We investigate the flow around an oscillating nearly-spherical particle at low, yet non-vanishing, Reynolds numbers, and the potential resulting locomotion. We analytically demonstrate that no net motion can arise up to order one in Re and order one in the asphericity parameter, regardless of the particle's shape. Therefore, geometry-induced acoustic streaming propulsion, if any, must arise at higher order.
The energy extraction and vortex dynamics from the sinusoidal heaving and pitching motion of an elliptical hydrofoil is explored through large-eddy simulations (LES) at a Reynolds number of $50,000$. The LES is able to capture the time-dependent vortex shedding and dynamic stall properties of the foil as it undergoes high relative angles of attack. Results of the computations are validated against experimental flume data in terms of power extraction and leading edge vortex (LEV) position and trajectory. The kinematics for optimal efficiency are found in the range of heave amplitude $h_o/c=0.5-…
We investigate the instabilities and transition mechanisms of Boussinesq stratified boundary layers on sloping boundaries when subjected to oscillatory body forcing parallel to the slope. Such conditions are typical of the boundary layers generated by low wavenumber internal tides sloshing up and down adiabatic abyssal slopes in the absence of mean flows, high wavenumber internal tides, and resonant tide-bathymetry interactions. We examine flows within a region of non-dimensional parameter space typical of the mid- to low-latitude oceanic $M_2$ tides on hydraulically smooth abyssal slopes by d…
For present study, setting Strouhal Number (St) as control parameter, numerical simulations for flow past oscillating NACA-0012 airfoil at 1,000 Reynolds Numbers (Re) are performed. Temporal profiles of unsteady forces; lift and thrust, and their spectral analysis clearly indicate the solution to be a period-1 attractor for low Strouhal numbers. This study reveals that aerodynamic forces produced by plunging airfoil are independent of initial kinematic conditions of airfoil that proves the existence of limit cycle. Frequencies present in the oscillating lift force are composed of fundamental (…
Bio-inspired oscillatory foil propulsion has the ability to traverse various propulsive modes by dynamically changing the foil's heave and pitch kinematics. This research characterizes the propulsion properties and wake dynamics of a symmetric oscillating foil, specifically targeting the high Reynolds number operation of small to medium surface vessels whose propulsive specifications have a broad range of loads and speeds. An unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver with a k-$ω$ SST turbulence model is used to sweep through pitch amplitude and frequency at two heave amplitudes o…
The present study reports on flow past airfoils (stationary and moving) using sharp interface immersed-boundary approach. Non-boundary conforming approach like immersed-boundary method offers a viable alternative over traditional boundary conforming approach by allowing us to model flow past arbitrarily complex shapes, by eliminating the need to re-grid the flow domain as the body exhibits motion. We present flow past a NACA 0012 airfoil at stationary conditions as well as exhibiting pitching motion. Evolution of vortex dynamics and wake structures are presented to show that the developed shar…
An inclined gravity-driven soap film channel was used to study the wake patterns formed behind a transversely oscillating cylinder at $Re =235 \pm 14$. The natural frequency of vortex shedding from a stationary cylinder, $f_{\text{St}}$, was used to identify the oscillation frequencies of interest. The (dimensionless) frequency, $f^*=f/{f_{\text{St}}}$, and amplitude, $A^*=A/D$, of the cylinder's motion was varied over a large portion of the fundamental synchronization region (i.e., for $f^* \approx 1$), and a `map' of wake patterns was constructed in ${(f^*, A^*)}$ space. Lock-on between the …
The present study investigates unsteady wake dynamics in flow past oscillating cylinder. Two-dimensional computational study is carried out for flow past sinusoidally oscillating cylinder. Operating parameters like Reynolds number, forcing frequency, amplitude and wavelength are systematically varied and their effect on wake dynamics is investigated. Lift and drag coefficients are plotted with cylinder position to characterize the flow. Further, flow field is investigated using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). Time-resolved vorticity contours are obtained. These results are then processe…
The changes of a turbulent channel flow subjected to oscillations of wall flush-mounted rigid discs are studied by means of direct numerical simulations. The Reynolds number is $R_τ$=$180$, based on the friction velocity of the stationary-wall case and the half channel height. The primary effect of the wall forcing is the sustained reduction of wall-shear stress, which reaches a maximum of 20%. A parametric study on the disc diameter, maximum tip velocity, and oscillation period is presented, with the aim to identify the optimal parameters which guarantee maximum drag reduction and maximum net…
Pumping at low Reynolds number is a ubiquitously encountered feature, both in biological organisms and engineered devices. Generating net flow requires the presence of an asymmetry in the system, which traditionally comes from geometric flow rectifiers. Here, we study a valveless system of $N$ oscillating pumps in series, where the asymmetry comes not from the geometry but from time, that is the phase shifts between the pumps. Experimental and theoretical results are in very good agreement. We provide the optimal phase shifts leading to the maximal net flow in the continuous $N\rightarrow \inf…
In this paper it is shown that the location of the characteristic overshoot of the Richardson's annular effect changes with the Kinematic Reynolds number $ω^*=ωr_0^2 /ν$ in the range of frequencies within the laminar regime. From the study of the Richardson's overshoot at different times it was identified the existence of aparent transverse damped waves similar to those ones observed in the famous Stokes second problem, the physical analysis of this waves was used for the establishment of a semi-empirical law that gives the functional relation of the mean overshoot maximum with the kinematic r…
The presence of a no-slip, impermeable, adiabatic, sloped boundary in an otherwise quiescent, stably stratified, Boussinesq flow generates baroclinic vorticity within a diffusive boundary layer. Such conditions are typical of the oscillating boundary layers on adiabatic abyssal slopes, sloped lake bathymetry, and sloped coastal bathymetry in the absence of high-wavenumber internal waves, mean flows, far-field turbulence on larger scales, and resonant tidal-bathymetric interaction. We investigate the linear stability of the oscillating flow within non-dimensional parameter space typical of the …
Getting inspired from swimming natural species, a lot of research is being carried out in the field of unmanned underwater vehicles. During the last two decades, more emphasis on the associated hydrodynamic mechanisms, structural dynamics, control techniques and, its motion and path planning has been prominently witnessed in the literature. Considering the importance of the involved acoustic mechanisms, we focus on the quantification of flow noise produced by an oscillating hydrofoil here employed as a kinematic model for fish or its relevant appendages. In our current study, we perform numeri…
In Stokes flow, Purcell's scallop theorem forbids objects with time-reversible (reciprocal) swimming strokes from moving. In the presence of inertia, this restriction is eased and reciprocally deforming bodies can swim. A number of recent works have investigated dimer models that swim reciprocally at intermediate Reynolds numbers Re ~ 1-1000. These show interesting results (e.g. switches of the swim direction as a function of inertia) but the results vary and seem to be case-specific. Here, we introduce a general model and investigate the behaviour of an asymmetric spherical dimer of oscillati…
We consider small oscillations of micro-particles and gaseous bubbles in viscous fluid around equilibrium states under the action of a sinusoidal external force. Exact solutions to the governing integro-differential equations containing both Stokes and memory-integral drag forces are obtained. The main aim of this study is to clarify the influence of the memory-integral drag force on the resonance characteristics of oscillating particles or gaseous bubbles in a viscous fluid at small Reynolds numbers. The resonant curves (amplitude versus frequency of external force), as well as phase-frequenc…
The swimming of an assembly of rigid spheres immersed in a viscous fluid of infinite extent is studied in low Reynolds number hydrodynamics. The instantaneous swimming velocity and rate of dissipation are expressed in terms of the time-dependent displacements of sphere centers about their collective motion. For small amplitude swimming with periodically oscillating displacements, optimization of the mean swimming speed at given mean power leads to an eigenvalue problem involving a velocity matrix and a power matrix. The corresponding optimal stroke permits generalization to large amplitude mot…
The flow past inline oscillating rectangular cylinders is studied numerically at a Reynolds number representative of two-dimensional flow. A symmetric mode, known as S-II, consisting of a pair of oppositely-signed vortices on each side, observed recently in experiments, is obtained computationally. A new symmetric mode, named here as S-III, is also found. At low oscillation amplitudes, the vortex shedding pattern transitions from antisymmetric to symmetric smoothly via a regime of intermediate phase. At higher amplitudes, this intermediate regime is chaotic. The finding of chaos extends and co…
The flow past a bullet-shaped blunt body moving in a pipe is investigated through global linear stability analysis (LSA) and direct numerical simulation (DNS). A cartography of the bifurcation curves is provided thanks to LSA, covering the range of parameters corresponding to Reynolds number $Re = [50-110]$, confinement ratio $a/A = [ 0.01 - 0.92]$ and length-to-diameter ratio $L/d = [ 2-10]$. Results show that the first bifurcation is always a steady bifurcation associated to a non-oscillating eigenmode with azimuthal wavenumber $m=\pm 1$ leading to a steady state with planar symmetry. For we…
We describe experiments and simulations demonstrating the propulsion of a neutrally-buoyant swimmer that consists of a pair of spheres attached by a spring, immersed in a vibrating fluid. The vibration of the fluid induces relative motion of the spheres which, for sufficiently large amplitudes, can lead to motion of the center of mass of the two spheres. We find that the swimming speed obtained from both experiment and simulation agree and collapse onto a single curve if plotted as a function of the streaming Reynolds number, suggesting that the propulsion is related to streaming flows. There …
An oscillating spanwise pressure gradient is imposed numerically to control the flow separation and reduce the drag of a turbulent flow in a channel with square bars. The transverse flow produces a maximum drag reduction of 25\%, due to lower pressure and skin-friction drag forces. The pressure drag reduction reaches a maximum of 22\% and is due to a decrease of the positive high pressure in front of the bars and an increase of the low negative pressure behind the bars. The skin-friction drag reduction is caused by a lower wall-shear stress along the cavity between the bars where the flow is f…
This study presents a numerical investigation of how fluid viscoelasticity influences the flow dynamics past a transversely forced oscillating cylinder in the laminar vortex shedding regime at a fixed Reynolds number of 100. In particular, we examine how fluid viscoelasticity influences the boundary between the lock-in and no lock-in zones and the associated wake topology compared to that seen in a simple Newtonian fluid. All in all, we find that the fluid viscoelasticity facilitates the synchronization of the vortex street with the cylinder motion at lower oscillation frequencies than that re…
Characterizing the dynamics of a cantilever in channel flow is relevant to applications ranging from snoring to energy harvesting. Aeroelastic flutter induces large oscillating amplitudes and sharp changes with frequency that impact the operation of these systems. The fluid-structure mechanisms that drive flutter can vary as the system parameters change, with the stability boundary becoming especially sensitive to the channel height and Reynolds number, especially when either or both are small. In this paper, we develop a coupled fluid-structure model for viscous, two-dimensional channel flow …
We consider incompressible flows between two transversely vibrating solid walls and construct an asymptotic expansion of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the limit when both the amplitude of vibrations and the thickness of the Stokes layer are small and have the same order of magnitude. Our asymptotic expansion is valid up to the flow boundary. In particular, we derive equations and boundary conditions, for the averaged flow. In the leading order, the averaged flow is described by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations with an additional term which contains the leading-order Stokes …
A fundamental problem in the field of turbulent skin-friction drag reduction is to determine the performance of the available control techniques at high values of the Reynolds number $Re$. We consider active, predetermined strategies based on spanwise forcing (oscillating wall and streamwise-traveling waves applied to a plane channel flow), and explore via Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) up to $Re_τ=2100$ the rate at which their performance deteriorates as $Re$ is increased. To be able to carry out a comprehensive parameter study, we limit the computational cost of the simulations by adjust…
The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are widely used in turbulence applications. They require accurately modeling the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor, for which traditional Reynolds stress closure models only yield reliable results in some flow configurations. In the last few years, there has been a surge of work aiming at using data-driven approaches to tackle this problem. The majority of previous work has focused on the development of fully-connected networks for modeling the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor. In this paper, we expand upon recent work for turbulent chann…
The flow around a symmetric aerofoil (NACA 0012) with an array of flexible flaplets attached to the trailing edge has been investigated at Reynolds numbers of 100,000 - 150,000 by using High-Speed Time-Resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (HS TR-PIV) and motion tracking of the flaplets' tips. Particular attention has been made on the upstream effect on the boundary layer evolution along the suction side of the wing, at angles of attack of 0$^\text{o}$ and 10$^\text{o}$. For the plain aerofoil, without flaplets, the boundary layer on the second half of the aerofoil shows the formation of rollers…
Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are presently one of the most popular models for simulating turbulence. Performing RANS simulation requires additional modeling for the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor, but traditional Reynolds stress closure models lead to only partially reliable predictions. Recently, data-driven turbulence models for the Reynolds anisotropy tensor involving novel machine learning techniques have garnered considerable attention and have been rapidly developed. Focusing on modeling the Reynolds stress closure for the specific case of turbulent channel flow, …
We present results from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of oscillatory pipe flow at several dimensionless frequencies Wo = {6.5, 13, 26} and one fixed shear Reynolds number Re_τ = 1440. Starting from a fully-developed turbulent velocity field at that Re_τ, the oscillatory flow either relaminarises or reaches a conditionally turbulent or strongly asymmetric state depending on Wo. The numerical method is validated by demonstrating excellent agreement of our DNS results with experimental data and analytical predictions from literature for the limiting cases of non-oscillating but turbulent and…
This study seeks to characterise the breakdown of the steady 2D solution in the flow around a 180-degree sharp bend to infinitesimal 3D disturbances using a linear stability analysis. The stability analysis predicts that 3D transition is via a synchronous instability of the steady flows. A highly accurate global linear stability analysis of the flow was conducted with Reynolds number $Re<1150$ and bend opening ratio (ratio of bend width to inlet height) $0.2\leqβ\leq5$. This range of $Re$ and $β$ captures both steady-state 2D flow solutions as well as the inception of unsteady 2D flow. For $0.…
This study presents a deep learning-based framework to reconstruct high-resolution turbulent velocity fields from extremely low-resolution data at various Reynolds numbers using the concept of generative adversarial networks (GANs). A multiscale enhanced super-resolution generative adversarial network (MS-ESRGAN) is applied as a model to reconstruct the high-resolution velocity fields, and direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of turbulent channel flow with large longitudinal ribs at various Reynolds numbers are used to evaluate the performance of the model. The model is found to have the cap…
The dispersion and mixing of passive particles in a turbulent channel flow is investigated by means of a network-based representation of their motion. We employ direct numerical simulations at five different Reynolds numbers, from $\mathrm{Re}_τ$ = 180 up to $\mathrm{Re}_τ$ = 950, and obtain sets of particle trajectories via numerical integration. By dividing the channel domain into wall-normal levels, the motion of particles across these levels is used to build a time-varying complex network, which is able to capture the transient phase of the wall-normal mixing process and its dependence on …
Fluid dynamics induced by periodically forced flow around a cylinder is analyzed computationally for the case when the forcing frequency is much lower than the von K{á}rm{á}n vortex shedding frequency corresponding to the constant flow velocity condition. By using the Koopman Mode Decomposition approach, we find a new normal form equation that extends the classical Hopf bifurcation normal form by a time-dependent term for Reynolds numbers close to the Hopf bifurcation value. The normal form describes the dynamics of an observable and features a forcing (control) term that multiplies the state,…
Recent experiments showed that standing acoustic waves could be exploited to induce self-propulsion of rigid metallic particles in the direction perpendicular to the acoustic wave. We propose in this paper a physical mechanism for these observations based on the interplay between inertial forces in the fluid and the geometrical asymmetry of the particle shape. We consider an axisymmetric rigid near-sphere oscillating in a quiescent fluid along a direction perpendicular to its symmetry axis. The kinematics of oscillations can be either prescribed or can result dynamically from the presence of a…
Many microorganisms swim through gels, materials with nonzero zero-frequency elastic shear modulus, such as mucus. Biological gels are typically heterogeneous, containing both a structural scaffold (network) and a fluid solvent. We analyze the swimming of an infinite sheet undergoing transverse traveling wave deformations in the "two-fluid" model of a gel, which treats the network and solvent as two coupled elastic and viscous continuum phases. We show that geometric nonlinearities must be incorporated to obtain physically meaningful results. We identify a transition between regimes where the …
There exists continuous demand of improved turbulence models for the closure of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations. Machine Learning (ML) offers effective tools for establishing advanced empirical Reynolds stress closures on the basis of high fidelity simulation data. This paper presents a turbulence model based on the Deep Neural Network(DNN) which takes into account the non-linear relationship between the Reynolds stress anisotropy tensor and the local mean velocity gradient as well as the near-wall effect. The construction and the tuning of the DNN-turbulence model are detai…
We investigate the influence of unsteady partial cavitation on the fluid-structure interaction of a freely vibrating hydrofoil section at high Reynolds numbers. We consider an elastically-mounted NACA66 hydrofoil section that is free to vibrate in the transverse flow direction. Cavitating flow dynamics coupled with the transverse vibration are studied at low angles of attack. For the numerical study, we employ a recently developed unified variational fluid-structure interaction framework based on homogeneous mixture-based cavitation with hybrid URANS-LES turbulence modeling. We first validate …
In heat transfer augmenting methods such as radial fins, the heat transfer enhancement commonly leads to the drag force increment. In the present paper, slots are inserted over the fins to simultaneously reduce the drag coefficient. Turbulent convection heat transfer around a cylinder, as well as oscillating bundle of tubes including the slotted radial fins have been investigated. The governing equations are solved in two-dimension utilizing OpenFOAM software based on k-ω SST closure model. The cases with various slot location, slot width, the number of the slots, the fin height, and oscillati…
Analytical solutions in fluid dynamics can be used to elucidate the physics of complex flows and to serve as test cases for numerical models. In this work, we present the analytical solution for the acoustic boundary layer that develops around a rigid sphere executing small amplitude harmonic rectilinear motion in a compressible fluid. The mathematical framework that describes the primary flow is identical to that of wave propagation in linearly elastic solids, the difference being the appearance of complex instead of real valued wave numbers. The solution reverts to well-known classical solut…
This paper focuses on the active flow control of a computational fluid dynamics simulation over a range of Reynolds numbers using deep reinforcement learning (DRL). More precisely, the proximal policy optimization (PPO) method is used to control the mass flow rate of four synthetic jets symmetrically located on the upper and lower sides of a cylinder immersed in a two-dimensional flow domain. The learning environment supports four flow configurations with Reynolds numbers 100, 200, 300 and 400, respectively. A new smoothing interpolation function is proposed to help the PPO algorithm to learn …
Detailed flow dissection using Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is carried out to investigate the dynamics of the flow-field around a NACA-0012 aerofoil at a Reynolds number of $5\times 10^4$, Mach number of $0.4$, and at various angles of attack around the onset of stall. Three distinct dominant flow modes are identified by the DMD and the POD: 1) a globally oscillating flow mode at a low-frequency (LFO mode 1); 2) a locally oscillating flow mode on the suction surface of the aerofoil at a low-frequency (LFO mode 2); and 3) a locally oscillating flow …
The pressure strain correlation plays a critical role in the Reynolds stress transport modelling. Accurate modelling of the pressure strain correlation leads to proper prediction of turbulence stresses and subsequently the other terms of engineering interest. However, classical pressure strain correlation models are often unreliable for complex turbulent flows. Machine learning based models have shown promise in turbulence modeling but their application has been largely restricted to eddy viscosity based models. In this article, we outline a rationale for the preferential application of machin…
This research has found a novel computational efficient method of modelling flow at low Reynolds number through fracture networks. The numerical analysis was performed by connecting Hele-Shaw cells to investigate the effect of the intersection to the pressure field and hydraulic resistance for given inlet and outlet pressure values. In this analysis, the impact of intersecting length, intersecting angle and fracture aperture on the fluid flow was studied. For this purpose, two models with different topologies were established. The Hele-Shaw simulation results for hydraulic resistance, pressure…
We theoretically and experimentally investigate low-Reynolds-number propulsion of geometrically achiral planar objects that possess a dipole moment and that are driven by a rotating magnetic field. Symmetry considerations (involving parity, $\widehat{P}$, and charge conjugation, $\widehat{C}$) establish correspondence between propulsive states depending on orientation of the dipolar moment. Although basic symmetry arguments do not forbid individual symmetric objects to efficiently propel due to spontaneous symmetry breaking, they suggest that the average ensemble velocity vanishes. Some additi…

The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations require accurate modeling of the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor. Traditional closure models, while sophisticated, often only apply to restricted flow configurations. Researchers have started using machine learning approaches to tackle this problem by developing more general closure models informed by data. In this work we build upon recent convolutional neural network architectures used for turbulence modeling and propose a multi-task learning-based fully convolutional neural network that is able to accurately predict the normalized anis…
The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach remains a backbone for turbulence modeling due to its high cost-effectiveness. Its accuracy is largely based on a reliable Reynolds stress anisotropy tensor closure model. There has been an amount of work aiming at improving traditional closure models, while they are still not satisfactory to some complex flow configurations. In recent years, advances in computing power have opened up a new way to address this problem: the machine-learning-assisted turbulence modeling. In this paper, we employ neural networks to fully predict the Reynolds str…
