This paper develops a new storage-optimal algorithm that provably solves generic semidefinite programs (SDPs) in standard form. This method is particularly effective for weakly constrained SDPs. The key idea is to formulate an approximate complementarity principle: Given an approximate solution to the dual SDP, the primal SDP has an approximate solution whose range is contained in the eigenspace with small eigenvalues of the dual slack matrix. For weakly constrained SDPs, this eigenspace has very low dimension, so this observation significantly reduces the search space for the primal solution.
This result suggests an algorithmic strategy that can be implemented with minimal storage:
(1) Solve the dual SDP approximately;
(2) compress the primal SDP to the eigenspace with small eigenvalues of the dual slack matrix;
(3) solve the compressed primal SDP.
The paper also provides numerical experiments showing that this approach is successful for a range of interesting large-scale SDPs.
The robust truss topology optimization against the uncertain static external load can be formulated as mixed-integer semidefinite programming. Although a global optimal solution can be computed with a branch-and-bound method, it is very time-consuming. This paper presents an alternative formulation, semidefinite programming with complementarity constraints, and proposes an efficient heuristic. The proposed method is based upon the convex-concave procedure for DC (difference-of-convex) programming. It is shown that the method can often find a practically reasonable truss design within the compu…

Second-order necessary optimality conditions for nonlinear conic programming problems that depend on a single Lagrange multiplier are usually built under nondegeneracy and strict complementarity. In this paper we establish a condition of such type for two classes of nonlinear conic problems, namely semidefinite and second-order cone programming, assuming Robinson's constraint qualification and a weak constant rank-type property which are, together, strictly weaker than nondegeneracy. Our approach is done via a penalty-based strategy, which is aimed at providing strong global convergence result…
The MaxCut SDP is one of the most well-known semidefinite programs, and it has many favorable properties. One of its nicest geometric/duality properties is the fact that the vertices of its feasible region correspond exactly to the cuts of a graph, as proved by Laurent and Poljak in 1995. Recall that a boundary point $x$ of a convex set $C$ is called a vertex of $C$ if the normal cone of $C$ at $x$ is full-dimensional. We study how often strict complementarity holds or fails for the MaxCut SDP when a vertex of the feasible region is optimal, i.e., when the SDP relaxation is tight. While strict…
To avoid simultaneous charging and discharging of storages, complementarity constraints are introduced to storage-concerned economic dispatch (ED), which makes the problem non-convex. This letter concerns the conditions under which the convex relaxation of storage-concerned ED with complementarity constraints is exact. Two new sufficient conditions are proposed, proved and verified to significantly reduce the conservatism of recent results [3], [4].
In this paper, we provide an elementary, geometric, and unified framework to analyze conic programs that we call the strict complementarity approach. This framework allows us to establish error bounds and quantify the sensitivity of the solution. The framework uses three classical ideas from convex geometry and linear algebra: linear regularity of convex sets, facial reduction, and orthogonal decomposition. We show how to use this framework to derive error bounds for linear programming (LP), second order cone programming (SOCP), and semidefinite programming (SDP).
In 2020, Yamakawa and Okuno proposed a stabilized sequential quadratic semidefinite programming (SQSDP) method for solving, in particular, degenerate nonlinear semidefinite optimization problems. The algorithm is shown to converge globally without a constraint qualification, and it has some nice properties, including the feasible subproblems, and their possible inexact computations. In particular, the convergence was established for approximate-Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (AKKT) and trace-AKKT conditions, which are two sequential optimality conditions for the nonlinear conic contexts. However, recently…
In this paper, we show that the bundle method can be applied to solve semidefinite programming problems with a low rank solution without ever constructing a full matrix. To accomplish this, we use recent results from randomly sketching matrix optimization problems and from the analysis of bundle methods. Under strong duality and strict complementarity of SDP, our algorithm produces primal and the dual sequences converging in feasibility at a rate of $\tilde{O}(1/ε)$ and in optimality at a rate of $\tilde{O}(1/ε^2)$. Moreover, our algorithm outputs a low rank representation of its approximate s…
In this paper, we introduce a new kernel function which differs from previous functions, and play an important role for generating a new design of primal-dual interior point algorithms for semidefinite linear complementarity problem. Its properties, allow us a great simplicity for the analysis of interior-point method, therefore the complexity of large-update primal-dual interior point is the best so far. Numerical tests have shown that the use of this function gave a big improvement in the results concerning the time and the number of iterations. so is well promising and perform well enough i…
The problem of minimizing the rank of a symmetric positive semidefinite matrix subject to constraints can be cast equivalently as a semidefinite program with complementarity constraints (SDCMPCC). The formulation requires two positive semidefinite matrices to be complementary. This is a continuous and nonconvex reformulation of the rank minimization problem. We investigate calmness of locally optimal solutions to the SDCMPCC formulation and hence show that any locally optimal solution is a KKT point. We develop a penalty formulation of the problem. We present calmness results for locally optim…
A One-Factorization Predictor-Corrector Long-Step Arc-Search Method and a Curvature-Amplified Variant for Semidefinite Programming with a Homogeneous Self-Dual Embedding
Low rank matrix recovery problems appear widely in statistics, combinatorics, and imaging. One celebrated method for solving these problems is to formulate and solve a semidefinite program (SDP). It is often known that the exact solution to the SDP with perfect data recovers the solution to the original low rank matrix recovery problem. It is more challenging to show that an approximate solution to the SDP formulated with noisy problem data acceptably solves the original problem; arguments are usually ad hoc for each problem setting, and can be complex. In this note, we identify a set of condi…
Semidefinite programming (SDP) is a powerful framework from convex optimization that has striking potential for data science applications. This paper develops a provably correct randomized algorithm for solving large, weakly constrained SDP problems by economizing on the storage and arithmetic costs. Numerical evidence shows that the method is effective for a range of applications, including relaxations of MaxCut, abstract phase retrieval, and quadratic assignment. Running on a laptop equivalent, the algorithm can handle SDP instances where the matrix variable has over $10^{14}$ entries.

The integration of intermittent and stochastic renewable energy resources requires increased flexibility in the operation of the electric grid. Storage, broadly speaking, provides the flexibility of shifting energy over time; network, on the other hand, provides the flexibility of shifting energy over geographical locations. The optimal control of storage networks in stochastic environments is an important open problem. The key challenge is that, even in small networks, the corresponding constrained stochastic control problems on continuous spaces suffer from curses of dimensionality, and are …

The spectral bundle method proposed by Helmberg and Rendl is well established for solving large-scale semidefinite programs (SDP) thanks to its low per iteration computational complexity and strong practical performance. In this paper, we revisit this classic method showing it achieves sublinear convergence rates in terms of both primal and dual SDPs under merely strong duality, complementing previous guarantees on primal-dual convergence. Moreover, we show the method speeds up to linear convergence if (1) structurally, the SDP admits strict complementarity, and (2) algorithmically, the bundle…
We show how to sketch semidefinite programs (SDPs) using positive maps in order to reduce their dimension. More precisely, we use Johnson\hyp{}Lindenstrauss transforms to produce a smaller SDP whose solution preserves feasibility or approximates the value of the original problem with high probability. These techniques allow to improve both complexity and storage space requirements. They apply to problems in which the Schatten 1-norm of the matrices specifying the SDP and also of a solution to the problem is constant in the problem size. Furthermore, we provide some results which clarify the li…
The optimal selection, sizing, and location of small-scale technologies within a grid-connected distributed energy system (DES) can contribute to reducing carbon emissions, consumer costs, and network imbalances. This is the first study to present an optimisation framework for obtaining discrete technology sizing and selection for grid-connected DES design, while simultaneously considering multiphase optimal power flow (MOPF) constraints to accurately represent unbalanced low-voltage distribution networks. An algorithm is developed to solve the resulting Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MI…
