The Galactic transient black hole candidate H 1743--322 exhibited a long duration outburst in 2003 after more than two and a half decades of inactivity. The 2003 event was extensively studied in multi-wavelength bands by many groups. The striking feature is that the total energy released is extremely high as compared to that in tens of outbursts which followed. In this paper, we look at this event and study both the spectral and temporal properties of the source using two component advective flow (TCAF) paradigm. We extract accretion flow parameters for each observation from spectral properties of the decay phase and determine the mass of the black hole. We computed the energy released during all the known outbursts since 2003 and showed that on an average, the energy release in an outburst is proportional to the duration of the quiescent state just prior to it, with the exception of the 2004 outburst. A constant rate of supply of matter from the companion cannot explain the energy release in 2004 outburst. However, if the energy release of 2003 is incomplete and the leftover is released in 2004, then the companion's rate of matter supply can be constant since 1977 till date. We believe that erratic behaviour of viscosity at the accumulation radius $X_p$ of matter as well as location the $X_p$ itself, rather than the random variation of mass transfer rate from the companion, could be responsible for non-uniformity in outburst pattern. We discuss several factors on which the waiting time and duration of the next outburst could depend.
Simulations on the collision between debris stream and outer dusty torus: a possible channel for forming fast-rise and long-delayed radio outburst in tidal disruption events
After showing four outbursts spaced by $\sim 1$ year from 2009 to 2012, the hyper luminous X-ray source ESO 243-49 HLX-1, currently the best intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) candidate, showed an outburst in 2013 delayed by more than a month. In Lasota et al. (2011), we proposed that the X-ray lightcurve is the result of enhanced mass transfer episodes at periapsis from a donor star orbiting the IMBH in a highly eccentric orbit. In this scenario, the delay can be explained only if the orbital parameters can change suddenly from orbit to orbit. To investigate this, we ran Newtonian smooth par…
Here we report on Swift and Suzaku observations near the end of an outburst from the black hole transient 4U 1630-47 and Chandra observations when the source was in quiescence. 4U 1630-47 made a transition from a soft state to the hard state ~50 d after the main outburst ended. During this unusual delay, the flux continued to drop, and one Swift measurement found the source with a soft spectrum at a 2-10 keV luminosity of L = 1.07e35 erg/s for an estimated distance of 10 kpc. While such transients usually make a transition to the hard state at L/Ledd = 0.3-3%, where Ledd is the Eddington lumin…
We report on two years of flux and spin evolution monitoring of 1E 1048.1$-$5937, a 6.5-s X-ray pulsar identified as a magnetar. Using {\it Swift} XRT data, we observed an X-ray outburst consisting of an increase in the persistent 1--10 keV flux by a factor of 6.3$\pm$0.2, beginning on 2011 December 31 (MJD 55926). Following a delay of $\sim100$ days, the magnetar entered a period of large torque variability, with $\dotν$ reaching a factor of $4.55\pm0.05$ times the nominal value, before decaying in an oscillatory manner over a time scale of months. We show by comparing to previous outbursts f…

Aims. In this work we re-investigated the empirical relation between the hard X-ray peak flux and the outburst waiting time found previously in the black hole transient GX 339-4. We tested the relation using the observed hard X-ray peak flux of the 2007 outburst of GX 339-4, clarified issues about faint flares, and estimated the lower limit of hard X-ray peak flux for the next outburst. Methods. We included Swift/BAT data obtained in the past four years. Together with the CGRO/BATSE and RXTE/HEXTE light curves, the observations used in this work cover a period of 18 years. Results. The observa…
Galactic black hole candidate (BHC) GX~339-4 underwent several outbursting phases in the past two and a half decades at irregular intervals of $2-3$ years. Nature of these outbursts in terms of the duration, number of peaks, maximum peak intensity, etc. varies. We present a possible physical reason behind the variation of outbursts. From a physical point of view, if the supply of matter from the companion is roughly constant, the total energy release in an outburst is expected to be proportional to the quiescence period prior to the outburst when the matter is accumulated. We use archival data…
We derive and investigate the dispersion relation for accretion disks with retarded or advanced heating. We follow the alpha-prescription but allow for a time offset (τ) between heating and pressure perturbations, as well as for a diminished response of heating to pressure variations. We study in detail solutions of the dispersion relation for disks with radiation-pressure fraction 1 - β. For τ<0 (delayed heating) the number and sign of real solutions for the growth rate depend on the values of the time lag and the ratio of heating response to pressure perturbations, ξ. If the delay is larger …
Analysis of comprehensive monitoring of 34 gamma-ray bright quasars, BL Lac objects, and radio galaxies reveals a close connection between events in the millimeter-wave emission imaged with the VLBA at 43 GHz and flares at gamma-ray and lower frequencies. Roughly 2/3 of the flares are coincident with the appearance of a new superluminal knot and/or a flare in the millimeter-wave "core'" located parsecs from the central engine. This presents a theoretical challenge to explain how the gamma-ray flux can often be variable on intra-day time-scales. Possible answers to this include very narrow open…
We present timing, spectral, and long-term temporal analysis of the high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) 4U 1036-56 using INTEGRAL and Swift observations. We show that it is a weak hard X-ray source spending a major fraction of the time in quiescence, and only occasionally characterized by X-ray outbursts. The outburst activity we report here lasts several days, with a dynamic range spanned by the luminosity in quiescence and in outburst as high as ~30. We report the detection of pulse period at 854.75+/-4.39 s during an outburst, which is consistent with previous measurements. Finally, we analyze th…
We investigated the relation between compact jet emission and X-ray variability properties of all black hole transients with multiwavelength coverage during their outburst decays. We studied the evolution of all power spectral components (including low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations), and related this evolution to changes in jet properties tracked by radio and infrared observations. We grouped sources according to their tracks in radio/X-ray luminosity relation, and show that the standards show stronger broadband X-ray variability than outliers at a given X-ray luminosity when the compa…
The Galactic black hole candidate (BHC) 4U~1630-472 has gone through several outbursts (13 to be particular) in the last two and a half decades starting from the RXTE era till date. Like the outbursts of other transient BHCs, the outbursts of this source show variations in duration, peak numbers, highest peak flux, etc. However, unlike any other soft X-ray transients, this source showed outbursts of two types, such as normal and super. The normal outbursts of duration $\sim 100-200$~days are observed quasi periodically at an average recurrence/quiescence period of $\sim 500$~days. The super ou…
We have investigated the outburst properties of low-mass X-ray binary transients (LMXBTs) based on a comprehensive study of the outbursts observed in the past few decades. The outburst rates were estimated based on the X-ray monitoring data from Swift/BAT, RXTE/ASM and MAXI, and previous reports in the literature. We found that almost all LMXBTs with the orbital period below $\sim$12 hr showed only one outburst in these observations. There are systematic difference in the outburst rate between long-period ($P_{\rm orb} \gtrsim$ 12 hr) and short-period ($P_{\rm orb} \lesssim$ 12 hr) systems. We…
This paper considers the yielding response of a neutron star crust to smooth, unbalanced Maxwell stresses imposed at the core-crust boundary, and the coupling of the dynamic crust to the external magnetic field. Stress buildup and yielding in a magnetar crust is a global phenomenon: an elastic distortion radiating from one plastically deforming zone is shown to dramatically increase the creep rate in distant zones. Runaway creep to dynamical rates is shown to be possible, being enhanced by in situ heating and suppressed by thermal conduction and shearing of an embedded magnetic field. A global…
We present both timing and spectral analysis of the outburst of 4U 0115+63 in April -- May 2008 with INTEGRAL and RXTE observations. We have determined the spin period of the neutron star at $\sim 3.61430 \pm 0.00003$ s, and a spin up rate during the outburst of $\dot{P}=(-7.24 \pm 0.03)\times10^{-6} {\rm s d^{-1}}$, the angle of periapsis $ω=48.67^\circ \pm 0.04^\circ$ in 2008 and its variation (apsidal motion) $\dotω = 0.048^\circ \pm 0.003^\circ {\rm yr}^{-1}$. We also confirm the relation of spin-up torque versus luminosity in this source during the giant outburst. The hard X-ray spectral …
We present a study of correlations between spectral and timing parameters for a sample of black hole X-ray binary candidates. Data are taken from GX 339-4, H 1743-322, and XTE J1650-500, as the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observed complete outbursts of these sources. In our study we investigate outbursts that happened before the end of 2009 to make use of the high-energy coverage of the HEXTE detector and select observations that show a certain type of quasi-periodic oscillations (type-C QPOs). The spectral parameters are derived using the empirical convolution model simpl to model the …
We analyzed RXTE/PCA and HEXTE data of the transient black hole binary GX 339-4, col- lected over a time span of eight years. We studied the properties and the behavior of low frequency quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) as a function of the integrated broad-band variability and the spectral parameters during four outbursts (2002, 2004, 2007, 2010). Most of the QPOs could be classified following the ABC classification that has been proposed before. Our results show that the ABC classification can be extended to include spectral dependencies and that the three QPO types have indeed intrinsicall…
We measure the duty cycles for an existing sample of well observed, nearby dwarf novae using data from AAVSO, and present a quantitative empirical relation between the duty cycle of dwarf novae outbursts and the X-ray luminosity of the system in quiescence. We have found that $\log DC=0.63(\pm0.21)\times(\log L_{X}({\rm erg\,s^{-1}})-31.3)-0.95(\pm0.1)$, where DC stands for duty cycle. We note that there is intrinsic scatter in this relation greater than what is expected from purely statistical errors. Using the dwarf nova X-ray luminosity functions from \citet{Pretorius12} and \citet{Byckling…
