Let the matrix operator $L = D\partial_{xx} + q(x)A_0$, with $D = diag(1, ν)$, $ν \neq 1$, $q \in L^{\infty} (0, $π$)$, and $A_0$ is a Jordan block of order 1. We analyze the boundary null controllability for system $y_t - Ly = 0$. When $ ν\notin \mathbb{Q} ^*_+ $ and $q(x) = 1$, $x $\in$ (0, $π$)$, there exists a family of root vectors of $(L * , D(L *)) $ forming a Riesz basis, moreover, F. Ammar Khodja, A.Benabdallah, M.Gonzalez-Burgos, L.Teresa, show the existence of a minimal time of control depending on condensation of eigenvalues of $(L^* , D(L^*))$. But there exists $q \in L^{\infty} (0, $π$)$ such that the family of eigenfunctions of $(L^* , D(L^*))$ is complete but it is not a Riesz basis. In this framework new phenomena arise : simultaneous condensation of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. We prove the existence of a minimal time $T_0 \in [0, +\infty]$ depending on the condensation of eigenvalues and associated eigenfunctions of $(L^* , D(L^*))$, such that the corresponding system is null controllable at any time $T > T_0$ and is not if $T < T_0$.
An explicit saturating set consisting of eigenfunctions of Stokes operator in general 3D Cylinders is proposed. The existence of saturating sets implies the approximate controllability for Navier--Stokes equations in $\rm 3D$ Cylinders under Lions boundary conditions.
For $α\in (0,2)$ we study the null controllability of the parabolic operator $$Pu= u_t - (\vert x \vert ^αu_x)_x\qquad (1<x<1),$$ which degenerates at the interior point $x=0$, for locally distributed controls acting only one side of the origin (that is, on some interval $(a,b)$ with $0<a<b<1$). Our main results guarantees that $P$ is null controllable if and only if it is weakly degenerate, that is, $α\in (0,1)$. So, in order to steer the system to zero, one needs controls to act on both sides of the point of degeneracy in the strongly degenerate case $α\in [1,2)$. Our approach is based on sp…
We prove that the multidimensional Schrödinger equation is exactly controllable in infinite time near any point which is a finite linear combination of eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger operator. We prove that, generically with respect to the potential, the linearized system is controllable in infinite time. Applying the inverse mapping theorem, we prove the controllability of the nonlinear system.
In [15] we proposed a set of sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of a discrete-spectrum bilinear Schrödinger equation. These conditions are expressed in terms of the controlled potential and of the eigenpairs of the uncontrolled Schrödinger operator. The aim of this paper is to show that these conditions are generic with respect to the uncontrolled and the controlled potential, denoted respectively by $V$ and $W$. More precisely, we prove that the Schrödinger equation is approximately controllable generically with respect to $W$ when $V$ is fixed and also generically with…
We obtain sharp convergence rates, using Dirichlet correctors, for solutions of wave equations in a bounded domain with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. The results are used to prove the exact boundary controllability that is uniform in $ε$ - the scale of the microstructure, for the projection of solutions to the subspace generated by the eigenfunctions with eigenvalues less that $Cε^{-1/2}$.
We consider a one dimensional transport equation with varying vector field and a small viscosity coefficient, controlled by one endpoint of the interval. We give upper and lower bounds on the minimal time needed to control to zero, uniformly in the vanishing viscosity limit. We assume that the vector field varies on the whole interval except at one point. The upper/lower estimates we obtain depend on geometric quantities such as an Agmon distance and the spectral gap of an associated semiclassical Schr{ö}dinger operator. They improve, in this particular situation, the results obtained in the c…
In this paper, we consider a linear hybrid system which is composed of $N+1$ non-homogeneous thin rods connected by $N$ interior-point masses with a Dirichlet boundary condition on the left end, and Dirichlet control on the right end. Using a detailed spectral analysis and the moment theory, we prove that this system is null controllable at any positive time $T$. To this end, firstly, we implement the Wronskian technique to obtain the characteristic equation for the eigenvalues $(λ_{n})_{n\in\N^*}$ associated with this system. Secondly, we provide that the eigenvalues $(λ_{n})_{n\in\N^*}$ inte…
We consider the anisotropic Shubin operators $(-Δ)^m + \vert x\vert^{2k}$ acting on the space $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$, with $k, m \geq1$ some positive integers. We provide sharp quantitative estimates in Gelfand-Shilov spaces for the eigenfunctions of these selfadjoint differential operators, that is, exponential decay estimates both for these functions and their Fourier transforms in $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$. The strategy implemented is based on the classical approach to obtain Agmon estimates in spectral theory. By using a Weyl law for the eigenvalues of the anisotropic Shubin operators, we also descri…
We consider a $n \times n$ nonlinear reaction-diffusion system posed on a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$. This system models reversible chemical reactions. We act on the system through $m$ controls ($1 \leq m < n$), localized in some arbitrary nonempty open subset $ω$ of the domain $Ω$. We prove the local exact controllability to nonnegative (constant) stationary states in any time $T >0$. A specificity of this control system is the existence of some invariant quantities in the nonlinear dynamics that prevents controllability from happening in the whole space $L^\infty(Ω)^n$. The …
This work is devoted to the study of uncertainty principles for finite combinations of Hermite functions. We establish some spectral inequalities for control subsets that are thick with respect to some unbounded densities growing almost linearly at infinity, and provide quantitative estimates, with respect to the energy level of the Hermite functions seen as eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator, for the constants appearing in these spectral estimates. These spectral inequalities allow to derive the null-controllability in any positive time for evolution equations enjoying specific regular…
In [14] Duca and Nersesyan proved a small-time controllability property of nonlinear Schrödinger equations on a d-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. In this paper we study a similar property, in the linear setting, starting from a closed Riemannian manifold. We then focus on the 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$, which models the bilinear control of a rotating linear top: as a corollary, we obtain the approximate controllability in arbitrarily small times among particular eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of $S^2$.
We consider two dimensional Grushin Schrödinger equation posed on a finite cylinder $Ω=(-1,1)_x\times \T_y$ with Dirichlet boundary condition. We obtain the sharp observability by any horizontal strip, with the optimal time $T_*>0$ depending on the size of the strip. Consequently, we prove the exact controllability for Grushin Schrödinger equation. By exploiting the concentration of eigenfunctions of harmonic oscillator at $x=0$, we also show that the observability fails for any $T\leq T_*$.
In this article, we study the boundary null-controllability properties of the one-dimensional linearized (around $(Q_0,V_0)$ with constants $Q_0>0, V_0>0$) compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the interval $(0,1)$ when a control function is acting either on the density or velocity component at one end of the interval. We first prove that the linearized system, with a Dirichlet boundary control on the density component and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on the velocity component, is null-controllable in $H^s_{per}(0,1) \times L^2(0,1)$ for any $s > 1/2$ provided the time $T > 1$, …
This article is concerned with quantitative unique continuation estimates for equations involving a "sum of squares" operator $\mathcal{L}$ on a compact manifold $\mathcal{M}$ assuming: $(i)$ the Chow-Rashevski-Hörmander condition ensuring the hypoellipticity of $\mathcal{L}$, and $(ii)$ the analyticity of $\mathcal{M}$ and the coefficients of $\mathcal{L}$. The first result is the tunneling estimate $\|φ\|_{L^2(ω)} \geq Ce^{- λ^{\frac{k}{2}}}$ for normalized eigenfunctions $φ$ of $\mathcal{L}$ from a nonempty open set $ω\subset \mathcal{M}$, where $k$ is the hypoellipticity index of $\mathcal…
Some recent works have shown that the heat equation posed on the whole Euclidean space is null-controllable in any positive time if and only if the control subset is a thick set. This necessary and sufficient condition for null-controllability is linked to some uncertainty principles as the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem which give limitations on the simultaneous concentration of a function and its Fourier transform. In the present work, we prove new uncertainty principles for finite combinations of Hermite functions and establish an analogue of the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem with an explicit contro…
We consider a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ (possibly with boundary) and $Σ\subset M\setminus \partial M$ an interior hypersurface (possibly with boundary). We study observation and control from $Σ$ for both the wave and heat equations. For the wave equation, we prove controllability from $Σ$ in time $T$ under the assumption $(\mathcal{T}GCC)$ that all generalized bicharacteristics intersect $Σ$ transversally in the time interval $(0,T)$. For the heat equation we prove unconditional controllability from $Σ$. As a result, we obtain uniform lower bounds for the Cauchy data of Laplace eigenfunc…
We prove a microlocal lower bound on the mass of high energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on compact surfaces of negative curvature, and more generally on surfaces with Anosov geodesic flows. This implies controllability for the Schrödinger equation by any nonempty open set, and shows that every semiclassical measure has full support. We also prove exponential energy decay for solutions to the damped wave equation on such surfaces, for any nontrivial damping coefficient. These results extend previous works [arXiv:1705.05019], [arXiv:1712.02692], which considered the setting of surfaces of c…
We consider a transport equation by a gradient vector field with a small viscous perturbation --$εΔ_g$. We study uniform observability (resp. controllability) properties in the (singular) vanishing viscosity limit $ε\rightarrow 0^+$, that is, the possibility of having a uniformly bounded observation constant (resp. control cost). We prove with a series of examples that in general, the minimal time for uniform observability may be much larger than the minimal time needed for the observability of the limit equation $ε= 0$. We also prove that the two minimal times coincides for positive solutions…
This study focuses on the exact observability of a non-classical Euler-Bernoulli micro-beam equation. This non-classical model was derived based on the strain gradient elasticity theory, which is intended to explain the phenomenon of size effect at the micron scale. Spectral properties of the corresponding state operator are studied; an asymptotic expression for eigenvalues is calculated, and eigenfunctions are analyzed in order to check the necessary conditions for the exact observability of the system. By examining the eigenfunctions, it is shown that among non-collocated boundary outputs, o…
