonstrate that low frequency response displays dynamic critical scaling near unjamming. Viscoelastic shear response is governed by the relaxational eigenmodes of a packing. We use scaling arguments to explain the distribution of eigenrates, which develops a divergence at unjamming. We then derive the critical exponents chara…
It has been well established that particulate systems show the jamming transition and critical scaling behaviors associated with it. However, our knowledge is limited to (nearly) monodisperse systems. Recently, a binary mixture of jammed particles with large size dispersity was studied, and it was suggested that two distinct jammed phases appeared. Here, we conduct a thorough numerical study on this system with a special focus on the statistics of and finite-size effects on the fraction of small particles that participate in the rigid network. We present strong evidence that two distinct jamme…
Despite decades of intense study, the mechanisms underlying the extraordinary dynamics of supercooled liquids as they approach the glass transition remain, at best, mis-characterized, and at worst, misunderstood. A long standing endeavor is to understand the remarkable increase of the viscosity with supercooling. Recently, a new theory of supercooled liquids has been proposed that starts from first principles, using elementary statistical mechanics arguments, to derive a form for the viscosity that contains only a single fitting parameter in its simplest form. In this we demonstrate that this …

In this Letter, we analyze the quantum dynamics of the perceptron model: a particle is constrained on a $N$-dimensional sphere, with $N\to \infty$, and subjected to a set of randomly placed hard-wall potentials. This model has several applications, ranging from learning protocols to the effective description of the dynamics of an ensemble of infinite-dimensional hard spheres in Euclidean space. We find that the jamming transition with quantum dynamics shows critical exponents different from the classical case. We also find that the quantum jamming transition, unlike the typical quantum critica…
When we elastically impose a homogeneous, affine deformation on amorphous solids, they also undergo an inhomogeneous, non-affine deformation, which can have a crucial impact on the overall elastic response. To correctly understand the elastic modulus $M$, it is therefore necessary to take into account not only the affine modulus $M_A$, but also the non-affine modulus $M_N$ that arises from the non-affine deformation. In the present work, we study the bulk ($M=K$) and shear ($M=G$) moduli in static jammed particulate packings over a range of packing fractions $φ$. One novelty of this work is to…
Jamming criticality defines a universality class that includes systems as diverse as glasses, colloids, foams, amorphous solids, constraint satisfaction problems, neural networks, etc. A particularly interesting feature of this class is that small interparticle forces ($f$) and gaps ($h$) are distributed according to nontrivial power laws. A recently developed mean-field (MF) theory predicts the characteristic exponents of these distributions in the limit of very high spatial dimension, $d\rightarrow\infty$ and, remarkably, their values seemingly agree with numerical estimates in physically re…
We perform a systematic numerical study of the effects of the particle-size ratio $R \ge 1$ on the properties of jammed binary mixtures. We find that changing $R$ does not qualitatively affect the critical scaling of the pressure and coordination number with the compression near the jamming transition, but the critical volume fraction at the jamming transition varies with $R$. Moreover, the static structure factor (density correlation) $S(k)$ strongly depends on $R$ and shows distinct long wave-length behaviors between large and small particles. Thus the previously reported behavior of $S(k)\s…
We study the problem of determining the capacity of the binary perceptron for two variants of the problem where the corresponding constraint is symmetric. We call these variants the rectangle-binary-perceptron (RPB) and the $u-$function-binary-perceptron (UBP). We show that, unlike for the usual step-function-binary-perceptron, the critical capacity in these symmetric cases is given by the annealed computation in a large region of parameter space (for all rectangular constraints and for narrow enough $u-$function constraints, $K<K^*$). We prove this fact (under two natural assumptions) using t…
We study a well known machine learning model -the perceptron- as a simple model of jamming of hard objects. We exhibit two regimes: 1) a convex optimisation regime where jamming is hypostatic and non-critical. 2) a non convex optimisation regime where jamming is isostatic and critical. We characterise the critical jamming phase through exponents describing the distributions law of forces and gaps. Surprisingly we find that these exponents coincide with the corresponding ones recently computed in high dimensional hard spheres. In addition, modifying the perceptron to a random linear programming…
The weight space of the Ising perceptron in which a set of random patterns is stored is examined using the generating function of the partition function $ϕ(n)=(1/N)\log [Z^n]$ as the dimension of the weight vector $N$ tends to infinity, where $Z$ is the partition function and $[ ... ]$ represents the configurational average. We utilize $ϕ(n)$ for two purposes, depending on the value of the ratio $α=M/N$, where $M$ is the number of random patterns. For $α< α_{\rm s}=0.833 ...$, we employ $ϕ(n)$, in conjunction with Parisi's one-step replica symmetry breaking scheme in the limit of $n \to 0$, to…
Recent theoretical advances offer an exact, first-principle theory of jamming criticality in infinite dimension as well as universal scaling relations between critical exponents in all dimensions. For packings of frictionless spheres near the jamming transition, these advances predict that nontrivial power-law exponents characterize the critical distribution of (i) small inter-particle gaps and (ii) weak contact forces, both of which are crucial for mechanical stability. The scaling of the inter-particle gaps is known to be constant in all spatial dimensions $d$ -- including the physically rel…
We present a novel mechanism for the anomalous behaviour of the specific heat in low-temperature amorphous solids. The analytic solution of a mean-field model belonging to the same universality class as high-dimensional glasses, the spherical perceptron, suggests that there exists a crossover temperature above which the specific heat scales linearly with temperature while below it a cubic scaling is displayed. This relies on two crucial features of the phase diagram: (i) The marginal stability of the free-energy landscape, which induces a gapless phase responsible for the emergence of a power-…
